This flashback is where the retconning begins. The War of the Ancients Illidan was mildly obsessed with glory (and Tyrande) and certainly wasn't making these "grim but necessary" decisions - which for that matter, a commander of Ravencrest's caliber should have understood and condoned.

Illidan was indeed taxing the Moon Guard magi in battles by demanding too much of them, but I don't recall reading that he actually killed any of them in the process. Either way, eventually Rhonin was tasked with leading them instead as he could manage that job much more responsibly.

This might have been what triggered Illidan to head to the palace, as evidently his great destiny (implied by his golden eyes) wasn't to lead the Moon Guard in battle. I'd check but the books are thick ;) the point is, Illidan was more concerned with personal glory (and impressing Tyrande) than saving the world. That's not to say he didn't intentionally play a significant role in thwarting the demons though; for all his carelessness he was always against them. A hero if yet not with entirely heroic motivations.

ok since this quest doesn't seem very clear, you have to do this OUTSIDE of the instance

go to the area and go up in the arena building. if you see a named mob called Araxxas you're in the right area.

as a pally I found it easier to jump into the arena, go to the grounds keeper and get ported out then run up the to the top of the arena. it might not be advisable since you do get flagged for PVP (and like it's beta so there's not many people around)

as for the scenario itself, you're fighting endless waves of demons, you'll get new abilities as you sacrifice more mages and upon reaching various stages. the easiest method I had was just beeline to each portal and gather all the demons together, use your first ability to kill them all then click on the portal.

you can also double back to previous portals if you're having problems

So I got in the scenario, to first boss, across rampart, sacrificed my mages to get first ability, used that and got the lady down to little health...now there are no more mages to sacrifice....even when I run back to portal to refill health. The screen just keeps telling me there are no targets in area. I have clicked on them all...even dps tigers. There are mages down steps in front of portal but they are kneeled and head bowed and don't do anything....is the scenario bugged now?

Enter the Black Rook Hold area through the main gate, but don't go past the end of the red carpet. Go through the door to the right, it should take you to the rampart above the pvp arena. Keep going past the Risen Soldiers and you will reach an area called Darkpens. A mob called Araxxas is also there. That's where Xe'Ra will contact you.

So unrelated note, while I was doing this entire scenario I really didn't want to siphon any of the moonguard for additional power. It was hard as heck but I did manage to get all the way to the Nihilam Portal with just the initial 4 Siphoned moon guard soldiers and 1 ability (Lots of kiting and running around and using Red & Jarod as bait/tanks for me to open the Moon Guard portals & dying occurred!). Now when I got to the Nihilam portal I saw that it was immune to my auto attacks and realized It wanted me to siphon my moon guard to get them....

HOWEVER

I also saw that my Moon Guard troops that were with me, had aggroed onto the portal.. And were attacking it, as well as damaging it! Meanwhile all the demons continously kept attacking me and didn't go off to kill my moon guard. Here's a gif of me sitting patiently while my Moon Guards slowly whittle away at the portal.

Yes it was tedious, unecessary, and completely pointless since in the end the outcome would be the same regardless but I really wanted to do it for the fun of it. It's still not done but I'll post the outcome here as a reply to my post, the portal is currently at 47% while I'm typing all this up. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the scenario with only sacrificing 4 Moon Guards.

"Fun" fact: if you are too far away from your minions (say, because you were trying to kite Xalian back to the portal to beat her faster) when you go to use arcane siphon it fails.

42.2, 46.4 by Araxxas in Val'sharah, on an upper level terrrace (you can see the sky above you). Once X'era says something to you, you can click the extra action button to enter her "memories" (a scenario that might take you 15-30 minutes).

For Balaadur, the boss in the big lightning covered structure, you need to first open the portal at 43.7, 50.9 and sacrifice enough moon guards, then you'll get your 3 ability, Fury of the Cosmos. Once you click it, you'll have a raybeam in front of you, just aim it at nearby mobs to kill them, then focus it on the center of big lightning covered structure. Once it's destroyed, Balaadur comes out, but he doesn't autoengage, so you might want to get your mana below 25% to sacrifice more mages with 6 (Arcane Siphon) for good measure, to top your mana back to 100% before pulling. (Yeah, I'm that heartless). When fighting Balaadur, a combination of 3 to beam him, and 2 to disengage, kills him pretty quickly. He also casts a circle on the ground I assume you have to run out of.

The last boss is easier. Jump down into the arena, and when you gain the 4 ability, use that on him. Once you're out, you can go back to your class hall to turn the quest in to X'era (assuming it works the same way for all classes).

If you're on the final boss (the giant infernal) and wondering why you can't damage him and are unable to sacrifice any moonguard, you need to go out of mana first before the option to siphon their power appears.

I am able to enter the scenario. I get to Xalian, and right-click to auto attack. When I get to the point where she paralyzes me and the mages, I do not see HOW to sacrifice the mages to proceed. I do not have a button for this, and I understand that AFTER sacrificing the mages, I get the first ability. But again, I can't figure out how to do the sacrificing. Can someone advise?

If you're like me, and forget to turn in the Red Axe quest, simply drop the Ravencrest one and redo it. I got so focused on the scenario and reckoned I could worry about it later and forgot about the quest entirely. You do have the redo the scenario but once you know what's going on, it will go faster....

Go to area behind Araxxas /way 42.2 46.4 ish
Click extra action button from X'era
Go get a drink, some pizza while npc blah blah blahs
When you finally can click portal thing behind you
Turn around towards ballists... right click the s@!t out of those infernals
Go to Xaltan and more right click (make sure your mage buddies arent dead)
At 75%ish Xaltan will freeze you and drop you to 70%ish health
NEW Spell should appear on bars (even bartender)
Use it to siphon mages
then kill Xalian (you get a shield spell too use it)
go through door click new portal
keep moving use mana spells and siphon when you can
retreat if needed - otherwise push to 2nd portal and activate
then run all the way to next portal - use up mana
re-siphon for mages - get new spell - use on big portal thing in middle of room
release new dude - kill him with with spell above
go through new gate

A little more info, since I was confused: you are outside the BRH instance - but you go into your own personal instance where you get to be Illidan. There are a variety of quests to complete and your power will grow as you get them done. The portals was hardest (imo) - and the demons will respawn. So I try to run to a portal and use the first spell to get rid of them and then turn on the portal the regenerate my health before i go on to the next one. You can stand in the portal and get the stragglers, too. But don't pause too long

good for getting to higher levels of the Hold, Araxxas, and Lord Ravencrest

I usually start from the flight point at Bradensbrook, Val'sharah. Jump (north) down into the inlet and follow the inlet to the first way point. On the way there is one spot of dry terrain separating inlets, but you are in sort of a canyon anyway.

This is from water's edge of narrow inlet NW of the hold, and you end up in Ravencourt Subzone of the Darkpens Zone

I had the worst time completing this until I found a YouTube video that actually showed a 4th portal. Opening the 4th portal grants you the 3rd ability which you use to destroy Balaadur. Then the Rooksguard enter the area and you open a double door to take out the colossal siege breaker. However, before you can destroy it you have to sacrifice your mages one last time to get a 4th ability that allows you to destroy the siege breaker. Oh, how I wish someone in the voluminous comment section would have pointed that out.

I give this scenario 4 stars for story and 1 star for execution.

Soo on the first boss, i use my mages to get to the boss, get my sacrifice skill (6) then it sacrifices all of my mages, I get the jumpy thing skill (1) do do dmg, its costs 20k mana, i have 100k use it 5 times boss is nowhere near dead.

So i run back to the other mages around the portal to sacrifice them after i let myself to below 20%, boss resets.

Also resets when i go to the fountain to heal.

Sooo please explain. I might be retarded but plea help xoxo

Despite the implications of the in game speeches, the portals will only replenish Illidan's health, not his mana. The only way to get more mana is to drain the other mages.

If you're like DimmieDunce and can't bring yourself to kill any more of your allies or if you just want an interesting challenge, this is totally doable without sacrificing a single one aside from the 4 you are forced to siphon at the very beginning in order to defeat the mini-boss (which is justifiable since if Illidan hadn't done anything, they all would have died anyway). Totally just did it. It's hard, but funny and worth it my opinion. Technically it's not supposed to happen, but there are several things that you can take advantage of to allow you to do this the "right" way:

After completing the first objective, repair the second purple portal, heal yourself up, and then run all the way down into the courtyard. Don't stop, keep going until you get to another deactivated portal. Keep attacking until the acolytes teleport down to you. They will grab some threat off of you. Spam click the portal until the cast stops getting interrupted and the portal is repaired. If you die before your allies get to you, just try it again. Do the same for the other portal in the courtyard. Keep in mind that while the regular mobs will keep spawning from the Nihilam portal, the elite ones will not. So focus the mageslayers down; the rest die pretty easily. Once all the elites in the area are dead, go ahead and do the optional side quest line starting with Felspawns of Lothros if you want. It might make things easier since Jarod and Broxigar will help you if you do, though it's not necessary.
Start attacking the Nihilam. While the shield will reflect your auto attack, it actually won't reflect the NPCs' damage. So just hit it a few times to get your Moon Guard to aggro onto it, then kite all the demons over to the healing portal and tank them there. If any of the demons pull your acolytes off of the objective, focus it down and go back to your spot. However, you shouldn't have to worry too much about that, since at some point, one of the Eredar commanders will order all his minions to "kill the hero". After that line, all the demons will automatically attack you and ignore your acolytes. Continue tanking the demons on top of the healing portal until the objective has been completed.
Balaadur will then appear once the demon gateway has been destroyed. He is fairly easy to kill with simple auto attacks. Just make sure you get out of his AoE and keep kiting him around to stay out of his melee range.
Once Balaadur is dead, approach the arena where the final Infernal is. Jump down and attack it to enter combat. At this point, Ravencrest will order his forces to charge into the arena and assist you. At any point now, click the "exit vehicle" button on your action bar to leave the scenario, just make sure you do it before you die. After teleporting out, re-enter the quest area and go back into the scenario when prompted by Xe'ra. Upon reinstancing, you will have gained all abilities, 100% mana, and 30 stacks of the damage buff that is normally gained from sacrificing the Moon Guard. Go back to the arena, where you will find that Ravencrest and his people are still locked in combat with the Infernal. This time instead of charging in and re-aggroing the boss, just find a spot as far away from the big bad as possible and drop down, then right click it to start auto attacking. Keep attacking in this way until the Infernal is dead. You might even use some of the special abilities if you want to try to get him down faster, though he should go down fairly quickly with the 1500% DPS increase from the buff. I'm not sure if it'll aggro the boss or not, but if it does just exit vehicle again and return.
Win, and enjoy the irony of the dialogue at the end. Ravencrest berates Illidan for supposedly killing all the Moon Guard acolytes, even though they are actually in fact just all standing there nice and peachy just as in DimmieDunce's screenshot. Illidan argues that he had no choice, but Ravencrest says there's always a choice...and indeed there is as we in fact just bore witness to... ;)

After leaving the completed scenario, Xe'ra asks what you would have done differently, and you think, 'Come on Xe'ra didn't you just see what I did differently?'

Blizzard, please make it possible for the same character to go back and view/run all Illidan memories again if we want to after completing them once, and also an achievement for completing this without sacrificing any more than 4 Moon Guard acolytes, and hopefully create clever ways to do it without having to exploit bugs. I think a title reward or something would be well-suited to this sort of thing. :)

FYI for Dominos (and possibly other action bar addons) users, you may need to enable blizzard's vehicle override action bar. The Arcane Siphon ability didn't show up on my bars without it.

Freakin' awesome quest/scenario! Could really get into the fury and seemingly impossible choices set before the guy. Certainly Illidan felt the needs (lives) of the many outweigh the needs of the few; better to save the day than regret for the rest of his life that he didn't.

Couldn't help but finish this with a (probably evil looking) grin on my face.

And I really, really like Xe'ras last words about understanding Illidan's perspective. What would you have done differently?

I play an especially squishy mage so minimizing the number of deaths that it takes to get through some MOB infested area is always foremost in my mind. Having done the quests at Bradensbrook and outside the instance of Black Rook Hold I was a little familiar with the lay out.

When arriving at Block Rook Hold one can bypass the ghost MOBs in the graveyard, go up the central stairs (curved, douple stairway) onto a wide, flat wall with some glaives deployed facing the interior. Carefully look around and go down to the bottom of the single staircase in front of you. At the bottom don't venture too far from the stairs. On a long diagonal to your right there are three archways. You need to get to the farthest one to the right of the area enclosed by iron fretwork. If you go invisible you can reach that archway without aggroing any of the MOBs in the courtyard.

Go into the archway to your right and up the stairs. Turn left at the landing and continue up to the area where you will do this quest and its following Scenario. On your right on the way to Araxxas there are 3 guards. One is close to the stairs from which you emerge and two more flank a door very near Araxxas. they tend to blend into the scenery so knowing that they are there may avoid another pointless death. It's not terribly hard to pull and kill them one at a time. Araxxas too is not especially hard to kill though, as others have observed, killing him is not absolutely necessary.

Xe'ra (whose name sounds like she once was the woman who supervised the photocopier) will speak to you just inside or outside the iron fretwork in front of which Araxxas stands. Clicking the special action button initiates all that follows.

I have to say that the mechanics of this quest are not terribly obvious. Blizzard has not afforded players many of the helps we've gotten used to in questing so read the other comments most of which are more astute than mine. Mostly I just wanted to save a mage or two some repair bills.

You open the first portal which seems to give you as many moon guard as you need so you can fight through the legion to get more moon guard (which don't seem to need)?

Then, in the final encounter, you are told you have to call on your moon guard one more time. But you have to fight him with nothing working for a while and sacrificing the moon guard button doesn't work?

An interesting story marred by having to do a confusing quest in the middle of it.

I have all the abilities on my bar, and get all the way to "When Good Man Do Nothing" but the Colossal Siegebreaker is not in Raven's Glory (or... anywhere that I can find). I've tried reloading, disabling addons, logging in and out, dropping quest and nothing makes it show up.

What am I missing?

This quest is a flashback, telling about Illidan's past. Reach Bradensbrook, there is a path to Black Rook Hold starts at 38.6 57.5 spot, follow the road up to a hill, there will be an entrance to Hold in 39.5 53.2. As you just entered, turn right and run up the stairs. then turn left and follow the way around Hold to the spot, where Araxxas stays. There Xe'ra will contact with you and a scenario will start.

I was not able to see the action button to drain mana and get past the first obstacle until I disabled the ct_mod addon's BottomBar and BarMod items, then everything worked as intended.

This is a huge exercise in frustration. I don't get any special action bars, despite disabling everything. The minute scenario starts, my first action bar disappears, right click does not function, and the mages do not assist. Completely baffled.

I loved this quest and the others related to Illidan backstory.
While doing this quest I had some trouble that seemed to be caused by the action bars addon, in my case, Dominos, but seems others like bartender used to cause the problem too. Recent updates on those addons seem to have fixed the issue.

Don't get too far away from your mages, you won't be able to siphon them. The range is not unlimited.

It doesn't appear to be mentioned here -- but each time you drain your mages, you get a damage multiplier applied, up to a cap of 30x.

At the max, Ilidan can osk all of the lesser demons, which makes the scenario quite a bit easier. UNLIMITED POWER!

Pre-req appears to be level 2 Artifact Research.
In this scenario, you will be Illidan Stormrage.

To start, you will only have auto-attack (right-click).
Spells will be added to your action bar as you progress through the scenario.
Note - a lot of people are having trouble seeing the abilities you'll get as you progress through this scenario due to incompatibilities with various addons (typically action bar addons). If you don't see buttons when the instructions say you should see buttons, it's likely an addon issue.
Exiting the vehicle will cancel the scenario and you will start over (if you were only gone for a short time, there are "save points" in the scenario that you will start at instead).

The scenario is started in the uninstanced (non-dungeon) area of Black Rook Hold by approaching the alcove behind Araxxas. Two ways to get there...

By Land (main): take the flightpath for Garden of the Moon, mount up, and follow the road north then west. After the bridge there is a long red rug, at the end of the red rug there will be an opening on the right - take that and run all the way back.
By Sea (side): take the flightpath for Bradensbrook, mount up (water walking preferred), and head left down the river until you see a pathway up onto the island (/way 38.59 57.53). Follow the dirt path upwards until you see stairs on the right. Go up, go straight up the next stairs, go right when the path comes to a +, up the stairs, then left. You'll go (*gasp*) up more stairs, through two archways, and run all the way back.

The main entrance will have some elites to run by, and the back way will occasionally be the focal point for a PvP World Quest.

Call to Xe'ra (extra action button) to start the scenario.

Report to Kur'talos Ravencrest - observe RP.
Repair the Deactivated Moon Guard Portal - after some RP there will be a base behind "Illidan" (you) that you can interact with.
Illidan: "Excellent! The power radiating from the portal will energize me so long as I remain nearby. I must remember to return to these portals whenever I am fatigued." (will restore health only, not mana)
Secure the rampart by defeating Xalian Felblaze - If you time it right you can bypass the Infernal Siegebreakers and run straight to Xalian Felblaze (44.30, 49.55). - Remember auto-attack via right-click. Optional: dodge Fel Flamestrike. - Continue until Xalian is around 75% health at which point you will be stunned (literally and figuratively) for more RP. - You will be introduced to your first spell - Arcane Siphon (action bar: 6) - which you must use on the surrounding mages (RIP). - After their sacrifice, you will gain access to Stormrage (action bar: 1). Spamming 1 will end your fight with Xalian more quickly, but she can die to auto-attacks just as well if you're worried about mana (which won't really be an issue because you will get more mages).
Enter the upper ramparts of the courtyard - run through the archways (2) behind where you first encountered Xalian, there will be another inactive portal base on the left through the second archway.
Activate the remaining Moon Guard portals (3) - The portal bases will spawn and are visible on your map. You need to reactivate these like you did with the first portal at the start of the scenario, fighting enemies along the way. - Your next mage sacrifice will grant Warhawk (action bar: 2). I tended to run through a lot of enemies at once before using my mana spells, but move at your own pace. If you run out of mages, don't forget your auto-attack. If you get low on health, don't forget that approaching an active portal will heal you. Portals: 1. The one you approached to start this phase of the scenario (44.53, 51.23). 2. Head straight > down >right > straight (40.98, 51.45). 3. Head back to the + and go east (should be left if the 2nd portal is behind you) through the wedge to the furthest corner (43.71, 50.91).	<- At this point, a side quest chain (optional) will become available from Captain Jarod Shadowsong. He will be to the west, outside the courtyard near the entrance to a crypt. /way 38.80, 53.07 These can only be completed/turn in while you're doing the larger quest/scenario. 1. Felspawns of Lothros - Lothros is inside the crypt. 2. The Red Axe - head out of the crypt and to the right/north to the portal in the graveyard (38.91, 51.42) and then right to the top of the stairs on the near (40.61, 50.94) and far (41.33, 49.78) sides. Turn in across the bridge (43.85, 50.33). 3. Hunter of Night - Egads! Behind you! Malvingeroth will be cut-scened into action, use your kit to kick his Pit Lord tail.
Destroy the Nihilam Portal and slay Balaadur to end the invasion - As you enter this phase, you'll gain access to another ability: Fury of the Cosmos (action bar: 3). Some people said they had to sacrifice mages to get this ability, but I just waited a few seconds after activating portal #3 and it popped onto my action bar. - Approach the giant blob of green fel in the middle of the courtyard and use your new-fangled Fury of the Cosmos to destroy the portal. - Balaadur will become active. If you don't have the mana for Fury of the Cosmos, siphon your mages. Warhawk is useful to dodge AoE.
Enter Raven's Glory and destroy the Colossal Siegebreaker - approach the heavy door and it will unlock/open (42.88, 50.92 - to the left of the 3rd portal you activated). Run through the door and jump down to the arena. As you proceed through the fight, you'll gain access to your final ability Collapsing Star (action bar: 4). Use it ASAP.
Final bout of RP (bitterness intensifies) before being teleported out of the scenario.
Turn quest in at your Class Hall.

After turning in this quest and reaching Artifact Knowledge 5, I was offered In My Father's House.

Well, by now it's becoming obvious to the meanest intelligence (meaning mine) that Illidan will (1) save us from the Legion yet again and (2) in so doing will become so irredeemably evil that we have to kill him as the final boss of the expansion.

At stage 2 of Black Rook Hold Scenario: Ravencrest's Legacy you will have to wait quite a while for the deactivated portal to be clickable. It seems like the RP talking should end and you will have to wait up to 2 min afterwards.

If it happens to be bugged at stage 6, and you can't burn down the barrier or you happens to die a lot and don't know what to do next, type /reload and you might get some more abilities, where button # 3, is Fury of the Cosmos. You will then be able to get the stage done quite fast.
You will most likely have to /reload a couple of times while on this quest for it to work out right.
I tried over and over for about 45 minutes straight to figure this out.. Apparently Blizzard haven't realized this bug yet.

At the final stage (7), just before you jump into the arena to fight Colossal Siegebreaker, make sure to use /reload again to get the fourth and last ability called Collapsing Star. (The ability is not yet listed on wowhead).

Don't worry about the <immune> to damage. You will get a 4th ability which will kill him.

The maximum amount of stacks you can get of Essence of the Arcane is 30, which is 1500 % increased damage dealt.

It's quite easy once you understand it.

1. Click portals (takes a couple seconds to activate)
2. Right click (auto attack) demons as needed.
3. Spam 1,2,3 as they become available. Do this to SPEND your mana.
4. When your mana is low, you can use button 6 to drain your mages (and heal you to full HP/MP). Use this ability every time it is available - it makes you stronger as well.

Once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy.

For those wonder why nothing is on your action bars: At first, all you have is right click auto attack. Then, as the scenario progresses, you get more abilities.

I got through the whole scenario until the Colossal. It wasn't there. I left the scenario and came back. I reset my UI. Nothing. No Colossal.

For killing Xalian Felblaze, you need to have a pack of friendly "Moon Guard Acolyte" following you around. The only way to beat her is to cast Arcane Siphon on those acolytes once the boss gets low enough on health. This will (after about 20 seconds) give you a new spell that you can use to kill Xalian.

The first time I tried this, there only Moon Guard Acolytes were near the portal and did not follow me down to where Xalian is. Also, Xalian resets if you try and kite her to the acolytes.

I had to abort the scenario and start over to make the Moon Guard Acolytes follow.

Be careful! While doing the quest and fighting the first elite, do NOT walk back towards your camp. I did it, expecting the NPCs to help me, instead it broke the fight as I needed to kill my allies, but there were none left. Had to leave the scenario and restart it and listen to the entire intro again.

I have just abandoned this quest. Not because it is particularly flawed, though it is a bit convoluted and with no clear instructions as to how to proceed.

But no! I abandoned it because the location makes one liable to PVP. I do not like PVP, I do not enjoy PVP! And there is one thing more annoying than PVP, that is PVP against my will!

I finally went back to the graveyard after being killed in the "arena" for the fifth time trying to figure out this quest. I called for a flight back to the local flight master, only to be killed there by $%^&*!@ jerkwad PVP'ers when I was only trying to get out of the area!

If you want people do do your quests, make them safe from the PVP jerks who play this game!

WoW has lasted so long because it has so many options for play. Those who enjoy PVP should do so, but I should not be forced to do something that I DO NOT ENJOY!

Fix this or I won't be finishing this quest line!

Tukui users: seemed the only way I could get the spells to show up was to touch the empty hotbar spot where they were supposed to be. After touching the empty spot, they would suddently become visible and usable. The first spell shows up in the 6th spot, after that you get a new spell every time you sacrifice a mage (must be at 20% mana before you can use the ability), but again you have to touch empty spots to find the new spells..

To those having issues after searching and having issues my self. It appears to be one of the following,

1. Disable addons if you arent seeing any of the spells on the vehicle bar.

2. Right click to attack. If you are having issues where you run out of mana on the first boss after opening the first portal before the boss dies, be sure you are right clicking the boss to attack, then by the time you sacrifice the mages you will have damaged the boss enough that the strikes will kill the boss.

Playing a Druid I was coming from The Dreamgrove so decided to reach the quest area from coord 44.5 42.4; there is a steep path to follow and don't hesitate to smash your jump key to reach the last coordinate

From the rocks you will be on the edge of the Black Rook Hold ramparts and from there you just follow the wall to the right to reach the quest starting point. Araxxas will not detect you.

Before coming back last month I played this game without interruption from 2007 until last year, and this is easily the most broken, bugged, stupid thing I've ever seen in this game. NOTHING about it is intuitive. NO clues are given as to what to do. "Stay near the portals"? That's it? Once upon a time they actually made sure major quest chains worked, especially if character advancement was dependent on them. But this? This is absolutely pathetic. Kudos to those of you with the endless free time required to trial-and-error your way through this thing. The rest of us that they've grown fat off of for the last decade who now have families and mortgages and are lucky if we get to play ten hours a week? We never stood a chance.

Just a tip for any first timers having the issue I did, if you don't seem to have any moon guard running around with you (you need them once the first mini boss almost kills you to sacrifice.) Leave the scenario and come back in. They immediately spawned when I did this and it all made sense.

If you have to afk while in this scenario because real life > WoW, you will return to the game and find you have been teleported to the portal room of Dalaran and must travel back to Blackrook Hold and start the entire memory over.

Do not kite anything in this scenario, the first boss needs mages around you, if she resets, you lose your mages and nothing to siphon power from therefore you'll be stuck.

I wish it were a cutscene so I could just skip instead of being subject to Blizz's clumsy attempt to "justify" Illidan being an utter coward.

What's a hero? What's heroic? Personal sacrifice. Risking yourself for others.

He's not making a "hard choice" at all. Illidan is choosing to survive at the cost of the lives of others. He's a grade-a blue falcon with Blizz demanding I push the buttons to murder the mages myself so I'm just as dirty.

And all the while the frikkin' Mother of Angels hypes him up as the chosen savior.

I hope whomever wrote and approved this scenario dies in utter agony. I wish them profound suffering.

Some things to observe while in this scenario: Rhonin and Korialstrasz roaming the skyes fighting demons, and don't forget to pick Felspawns of Lothros from Jarod Shadowsong! It leads to meeting Broxigar, and you won't be able to pick it once you finish the quest.

Also it seems you can jump off the outer walls, and explore the borders of the instance. You will automatically "leave" Illidan, but stay in the map.

You can lure the Colossal Siegebreaker up to one of the health giving portals. There are stairs to the right.
Jarod Shadowsong and his friend turn out to be helpful if you do this.. Killing the Siegebreaker can take some time. So make sure you do that quest before starting this fight.
You get the same ending if you do this.

If you HAVE NO SPELLS ON YOUR SPECIAL ACTION BAR: First, I perused the fan sites, and did not find any solution. I put in a ticket, and was told it's an add-on conflict, and maybe it is, but no matter what I did, I was unable to fix the problem by moving and renaming folders, uninstalling all my add-ons, etc.

Here is the solution. I did watch a youtube of Ravencrest's Legacy, so at least I knew how it was supposed to go. You should be aware that, initially, you aren't supposed to have any spells on that bar. For the first bit, you just RIGHT CLICK on the mobs, and Illidan will raise his staff and shoot. Up until you fight the big draenei demon lady (sorry I'm not great with names, but you will know who I mean if you watch the video) this is the method. Then, when you fight her and are first supposed to suck the life out of your Moonguard to sustain you (your first spell, sorry if this is a spoiler for anyone) there will be a very obvious signaling banner when the new spell arrives, and when you should use it. The spells still did not appear on my bar, so in desperation, I just started monkey-typing on my keyboard! It worked! I guess they are connected to my keys, but they just don't show on the action bar. The spells somehow activated. Soon in, maybe 2nd or 3rd, you get an AoE spell, which activates a green "targeting" circle, which makes you jump into the crowd of demons and they all die. Monkey-type until the green targeting circle appears, and then apply it where you need it. The whole rest was still monkey-typing. :) I don't recommend doing this without watching the video, it will help you to know what is supposed to happen and where exactly you need to go. I watched the one posted by Levonel, called "Ravencrest's Legacy ! SCENARIO ! Order Hall QUEST ! - World of Warcraft" I didn't compare it to others, but it was quite good for my purposes. Good luck, folks!

There is a side quest series that you can ONLY do while doing this scenario. While you are on the part opening the three moon guard portals, you will see Jarod Shadowsong on the south side near the back entrance of Black Rook Hold. As Illidan you can do this three part quest:

Part 1: Felpawns of Lothros
Part 2: The Red Axe
Part 3: Hunter of Night

Awards an iLevel 825 item (sometimes upgraded to 840).

This scenario is so long, clunky, buggy and ill-tested that these flaws completely overshadow the cool lore going on. I absolutely DREAD doing this one on my alts, every time. It feels like it is being ham fisted down my throat.

I still had problems with this quest as I tried to complete it.
The scenario wouldn't move past the moment you get control of Illidan in the 1st stage.
I could move around but was stuck within the confined area, gate wouldn't open and the portal at the back i could not interact with.
Relogging, restarting the scenario, reloading UI or disabling addons had no effect.

After opening a ticket and talking to a GM, I found a semi-solution in the comments here,and proceeded to try that one out with another GM

The Semi-solutionwas the following:

"vyoletkyss on 2016/09/16 (Patch 7.0.3)
Its not bugged its an issue with the scenario and add-ons. Make sure you have no add-ons active. I had to put my WTF and addons folder into my recycle bin and then run the game in order for the scenario to start and to be able to interact with it."

This solution actually worked for me and made me play the scenario as intended.

Solution:
- Abandon the quest
- Quit the game
- Go to your Wow folder
- Copy your "Interface", "WTF" and "Cache" folder to a safe location and remove the original folders from the WoW folder.
- Restart the game
- Accept the quest in your order hall and do the scenario again.
- The scenario should be working as intended now.
- Return your addons to your wow folder when you are finished

I also asked the GM to bring this quest under the attention of the developers, so that this solution won't be necessary in the future.

One of my favourite references in Wow comes when the stage name changes to "No Man an Island," after Illidan begins to leech off the Moonguard for energy.
It's a reference to John Donne's Devotions upon Emergent Occasions: "Meditation XVII":

This really needs an 'I've already seen this long, drawn out and boring quest, can I please skip it' button... Yap, yap, yap, illidan is so cool, blah blah, stand around for a while before you can do anything, talk talk talk, ilka tuk tak will you SHUT UP ALREADY and let me play?

It's basically a recolor of the Caverns of Time Stratholme with Arthas, but that was entertaining and let you actually play the game, instead of having time to go get a sandwich while whoever wrote this Illidan fix-fic spanks it to how cool he is.

Encountered a major bug which makes it impossible to finish - at the end the very last object (colossal siegebreaker) just doesn't exist. I ran around the castle, all levels, every room, every corner to find where am I supposed to go; even went outside of the scenario area and got ported into empty version of Val'sharah. Then returned back inside, didn't work. Left the scenario and entered again (talk to Xe'Ra when ready) and got the same result again! The arena is just emtpy!
How the hell is &*!@ like this even possible? How on planet can main object of a quest just not exist in a scenario?

I got all the way through to the final boss and it glitched out, threw me "up in the air" then the game disconnected. When I logged back in I was standing where the scenario dumps you out with it not completed, and no means of reentering the scenario except to go back to my class hall, abandon the quest then re-take it.

REALLY annoying to have to redo the whole scenario, but if you encounter that situation it's the only thing I could do to make it work.

Anyone else notice that, after Illidan restores the first portal, he say, "I'll have to remember to come back here when I am fatigued." And yet, being next to a moon portal does nothing to refresh him. He doesn't even comment on that lack when I had him standing next to one. This makes no sense, story wise... assuming we're supposed to be looking at him sympathetically. :/

If you try to just run through the demon army, he says, "I need to find a portal to rest at, or siphon more of my mages". Runnign back to the portal means you can stand there and not take a lot of damage, but doesn't refresh his mana.

Problem defeating Nihilam Portal?

If you came here looking for information on how to defeat this portal while working on Ravencrest's Legacy, I am guesssing you may have been having a problem similar to mine...

In order to defeat the portal you need to use the special ability Fury of the Cosmos which only becomes available after you have energized THREE of the purple portals.

See the excellent comment by on the page for Ravencrest's Legacy. It is basically a full GUIDE to completing the quest. Please UPVOTE her comment.

My problem was a result of NOT knowing what the Scenario Goals were (only had energized two portals). I fixed that issue by disabling the Sorha Quest Log addon during the scenario.

EDIT: a BETTER approch is to use Sorha Quest Log addon correctly... I repositioned the Scenario Tracker minion so that I could see the scenario goals and completion as I was doing the scenario.

If you start the scenario, and find yourself unable to drain your mages because the button isn't showing up, just click the 'Exit Vehicle' button. You will be ported back to just OUTSIDE the scenario. Log out, disable your addons (for me, disabling CT Mod did the trick), then log back in. Move a few feet, and the scenario will start again. You should now see the spells on Illidan's action bar. BTW, if, like me, this took more than a few tries to accomplish, logging out at that point isn't a bad idea, as it saves fighting your way back in again.

Okay, so I was stuck on this quest for a while because I did not know how to progress the first fight. If you just want to the solution check TLDR below

Read through the comments here and most people are frustrated with the quest. But after some testing and watching a youtube video of the scenario I would like to bring forth the argument that the confusion and frustration with the quest actually comes from not understanding the design and idea behind it. Bear with me for a second here, I have my reasons, and in hindsight I belive the scenario is actually quite brilliant:

The sceario is designed to put you into Illidan's shoes. Basically to get his perspective, what really happened, why he went full deamon, his feelings and thought pattern. He faced an overwhelming threat and was meant to protect his people, but he could not. To make you feel empathy for him and understand his situation, the easiest way to do this, is to put you as a player into a situation that "feels" hopeless and neverending. This is contrary to the usual quest design, where as players we are the hero, most NPCs we kill simply fall over after 3-4 hits. But in this quest, you have to fight, you see your life getting drained, you feel the pressure, there are not many spells you can use in the beginning. On the very first boss Xalian, it feels like it's impossible to progress and every auto attack you deal is doing minimal damage (right click, actually that was my very first mistake, not rightclicking on my first run and it didn't go anywhere for me ^^). Then you get the option to sacrifice your own comrades, but it still takes while to get Xalian down to ~60% it still feels hopeless. Then we get the Stormrage spell. it empowers us to buff our attacks and gives us a glimpse of hope, we could win this, but at what cost? We already sacrificed our own people to get this far, but the battle is still raging on. Moving forward you have to commit to the battle, we commit by using all means nessecary to win this and we sacrifice even more and get stronger in the process.

By the way for anyone getting stuck at the clicking/door/before the first boss: Since the scenario is heavily scripted, deactiveate ALL addons, they will prevent you from progressing.

TLDR:

Guide on how to go about this quest and progress beyond the first boss:

Click portal (lots of waiting and role playing talk)
Kill Deamons with auto attack (right click)
Engage the Boss Xalian with auto attack (right click)
Fight until ~80% you will get the Sacrifice Spell
Sacrifice your fellow elves
Keep fighting until Xalian is down to ~60% you will get the Jump Spell
Jump once, but then keep using the right click attack, it will get buffed
The fight is rather long, don't worry, just keep attacking. If you do it wrong and miss all your jumps, you can still finish the fight just with the auto attack, but it will take a while

Okay so this quest is more confusing that it needs to be, so here's a brief of what you should do to get through it with the least amount of hair-pulling:

First, exit the scenario. If you are reading this, you probably ran in, got your mages killed, and are wondering how you are supposed to defeat the first boss alone. For some reason the mages don't respawn (at least at this point as of 7.3) yet so you pretty much have to "exit the vehicle" then walk around a bit until the Narru enters your head again.

Now, with fresh mages, go fight the boss until the cut-scene (you will still be taking damage) then hit the scarifice button so you can end her. From this point it's reasonably straight-forward - with one exception. You will see a "!" nearby. This is apparently a "side" quest chain, but it' well worth doing, as you will be rewarded with two lackies to help in your fights rather than just the pitifully inept Moonguard.

This chain starts with Felspawn of Lothros moves on to The Red Axe and finishes with Hunter of Night. After the first quest, Captain Jarod Shadowsong will join you to reach Broxigar the Red who ill join you at the end of the chain.

This would probably have made the second part a lot easier, if Id known about but at the time, but whatever. For this you run about opening new portals, blow up a demon portal with a new spell you only get from making more sacrifices, then kill off a boss.

Finally, jump in the pit and kill off the big monstrosity with a spell of ultimate doom.

Doing this scenario right now on a fourth toon and having to /reload a gazillion times or re-logging also what felt as, as many times is ridiculous. I do not remember it to be that bad before 7.3. Someone here on wowhead mentioned to disable some or all of your addons, so I went and disabled Elvui which didn't help. Enable that and disabled 4-5 others (all different) which didn't do a thing either. So I thought what the heck - disable all... which still didn't work.. argh!
So here's what triggered it for me so I could get on with this scenario:

Logged out, disabled all addons - clicked OK
Enabled all addons - clicked OK
Started turning them on/off per character and clicking OK after each toon

(where I both double and triple checked BEFORE I logged back in).
That did the trick for me.
It may sound like a hassle to do all that just to get the scenario going, but when you have no other option and the quest isn't exactly optional to complete, then what else do you do... /just saying.

Waiting around for Blizzard to fix it, is a long shot. Despite them having a million things to do, not fixing one of those scenarios you have to complete to go further is just mind boggling. But then again, you'd think I'd be used to it after 11 years of wow.

Make sure if you have a add on for spells you disable it. I did this over and over and couldn't get spells for quest until I disabled my spell addon.

By far.... the worst (and believe me, ate enough crow from quests and such). Stupid, buggy, long, crappy and tiring. Maybe Blizz could have spared us from doing that &*!@ty chain from Xe'ra if we made it with another char. But seems they enjoy and get delight with that...

Jeebus this quest is a PITA. After a minute solid of talking, you can move your character. But you can't do anything yet because there is more talking. Then ONE THING unlocks, which you can click, then there's another good minute of talking. The door unlocks, and you can progress, but each phase of this quest goes pretty much like this. The abilities you get aren't really powerful, meaning you have to slap ineffectually at the enemies until it's time to kill your men again to boost. You run out of mana ridiculously fast. You'll likely have to run back to a moon guard portal to recoup.You're going to have to rinse and repeat this like 7-12 times, and yes, it's going to be annoying every time. Also, nothing about what you're supposed to do is really all that clear. Unfortunately, I've now done this like 8 times on my alts.

If you are using CT Mod to control your action bars - even the newest version for Legion 7.3.5 - you must totally disable the addon in order for spells to appear on your bar during this scenario. Just disable it before entering the scenario, and all will work as planned.

You'll start with no abilities. Use right-click to auto-attack until Illidan talks about sacrificing his moon guard. Doing this will grant you new abilities throughout the scenario and will allow you to move on to the next phase, but also use it whenever you're running low on health or mana.

Next find the moon guard portals and activate them. This is very annoying to do because the demons keep coming at you. The only way I found to do this was to pause and let your moon guard allies get aggro while you channel the portal.

After the portals are up, use sacrifice to gain Fury of the Cosmos and destroy the large portal and kill that boss. Then do the same thing again in the arena next door to complete the scenario.

Save yourself some grief and just turn off ALL addons before accepting the quest. You only need the scenario UI to complete it, and as long as you hug the rail on the left, & skirt around Araxxas you will never be in combat.

This is a terrible quest. If you have to do it
- taking down the fence on the left side to get to the ramparts is slow, You have to try cursoring the glowing object several times before it lets you pas
- schedule a few uninterupted hours to do this one. If you are afk, you start over.
- It may seem like you are not making any progress. If you keep killing mobs and moving forward with your cadre, you are making progress.
- Initially, you use the right button on your mouse to auto attack. Initially, that is your only weapon. As you get more weapons you have to use those.
-Initially, you regain health by returning to the portal. You will have to fight your way back. After you have the replenshment button, you regain mana by clicking on the health button on your weapons bar on the right .
- The first portal is just past the boss (forget the name) by the first turret. The second one is in the courtyard, and should be visible as you climb down the stairs to the courtyard from the rampart. The third portal is a little harder to find, it is in back of the green orb.
- After those three, take on the boss in the green orb. Then go through the door by the second portal for the final boss.

Overall, Initially keep going back to the portals for energy. Then press the replenishment button when you are running low on mana from using your weapons. Keep going forward as you eliminate mobs.

I didn't think it was possible, but this actually EVEN WORSE than the "Bringer of the Light" scenario. This is genuinely the worst quest/scenario in the entire game; like, this is some Vanilla ^&*!. I've done this quest on 5+ alts and still have no idea wtf I'm doing. After not playing for a few months, I'm sitting here with a level 110 Druid with 2/3 "Activated Moonstones" and, not only is Illidan out of resources, and barely alive, but there are zero "Moonstones" or "Acolytes" to abuse. Combine that with infinitely spawning useless adds, and you've got yourself a garbage scenario. This is my third attempt this hour, the first two bugged out when Ravencrest decided to never open the gate (left scenario), and the second time literally no enemies spawned, at all.. (I decided to hearth and fly back)

Third time's the char-errr Fourth time's the ch-- oh. Maybe some day! My druid would love to have more than 2 Order Hall champions.

Just a word of warning, you will NEED to rename your Cache, WTF and Interface folders for your addons before logging into the game to do this quest. It's heavily scripted, and many addons will break the scenario for you if you do not.

I had serious problems completing this quest after the pre-patch for BfA. Here's what I noticed during my struggle:

Disable all addons. (But I didn't find it necessary to change folders.)
EXIT when your mana doesn't get replenished or the necessary buttons don't appear on your action bar. If you enter the scenario again right away, your mana should be refilled and the buttons should appear. (Rinse and repeat at need.)
For the second of the three portals, run through the mobs on the ramparts and jump from the stairs down to the terrace near the tree. Stay right to the edge of the terrace when running toward the second portal. Use button #1 to buy you time until the Moonguard arrive. For the third portal, jump down to the terrace near the tree, then down into the courtyard.
Use #3 to break the Nihilam portal.
Once you jump into the arena for the final part, do not Exit before you have successfully used #6 and siphoned life from your Moonguard. If you've successfully siphoned and the bloody button #4 still doesn't appear, you can Exit, and upon entering the scenario again, chances are that the button will be there. (At least it was for me. But I had to restart the scenario once from scratch because if you don't manage to siphon, the Moonguards won't show up again. At least they didn't for me.)

Honestly, I was ready to throw my laptop out of the window, but I guess with lots of Exiting and patience, this is not so bad if you know it can be done.

And it can be done. If you don't throw your laptop out of the window, that is.

I was finally able to complete this quest just now after restarting it over and over about 15 times. As has been mentioned, when I'd use the escape vehicle option, I'd be ported back out to go through the Xera rp. Each time I entered, I encountered different problems, but I managed to get past the first two bosses and activate all the portals during the second to the last attempt. The next to the last time I exited the vehicle, reentered, and jumped down into the arena, I attacked the Colossal Siegebreaker with all three abilities until my mana ran out. Then I used button six to siphon the Moon Guard. As others have stated, the Moon Guard didn't die. Unfortunately, after siphoning them several times, the action no longer restored my life, and when it got low enough to know I was going to die, I exited the vehicle and went back in the last time. I came back in with full mana and health; however, the mana reserve was only around 4600 which wasn't enough for the any of the three abilites I had. I never got the big ability which would kill the Siegebreaker. I went ahead and jumped into the arena. The Siegebreaker was attacking Kur'talos, so I stood to the side of the Siegebreaker, right clicked, and auto attacked as the Siegebreaker stayed on Kur'talos (who never went below 1 hp and all of the Siegebreaker's attacks were directed at him). It took a good five minutes for the Siegebreaker to be destroyed. The scenario finished, and I got credit for the quest. I hope this helps others finish this during this bug-finding phase of the prepatch.

This scenario is glitchy, on top of that, is vague about what you're to do. I can't get by the second gate. Sometimes I have two action buttons aaaand sometimes one. I turned off all my addons. Im so very frustrated.

so since this quest is bugged.
fallow the steps that everyone told you already (jumpin down the steps, run to the portal activate them...etc.)
now for the final boss just go to the heros rest and do the side quest to the end so you get another "gaurdian". afterwards fail the mission or restart till you are at ur 1500% dmg done plus. go to the boss pull it but run the stairs up and jump down. the boss gets bugged and stays go out and come inside and do this until you see the boss is fighting the mother ooking Ravencrest himself and the HP is getting lower. go and auto attack him (dont use any spell if u dont have the number 4 spell cause he is immune to it). the whole point is that the boss gets enough aggro from your "Gaurdians" and they will kill him and wont die cause of some spell that heals them for melee attack.

In bfa Pre-Patch: Kite & Kill Last Boss: The 4th button never appeared for me. Not after siphoning. Not after reloading. Not after exiting vehicle and re-entering. Not after dropping and restarting quest from the Class Order Hall.

Finally, I kited him up the stairs (located at the back of the alcove) and out into the courtyard where I stood on the 3rd moonwell. This constantly healed me and I was able to SLOWLY kill him using the 3rd button (only requires 10k mana) and with the assistance of my mage minions. I repeat... it was slow, but it did successfully complete the scenario.

Protip: After you have activated the 1st moonwell, exit and re-enter scenario until you proc a mana pool between 80-100K mana. It was different every time for me. Obviously, 20% of 100k is better than 20% of 60k.

Super bugged after BFA prepatch. I've "exited vehicle" 6 times, restarted 3 times and finally got it to work. In my case the portal for the second boss was already gone, without him aggro'ing me or being able to be attacked. Frustrating, but after much trial and error I got it to work!

It would appear that they fixed it in this last patch. The acolytes would die when siphoned, mana regenerated to full. Abilities showed up when they were supposed to. Glad they fixed it. I still had a few toons to finish up.

On the Final Boss Colossal Siegebreaker, keep using your 1st, 2nd and 3rd abilities (even though it says Immune, keep using them) until you can sacrifice the mages to get more mana. You will be given a 4th ability that kills him instantly.

Hi, most advice below is very good and helped me enormously, ty all. Once you are in at the first portal and have your buttons, open the first gate, run along ramparts and kill the first mage, duck through the door behind her and get the second portal to left just on other side of small corridor working. You will attract mobs as you run further along the ramparts, you can run back to the second portal and just standing in it will kill them, a little slowly, but you won't die. Keep your mages up and run down stairs, just kill enough mobs to get to the second portal (yes stay right) and activate it. I let a heap of mobs run after me before killing them in bunches. Mobs will keep you from activating portals, so keep enough power to kill a bunch at the portal sites. You may be transported back a couple of times to the original portal, but keep up the running strategy. The third is straight ahead from bottom of stairs (assuming you're running the length of the ramparts again). Kill mobs enough to let you activate. Killing your mages gives you your powers (buttons) back, so stand around in portal until you get mages back too. After that two big bosses and take advice as mentioned from others. All doable, just be prepared to have a few runs at it.

Completed this quest on 11/22/2019 (Patch 8.2). Here is a step-by-step of what to do in case it is too vague or confusing.

Firstly, be aware there's a lot of talking. If you don't know what to do, wait for any dialogue to be over first and that may help.

1. There's a "Deactivated Portal" behind you when you first take control of Illidan. Listen to all the dialogue and then click on the portal to repair it.
2. Walk to the portcullis, which will say it is locked. Illidan will tell Ravencrest to unlock it and you will be able to move forward.
3. Ahead of you is a hostile NPC named Xalian Felblaze. You don't have any abilities yet; auto-attack her (your followers will do so as well) and wait.
4. Eventually you will get an ability on your bar that will kill your followers. Use it. More abilities should appear on the bar; use those to defeat the mob.
5. You will be told to activate more of the portals like in Step 1. You will have to look around for them and there are A LOT of mobs to wade through. When Illidan runs out of mana, use the Siphon ability again. It takes a few seconds before it restores your mana.
6. There will be a big, obvious Legion portal. You'll be told to sacrifice more followers to destroy it. Just murder everything until it's only you and the boss (Balaadur) left. Kill him.
7. There should be another locked door nearby. Approach it and it should open for you. Next you will have to jump into the Raven's Glory arena to fight the boss Colossal Siegebreaker (a huge infernal, very hard to miss). It is immune to all your abilities, but use them anyway to deplete Illidan's mana until Arcane Siphon becomes available. Then use it and wait a few seconds.
8. You will get one last ability called Collapsing Star. Use this, and (again) wait. It will put a debuff on the boss and when the debuff runs out the boss will collapse and die. Then once the dialogue is over, you are done.

This quest is bugged as of this morning - I got to the last part - the Colossal and it is not there - I tried leaving the quest vehicle and re-entering the grounds but still not there - I have also disabled all my addons but has not changed anything - waiting Blizz to get back to me as could not find a solution on here.

I LOVED this quest! Such a great insight into Illidan and the fact that I didn't want to use mana siphon ability because I knew it would kill people brought it home even more. I really enjoyed it and it wasn't bugged for me.

I first tried this quest on my demon hunter when she was at the right level (whatever that was). Now she's 122 and she still can't do it. I've just wasted over an hour on this and can't do it. I'd like to do it on just one alt to see what it's about but this is the worst idea blizzard have ever come up with. I can't kill the demons fast enough and I'm never going to be able to. Illidan's abilities are worse than useless.I must have run back from the start more than a dozen times and I don't have the patience for this. And why can't we fall back to the previous portal rather than the start when we die? I think I shall delete the quest and never think about trying again.

Trying to do this before Shadowlands come out to clear out quests on an ALT Got Balaadur's portal down but he's still can't be attacked, Killed So many Moon guards to use Fury of the cosmos.

Done tonight, worked absolutely right. Few tips:
When you see Illidan's HP dropping a lot, run back to the last portal, it will heal you very quickly.
First remparts you do not need to kill all till the stairs, I jumped to the right to get to Balaadur as soon as I could. Do not forget to activate the portal just behind him, close to the arena gate.
Use the leech to get power from the mage as soon as you see your "MP" bar going down. Yeah, you will kill lots of mages...
Once the portal around Balaadur is down, you cannot attack him for a bit, but in this time you get a new power in your action bar, use it.
After the arena gate opens, you need to jump into the arena to kill the Colosse. Here again, kill mages to leech power and use the new power, a kind of nova.
I had all addons on. (Elvui, Silverdragon, Handynotes, etc.)

As of Oct.13 2020, you cannot completed this quest. Due to the level squish Illidan is only level 45 with 678 mana. You need to be able to cast his third spell which costs 5k mana plus 200/sec in order to destroy the final portal. You can cheese everything leading up to that point, but you cannot do this last part.

Make sure you don't destroy the Nihilam portal before activating the moon portals and receiving the Fury of the Cosmos spell.

Since the Nihilam portal is between where you enter the courtyard and the third moon portal, it's incredibly easy to inadvertently destroy it with AoE along the way - it is NOT invulnerable and doesn't have a lot of health right now (patch 9.0.2). If you do that, the portal will disappear eventually, Balaadur will remain invincible, and you'll get locked out of finishing. You'll have to abandon the quest and go through it all over again.

For anyone who is trying to do this in shadowlands and the Nihalam portal is broken but Balaadur is still immortal and can't be attacked - I used Ilidan's first ability to jump up the walls of the tower, then get to the roof, walk over and fall into the infernal siegebreaker pit. While I couldn't do any damage as Illidan, all the npcs (archers, guards, cats, mages etc.) did small amounts of damage, and everyone except the siegebreaker was functionally immortal - I just waited until the NPCs killed him and it triggered the end of the scene.

Edit - it ended the scenario but didn't finish the quest - Balaadur was still untargetable and immortal when I went back into the instance

I had problems with this quest too, Colossal Siegebreaker was immune to my damage after I jumped to the arena, had no other mages to syphon and only nearby npcs could harm it. So I ran out from the arena and used nearby npcs to kill the infernal. It took around 20 mins before they killed it but I got the credit.

So I got to Xalian Felblaze, she does her thing and stuns everyone, and just as I sacrifice my moon guards I teleport back to the portal. Ended up using some mana on infernals, thought I could just recharge it with the 2 but apparently not. I didn't have enough charges left to defeat Xalian and autoattacks weren't strong enough to out-dps her. I had to exit out and redo the start and save mana for her specifically.

This quest still bugs out if you destroy the shield too soon. Make sure you repair the 3 portals first then wait for the quest to tell you to destroy the shield. If it bugs out, you have to abandon the quest and start over. Simply exiting the scenario will not work as you will come back to the exact same point of progress from the previous attempt.

Ok finally! If you aren't sure what the heck to do: After you do "Falling Star" from Khadgar at Violet Citadel. Khadgar's Bubble Head will follow you to do "Goddess watch over you" which means collecting the tears of elune from Valshara, turn that into the hall. Then you finish "Goddess Watch Over You" with Khadgar, & then Light's Heart will give you the starting quest "Awakenings" which leads to Ravencrest's Legacy. The layout WoWHead has above leading up to this isn't very helpful or leads from anything else... :( So it was difficult for me to find the 'start'

I just completed this quest, pretty much the issue is Illidan does not regen mana so you're limited to melee attacks unless you sacrifice your mages to build mana. The constant flow of mobs will not stop but you can use the mages as a decoy and aim to complete each repair of the portals. What I found is running to the portal, most likely you will start to see a train of mobs following you, sacrifice your mages, when you are surrounded, use the leap to take them down and give you enough time to repair the portals. In most cases, the mages will respawn just in time to start aggroing the next wave.

I was barely enough to complete the third portal, my mages were still on the stair case, once I ran down they held back the majority of mobs but sacrificed them, used the shield, leap to build some time and the mages respawned and completed the final portal. The rest is pretty much using your specials and it's much easier, good luck!

If you get stuck/lost at the part "When Good Men Do Nothing", go back to the courtyard and look for a big door. Mousing over it will say "Locked", but as soon as you stand in front of it, it will unlock.

I got very lost and wandered around looking for a way to destroy the Colossal Siegebreaker, ended up on the ramparts with Broxigar the Red -- if you see him, jump back down into the courtyard and look for the big door to continue the quest :) good luck! may you be less lost than i was...

Yet another dreadful quest, I have done this a few times now, on various alts, and it's always dreadful.
Nothing else for it but to just keep slogging away until you eventually get it done, just go a stage at a time and eventually you will complete it.
For me, the worst part is having to run all the way from the starting point every time you get plastered all over the walls, especially at the end!

Uncertain if I had ever completed this miserable quest, I went back to my Legion order hall and sure enough, there was the quest bling.

Going into it, I knew it was a dumpster fire of bad coding with all the charm of a LK era vehicle quest combined with a vanilla escort quest.

Still, I picked up the quest and tried my luck with no add-ons. I went slow and steady, but:

The demon horde respawns faster than ever. At one stage they were swarming to refill ranks before I had even killed them. I was sometimes seeing 3 or more demons standing in the same place, which did at least look like something not of this world, so there's that.
The mages take far too long to respawn and do not always respawn anywhere near your position, in such instances they typically die long before they get close enough to you to bleed them dry for mana.
The assorted npc AI in this scenario is beyond broken. The mages either freeze when attacked and do nothing except die OR they run around attacking everything in sight and then die as they should. No one regrets the passing of a rabid dog.
I lost my RL will to live long before I got to the third portal. The 100+ demons swarming me as I tried to activate the port did not help. The 3-second shied is useless when the portal takes longer than that to repair and falls off the moment you get attacked.

So, in my estimation, unless you are the sort that plays Dark Souls for "fun", avoid this quest. Quite frankly, it's been obsolete since The Nighthold went live (patch 7.0.1.20740). And if I could pull it out of the game, I would take it out back of the shed and end it like it was Ol' Yeller.

This quest is embarrassing in its current state. I can't fault anyone for giving up.

Couple of tips:

Mobs will reset if you jump off at the very very end of the rampart, between the first and second portals. You can use your jump and vault to kill some mobs on the way and if you stand in the alcove behind the ledge from where you drop off, they usually reset. You can then somewhat sneak to the second portal with minimal aggro. Stick close to the walls of the castle to get to the third portal, use the trees to corner pull the mobs that will chase you after killing your moon guard.

The last boss was immune to my damage for a good while and would kill me in 4 hits. Jumping into the arena triggers the encounter, but there is a stairway back up. I used this stairway to kite him around the entire castle courtyard. I was able to recharge health at the third portal while he was casting some ability, which roots him in place. Eventually, I unlocked the falling star ability and it killed him. This quest has to be fixed as order hall progression is locked behind it. Right now it is a complete shambles.

I had some difficulty with this quest at level 56 in Chromie Time on patch 10.2.0. I was eventually able to finish and thought I'd share my tips as this was unusually time consuming to complete successfully.

For the first several phases as you work your way around the ramparts from portal to portal, the key is to take it slowly to avoid being overwhelmed. Use your attacks, wait for your mages to respawn, siphon their health and use the abilities. Don't forget about your autoattack and the fact that you can pull back to the last portal you activated in order to regenerate health. Once you have unlocked the last portal the enemies despawn. This is when I recommend doing the short sidequest chain (starting with Felspawns of Lothros ) from Captain Jarod Shadowsong just to the west of the main quest area. As far as I am aware, those side quests are not accessible after completing the scenario.

By the time you reach the final phase, you should have three attack abilities unlocked, your siphon and the shield ability giving a total of 5 buttons.
When you jump inside the arena with the large infernal, the important thing is to avoid as much damage as possible by kiting around the edge of the room to stay out of the infernal's autoattack range. It will quickly chunk you down in 6-7 hits if you're not careful and the run back is irritatingly long. After what feels like the longest minute of your life kiting that thing around the room you will unlock the ability to absorb one final round of mages. Do this and then immediately use the new ability it unlocks. This should destroy the infernal and complete the scenario.

You would think by this point in the game that we wouldn't need to do this on EVERY SINGLE CLASS/ALT. This should be a one and done with the ability to skip like other segments in the game.

Quite possibly the worst quest I've ever played in this game. Utterly atrocious from beginning to end, and frankly embarrassing in it's current state; I don't know if it was any better at launch and it's the usual scaling that's utterly laid waste to whatever this was supposed to be.

This whole questline is a chore. First you fly back and forth to val'sharah to skip some cinematics, then you do an immensely annoying scenario that should have been a cinematic you could skip.

I just kept going back down and hitting buttons until the scenario completed, I have no advice.

Honestly, how do they expect people to do "old world" content when it doesn't even work anymore?

I have been at this quest for hours, and I have no progress at all. When I enter the cenario I have a 50/50 chance of not having any moon guards spawning with me, and if they do, they dont die as they are supposed to when Im attacking Araxxas. I had to sit and watch his hp being chiseled away bit by bit for ages, and when he finally hit the 75% mark, he killed all of my meen guards at once.. This have happend so many times now that I just aborted the whole quest and moved on.. So much for completing my champions hall..

Im did this quest 28.07.2024 , after 2 hours of tryings and all the stages im currently finished with a brain and bugs, just idk , how blizz can make its so annoying, that i need to do 1 little quest about 2 hours

Here are some tips on how to do this quest:
- Quest design is a bit slow or sluggish compared to modern day quest design in wow. So do not fret when your bar is just empty and you have no abilities. You start that way. Some encounters start without the special ability needed and continuing to fight unlocks that ability to be used (like the last mob in the arena). The quest is paced quite slow and sometimes it takes a while before the next phase starts. Be patient.
- Keep an eye on your health (left bar, green) and mana (right bar, blue). If you are low on health, run to your PREVIOUS moon gate (or nearest opened), not the next one especially if it is unlocked. If you are low on mana, kill your mages.
- Some abilities on your bar only work with full mana. Kill your mages to gain more mana. You can only kill mages when you are low on mana. You are going to be killing a lot of mages, that is the only way to use your abilities.
- To gain more mages, stand just a short time at place, or safely next to an opened moon portal. Your mages regularly spawn back.
- At higher levels (60 and up) you can just run past mobs avoiding touching them and they wont aggro. If you aggro bunch of mobs, blast them away and find closest opened moon portal to regen health. Kill mages to gain mana, and to use your abilities.

Hope this helps! Bring along some patience and maybe some nice light refreshments like tea or soda pop.
