Going around the airfield, I noticed a couple guards next to a campfire. As a joke, I attempted to extinguish it, only to find out that it actually counted for the quest!

It didn't actually extinguish the flame, but I felt a bit like Smokey the Bear anyway.

Quest item associated with this looks like a neat fire extinguisher meets ghostbusters backpack.
You can keep the extinguisher by not completing the quest.

The Horde have a similiar quest line and chance to keep this extinguisher through a quest chain in Azshara.

I think you should have been able to put out the guard's campfire, only for it to not count towards the quest, and have the guards yell at you for putting out the wrong one.

Cosmetic notice: The little backpack thingy will stay on you until you turn the quest in. I finished the quest, but ran off to do other things...4 hours later, it's still there. It persists into BGs, however, it does not persist through death. And it can only be re-applied in the airstrip.

It appears to persist through death right now, I died in firelands and it's still appearing on my character. It persists through zoning or logging out as well. It just seems to persist as long as the item remains in your bags.

Amazingly fun item, wearing it on my 85 DK right now.

This is a repurposed plague "shooter". It has a skull on the middle and part of a spinal cord connecting it to your back.

Description

The Dark Iron attack took us by surprise. Their saboteurs managed to damage most of our aircraft, steam tanks, and supplies. We were only able to get a few of our bombers airborne.

Every technician, recruit, and guard I can spare is scrambling to get the others repaired and flight-ready. Our infantry can only hold out for so long. Take this equipment and help extinguish the burning bombers.
