The plans are a drop too, often making buying the plans from the AH or hoping you get lucky a far better option then blowing 72 copper bar. At that stage, the bulk of what you make is outpaced by vendor items and trash greens, simply because the mats you need are too much for a lowbie to gather fast enough to keep up with his level.

So if you can get skillups off an item that uses 4 copper, getting this pattern by making axes that take 6 is a bit of a waste.

For reference. This requires a minimum level of 5 (required to train BS) and a BS skill of 30+.

OMG, I completed the quest long long ago, when it rewarded me a rubbish recipe which can be found everywhere, but how can I get the new recipe?

To answer Fiote's question, it's worth it if you want to be a blacksmith who's able to forge as many items as he/she can.
Personally, I try to get all the recipes/plans/schematics/patterns or what not that I can get for that specific trade.
Will you ever use the plans to make the sword? Probably not...hehe

What was the previous reward for this quest? The quest text still says plans for some armor.

Recently discovered that if you did this quest Pre-patch 2.3, you will NOT be able to retrieve the quest reward.

I confirmed this by speaking to the quest giver and with the quest ender. Neither of which would open a dialog box with me. I will put in a request with a blizz GM to reset my quest #1578 to see if it will let me redo the quest and get the reward.

"Why?" You may ask? - simple.. A level 10 asked for a 300+ Blacksmith... Being 440ish, i felt i could offer anything that my skill could provide to this poor noob... turns out i was just a disappointed to find out i couldn't provide it as well...

I have 46 BS and all the items ready, but it won't let me get the quest, the guy just isn't offering it, and I really want thoses words :(

My blacksmithing is at 65 on my Human Death Knight lvl 60, I can not pick up the quest.

edit: I did some research and found that you get the quest from Tormus Deepforge at The Great Forge in Iron Forge!

The date is 5/7/10 (the day Ironman 2 came out- already saw i, its awesome!) Realm: Anvilmar.
1. Made a night elf.
2. Went to dwarf/gnome starting zone.
3. Leveled to 6.
4. Went back to IF.
5. Learned Blacksmithing.
6. Went to Action House.
7. Bought 40 Rough Stones (10 silver for a stock of 20 - priced at 50 copper ea on my server at the time-12:06 AM).
8. Went to mailbox and picked up Rough Stones.
9. Made 40 Rough Sharpening Stones putting my skill at 35 blacksmithing (-I don't know if this matter but just to be sure, reputation with Ironforge is 2675/6000 Friendly-).
10. Went back to the Blacksmith.
11.There is a quest from Tormus Deepforge.Reward was Plans: Heavy Copper Longsword.

Hope that was helpfull in any way at all. (I probably wasn't helpful, beacause I never am, but just thought i might try and be helpful)

So am I assuming that Horde is just SoL on this item? Or am I mistaken?

If you're a recipe collector, be sure to check back when your smithing level hits 60 and Gearing Redridge becomes available, which rewards Plans: Ironforge Breastplate.

*edit* not sure why this was downrated, that recipe is also Alliance-only and the quest is easy to miss or forget about. Maybe because the sword is more unique than the breastplate /shrug

This quest was epic! I had to venture from SW to IF to start it, then buy materials of the AH to craft the armor and weapons the dwarfs need on 'the Front'. I the had to travel to Loch Modan to hand it in. WoW doesnt seem to offer many zone jumping quests anymore, I remember when a Darkshire chain would make you visit stormwind and wetlands. LF more awesome quests!

For Hordies rolling Ally-side for the first time and thus have zero funds there, I have compiled a few tips to fast track this, and condenses all posts here into one;

- Roll a Human Rogue (stealth+proximity to easy ore) and accept any spammy invite from a leveling guild (25% FP speed increase + gathering proc).
- As soon as you hit level 5 head to Goldshire, take up mining and BS
- Head just south to Fargodeep Mine.
- Shank suckas and loot their Linen Cloth. When you have enough Linen (12), you can stealth past all mobs to the nodes you need like a boss, which comes in handy during busy periods and expedites the process overall.
- Ensure you have 72 Copper Ore, 12 Linen Cloth and at least 29 Rough Stone.
- Craft 29 Rough Sharpening Stone (NOT Rough Weightstone, it will consume your Linen), and smelt your Copper Ore.
- Fly to IF (~48 copper), accept quest from homeboy at the giant forge behind you, buy 6 Weak Flux from his mate. Craft stuff.
- Fly to Gol'Bolar Quarry (free), then hoof it east down the road. Take a right at the fork and Bob's your uncle. Turn in.
- Next part (trade to Horde) kinda sucks, fly to Eastvale Logging Camp and begin your southbound trek to Booty Bay. Stealth may be feeble around red-is-dead mobs but it'll reduce your aggro radius at the very least.

I think this may be a new bug (I've reported it) but the quest list and the quest tracker both say that you need "6 Copper Plate Belts" , however the quest text says "6 Copper Chain Belts". Don't go crazy looking for the Copper Plate Belt recipe... lowbie plate wearers can't wear plate so it doesn't exist.

Note that as of 7.0 pre-Legion patch, this quest calls for 6 Copper Plate Belts. This pattern doesn't exist. It's Copper CHAIN Belts (remember, plate wearers can't wear plate at this level). Quest Summary text (at the bottom of the quest), Quest Tracker (in UI) and Wowhead all have this error. The text within the quest, however, says Copper Chain Belt (not the summary at the bottom)

This is simply affirmation of what 'miniwidge' stated last year (still in effect):

For the Quest: Supplying the Front, it will ask for Copper PLATE Belts (6) however this is a glitch/issue Blizzard is aware of. Making Copper CHAIN Belts will work for the resolution.

Today at 7.3 the quest is says:
- 6 Copper Axe
- 6 Copper Plate Belt

After the blacksmith proffesion rework you will not see "Copper Plate Belt" as a craftable item.

You have to craft "Copper Chain Belt" (6 Copper Bar / Piece) for the quest.

With 8.0.1 and no Blacksmithing whatsoever:
Buy Rough Stone (120 just to be sure, its cheap). Make Rough Sharpening Stone until you get to learn Rough Grinding Stone, once you reach 60 points you can go to Tormus Deepforge and get the two quest hes offering: Gearing Redridge and Supplying the Front.

For Supplying the Front make:
Copper CHAIN Belt (On the profession window)
Copper Axe

For Gearing Redridge make:
Runed Copper Belt
Heavy Copper Maul

Items for both:
160x Copper Bar
14x Weak Flux
12x Linen Cloth
8x Light Leather

To deliver the quests, via Taxi go to Lakeshire on Redridge and Thesalmar on Loch Modan.
Enjoy your plans, or sell them on the AH.
To learn on a Horde character, you need a friend to buy it from you on the AH.

Supplying the Front

Bring 6 Copper Axes and 6 Copper Chain Belts to Thorvald in the southern guard tower of Loch Modan.

Description

The mountaineers of Loch Modan are fighting troggs, and having a busy time of it! They need constant supplies of new armor and weapons if we're ever to get a handle on those troggs.

That's why my colleague Thorvald is there, trying to keep the mountaineers in good gear. So if you were to make some copper axes and copper chain belts and bring them to Thorvald, he would be obliged. He might even share his knowledge with you.

Thorvald is in Loch Modan's southern guard tower.
