Generally, the expression 'burden of proof' describes the standard that a party seeking to prove a fact in court must satisfy to have that fact legally established.

There are different standards in different circumstances.

For example, in criminal cases, the burden of proving the defendant’s guilt is on the prosecution, and they must establish that fact beyond a reasonable doubt.

In civil cases, the plaintiff has the burden of proving his case by a preponderance of the evidence.

A "preponderance of the evidence" and "beyond a reasonable doubt" are different standards, requiring different amounts of proof.

An accurate recreation of the absolutely asinine tests that people in antiquity performed on people to determine if they were connected to the supernatural or not.

I think it's interesting to note, their custom is to allow the accused to chose the means they wish to prove their innocence. TWO of the suggestions from the townspeople were,

1) "Put fire to the skin. A witch's skin won't burn." (Or words to that affect). "That's why we hang them."
2) "Put a rock on them under water. If they survive, they're a witch." (Again, words to that affect.)

So, that leads me to believe at least one person chose to be tested with fire and another chose to be drowned to prove they were innocent of being a witch. Who would do that?

This being a game not withstanding, my point is, why would a programmer come up with those as a test since no one in their right mind would chose them. I understand, our history has those "tests" to prove witchcraft. But, let's all remember, the accused didn't "chose" those tests. They were forced upon them by the church. Usually because the church coveted the land the "accused" owned or some other wealth. Of course they knew innocent or not they'd get the land or wealth since if they're dead from proving their innocence they don't need the land. If they're dead because they somehow survived the "test" then there were hanged for witchcraft. In which case, the land was taken because they were proved to be a witch. Whatever the outcome, the church took possession of the land. . . or wealth the accused owned.

Sorry for the rant, I got a little carried away. I'm a witch and get slightly emotional when I think about what they did during the "Witch Trials" in Boston. 90% of those "tried as witches" during that time were simply well off and had no affiliation with anyone practicing the ancient arts. The church just wanted their, I keep saying land, that was the usual wealth back then.

Edit: Then, as she passed each test, Constable Henry Framer remains "unconvinced"? Really programmers? Does the "good" Constable stand to profit from her death somehow?
Surely your short sightedness could have come up with a viable alternative to finding the truth rather than continuing to accuse her of witchcraft. Like maybe, ask her to help find the real source of the problem? No, no, that would mean the "good" Constable was actually . . . good.

I think we have everything we need to conduct three of the villagers' tests. Let us hope this is enough to convince them. I'm sure Constable Framer is chomping at the bit to proceed with his trial, and I would prefer it if you were the one to administer the tests.
