Pretty poor drop rate about 30% at best guess, makes this quest tedious to do, even worse due to faction tapping.

That said the quest item can be reused on the same mob which can make killing mobs a little quicker.

The non-elite rays in the marked area (Coral Skates, Fathom Rays) also drop the quest items. They can be pulled with the hook, or without ;)

Another tedious buggy quest. There aren't enough of the normal level appropriate mobs that drop this. It's not a 100% drop rate. Coral Skates don't really drop the item, Fathom Ray Broodkeepers MIGHT, elite Sky Rays all bug out when you try to use the quest item to pull them to the ground and evade. The Broodmothers pull more mobs, that ALSO don't drop the items. Good luck wasting a lot of time on this! (Not to mention all the random other plant creatures - they really seem out of place - in the area that will attack you so you can't mount up to speed up.)

The Fathom Hook lasts 4 seconds with a 5 second CD and you can use it over and over on the same MOB. It does 16.5k damage (Pierce) per tick so keep it up!

On a high population realm this quest can take forever to do. It's horribly tedious and would be bad enough if the mobs had a 100% droprate. Makes me regret choosing this ally.

In a twist surely designed to incite madness, N'Zoth has clearly infected the local wildlife of Nazjatar with something of the opposite, because I've killed a dozen rays and gotten one piece of Fathom Flesh among all of them!

I created a macro to ease the pain in doing this. It simply targets a Coral Skate and use the hook. It tries the best to avoid dead mobs but sometimes it sticks to a dead body. When that happens just walk a bit from the body and spam the macro again.

Just create a macro containing this code, assign to a keybind, walk and spam the button. No more looking to the sky trying to guess where are these guys.

This is dire - as others have said, the drop rate is awful and the quest takes far far too long. Just not worth it. Apologies, Hunter Akana, no Fathom Ray Flesh for you.

Lot of bony fathoms there because the drop rate of the flesh is pretty low - nice try to bring back Classic feeling.

This is fel-levels of difficult if you just attack fathom rays, because they are tough and the drop rate is crappy, probably 10% at best, 1 in 10.

HOWEVER, If you use the Fathom Hook provided in your inventory bags, and use it A LOT, the droprate rises to around 50% or so, 1 in 2 on average, and the kill rate becomes quite easy. How?

Look for a fathom broodkeeper or whatever, and tag the coral skates that were originally flying with it. Keep in mind that *summoned* coral skates are not targettable, so look for ones already there, just flying around normally. Target one coral skate, target the other if there is a 2nd, then target the brood dude with the hook. (Looks like a brownish backwards J in your inventory.) The bleed effect will help finish off the skates, as will your Ankoan or Kelfin daily helper, though you can pop any DOTs you have, or aoe, whatever. Once you've hooked the broodkeeper, rehook it AGAIN once the cd is off, and the bleed effect will continue to whittle away its hp faster than you alone can manage.

My very squishy glass cannon mage can manage these just fine by pulling carefully and in the correct order. Remember, take down the lowest hp creatures first, so they stop dpsing you (if they're dead, they can't keep hurting you every second), then whittle away the biggest dps dude. Your hook is your frend.

Another classic way where Blizz punish their players just because they can. One of the most annoying daily quests in this expansion: tedious, slow, repetitive, boring, annyoing, everything you want, except pleasure and good. If you are on a highly populated server and you try to do this quest in "play peak times" (usually evening, server time) this quest can take even 30-40 min. Quests like this made me in the past to take even a few months break. Blizz, you loose subscribers, you don't win them. Change your ideology...

you'd think the elite Bloated Sky Ray would be a garunteed drop but no, they seem to have a worse droprate than the non-elites

Get away from the crowd and hunt at 33,43. Lots of rays that are usually a nuisance around other quests there.

Little tip for finishing this without running around trying to chase them all down.
If you pull the Fathom Ray Broodkeeper, they will spawn more rays every 10-20sec, and their spawns can also drop the meat.

So if you pull two or more, you can just wait until they've spawned a bunch, and just burst them down, this will save you some time!
