On the PTR: Painfully low droprate from the normal mobs. The level 61 elite mobs (Soulstarved Shadowers) seem to have a better drop rate. I had to use multiple Repaired Riftkey to complete, killing as often as possible. I also got 4 from a Riftbound Cache. Hopefully they buff this when it's live, because even with being the only one there, I was constantly looking for mobs.

1st key - 9/25 Repositories
2nd key - 24/25
3rd - 25/25

I did this quest today when 9.1.5 patch released. Took me one key it might take you a second but drop rate is fine now. Lots of people killing everything in the rifts. Killing the BIG green guys will need a few people and one dropped 6 quest items. The lesser elites that whrilwind drop one or two. The little adds drop 1 now and then. I did the quest as a geared hunter using only ONE riftkey but it might take you TWO but the quest isn't too bad as it sounds on the PTR.

Go into the rift and kill mobs AND the FOUR chests to loot in the rift ALSO drop 4 or so quest items.

As a get-dropped-items-from-killed-mobs quest, this is a wretched, frustrating experience.

That said, 4 Korthian Repositorys drop from each of the four Riftbound Caches, as Zieda points out elsewhere on this page, so I think my strategy is gonna be to loot the caches six or seven times over the week (since it's a weekly quest) and to ignore the mobs as much as possible.

Update: I've found an additional way to ease the pain of this quest: The three mobs that you can pull out of the Rift— Deadsoul Hatcher, Screaming Shade, and Silent Soulstalker— each consistently drop 3 Korthian Repositorys when they're yoinked into regular Korthia and killed while you're on this quest.

Easy to complete and not at all hard. Make a group if you cant kill the elites on your own and you should be fine.

Riftbound Caches = 4 each
Famished Darkness = 5 -6 each
Soulstaved Shadowers = 1 each

Cant confirm about the rares as I did not kill them.

This quest is weekly. If you do rift chests 2 or 3 days you will be done. No need to grind it all in 1 day.

Blizzard: So 9.1.5 reflects a shift toward more alt accessibility, more catchup, more sensitivity and respect for players’ time, trying to look at what sorts of activities are going to be interesting once or twice, but maybe less interesting when you have to do them more than that. Let’s not make you do them more than that.

Also Blizzard: Also have a quest on a 15-minute timer where you get knocked out of the zone and need to buy your way in through another item purchaseable with 10% of the currency that you're hoping to get for quest completion if you die or run out of time where you need 25 geegaws that are a really low drop off the mobs. And you can do it weekly!

"For this quest, we'll send you into a different dimension, which is really the same place you're already at, just with a gray filter. There you will have to grind for an abstract item so generic we couldn't even give it a proper name, which only drops from a few mobs, and even those have a drop rate under 25%. For your convenience, the mobs are so far apart from each other that you can't even pull a group, or some of them will reset. So you'll have to kill over 100 of these HP sponges one by one, or at most in pairs (actually, you'll have to kill a lot more, because each of the mobs that can drop it is surrounded by mobs that can't). Oh, but after a few minutes we'll teleport you back to the normal 'dimension', and you'll have to go buy a new 'key' (which requires grinding yet another random currency) and walk all the way back to the 'door' to continue this exciting and fulfilling activity. Have fun!"

Dull, slow, mind-numbing, vexing. This quest is a great summary for Shadowlands as a whole. It's like you're paying Blizzard for the privilege of being trolled.

I guess they were too busy changing the name of a pink rocket from "love" to "heartbreak" (because that's such a positive change, eh?) to actually playtest their own "quests"...

Note that the item also drops from the 3 rares that are pulled out of the rift (I got 3 from the Deadsoul Hatcher, for example) . If you really can't stand/survive the rift, watch for these spawning, kill each day and just enter and leave a rift to meet the criteria.

I got 22 in one 15 minute "rift key". I'm not sure what's with the complaining. my question is, can i go back in somehow today, or do I have to wait for tomorrow?

Y'all sound like a bunch of salty Gallywix clones...

Took less than 10 minutes, not even knowing what mobs dropped the Repositories, just by doing the same circuit of the 4 rift chests I have normally done. I was able to complete the entire bare from 0-100 for Shaping Fate just doing only the 3 dailies that gave Cataloged Research, looted the few chests that were in my path and called it a night. All told, I spent a single riftkey and maybe 90 minutes and turned in 7k research, plus what I got from this quest. In case you can't math, that's enough for 81 more Repaired Riftkey

This quest just screams Blizzard. Through this Shadowlands expansion this quest is Blizzard in a nutshell lol so bad. As previous comments have pointed out. You have to loot 25 items from certain mobs which have a super low drop rate and you have 15 minutes to collect them, and then you have to buy another key just to go back into that dimension and kill those mobs again. Best advice is run around and look for the few caches that are up, if they are up. I just want to give a golf clap to the person who thought this one up lol

For those having difficulty with this quest, I recommend getting the add-ons Handy Notes: Shadowlands and World Quest Tracker. These two together show the potential spawn points for the chests, which can contain 1 to 5 of the items. Note that the one in the South West is inside the Gromit cave, normally on the right as you go in, up the slope, or down and around the corner to the left or to the right. The one in the South East can either be behind a tree on the South island - you need to have done the quests to get the grappling hook to reach this one - or in the area from the Mawsworn southern edge up to the Mawsworn in the north.

Easiest of all, is a friendly "/1 Any groups going for Rift quest?" when you start, (or, as I do, random invites to people you see). Having a tank + DPS gets this done in 10 minutes or less, within one Rift timer. If you're going for all 4 chests, and not all stealth classes, it may take 2 stones.

Extremely tough mobs, requiring cooldowns for every fight, hundreds of worthless little trash mobs, and what seems to be a 1% drop rate. I'll keep the quest open and untracked in case I have to kill any of the mobs during other rift trips, so I may complete this quest in a few months.
First key, completely used, (also collecting one quest item for research): 4/25..

I believe there was a stealth nerf to the drop rate this week. The smaller mobs were always a low drop rate so nothing new there, but in previous weeks the Soulstarved Shadower were dropping a few Korthian Repository each and today they are only dropping 1 each. In prior weeks I was able to complete the quest using only 1 rift key, today I had to use 2 keys to finish the quest despite being in a group.

Also, I highly recommend seeking out the 4 Riftbound Cache that spawn every day, even if you have to go out of your way a bit since they always contain a few Korthian Repository.

I think the fastest way to get this done is to kill the Famished Darkness mobs in the rift. They drop 6 Korthian Repository each. The problem is that they have about 700k hp. I was able to solo them as a 239ilvl Vengeance DH, so I assume other tank specs would be able to solo them as well.

I tried to solo as Havoc and it was a bit rough. I had to kite the mob to get out of all the spells he casts and eventually I broke his leash and he reset. It was much as easier as Veng as I could just sit in the middle of everything and not die to it. Possibly doable as a DPS spec with enough gear, but would not recommend.

If you kill 3 of the Famished Darkness and loot 4 chests you'll have 22 Korthian Repository. This means you only need 3 from the other mobs in the rift.

I see it mentioned here but not very well spelled out. The rares that appear sometimes, in the rift, and you have to go in and pull them out are guaranteed to drop 3 x Korthian Repository each.
These are Deadsoul Hatcher, Screaming Shade and Silent Soulstalker

The ones that appear from random rift portals after killing a Rare, like Towering Exterminator do not drop it. Seems stupid to me they don't.

If you do not finish the quest in a week, you'll find it next week already in your quest log. You don't lose the progress from previous week.

WoW is hard and challenging.
After doing this quest on a couple of toons I have found ways to mitigate the low drop rate.
And it can be fun if you are not just down to being frustrated.

#1 Group up with friends. Pug with people running around being frustrated also.
#2 with your group, kill the Soulstarved Shadower there are more than enough in the zone to finish the quest in 15 minutes. Don't' forget the elite spawns, Deadsoul Hatcher, Screaming Shade, and the Silent Soulstalker.
#3 find the caches, read where they are on this page.

The most valuable strategy is to GROUP UP. I understand if your time to play is not the most populated but there are strategies to get around that also, you should know them within your style of game play. If you don't know how to meet up with people I suggest a non-MMO.

It seems the mobs in the core Maw (as those you fight for A Shady Place during the NF assault) don't seem to drop repos, even though they're highlighted as such upon mouseover, and they drop relics and boxes. I fought a Famished Darkness for a few minutes just to make sure.

Just adding my 2cents about the frustrating time and resources this quest takes. killed elites as others suggested... only one of the 6 killed dropped anyting, an it was only 1 item. left the quest area due to the time this was taking, logged in the next day only to find that another key is needed.... run back to get one. Died mid mob, only to find that death also boots you off this quest so run back to get another key. probably wont finish it in time for server shut down.

Whoever comes up with these boring, ill rewarding, time consuming quests needs to be fired. That person deserves to have legos scattered throughout their house during a blackout at night and to be sent a glitterbomb with hot fart spray

This quest is actually quick and fun if you know how to do it.

If you found my post in this section, you probaly sorted the comments from Newest First instead of Highest Rated, because
there are so many negative posts in this section and the highest rated comments aren't that helpful.

This quest is meant to be done in a group and I will give you some tips how to complete this quest with very little frustration and quite a
bit of reward and satisfaction.

Here is what you need to know:

01] The "Rift Portal" is located inside a cave at /way 41 42

02] Purchase one or more Repaired Riftkey from Archivist Roh-Suir before you proceed.

03] Each rift key gives you 15 minutes of rift time and that's all you need to collect the 25 quest items.

04] Go to the Rift Portal and click on Group Finder.

05] Click on "Start a Group".

06] In the Title section type in "Rift Casual - wm off - read desc"

07] In the description area type in:

"This is a non hardcore group that will stick together to run around in the maw simply to kill mobs and collect quest items for the
Lost Research quest. We are not doing a worm hole run or anything special ... just a simple 15 minute kill for quest items."

08] Then click on "List" to list your group.

09] Monitor the eyeball icon in the upper right by your minimap and wait for people to join.

10] As soon as some one wants to join, click "accept". It does not matter what class, spec, ilvl, or anything because if they want to join
let them, you don't need a perfect party. Five hunters can do this quest just as easily as a well balanced tank + healer + 3dps.

11] Put a raid marker icon on yourself and as each party member joins put a raid marker icon on them.

I like to use the following scheme:

Hunter - green triangle
Priest or Druid - white moon
Mage or Shaman - blue square
Demon Hunter or Warlock - purple triangle
Warrior - yellow star
Rouge, Monk, or other - orange circle
Save skull and red x for enemies, but you'll never need to mark those for obvious reasons.

These raid marker icons are very helpful because you no longer need to rely on the map or the mini map to stay in a tightly niched
group. Also, there are areas where there is some darkness that clouds your vision, and again, the raid marker icons give that extra
visability.

12] Announce to your party to enter the rift portal and enter the rift portal.

13] The 15 minute timer starts.

14] Kill some mobs and you will notice that one of the party members seems to know what they are doing because they are tending to
lead the group.

15] When you see, for example, that the warrior is moving away from the group, announce to the party ... "follow the star".

16] Mount up and follow the warrior to the first elite enemy and kill it.

17] After that elite is dead, mount back up and follow the star to the next elite.

18] Repeat until the 15 minutes expires.

By the time your 15 minutes is up, you will have collected all 25 of the quest items plus some extra goodies and you're done.
You had fun and so did everyone else in your party.

I ignored this quest for a long time because the comments made it sound pointless and hellish. I got bored today and decided to give it a go, in my first rift I got 24/25 Korthian Repositories by just focusing on the elites... maybe they increased the drop rate... but its no longer as bad a quest as I had anticipated.

I'm just gonna chime in and agree with everyone who hates quests like this. Boring, frustrating, and utterly not worth the effort for the reward. After killing about 25 mobs and getting 3 items (RNG be damned) I abandoned the quest. As for finding a group, I tried and tried; no luck. So a big middle finger to the a-hole at Blizz who thought this was a well-thought-out quest. You have no future as a game designer so please just quit already.

There are 4 Riftbound Cache scattered around in the Rift and each drops 4 Korthian Repository. That'll get you more than half way. The just need to kill the elite mobs for a guaranteed drop rate for the rest.

Just stopped by to agree that two months later, this is by far the worst quest I have done in this entire expansion. Including everything in the Maw before I unlocked riding. If I weren’t so determined to max rep and be done with Korthia, I wouldn’t torture myself doing this.

It takes me 2-3 rift keys to finish this quest, no joke. And FYI, if you’re fighting a mob and kill it right before the 15 minute timer for being in the rift expires, you can’t loot once it pulls you out of the rift. I hate this quest with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

So based on my experience

there are basicly four types of mobs in rifts

small skittering shadows drops no repository
bigger normal mobs like Soulless vengeance, Hungering Shadow and plants have around 25-30% droprate of repository
bigger elite mobs named Soulstarved Shadower consistently dropped 1 repository every time I killed it (around 190K life)
there are also rares that sometimes spwans in vicinity of the rift (that you pull out of the rift) that consaistently drop 3 repositories every time, so best to get them near timeout

all in all it took me two rifts (around 30 minutes) to get 19/25 repositories so it can be done in an hour or so (while also collecting T4 relics)
bit annoing and I would definitely not do it on weekly basis just for 1K research, but it also provides 800 rep

The first two times I did it "wrong". I once even needed to buy a new key to go back into the rift to complete the quest.
But then I learned...

The best strategy is to go hunt the big 775k HP guys (greenish large elemental dudes). They always drop 6 relics.
Get four of them and then one of the 200k mobs (blackish's large manifestation dudes -- they always drop 1) and you're done.

I usually have about 6 minutes left on the clock when I leave the rift. Good luck!

I'm trying to grind rep for Codex, so picked up this quest. I had one key and inadvertently clicked/quit, sigh. I bought another one yesterday. I'm not sure if it's me or the #%$^ key today (AFTER reset), but although I've been to several portal areas, I cannot enter the rift. Any ideas? I have 15/25 of the Korthian Repository and I want to get done with this. TIA

Description

We have uncovered a promising source of Korthian research. Previous Archivists hid knowledge within repositories that were then placed within the rift. I fear that the repositories are no longer safe and that shades of that realm will consume them. It is imperative that we secure this research before it is lost forever.
