Good luck with this one. I have had characters find this rod on the first yeti killed. Other characters had to kill MANY yetis to get the drop. Yes, the yetis you have to kill are in the cave on Darrow Hill. Any yeti there (or right outside) can drop it.

I've done this quest twice. The first time, it took nearly three hours for the rod to drop. The second time, it was only about a half hour. Either way, it seems the drop rate is very low. It's a good quest to do though if you don't mind straight up grinding... overall, it yields some decent xp, plus the yeti cave has some good ore spawns in it.

Ugh, like the others said, horrible drop rate. I had to kill about 80 Yeti's to finally get it.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the low drop rates...I killed every Yeti in the cave and didn't get a drop.

i just killed 3 moobs and then the Rod drops, but i can belive its a low drop rate on it but i got alot luck!

I have killed over 100 of them and haven't seen it drop. I might come back to it eventually but Im done for now. Only reason I stayed is because of how much leather I got in there.

Eventually, you will get the rod. If you are fortunate to get the rod outside the cave, you must enter the cave to put out two of the three flames. So don't run off in celebration (as I did).

Coords for the flames are:
Azel 44.28 (turn right inside the entrance, same level)
Veraz 44.26 (bottom floor, near the pool of water)
Uzel is at the Growless Cave (37.67)

Helcular's grave is at 52/53; reached easily by skirting the river to avoid SouthShore guards - his grave is the first you'll come upon once you reach the graveyard. Helcular rises from the grave - no need to stick around further.

Great quest for increasing skinning skills.

Not really all that bad. Just plan on having a plate of nachos, some tequila, and a whole afternoon with nothing to do.

Got a few green drops out of it and they drop a little cash (which adds up after 175 yeti!) and went from level 34 to 35 just on the grinding xp.

Persevere!

Got mine in about 3 minutes. I killed 1 guy outside, walked in attacked one, aggro'ed another, got it, turned and a spawned one by the exit on the way out..

took longer to run there.

Everybody here is talking about the cave yeti, however after cleaning out the cave 3 times I was bored of that and I went towards the mountain yeti (Alterac) cleaned out all the yeti’s from about 33,71 to 33,51 via 40,63 when I was down to the last three (!) it dropped :) I gathered 155 leather and hide in the process.
Moral of the story is you can get it from the mountain yeti as well.

After killing a truck load of the giant and mountain yetis up in Alterac I got the rod after three kills of the Cave Yetis at around loc 47, 32 in Hillsbrad

Don't even think to accept this quest as it is a waste of precious lvling time :S i think i cleaned the cave 5 times and then by accident i killed one yeti outside of the cave and it dropped lol. however if u are grinding then this is exactly the quest that u are looking for.

I might suggest that if your not a Skinner then this might not be the quest for you. I've played a lot at this game and this is the least productive quest by far. I collected 103 pieces of leather and the Rod has yet to drop. Sometimes I wonder what the thinking is behind these low result quests. Maybe it will drop tomorrow.

The Cave Yeti's have a average drop rate of 1.0% which is extremely low.Start killing them at 47.31 and go to the cave.Normally u only need to do 1 run in the cave and u get the rod but if u aren't lucky just go to Tarren Mill, empty your bags and do another run.If it takes more then 3 runs its probably a bad day for you.Go do another quest and come back the next day.This is a very nice q for every skinner cause the yeti's are skinnable.Mostly u get Medium Leather and sometimes even Heavy Leather! Average xp for a lvl 37 is 96xp for killing 1 Yeti.Average money drop is 2s. The cave also got a chest and a few veins if any1 needs them. If u need any info about them, just take a quick visit at http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=2248#M0z .

It's a really bad drop rate but as a 31 warrior it was crazy good xp. if you have the patience just trun on the TV and keep killing them untill you get the rod. took me just under 300 kills but gave me like 45k xp and i got to level 32. they droped 50c-1s so alot of cash in the end. the main problem is that i got killed by Alliance alot. hilsbrad is contested terrirtory so your always at risk but i had lots of problems because they would sneak up on me while i was handling 1 or two yetis at a time and kill me, and the nearest grave yard is in tarren mill. all in all it was pretty easy xp for me :)

Many people think every time they kill somebody, their chances go up.But that is NOT correct. Every time you kill somebody, it has again 1% chance. So sometimes u have it quickly and other times it can be a pain in the ***.

Small schedule to make it clear ^^:
1% is NOT : 1 + 1 turns into 2%! ==> NOT!!
1% is : 1 + 1 stays 1%+0! ==> True
( Drop rate can be different, it was just a example)
When u kill somebody, the drop chance stays the same. It does not increase. Expect spending long times on locations sometimes.

1. Go to the Darrow Hill cave where you found the rod!.
2. Run around in the cave and grind untill you find the 2 flames!
3. When you are done in there, jump out and run north!
4. Run to 37,68 ( Alterac Mountains )

I did this and had a nice result in earning like 5 bars of xp :)

easy ass quest....if you count grinding for an hour or so easy. good expierence and also heaven for the skinners. if you get the rod after a kill or 2....i hate you.

As of Patch 2.3, I believe they may have increased the drop rate on the rod (either that or I'm really lucky since it just dropped for me on my first yeti kill)

ZOMGs, is the drop rate still horrible! Even with the new 2.3 patch, I must have clean out this cave top to bottom, outside and in, at least three times before the stupid rod finally dropped. As a skinner for the $$$, I had four stacks of medium and three stacks of heavy leather by that time. Small compensation for all the time.

Now the fun part is having to go back into that cave for the follow up... >_<

Went up to the growless cave. Just as I reached the top of the climb (still outside!), I killed ONE yeti, and GOT THE DROP.

I have been here with my lvl 28 Lock just for grinding....!!! Yetis give very good amount of Exp. so i used to grind my undead chars. there first until 29+ and then do the quests...!!!!
But they used to drop me the rod from the 10th kill or something...a bit lucky :P

About the grind i am talking about the Cave yetis cuz the others appear deep red in lvl 28 char. (In my opinion if someone stays about an hour at 28 he can get nearly enough XP to 30)

Also the cave has many materials for miners to mine too....!!!

This quest chain is a waste of time; there is no reward at the end besides the exp. Imho, if you aren't even getting paid then it isn't worth the effort.

I dont know what to say about this quest more than that i hate it i cleared darrow hill cave 3 times not getting the drop and blizzard dont care about any reports about quest item not droping they only reply whit it is up to the player to find the item...

This quest has some drop-rate issues. The drop-rate is horribly low, on the northern side of Darrow Hill, there is a cave and you will see a few yetis outside. You have to kill those, just keep killing until you get the rod. Good quest for racking up experience and skinning, but if you want a quick quest to finish, this is not the quest for you.

Blizzard has increased the drop rate on some quest. The ones that I have noticed most is

Humbert's Sword
And this quest.

Both quests have had their drop rate increased significantly, you can gather your item in under 10 kills.

It's of course mentioned in the "Dropped by..." for the rod itself, but you can get the rod off the yeti surrounding the Growless cave in Alterac. (The location of the Flame of Uzel.)

It may be considered 'out of the way', especially being that you have to return to the cave for the second part, but I've found the area to be far easier to farm without Alliance intervention.

This cave is at Darrow Hill, SW of Tarren Mill, and NE of Hillsbrad Fields.

Coords 46, 32

I cleaned out most of the Yeti inside the cave, and was starting on round two, when I got the drop, inside the cave.

When you get to the next quest in this series, you'll have to bring the rod back to this same cave for two of the three flames, so note where the two green flames are.

The third flame is in another yeti cave due north of this one, in the snowy area.

There is one at 58,68 (that is dead center with me standing in the campfire)

and there is one at 47,81.

For those without cosmos, take the road north that goes toward Tarren Mill until it says you have entered Alterac Mountains, then head East or West on top of either of those rises (hills, whataver), center of either one has a camp.

Hmm funny thing, Im doing these quests on my Blood Elf Mage 70lvl to gain reputation with UC and that Rod dropped off first Yeti I killed. Drop rate could have been increased or I just had luck, dunno.

For me, i killed all the Yetis I found outside of the mine, but i got Helcular's Rod after killing the Yeti at the entrance to the mine.

Just keep plowing through the cave till you get it. Very rarely did I pull more than one yeti at a time. That said, they do have a rather fast re-spawn rate.

Never again.

Spent hours on my rogue trying to get this to drop and it never did.

Tried again today on my paladin, musta killed about 100 yetis and still no drop.

I mean....what the hell.

drop rate has for sure incresed I also got on 3rd drop, also when you go to the grave there was 2 lvl 38 stealthed shadowy assassins there, took me by suprise sure they were not there before.

So I took my little level 25 paladin to Southshore today to get the flight point. It seemed nice there, with bears and lions in the mid-20s that would provide decent leveling and- wait a second, why am I drawing aggro? Helcular's Remains? What the @#^& just killed me?

This quest was marked obsolete by Blizzard and cannot be obtained or completed.

Retrieve Helcular's Rod from the Yeti and bring it back to Novice Thaivand in Tarren Mill.

Description

Master Helcular was almost complete with his transformation into a Lich when a human lynch mob discovered his ritual lair in the hills and brutally killed him. To make matters worse they buried his corpse in the Southshore cemetery.

Such disregard for the great wizard is unacceptable. As his apprentice I shall see to it that the rains of vengeance fall upon the town of Southshore.

We will need Helcular's Rod first. Yeti overtook his ritual lair. Undoubtedly one of the beasts has it.
