You have 2 hours to complete this quest, and any items that you test during the quest will expire in 2 hours as well. You can kill any of the basilisks/hyenas/scorpids in the area, and each kill will give you an untested item, which you have to test. Each item won't, however, give you an "acceptable result", and the piece will be destroyed. The quest is kinda a pain, but the exp and rep are nice.

ok for those of us who have failed this quets becuase they spent to much time getting ganked by other players that have nothing better to do with there time.. how do i got about getting another field testing kit?? cuz when i abandoned the timed quest to restart it it destroyed my testing kit and now when i start the quest over i don't thave the means to test the sample any more

I finished this quest in 38 minutes as a 51 Hunter. I hunted mobs around Gadgetzan since they were 42-45 and quickly killed.

I also got 3 greens and a blue from these mobs.

Completed this in 53 minutes on a lvl 44 feral Druid. The trick I found was to concentrate on each creature needed at a time and collect 2-3 time as many Untested Samples as needed then test them all at once.

Very annoying quest. Most of the "accepatble" parts took between 3 and 5 tries. After 1 hour and 21 minutes I was done. If I wasn't grinding rep for UC I would not have done this quest but that is just me.

Freakin' lame. I have the quest, and in my quest log I read:

Time Remaining: 1 Hr 44 Mins
Acceptable Basilisk Sample: 0/8
Acceptable Hyena Sample: 0/8
Acceptable Scorpid Sample: 0/8
Field Testing Kit: 1/1 (Complete)

In other words, I *have* time left, and I *have* the Field Testing Kit. However, when I right-click an untested sample, it says "Requires Field Testing Kit". WTF?

I even checked the bank to make sure it wasn't in there (even though I knew it couldn't be, since I hadn't visited the bank since getting the quest). Nothing. It's just broken.

Just done on my lvl60 (as a way of getting UC rep) here's some numbers as they haven't been given above:

Hyena untested samples: 38 about 21% chance
Basilisk untested samples: 43 about 18% chance
Scorpid untested samples: 52 about 15% chance

If i had been the appropriate level i can imagine the timer could have run out by sheer luck :( Really wish i hadn't started it;as once you do you cannot stop - just watch that quest timer counting how long this one quest has taken

I wanted to abandon the quest because i had all the aceptable samples, and i just wanted to take the quests again and complete it now when i had the samples, but when i abandoned it destroyed all my "acceptable" samples!!!

What the fuck man? 3 hours of work?? thanks for shit Blizzard! you just lost another customer!

Jesus christ, calm down... Before you abandon a quest, it asks you, "Are you sure you want to abandon "Quest Name"? It will destroy all of your "Quest Items" if you do so.

For this quest you require the Field Testing Kit obtained by a previous quest in UnderCity

If you abandon this quest you will need to accept it again and collect 10 water samples to get another power source. You may also need to go to undercity and purchase another field testing kit if you have already picked up and tested samples.

The mobs mainly populate the top half of Tanaris.

With 2.3's boost to quest xp boost, this is seems to be a 30-60 minute grind that is not really needed. Don't do this if you want to maintain your xp / hr.

Even considering the followup 12k quest xp for probably an hours worth of effort... you can do better.

With my level 50 warlock I just ran around and DOT'd every monster I saw and then picked up the item when I ran back that way. I was able to have the quest handed in within 58:30 minutes into the ordeal and I will still have to say it still wasn't really worth my time.

I had 15 of the 24 necessary samples at 17 minutes into the quest (5 of each).

As a level 49 shadow priest taking minimal mana breaks, I was able to finish this quest in 34 minutes.

I found this quest well worth the effort.

Best if done on off peak hours and avoid the heavy traffic areas like the one between Gagdetzan and the instance or Gagdetzan and Steamwheel Port.

You get 12k xp, good gloves for a caster of the lvl, especially a loc, bout 4-6 bars of xp (mid 40s), and if your a skinner the scorpions give you scorpid scale rather frequently.

Bring a skinner. You'll be killing a lot of skinnables, it'd be a shame if you let it go to waste. I'd recommend bringing one even if you are a skinner, as you'll spend less time skinning and more time killing, as well as the added inventory space from not hauling all this leather around with you.

It's also a good idea to relax, 2 hours is plenty of time for this, unless you've got very, very, very bad luck.

DO NOT DO THIS QUEST this quest was so annoying i wanted to stop but after getting half way through i asnt about to quit all that time i spent. the rate for me was about 1/10 were good so about 10% i killed over 100 altogether and got 4 out of 8 of each, grinded about 5 bars and spent 1 1/2 hours to finish it. if u really have ohting better to do, like to grind than this is for you, i suggest not to do it. grrrrr i will never touch that again on anyone able to do it, its my promise!

As a lvl 52 Retribution paladin, this quest took me about 52 minutes with no competition for the mobs, not because it was hard, but because the acceptable sample proc rate is terrible.

I don't know if it's actually true, but it seemed that the slightly higher level mobs had a slightly higher chance to have acceptable samples. I did most of my hunting around the Abyssal Sands and it felt like I got the needed samples more often than from the mobs right around Gadgetzan.

5750 xp - not at all worth the time I put in.

You get a lot more than 5750. There's another turn-in quest for more XP that you get right after the initial turn-in.

I did this as a lvl 51 fire mage, and it took me about 30 minutes. Wasn't as worth it for me, but if I had been around 45, which I think is the level the quest is designed for, it would have been much more worth it. I got pretty decent XP for the kills, and as a 40-something, the grinding would have been excellent. So I recommend doing this as a mid-high 40s. Good luck!

Started this quest as a 43 warrior with a bar to go before leveling. 1 hour and 35 minutes later I had finally got my last acceptable sample. By this time I was 5 bars into 44 and very, very tired of nonstop smashing. With the drop rate I had, this is the

worst. quest. evar. And I've done most of them.

Advice on how to do this with most efficiency? One word: Don't.

I did it as a level 51 druid (don't ask why), and god, it took me 45 frickin' minutes. I killed the mobs in no time, but that made it even more annoying since I had to kill that many more mobs. In lower levels I don't know if I could have done it on time.

From my point of view there are two types of annoying quests. There are those that are simply annoying, and those that just make you depressed. This was one of those.

As lvl40-42 undead shadowpriest (yes, I dinged twice in that time >_<) , took me 111min 30sec.

Admittedly, I grew so bored with killing the same mobs over and over, halfway I took a break for 10min or so. boy what a mistake! the last basilisk took me about 30mins, both because suddenly the basilisks were very scarce, and the ones that I did find didn't get me an acceptable sample! the last 10 minutes were really starting to get me stressed!

I recommend NOT doing this quest, but if you really want to, be sure you can play and stay focused for 2 hours!

Ugh... Just finished this on my 43 Lock... Be prepared in advance to spend 30-45 minutes at the least doing this. The beasts you have to kill for the sample have ~100% chance of dropping an untested sample. The hard part is getting lucky with the acceptable samples, so expect to be killing quite a few mobs. On the plus side, even if the quest reward items are useless to you, the 1g30s reward is pretty decent for this level of quest.

Did this as a level 52 Orc Shaman and finished it in about 50 minutes. The quest can be extremely frustrating depending on if you're lucky or not. I killed about 120 mobs with an extremely low success rate on the samples. Fortunately, I had skinning so it wasn't a total loss!

Worth it? Probably not.

Solo'd as lvl 44 shaman, but it was terrible quest. I think the droprate was about 25-30% so i must kill about 100 mobs before i've done it. I spent over an hour travelling near gadgetzan and killing them.

granted, this isn't the most fun quest in the log. ... but you do get quite a bit of xp on the forced grind for these samples. it's just as boring grinding Mag'har rep or what ever it is you want re: faction tho at least you get something cool out of that! the rewards for this are poor. the xp, meh. 5750 xp, 1g 30s, +350 UC rep. if i rolled another toon, i'd skip this one. if you're the kind of ocd that needs to finish every quest in a line, bring coffee. ... or beer.

Bugged for me as well, as of the 24th. Didn't receive the testing kit. My friend did receive it however, after I helped him get the water pouches to turn in, about 20 minutes after I had turned in the quest. *shrug*

As others have said, it's not a bug if you don't get the testing kit from the goblin, since you get it from the previous part of the chain in Undercity. And need to get it from there again if you lose it.

That said, I'd suggest not wasting your time with this quest unless you are going for Loremaster, as the conversion ratios from untested to acceptable samples is ridiculous.

Just completed in less that 60 mins on a lvl 40 disc priestie (never bothered with this quest on previous toons tbh)......
However wish I had, would strongly suggest doing this quest on rested, it's a TRUE grinding quest, can be heart breaking at times with 3/4 samples not qualifying however stick with it, rested bonus ~ 40 ish, should be about 580xp a mob...... Well worth doing imho!

This quest isn't very hard. I soloed this at level 48 as a demonology warlock the quest was still yellow to me so I did it. The hard part about this quest is that the chance of getting an acceptable sample is really low. Also i suggest that warlocks level 45 and above with VW should use it to tank while you DoT them down because players should be able to take on 2-3 of their own level at once. By doing this you can get more untested samples at a time. Also, there are quite a bit of basilisks and hyenas in the north of the purple part of Tanaris. I think the coords are 55, 55 somewhere around there.

NEVER EVER EVER do this quest! This seriously is the one of the stupidest quests in the whole freaking game! Just an example of how much this quest sucks, I killed at least twenty different creatures and got a sample off of each and maybe, MAYBE got two, I repeat TWO good samples off of them! And you need 24 total! I started doing it with an hour and a half left of my testing kit and I never finished it! I failed before I could! DO NOT waste your time with this quest! Because this quest is one of the biggest wastes of time in the whole freaking game!

This quest is totally luck of the draw since at level 45 i tried it and couldn't finish it the first time. I believe I had a TOTAL of 5 good samples. The second attempt was when I was 50 and in the area completeing some other quest and thought wtf. This time went a bit better. I didnt get a good sample until i hit my 30th and finally every other one tested was good.

The drop rate is so terrible on this quest it made me superstitious. I started to think if i tested less than 6 samples in a row there was no chance it would give me a acceptable sample. Sadly, even this ritual proved to be unprofitable. While in the first half hour i collected over half the total samples. In the next half I was able to gather everything except six Basallisc samples. I had to take this quest down to the wire in order to finish in time. I finished with only 10 minutes remaining, and i was a lvl 48 Shaman, so i never paused to even drink water. Just straight killing from guy to guy. This quest sucks. No other words for it. I do not recommend, i feel like i got lucky to even complete it and could easily see others getting slightly less lucky and not even being able to complete it. NOT WORTH IT

this quest bites.. I really don't like it.. I had to have killed like 100+ of them mobs and only ended up with 6scorpid 1 hyena and 4 basilisk.. this quest is not for people with little patience.. this will only annoy the hell out of you... my advice avoid it.. unimportant unless your trying to get an achievement...

Nothing like doing ths quest when the realm is like one hour to shutdown for maintenance, then killing everything like crazy and getting the last sample with two minutes left, then handing it and having only one minute left... talk about getting anxious.

Duo'ed this quest with a prot pally/disc priest team that was in the mid 40s. Took about an hour to complete in this configuration. After reading other posts expect to take about this amount of time regardless of level or group make up. The time killer here is the low rate of getting acceptable samples. We did end up having to change the loot to free for all as once we started getting completes we were still able to pick up samples that the other needed and unfortunately they are soulbound. Might be a consideration if your thinking of pugging.

We each picked up about 2/3 a level from killing and that was unrested. This is definitely a quest where you want to have at least half a level of rested experience. We were both of the opinion after it was all said and done that we would have been better skipping this quest and moving even moving on to a different zone as spending an hour just killing things for one quest turns less experience than killing things for an hour to complete five to ten quests does. The only saving grace to this is the next quest does give 7200 exp just for a quick trip to Undercity that most will do anyways within the next couple levels.

Did it today, 25th Nov 09, and the drop rate ain't that much bad. Got the hyena 8/20, the scorpids 8/25 and the basilisks 8/18, so not much bad. Done in 34 minutes which includes going UC to buy Kit, portal Blasted Lands, fly Shatt, portal TB and then taxi Gadgetzan.

They apparently have changed this quest in patch 3.3 to only need 3 samples total, one from each kind. All I had to do was kill one scorpid, one basilisk, and one hyena and I was done!

Looks like this quest has been simplified a lot. The text remains the same, however, I only needed to collect 1 of each untested sample. The scorpid and hyena samples cannot even be tested anymore, though the basilisk sample still can (I used it once, and it was destroyed). Seems a bit buggy, but definitely not as stupidly hard as before. Just kill one of each mob, grab the samples, and roll back to Gadgetzan to get them sealed up.

I just did this quest, and only needed to collect one untested sample of each. The quest text claims I needed eight of each, but the objectives are ticked as soon as you collect the first. There is no need to test if the samples are acceptable anymore - it seems they've gotten rid of the horrible conversion ratio that made this quest such a pain.

That said, I was still able to check if the untested basilisk sample was acceptable. It got converted to an acceptable sample, which would be nice, if it wasn't for the fact that the quest no longer requires you to test them.

All in all, it seems like Blizzard intended to patch up this quest to make it a lot less frustrating, but ended up introducing a couple of quirks as well.

I remember this quest being a pain in the @$$. This time around, it was so easy I thought I must have been mistaken.

They must have changed the quest, because now you don't even have to test the samples. Collect one untested sample from each of the animals (was 100% drop rate for me), and then turn in.

Done.

Finished the quest in less than 2 minutes.

The quest text hasn't been updated but the quest has been.
Now you only need to kill 1 scorpid, 1 hyena and 1 basilisk, 100% drop and no need for 8 of each anymore. Did it in under 2 minutes, also counts towards Loremaster of Kalimdor.

This quest now requires ONE of each of the UNTESTED samples, which makes this quest retarded easy. Activate the kit, kill a scorpid, basilisk, and hyena, and turn the quest in. Done in ten seconds.

As of today this quest is fairly easy.

You only need one untested Sample of each kind and the untested samples still seem to have a 100% droprate. It took me 3 minutes of running around outside of Gadgetzan to find each kind of mob. 3 kill, 3 drops and done.

Note: The quest description is a bit confusing and acutally wrong you really need only one each.

Just did this quest today on an alt, and evidently it has changed. While the quest text still says to collect samples for 8 of each mob, the requirements showed you only needed one for each. They dropped from the first mobs I killed, although I don't know if it will always be 100% drop rate. You don't need to test them anymore either, as I remember doing a long time ago. Also, there was no timer that I saw. The follow-up quest is the same. Looks like Blizz gave in once again to those who qq enough.....kind of disappointing.

This quest appears to have been ninja "adjusted" as I had a 100% drop rate from each animal, and the NPC simply advanced the quest to the final turnin when I spoke to him.

The quest text is confusing, as it said 8 of each instead of the currently needed 1 of each. So it appears to have been a dirty fix to the quest mechanics without actually changing the text.

Either that, or I am incredibly lucky.

As of 3.3 the quest has been updated. You are supplied the Field Testing Kit instead of buying it from Undercity (You still pick up the quest in UC obviously). When you get to Tanaris you need to bring 5 Wastwandering Pouches to the goblin for the power source.

Only 1 sample of each and no failure. As of 3.3 the quest text was not updated, but it only requires one of each sample to bring back to the engineer though it still states eight are required.

I just did this quest with my druid, fully expecting it to be the pain it used to be. Instead of the 8 each listed in the quest text, the requirements were only one each. Which dropped for me on the first mob of each creature. Expecting it to be some error, I cashed in and indeed only needed one. So much for the horrible two hour grind this used to be, it took me all of 8 minutes, and most of that was running back to town.

Quest must have been changed at some point in the past year, since I just did this quest with no problems.

Not only was there no time constraint to deal with, but also got all three samples immediately from the three indicated mobs.

Tanaris Field Sampling

This quest was marked obsolete by Blizzard and cannot be obtained or completed.

Acquire untested samples for 8 basilisks, 8 hyenas, and 8 scorpions. Bring the testing kit back to Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle in Gadgetzan before the power source runs out.
