This ogre really doesn't like killing, he'll comment if you do. Weaken a dwarf, do not kill him. When he's at low HP Lunk will sit on him and the dwarf will fall asleep, you will obtain the quest item (Smithing Tuyere) needed for the other quest without killing them.

I got really annoyed trying to click around or through this guy. I did the other quests with him as well (while doing multiple other quests) - trying to fight more than one mob at once with him around is a nightmare! I'm a fan of triple pulls and he makes that really annoying. Does anyone know if there is a mod to click through guys like this, or even a mod to click through your pets (like mage pet)?

Bugged, if your bags are full, when he tries to give you what he has looted off of the mob you killed, he can't, so he freezes. Then you have to abandon and restart.

Sometimes Lunk doesn't sit on them; it seems really random. I'm a 48 rogue auto-attacking after their health reaches 40%.

If you kill two Dark Iron Steamsmiths at the same time before Lunk appears, two Lunks will spawn to give you this quest.

Lunk seems to have problems flagging targets if you've used Cheap Shot as an opener, he'll usually just stand around and not do anything regardless of how low you get the mob. This may or may not also apply to a druid's Pounce, though that ability has a damage dealing component so it might not be an issue.

Make use of another opener to do this quest properly, Garrote is a good choice as it probably won't accidentally one-shot things.

The problem I had at first, was getting ganged up on by golems and elementals. After having to kill a few things, Lunk went on strike. I had to restart the quest and just stayed at the first 2 tents with just dwarves and waited for respawns.

Still very annoying if your lvl 85 and you punch very hard you can still kill these things. As a Paladin however I just pulled with Reckoning, then let my ret aura take care of the damage. Also if your doing other quests that Lunk doesn't get involved with he'll just be mad at you for killing things while he's there. Also while your doing the quests, you will create sturdy junkbox which require a lockpicking skill of 175.

For 85s: if you find yourself damaging them too much when punching, you could take off more of your gear to weaken the blows. Works for melee classes and hunters anyway.

I had completed the 'sitting on spiders' quest, and had not completed it via the auto complete for some reason, so the quest was complete but was marked as "click to complete". In the meantime I'd obviously killed a dwarf and a new Lunk for this quest had spawned and handed me the sitting on dwarf quest.

Because the spider one technically wasn't complete, the Lunk I had was waiting for the spider turn in and wasn't able to give me credit for the Dwarfs.

I clicked to complete the spider one, abandoned the dwarf quest killed a dwarf to spawn a new Lunk and everything worked as expected.

Derp on my part, but in case it helps anyone else, that's what fixed it for me.

Also, as a well geared 85 druid I would just give myself thorns let them hit me once and right click the thorns buff. Saved me punching them in the face for 30 seconds.

If your inventoy is full, Lunk will not sit on the dwarfs. I assume this is because when he "puts them to sleep" he gives you the loot off of them. Took me a few minutes to figure out whay he was just standing there and not sitting on them. Took out a few grays from my inventory, and he started to sit on them again.

Once you have the items you need for the quest Recon Essentials, you will get random items from the dwarves. Mine included quite a few Sturdy Junkbox, Moon Harvest Pumpkin, Soft Banana Bread and Hickory Pipe.

As a level 85 hunter I just threw a snake trap at the dwarf. It does damage slowly enough that Lunk easily had time to jump on. I didn't have to remove any gear.

Doing this as a level 48 combat rogue, and having some issues. I managed to get Lunk to put two of the mobs to sleep, however, after that, he would just follow me and not touch them. I kept trying to gently lower their health, and eventually, Lunk broke completely and wouldn't move, not even to follow me.

I mounted up to turn in quests I'd already done hoping that leaving the area and coming back would help. Lunk still did not follow, and I began getting "You are mounted" error messages.

I reloaded UI, logged on and off, to no avail. I eventually dismounted (away from quest area), and error messages stopped, and Lunk reappeared next to me.

Also was doing this with another combat rogue (50) who had issues with Lunk not putting mobs to sleep. It seems for rogues (and maybe kitty druids?) it's best to not stealth and open with just an autoattack, then dps slow.

You need to damage them, but not kill them. Just like the previous quest. I, again, needed to remove my gear at 90 to complete this quest.

So I'm a 62 hunter, have dismissed my pet, removed all my gear, and I'm still killing them with one auto-attack, what can I do?

As a level 93 Shaman, I had to unequip all stat boosting gear and put it in my bank. Then I would fly up high and dismount, allowing my character to die. Talk to the Spirit Healer and accepted the Res Sickness which decreased all stats by 75%. This method was perfect for completing this quest.

Important Note: There were a lot of people doing this same quest which meant that my Res Sickness Debuff timed out before I could complete it. So I had to fly up and dismount again.

If you are attempting this as a level 100, you may run into a few issues, however how I did this as a level 100 Warrior was taunting the adds, getting them close, then using Heroic Throw, it seems like the Dwarf's cap at 1 HP for a split second, allowing Lunk to jump on the Dwarf's. However, just taunting and attacking with Devastate did not work.

Hope this helps you other fellow "soon to be" Loremaster's.

I did this quest today as a level 100 and I found that my first hit would knock the Dwarfs down to 1 health. If I hit them with any DoT's, or got a multistrike proc, the second hit would kill them, but usually one melee hit was enough to get Lunk to sit on them. As a result I had no need to remove gear or get rez sickness for this quest.

If only this worked on all quests that required weakening low level mobs.

Doesn't appear Soft Foam Sword work on this quest, unfortunately.

Although, casting Moonfire as a druid didn't instantly kill them and if Lunk is close enough he'll put them to sleep.

Newest patch, using the Soft Foam Sword to get the Steamsmiths down to 10% health, Lunk isn't doing anything. Took off all my armor and equipped my skinning knife, got them down to just below 50%, and Lunk will sit on them. :)

As others have noted, Soft Foam Sword doesn't appear to work as of the Legion pre-patch.

On my rogue, removing my weapons and using Fan of Knives seemed to lower them to a point where Lunk would sit on them.

Shame on you Blizzard... WTF was the Soft Foam Sword created for?... seems pretty damned LAME that a toy just issued during the pre-patch can't even be used DURING the pre-patch on very low level quests from (what 4?) many Xpacks ago.

On my ilevel 705 BMH, I found that equipping Simple Dagger, running up to the Dwarves (also works for Spiders in Lunk's Adventure: Spider Rider) and giving them a single hit worked fine. Since I had Auto Attack already on my action bar, I clicked it on and then IMMEDIATYELY off again.

FYI: the Simple Dagger is sold by a plethora of vendors, but the most convenient might be Gnimo who can be found on the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth. This is still ONE advantage that mount has over the bloated-priced Grand Expedition Yak!

I found using mind control on a priest actually works. Get the mobs to hit each other down, and then let Lunk sit on them.

Auto Attacking seems to work fine and reduce them to 1 HP and then Lunk can do the rest.
Soft Foam Sword seems to be useless in here.

If you're a high level hunter just use Concussive Shot as it won't kill them, just pop them to 1 HP. Lunk will take it from there

Right, so level 110 DK here, and when I came to wowhead and confirmed it wasn't just my foam sword that's absolutely useless on this quest I decided to just say fuggit since I only need 35 for the Searing Gorge Quests Achievement. I'd picked up Curse these Fat Fingers (lol) and needed to slay 12 golems... well I happened to pull a DI steamsmith on my way to a golem. I ignored the steamsmith and hit the golem with Howling Blast... lo and behold somehow it didn't outright kill the nearby steamsmith, he was weakened just enough and good ol' Lunk sat right down. I didn't want to get too excited in case it was a total fluke, but it worked 6 more times no problem!

So there you go, no stripping down or voluntary rez sickness required!

As an undead warlock level 110, I tried the Simple Dagger approach and while it is good (hits for approx 80), the undead racial "Touch of the Grave" causes a proc that one-shots my target (without any gear, approx 7500 damage, with gear it is much higher). This can happen at the first hit or later. During 10 kills, I did manage to get Lunk to sit on 1 target. This is going to require a lot of kills.

Quite frankly, I found these quests annoying. Lunk is an idiot, and I'd rather kill things than wait for him to sit on someone while behaving like a PETA member.

As a level 100 undead warlock, something that worked was this:

Make sure Lunk is facing towards you but near the dwarf.

Cast Drain Life and jump when the dwarf's bar just turns empty.

Took me a bunch of shots but I was pissed when that stupid foam sword didn't work. Hopefully this tidbit can help someone.

With my Lvl 110 fury warrior fully armed gear lvl 820 using Heroic leap worked, auto attack killed them.

Getting nude and auto attack also works.

When I noticed that the Soft Foam Sword toy wasn't triggering Lunk to sit on the dwarves (after the debuff fell off the dwarf), I was a tad sad. I submitted a bug to Blizzard, but in the meantime, I needed a different route...

As a Monk, it would appear that Spear Hand Strike takes the dwarves to 0 health, but doesn't kill them. Luckily, this causes Lunk to sit on the dwarf and grants quest credit. (Note: If you're playing Mistweaver, you'll need to swap specializations, as only Brewmaster and Windwalker have the interrupt.) As for other classes, try using an interrupt on them to trigger Lunk's "sit" ability.

If your stuck on this quest, because you oneshots the Dark Iron Steamsmiths. Undress all items and use a Simple Dagger. Can be bought from Drix Blackwrench from your Traveler's Tundra Mammoth. Works like a charm.

At level 110, as a protwarrior even with the Devastate talent, I had to take off all my armor/jewelry/trinkets and punch the steamsmiths. It left them just a sliver of health, enough for Lunk to do his thing.c

I was struggling with this @ 120 with ilvl 956. I accidentally equipped skinning knife and hit mob with it; it then had 1 % of hp left and Lunk was able to get the mob to sleep. Hope it helps ya!

As of 8.0.1, I can still punch the dwarves to complete this quest at max lvl (120) as long as I am naked. It does not work for me with any items equipped. It also does not work with Soft Foam Sword.

This quest isn't required for the loremaster achievement so if you too high level to complete it you don't have to worry about it.

As many other comments pointed out here, auto-hitting will work on this quest. However, if you have an item like Seeping Scourgewing equipped, you will kill them right away, so unequip it for this quest. Also take your time and do it one dwarf after another. If you hit a dwarf while Lunk is sitting on the previous one, you won't kill it, but Lunk won't trigger to sit on him afterwards (much like using Soft Foam Sword apparently doesn't trigger this).

As a level 120 warrior I removed all my gear and went nude. *whistles at my cute female Night Elf*.

Anyway with no gear on, and no weapons, one hit will take them down to 2 hp, with a not so happy ending for the dwarfs.

Unequiped gear with ressurection sickness (Alliance dogs...) which is 75% stat reduction, worked for me, just one punched them (autoattack without abilities) to 31% hp and lunk sat on them after that, 30% seems to be the trigger value, the foam sword lowers NPCs health to 10% which seems to skip that 30% trigger value for this q.

After trying everything at level 120 with a 465 Ilvl... I found out that obtaining Rez sickness along with my Birthday suit (naked and no gear) I was able to autoattack them down to 3 percent and was able to finish the quest.

TLDR: I grabbed a hammer that does 1 damage from the nearest vendor in the zone, stripped my Void Elf butt off and just right clicked. 120 BM $%^&*!@. Had no issues in completing this.Just make sure that Lunk is really close to you.

On hight level, just kill yourself and release in the spirit healer, then you've got Sickness and unequip all items and use auto attack.

Today, 21/09/2020, level 120 warrior.

Just remove all your equipment and punch them with auto attack, move away instantly so you wont hit them again, that will do the trick.

Their health wont drop below 2 (1%) and Lunk will jump over them and get the quest progress.

Can confirm that as of Shadowlands, as a level 50, unequipping a weapon and hitting them once with an autoattack does the trick, soft foam sword still does not trigger it

What really ticked me off on this quest was that I was also on the quest to get the Smithing Tuyere and the Lookout's Spyglass (Recon Essentials) that are held by the smiths. Then when Lunk shows up and gives you dreck for getting them to the point that Lunk can "put them to sleep". But that means, you have to just kill bunches more to get the Recon quest done. Didn't effectively save anyone and is annoying. The previous Lunk quest (riding the spiders), he at least got the venom on his belly that you could used for the other quest.

I was able to do this on a paladin at level-60, I did this:

1. Take off all your gear.
2. Die, get ressurection sickness.
3. I cast Consecration and then ran away from him.
4. he survives 1-2 ticks and Lunk is able to put him to sleep.
5. repeat and complete the quest

The Soft Foam Sword DOES NOT work unfortunately on this. BUT you can just Auto Attack with no gear and it takes them to 1HP. BUT make sure Lunk is RIGHT next to you :)

Try hitting it with a light ability. For some reason Heroic Throw just brought them to 1hp instead of killing them, and I didn't have to take off any gear.

In Dragonflight, it seems this quest is broken. Auto-attacking gets the Steamsmiths to 1 HP as other posters have said, but then Lunk doesn't do anything at all.

AS OF DRAGONFLIGHT: You can auto attack these mobs and immediately hit escape and it will take the mobs to 1 HP instantly and as long as Lunk is close he will sit on them.

** You can use the High-Powered Bolt Gun (uses Handful of Obsidium Bolts - both crafted by engineers).**
I took off all of my armor and weapons to help, it seemed to take the mobs down to zero health but not dead. BE PATIENT and let Lunk sit on one at a time.
I tried everything else here, including naked res sickness and nothing worked. The Soft Foam Sword did seem to get their health to the right number but Lunk wouldn't activate.
Also - there is a 2 minute cooldown between uses of the High-Powered Bolt Gun so patience is important but it WORKS. And because the gun does an AOE reticle on the ground you can hit more than one dwarf at a time but Lunk ignores all but the first one he sits on. Aggroing multiple dwarves at a time is ok, just make sure you only tag them one at a time with the gun to get credit for each of them.

At lv 70, removing all gear, auto-attacking once and quickly hitting escape (make sure Lunk is right there with you reduces them to 1hp.

The Foam Sword does not work.

The high-powered bolt gun may work, but you need to be an engineer.

Soft Foam Sword will not work for this one. You must strip down, clear all your possible damage buffs with a right click, auto-attack, and cancel auto-attack with escape. It will bring the mobs down to 1 HP. This works even at level 70 in Dragonflight, and should be applicable for the future until Soft Foam Sword works.

If you're a Warlock, Dismiss your demon, then use Drain Life. Let DL drain 'em for a second or two ( probably depending on your level) and stop (using Esc key) just when their health bar drops from 100% to zero %. By the way, their health bar does NOT gradually go to zero; it jumps from 100 to zero, so pay attention. You have maybe a half second to hit Esc to stop DL. I was able to do this at level 48 very consistently.

If you are a paladin and struggling and don't have the bolt gun, strip down, right-click them, and use judgment, it will keep them at 1hp
