The book you're searching for, is in the middle, and huge building near Araj.
A lot of "Musty Tomes" is scattered on the floor. The book for the quest has a 20% drop chance, so just keep opening them until it "drops"

There's two groups with 4 peeps guarding the building, so to get inside you'll have to suicide if you're below lvl 59/60 probably.

When you use a book, upon completing the "spell" one or two level 55 undead will spawn (they give you an annoying debuff as melee).

Starts the quest Brother Carlin.

Done as 58 Warrior.

The trick with this quest is to carefully examine the books on the floor. "Trapped" tomes that spawn guards have a clear white/gray split on their pages, whereas the real thing has a smooth transition from white to gray. This may only become apparent if you zoom in and highlight a book, but it's worth it to avoid unneccessary fights.

Also, if you're doing this as a 'lock, use Life Tap and Hellfire to suicide in and out, as you won't lose durability and won't have to fight to undead out front.

At 56 I was able to sneak in and out without aggroing the 4 guard parties (as a pally). Also, the tip about the books above is very neat - thanks for sharing!

This is very easy to sneak in if you are 56 or higher. Sneak around the building from the west and south and hug the building close and you will not aggro the 4 man mobs. However I have clicked on 10 booksand still do not have it. The book also spawn 2 55-56 mobs.

I noticed that no one has said where the town hall actually is for this quest. It is the large building in the center of Andorhal, cords are aprox. 43,69. Also, there may be one mob or two, it seemed to swing on the flip of a coin.

Okay the REAL trick is this, the debuff called Musty tome trap expirees in about a minute. When it does the ghouls die with it automatically. You just need to stay alive for 30 seconds and you can loot all the books you want. Handy for my 52 druid that solod this quest.

Like the dude posted above with the picture, i went in there lvl 52 looked at all the books first person view saw the book that was all Grey on pages opened it and bam! it was that easy! thanks for the good tip man!

When my wife and I did this quest, we weren't aware of the shading difference between the "real" and the fake books, but we did notice the "real" one spawned in the same place, along the back wall behind a barrel. only opened 2 of the fake ones, found the real one by accident, then waited for it to respwan without opening any others. Not sure if it was a fluke or not, but might be worth a shot to check that location first to possibly avoid any debuffs/annoying battles (that give no xp as well)

Not sure if this has been mentioned before and sorry if it has, but if you stand behind the books when you open them, more often than not (for me at any rate), the trap is not activated. You just see a strange blue eve that shoots beams(??) in a direction and goes back in.
NOTE: This does not work 100% of the time

Location: 43,69
There is a group of 5 mobs outside spell caster and melee which are hard to go through.
* Bring a Friend to help

The Spawned Critter has a 2 minutes debuff which stacks.
Reducing Strength and Stamina by 100 (stack x 5)
And 47 sec debuff to movement imparing by 60% and Attack speed by 28%
It becomes harder to fight them.

I can 100% confirm that the real book definitely looks different from all of the other books, I just did the quest yesterday and posted about this here on the book's page a few minutes after.

First and foremost, the fake books are indeed all bottom half white pages and top half gray pages.

Secondly, the fake book pages look to be a lower texture resolution. They don't look like actual pages if that makes any sense. The real book's pages will look like pages are supposed to look. When you see it, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

And be sure to hover your mouse over the books to light them up some, the room is rather dark. :)

I did this quest at 54. The mobs inside are not to bad. but then again I am a shaman Lol! The debuff can stack on you up to 5 times totaling for a loss of 100 stam and 100 str.

If you do this at a low level like I did watch those debuffs it will make or break you.

Make sure you have free bag space. If you dont physically loot the ruined tomes it will stay on the floor and not make way for what could be the book you are there to retrieve. Also has a chance to respawn the mobs and you will have to fight them twice for something you already cleared and waste your time.

Just did it awhile ago and the correct book surely looks different. As the above poster mentioned the correct book might not be there, so you have to open the wrong ones to get the correct one to spawn. Tested on 10th May 07

I did the quest today 5/30/07 and the book trick did not seem to work. The book looked no different from the rest of them, they all had the white line and it seemed to be just a random spawn. It was easy to sneak past the mobs in front of the building as a 57 paladin, just fight your way around the side, avoid the 57 Elite undead patrolling and then hug the wall, jump the stone ramp and walk right in. The stackable debuff the mobs put on you can be removed with cleanse or other powers, but the one you get from the book itself cannot be removed. Sitting in the middle of the room with the books the coords are 43.5, 69.5

43,69 room entrance cords. Simple quest only had to kill 3 of them to get the book.

As a rogue this was mindnumbingly simple. Stealth over to the house, stealth inside, find the right book as per the instructions above, restealth and sneak back to Chromie... Took me around 1 min, with no fighting at all...

63 pally was clearing out the front steps so i just walked in, no proper book for minutes so started opening false books.
after about 1 minute the zombies from traps disapear

The most tedious quest I've done to date.
Basically you have to run naked and suicide several times into the town hall, once you reach it you look around the room for the book, if you can't find it, you have to open the fake books until the real one spawns. The real book does look like the picture, and it is a higher quality model (the pages look more real), but it was hard to get.
It took me about an hour to complete, and about a 1.5 gold repair charge (didn't go naked until the 4th or so death) on a mage.
But it's worth doing, for the quests afterwards are easy.

The Book IS a random spawn. You may have to burn a couple of the fake ones to get it to spawn.
Go into your video options, MAX out Terrain Texture, and Terrain Detail. Then, get into first person view and look at all the books carefully. The real book will appear to have more pages, better graphics, all one-coloured pages and a faint X on the back of the book.
Confirmed in 2.1.2.

Did this quest tonight, and of 9 books, all of them were fake (checked the coloring as above and they all were top half grey, bottom half white). Not a single one of them was all white.

Wouldn't have been so bad if the spawned mobs actually gave experience :/ Blech. Many minutes wasted not gaining experience.

Same here. All of the books had distinctly different halves, there was no discernable difference even at max settings.

Confirmed, though I found the color difference more pronounced if I didn't mouseover the books.

The faint X on the spine of the book was easy to spot, though.

Did this with two people. First person got the tome in 3 tries, 2nd person had to open up 33 different books to get the darned real one to spawn. >_< Bothersome.

The easiest quest so far, in my view. Asa 57 'Lock, I sneaked around the entrance and into the Hall, no agro, picked up the right book first time (gray in the middle) and hurried out. Just remember to take it easy out, and don't do as I did, bumping into the lvl 56 elite...

Either get a group, or suicide your way in. Pick up books until you get the right one. Go out, use a swift speed potion and run the hell out of Andorhal.

As a 57 Pally I jus' snuck in, found the book by lookin' at the colors of the pages. To sneak in jus' go behind the building to the south side and stick to the wall as close as possible. Make sure that elite pat outside doesn't catch you.

I dunno what level could do that, but I think a 56 might not be able to do it without a fight.

I did this with patch 2.2 and none of the spawned mobs gave XP when killed, even though they gave my rogue a very unhappy debuff that decreased my strength and stamina, stacking up to 5 times.

My rogue was 55 at the time and the spawned mobs were 55 - 56, thus "yellow" to me. I petitioned a GM and from the conversation I had with the GM, these mobs *should* give XP when killed. He filed a bug report. Not a huge issue IMHO but I am surprised that nobody else reported it until today.

Had to clear the room twice before it popped, and it was a surprise when it did as I could see the distinct page split and there was no 'X' on the cover. I actually cancelled the loot to examine the book more closely, but I still couldn't discern between the right book and the wrong ones.

On top of that, the mobs still aren't giving experience. A painful process in an otherwise decent line.

I was able to sneak into the building as a 57 mage by hugging the wall EXTREMELY tightly. Don't have to suicide your way in

Casters, make sure you take a little bit of a break inbetween the tomes. The Debilitating touches stack up quickly and you'll soon find yourself with triple digit hp again...

I just finished this quest. I had to clear a few books before the right one spawned where the first book I'd cleared had been. It did sparkle and it did still have the different pages as detailed above. Still not getting xp from the Decripid Guardian guys.

Well i got in at level 56 simply by running, jumping over the little edge of the stair and then turn left... i even had a level 56elite abbomination in my heels he didn't even pull the group outside its not that hard just relax and do it no big deal

i found out that pages dont really matter... its all the light, i noticed that if i stood at it a certain way, all of them were grey/white split. so i think its just all luck

As some one else said. The book your looking for does NOT sparkle. I spent nearly two and a half hours opening books. If your doing this for XP and not the quest chain. DON'T. You can make 10 times as much XP killing the mobs out side the building then you will doing this quest.

I found the right book within about 10 minutes or so... even if you're on low texture resolution you can tell the difference.

On low texture detail, all of the fake books have solid sides, but the real book you can see stripes for pages.

I get a Annals of Darrowshire from first item I opened. Also don't find any mobs inside (however maybe cleared just before me). Also, there was like 7 books on floor and all spakle the same.

I have done this on 3 characters and everytime it was a pain. I have submitted two screenshots this time.

Two things to remember to keep it easy.
1) if you have some sort of CC the ghouls despawn after a set time of about 1-1.5 minutes. out of 13 clicks i got 2 ghouls 11 times and 1 ghoul 1 time.
2) sometimes you have to click a wrong book to get the right one to spawn if it's not already there. upon inspection the correct book is in very good condition and the wrong books are torn up and tattered. it's not very hard to see the difference.

I approached the entrance to the building from the left side of the door (left if you were facing the doorway head on), coming up and around towards it from the south. From the left side of the building I simply hugged the wall and moved slowly. I was able to do this all the way around and in the front door at level 57 with no aggro from the groups of mobs standing out front. If you come at the door from the left side of the doorway and hug the wall tight and take it slow and easy to make sure you're hugging the wall and doorway as closely as you can, you will be able to get in without attracting aggro.

Then use the method of examining the book's pages -- the all white pages is the one you want, and the ones with half gray/half white pages are fakes. I was in and out with the book in the blink of an eye, and exited the same way... by hugging the wall and heading back out the left side of the building (again, left being the direction if you were facing the front of the building.)

The Fake Books have a darker blue spot in one corner, and do not lines for pages when you look at the side. The real one is all a plain blue and does show pages. hope this helped ^_^

The real book is indeed a different texture, but you may have to open a few dozen fake books before it even spawns into the room. Unless you get lucky. It didn't spawn for me until after I'd opened 11 fake books.

After reading the comments above, I started opening the tomes on the floor waiting for the 'different' one to appear to complete the quest. After a few minutes it hadn't appeared, so I decided to just open every book on the floor hoping this would prompt the quest item to appear. More than 30 minutes have passed (I know this because my self buffs expired) and I can't believe it still hasn't appeared. I am abandoning this quest. What a waste of time.

The book most definitely is random.
What's more, the guardians cast a debuff on you called 'Debilitating touch' which stacks up to 5 times, with each stack reducing your stamina and strength by 20.

It also appears that the guardians die randomly if you tank them long enough.

I got it on the first try. My texture resolution and filtering are both on very low settings, so the books all looked pretty much the same. I may have just been lucky, but I chose the book with the cover that seemed to have a lighter shade of blue than the others. Don't know if that will work for anyone else, though.

I used a strange tatic, but worked at first time too. Around 43.5 67.4 there is a group of scarlets, and they helped me.

I just called the mobs at the door, and ran very close to building wall, so the casters should follow me, cuz of LoS. Once they would attack me, the scarlets came and started to fight them too. At end, there was only me, a ghoul and a scarlet medic. Ghoul died and Scarlet medic evaded, so I could refresh mana and life, kill the medic (optional) and enter building in safety.

Inside the building, you shall notice the spawns really die in about 1 minute. Plus, they don't give loot or experience. So it is REALLY not necessary to kill them. Just keep yourself alive (ofc, if you have heal). As a paladin, I used turn evil twice and they disappeared. Ofc, you may turn only one, and the other I used to recover mana with seal of wisdom.

The full quest chain for The Battle of Darrowshire:

Villains and Heroes do both need to be completed in order to get Marauders. However, Defenders of Darrowshire (the Uncle Carlin chain) does not need to be completed in order to get to The Battle of Darrowshire.

doing it as a 57 rogue right now, i found that if you stand as far away from the book as you can and still grab it, you can stealth right after its done "casting" and you dont have to fight the spawn then.

and when i came in they were all bad =(

The right book never spawned, and i got 2 zombies on me each time i tried open one, this quest takes time, skip it imo.

I did this quest at 54 and if you hugh the wall of the building you can avoid having dieing but if your a hunter you can run into the building and feign death when in the room with the books. It's better to dismiss your pet when doing the feign death or trying to get in your pet my attract the enemy.

Confirmed the grey-shade trick once again.

I probably looted over 50 books, knowing about this trick before I finally got one to spawn... This quest sucks lol, the summoned mobs don't give any EXP, their debuff sucks if your melee, and the double-ghouls can be rough if you aren't prepared.

They made this quest easier (as of 3.0.2). There are glinsters above all books now, the one with the smallest glinsters is the one you need.

If you look carefully at the sparkles coming off the books, the ones with the sparkles going high are useless, look for the ones that the sparkles dont go as high. 3 of the books contain the annals.

It took my guildie and I about 40 fake books before we were able to get a good book to spawn. If you pay close attention to the advice here regarding looking for a smooth gradient on the open end of the book when the right one spawns you should notice it.

Keep in mind that whether you have to mouseover or not to see the difference depends on your screens gamma and brightness. My screen is bright enough that when I hovered over the books I could see no difference. But when not hovered over could see there was a distinct difference between the top grey and bottom white.

THE IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND: The GOOD book may not be there when you enter. It may not be there for a few spawns. You may have to clear the room a few times. It may be even worse if you're sharing the room. Be patient. If you're sure you're the only one in the area. Consider going outside and killing things to keep your XP ticking up. The mobs that spawn from the books give NO xp.

Ok this is so much easier if you do it this way. Look at the stars above the books. All of the stars above the books are more separated and higher up, the right books stars are more condensed and close to the book itself. I noticed that right away when i went in to look for the book. I fought nothing at all inside the inn.

Well, i think that this is a fairly easy quest (other than the books are annoying to open) I did this with a level 53 Human paladin, without suiciding, I chose the left side of the building (if you're facing the back of the building) as there were fewer other mobs sitting around, and had no problem taking the 4 level 55's sitting there (note paladins have special spells for undead, which i have macro'ed as well) i used my bubble, and didn't need to heal, so i think healers 55 and below should have no problem doing this quest without suicide, reguardless of the comment about 58-59 or less have to suicide the mobs, i'd say 57 of any class can take these if you know even basic tactics.
Stay with the books... i had to open 17 of them to get the book lol but hey, that happens. although.. it is kind of bad that the spawns from the trapped books give you exactly 0 exp.

Fallium was right on the money. Looking for the sparkles is the way to go. The sparkles are not as tall on the correct book. Look for knee high to an elf. :)

Wildhorn is totally correct. I went in there as a lvl 54 (after aggroing only one lvl 55) and got the book on the very first try.

Wildhorn's comment is very good! thankyou, did it as a rogue and before using Wildhorns theory i vanished after i'd opened a book. Its at times like these you wish every race had vanish! Oh and look for the 'x' on the spine of the book, also works.

Ok I have been working on this quest forever but I accidentaly made a discovery...

If you have and only if you have the questhelper addon just put your mouse over all the books whatever one says open this and you'll get The Annals of Darrowshire is the real one.

The fake ones do not do this!

Its seems that they *fixed* the white/grey-half theory
What I did notice was that the right book is slightly different from the others,
the outer casing (dont know the right word) is blue just like all others,
but the pages are more yellow, and thicker, you can see the different pages.
Itcomes to this => the pages look older

Today when I was doing this quest I noticed that the in-game quest tracker will actually tell you which tome is real. All of the fake tomes will simply be called "Musty Tome", but the real one will also have underneath it the quest tracker text (The Annals of Darrowshire: 0/1) as well as being called "Musty Tome"

The Anals of Questing.

Debuffs that stack and last two minutes and another debuff that gets re-applied each time you open a faulty tome.

Mobs do not give XP and drop no loot.

And you have to open them all if the correct one doesn't spawn.

The right thing to do is not wait for the drop, but drop this quest and get the hell out.

I did this quest as a lvl 55 warrior, and i did suicide to get into the hall and I had read on this site to look for grey in the middle so I did and I had looked for a grey line straight across but what it really is, is a brownish-grey "line" not in the center of the book going up and down not side to side, I just thought i should post this so no one in the future gets confused.

Confirmed the sparkles still work.
I was looking for subtle differences in the sparkles, but the difference between the sparkles on fake books and the real ones is immediately noticeable.
The sparkles only go up a short way from the real book, not all the way to the roof like on the fake ones.

I can confirm both of these clues are still available.

Easiest to spot the sparkle difference for a distance - probably waist high on a human. The sparkles on incorrect books go close to the height of the ceiling.

Looking at one end of the book, it's easy to see the difference in page colour. However, not as easy to spot on a mouse-over.

I had to open 4 books to get the correct one to spawn.

Just in case you are going crazy trying to identify which one is the real one by looking at the shading differences....there is a chance that NONE of the books currently spawned are the real one.

In fact I just cleared the entire room TWICE and haven't gotten the real one yet; very annoying.

Edit 2: It finally decided to show up on the fifth clear.

Lol i tried ages with the X on the bind and the white/black pages trick and kept getting in fights and it turned out the right one says musty tome annals of darrowshire while the rest just say musty tome........I feel retarded for only noticing that now lol

Easy quest as a lvl 55 druid. Prowl in, find the book with the X on the spine (it was the one closest to the door btw) an prowl out. Easy XP. Also, the X is very faint, kinda hard to see.

I just got sooo lucky with this quest, I was standing beside the building and suddenly someone distracted them,and they started running towards him/her, meanwhile I got inside and took the annals :))

Just did this as a lvl 54 druid. Prowled in, grabbed the book, prowled out. Didn't aggro anything. The comments helped for finding the right book. I noticed when you point at the right book Questhelper tells you that the book has the item.

With the Quest tracking feature they added, it is no longer neccessary to examine each book so closely. The correct book will have "The Annals of Darrowshire 0/1" on mouseover; the fake ones will simply have "Musty Tome" on mouseover.

I picked up 14 ruined tomes before I finally got The Annals of Darrowshire. Be patient... :D

There's NO WAY to tell... Quest ABANDONED.... they can shove this one where the sun don't shine. It's very annoying and not worth doing anymore. There's way better ways to get experience.
