Fished up the Quest Item in Borean Tundra, at the locations indicated by Mikecraz, after about 20 casts. The item you'll fish up is a Bloated Monsterbelly which will contain the Quest item Severed Arm.

Before trying to fish this up, make sure you're actually in the Frozen Sea itself. It's the Northrend equivalent of the Great Sea between Azeroth and Kalimdor; it crosses all the zones with a southern coastline, but only at a distance from the shore. This does not mean the Fatigue zone, but the waters immediately before it. If you don't have access to a water walking buff, there are icebergs, ice floes, debris, and ruins to stand on. Don't worry about finding monsterbelly schools, either, since you can catch the Bloated Slippery Eel from anywhere in the Frozen Sea.

The location closest to Dalaran is probably the water south of Dragonblight. Ruins of the Path of the Titans, which bisect Dragonblight, extend into the sea, and there are pieces that you can stand on to fish.

Inside of the Bloated Monsterbelly is the Severed Arm which you turn into Olisarra the Kind at the First Aid shop in Dalaran. Bloated Monsterbelly is fished up from the Frozen Sea in Northrend and can only be caught while doing the daily, Monsterbelly Appetite which starts at Marcia Chase by the Eventide Fountain in Dalaran.

I flew due south of Dalaran until I hit the Frozen Sea which ended up being close to Moa'ki Harbor. Took me about 6 casts this morning. Inside the Bloated Monsterbelly was 2x Partially Digested Meat and the Severed Arm. You do not need to be fishing in Monsterbelly fishing pools, just the open sea. Make sure you are standing in the Frozen Sea though!

I just fished up the quest item @ in the Borean Tundra. I have 450 skill + 33 on the Tuskarr rod so 483 total. I did not use a lure. There were no pools nearby so its safe to say you do not need to fish this up in one. There was plenty of junk/fish pulled up before I got it. I'd say it took at least 15 casts in order to get it.

TLDR: SE Borean Tundra, possible in open water.

Caught at 50.68 in the Frozen sea, due south of Dragonblight. Just follow the long broken path. Lots of pillars and building remnants sticking out of water... land on one of them. Caught it on the 8th cast. I have 485 skill (pole, line, gloves) Did not add bait.

Fish for a Bloated Monsterbelly in the Frozen Sea, head directly south from Dalaran for the nearest place to catch. Make sure your minimap is labeled 'Frozen Sea' before tyring to catch this.. Once you catch it, right click the fish and receive the quest item: Severed Arm.

Chance to catch is about 25%.
You do not need to cast into a pool (it's actually better not to).
This fish can be caught at any level.
Rewards Kirin Tor reputation and another random reward.

I got it from the 3rd cast in a monster underbelly school, after ~10 casts outside of schools with nothing. (In the Frozen Sea, right next to where the school popped).

It was hard finding a spot where you were standing in The Frozen Sea, but I found the pillars around 50.71 in Dragonblight a great spot. You can actually stand at 50.71 and fish. Just at the foot of the pillar.

EDIT: Deliver to Olisarra the Kind <Grand Master First Aid Trainer> in "First to Your Aid" in Dalaran at 47.39.

No co-ords needed. good location east of moa'ki harbour on some ruins sticking out of the water. fished at spot indicated in first screen shot. with the castle and dragon skeleton behind you. took me 12 casts to get Bloated Monsterbelly. Good hunting.

Starting quest: fishing lvl 125, plus 5 from my pole, and plus an additional 75 from my lure.
Casted for 40 minutes, while watching tv. unable to catch fish, going to give up despite claims on Wowhead that its catchable at any level.
Finally after all that time, and with my skill raised to 174 just from attempting the quest, I finally caught the bloated fish.
And lucky thing too, because i was going to give up at 175 skill. :D

You can actually fish this from a pool. I did this morning. I had been fishing in open water, and had no luck. A Deep Sea Monsterbelly pool spawned near me, so I fished it. I got the item, and the pool disappeared (so I am sure I was actually in the pool).

Do NOT try the area infront of Grizzly Hill's and the Easter part of Dragonblight, I went there after the JC Q to catch the Bloated fish and spend 20 min with no success, then went just east of moa'ki harbor and caught it on the 2nd try, gl.

Found good place to stand is 50.2/71.1 It is on the SE corner of a column sticking out of the frozen sea. Caught 4 Deep Sea Monsterbelly and 12 Rockfin Carp along with 17 piceces of junk. I got logged out while AFK and when I loged back on cought the Bloated Monsterbelly and a Rockfin in 1st cast.

Preferely in a Monster underbelly school.

I don´t recommend doing this with a low fishing skill. I ended up with over 80 failed swings and 150 fishing skill before i gave up.

I would recommend going to the coast of Borean Tundra, south of Unu'pe in the Frozen Sea.
Head towards the floating icebergs / islands (coords 89,56 - 77,65) you can see them on your map

There are monsterbelly pools there - it's the frozen sea - and if you fish in pools you have a chance to catch Sea Turtle for the Turtles All the Way Down achievement

For those who never leveled fishing, here are my results starting at 0 and fishing in a monsterbelly pool with NO lure or other fishing buffs:

All junk until fishing level 48
At 48, I caught a regular monsterbelly (not the quest one)
Caught all jung and 2 non-junk fish until level 66
At level 66, I caught the fish that drops the quest item.

My impression is that your chance for dropping a normal fish, and therefore the quest fish, goes up as your fishing level goes up, so even very low level like I was, there is a chance to get it.

Otherwise, I think I was very lucky to get him when I did. Happy fishing!

The point of quests not working when in raids I believe was so that the thought of difficulty won't be overshadowed by pure numbers. You can still make the quest items for cooking daily's while in a raid, so there is a legitimacy in what juke is trying to say. Since the raid cannot aid you in fishing, it could be presumed that the fish could still be caught.

I found out myself the hard way :(

Jamo, before you give flawed advices, make sure you try it first.

Fishing in a monsterbelly pool IS recommended, you usually get it in one school.
My guildies were all jiberish today that they read on wowhead that it's recommended to not fish in the school and i was like: "WHAT?"
They kept saying this quest takes a while, until you get the arm.
Funny enough, when one of the guildies who was doing the quest did fished in a school, he got it on second cast.
And before anyone bothers to downrate, be sure to try it out.

Conclusion: DO fish in monsterbelly schools.

To clarify things, again you get the arm both in monsterbelly schools as well as fishing in the Frozern Sea itself. However if you happen to bump in a school, do not avoid it, it will give you the arm far faster than fishing directly in the sea, has a bit of logic if you think of it eh? :\

The reason for not fishing in monsterbelly schools is the time saved looking for them. Getting the arm on the tenth catch in open water will take less time than hunting down a mosterbelly school and picking it up on the second cast.

If you come across a school then fish it; if you don't find one don't waste time looking for one.

I just tried and yes, I got my bloated monsterbelly on my first cast. A shame the pools are a pain to find, I would agree - If you can find open water before you find a pool, just fish it open water.

Note: If you plan to go pick up your argent tournament dailies and fish for the monsterbelly north of icecrown, don't even think about it.
The map doesn't change from Icecrown to Frozen Sea when going north.

A guide for this if you don't have a flying mount.
1. Fly to moa'ki harbour and take the LEFT turtle if it is there (Skip to number 3)
2. If not, run off the end of the path of titans and keep swimming until you hit a set of stone pillars. Once you reach them, you should be able to jump up so you are out of the water, and start fishing. When i was there, i found a Deep Sea Monsterbelly school and fished it.
3. If the turtle is there, jump on and let it start moving. Keep looking out for a bunch of stone pillars to your left (The way you got on the turtle). When you approach them, jump off and swim to the nearest pillar. Jump on, and start fishing.

If you have a flying mount, of course you can just skip this and fly straight to the pillars. You should also be able to remount on the pillars ( I had to hop to another one to be able to mount up)

Also REMEMBER you don't hand this in to Marcia Chase you hand it in to Olisarra the Kind at the Magus Commerce Exchange.

If you've picked up the Weather Beaten Journal that allows you to track fishing nodes, fishing in a Deepsea Monsterbelly school is the way to go. Even so, the schools are EVERYWHERE in the Frozen Sea, so finding one without a journal shouldn't be too time consuming.

On my first attempt at this quest, I cast in the normal Frozen Sea area about 15 times, turning up nothing. On my very first cast into a Monsterbelly School, I picked up the quest item. This may or may not just be a coincidence.

The main point is, you don't have to avoid Monsterbelly Schools. If anything they may be beneficial to your chances.

I'm a fan of the coordinates, but I'm fairly visual, too, so hopefully this will be helpful to others...as it took me a bit to find a good spot to fish for this quest, as I can not yet fly in Northrend (level 73 BE pally.)
I started in the Kalu'ak village in the harbor, where you can also catch the boats to Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord. I rode along the coast as far as I could, heading east from the harbor. I then swam around the outcropping/cliff. If looking at your map, you'll see what looks like a path leading from Wyrmrest into the Frozen Sea (as said above, you must be in the Frozen Sea to catch the right fish.) I swam to 59/80 & stood at the base of a tall column that was in the water. There are ruins running into the water & a largish dragon skeleton embedded in a rock closeby. When looking at your map, if zoomed in, you'll see a dragon's skeleton in the waters nearby as well. I was not bothered by any mobs & caught the fish in 10-18 casts. It took longer to swim to the spot that it did to catch the fish. Once in your bag just right click the fish to get your arm (the quest item.)
For those curious, fishing skill was 265 when I started fishing for him (took advantage of the peaceful spot & fished up a few more levels, too.)
Oh and don't forget you're turing this in at the First Aid trainer in Dalaran, not the Fishing trainer who gave you the quest.

If you can't find a pool of Deepsea Monsterbelly, you can always find the quest items in open water. However it is easier to find the quest item in a pool.

fly over to dragonblight at (50,71). You will see some sinking ruins, and you can stand on some of the bases of the pillars. Took me 5 casts into open water. Easy as abc

I highly doubt you read the posts, because if you did you would have absorbed the information that this can be caught anywhere in the Frozen Sea. Furthermore, there are coordinates in posts before the one you replied to, which you would know if you actually read them.

This is completely doable without a very high level of fishing. I'm at 280 (385 effective) and caught this in the frozen sea after about 4 minutes.

In case others are wondering, I fished one out of a school off the Island SE of Unu 'pe. My skill hit 95 and aquired "Old gnome and the sea!" achievement at the same time, so I am assuming your fishing skill doesn't need to be that high. Took me about 15mins at this skill level.

I don't know if I was unlucky but when i was fishing in the frozen sea south of Dalaran it took 30 min to get the Bloated monsterbelly.

I would recommend using Schools.

If you have the flight path to Wyrmrest Temple, one of the easiest ways to get the Bloated Monsterbelly is to head due south from the Temple along the Path of the Titans, until your minimap says Frozen Sea. There are broken pillars in the sea you can stand on while fishing, for example at 50,68. Even if you are at lvl 450 fishing, you will fish up a lot of trash, unless you bring all of your fishing buffs with you. Even at an effective level of 555, I still occasionally fished up junk. Ensure you right-click on the Bloated Monsterbelly and you have the arm, before heading back to Dalaran. Happy fishing!

Completed this quest while skilling my fishing. Was at 275 or 276 when I picked up the quest. Stuck one of those fancy engineering lures on to my default rod and managed to catch it in about 4 minutes using the lure as a timer.

I do like how blizzard is allowing us to skill while completing these quests.

This is for the people who

1. Do not have a flying mount or cannot levitate from the cliff

2. Are not level 80 characters who have a +300 fishing, I was only 305

3. Do not have coordinates like me

Fly to wyrmrest and start traveling south and when you look at the map, if you dont have it already, about 1/2 inch to the right of that purple blotch, there is a trail that runs into a little place called Emerald Dragonshire. That will take you to the shore. It's not that mean of a place, there are some cranky flowers there and some flying beasts, but safe enough for 73lvl. From the shore there you should be in the frozen sea and can swim to the nearest underwater stone pillar and should do fine finding the Bloated Monsterbelly. It took me 'bout 20 min. to get one. Dont forget about the other Deepsea Monsterbelly, I caught one, they do not have the arm. So make sure you right click on the correct one and have the are before you leave.

As of right now (June 23 '09) I am unable to cast anywhere in the Frozen Sea south of Borean Tundra. It says my cast doesn't land in fishable water though I am maxed out in skill and have a +75 lure on my +20 fishing pole.

I have tried to fish in open water with levitate, standing on the sides of iceblocks, and tried doing both with schools of fish and still no go.

It also works to go out to the Path of Titans where it enters the water. Just stand on one of those chunks (it seemed to work easier if I was barely standing in the water) and fish away like normal.

I decided to see if the claim that you could do the fishing dailies at any fishing skill level.

My fishing started at 5 probably due to one of the low level Draenei starting quests. I'm level 80. Used a standard fishing pole with no lures (so no fishing modifiers). This daily was the one I got today.

Just used the advice from everyone here so far and went to a monsterbelly school south of Unu'pe.

My fishing skill ended up at 67 when I caught the bloated monsterbelly. So apparently it is, in fact, possible. Up until that point, I caught exactly 0 fish. All of it was junk.

I can confirm this as well. My fishing is around 165 (+100) lure, it took aprox. 25 catches before i got the bloated monsterbelly. I fished up junk and a few good fish.

Actually, it does. You just have to travel so far North that you are almost past the half way Fatigued/"point of no return" to reach it. So, if you are feeling risky, you could make a suicide run up North for a few attempts at your daily. Could spice things up.

Oh, how do I know this? I'm one of those bored people that like to explore. Northrend hasn't turned up much of interest, but if you're curious the sea cliff just North of Ulduar is pretty.

Using a potion that allows you to walk on water, made this quest very easy for me as lvl 71 without flying mount. Flew to Borean and walked northeast on water until it said "The Frozen Sea". Had 180 fishing + 100 lure and got it in around 30 casts.

Frequency of fishing catches are not affected by your fishing skill - your fishing skill only determines if you will catch a fish (or other white) or a grey item. The higher the skill, the better the chances of getting something useful out of the cast.

I have done this fishing daily many, many times and only have to cast a few times to get the Bloated Monsterbelly.

Fly to Kamagua located off of Howling Fjord. Then, fly to the small icebergs located west northwest in The Frozen Sea. (The map shows the coordinates as 892, -3861). If you do not have access to coordinates, there is a picture of a dragon's head on the map that I use as a marker.

There, you will normally find one or more Deep Sea Monsterbelly schools. Just fish in one of these and you will catch a Bloated Monsterbelly. Open your bag, right click on the Bloated Monsterbelly and the severed arm is yours!

(I just caught a Bloated Monsterbelly in a Moonglow Cuttlefish school at the same location. Guess it does not matter what type of school - any will do.)

Standing at co-ords 50.6, 69.8 on the tilted pillar, I started at fishing skill 9 and reached 75 without getting this item. I was definitely in the Frozen Sea.

I then got to skill 146 (15-20 mins) on the icebergs south of Death's Stand (Borean Tundra - co-ords 33, 65) and finally caught it! Took ages, but no school in sight.

I have not been able to find a single Monsterbelly school in the places that I used to use to complete this quest. They may have all moved, or they may have been removed. Regardless you can now complete the quest by fishing up Monsterbellies direct from the sea (i.e. no schools), but it takes significantly longer.

awesome advice and right on the money. first i went to moaki harbor, south of dalaran, and was fishing in the frozen sea there. my skill went from 314-318 w/out catching a monsterbelly.

flew to where you stated and there was a school of monsterbelly fish and i was able to complete the quest on the 2nd cast.

You may need 225 in fishing to catch the fish. I started trying at 200 fishing and stood in one spot catching mostly greys and common fish, as my fishing slowly leveled up over the dozens of casts.

Bloated Monsterbelly was the very first catch after I hit 225 in fishing.

To Start you can only get the fishing dailies from Marcia at level 70, I just got my character to 70 & they became active, even though I have had max fishing since mid 40's

I found fishing in monsterbelly pools easier than open water, fished for 10 minutes without getting it & then tried a pool & got it on the second cast.

I am currently a level 70 paladin with 254 fishing skill and I got the severed arm after about 15 mintues of fishing in the frozen sea with no Deep Sea Monsterbelly schools. I haven't got a chance to try fishing in the schools yet but so i've read it is recommended :P

But just letting you all know its possible to do the quest without finding a pool :). Just takes a little more time and patience!

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, the turn in NPC for this quest is different from who you aquire it from. A guildie made that mistake and when I looked it up here for him and came here I was able to let him know. Reading quest text = win. >.<

Are you fishing and fishing and cant get the bloody arm?
Here are 3 important facts:

1: Make sure you are not in a group.
2: Make sure you are are in correct area "The Frozen Sea" - best place is ancient ruins, near Moaki harbor.
3: Make sure you are high enough level (min. fishing: 180), and on character (min. level: 70).

You must have at least Fishing Skill on level : 180 and use lure +50 fishing. (not sure you need the lure, but i used it)
If you are lower level than 180 you wont get the arm. Im adition,
if you are under 225 in fishing, you MUST fish for a LONG time before you get the arm.

So you've been fishing for an hour in the The Frozen Sea- still no catch? Well perhaps you neglected to fully read the quest like I did- the severed arm is INSIDE the bloated monsterbelly fish- I thought it was vendor trash and didn't open it- finally had a someone else tell me it was in the bloated fish. I fished about 30 minutes longer than I needed to :(

Deep Sea Monsterbelly Schools can regularly be found near 14.5, 54.0 in Howling Fjord (near Shattered Straits). Make sure you are in The Frozen Sea when you fish... of course.

Fishing in a Deepsea Monsterbelly school will generally yield much faster results than fishing generally in the Frozen Sea. I have frequently caught the Bloated Monsterbelly on my first cast from a Monsterbelly school; it's very unusual not to get the Bloated Monsterbelly within 5 casts from a school.

FISH FROM A MONSTERBELLY SCHOOL! I fished from a school off of an iceberg just south of the boat launch at Death's Stand. I caught the fish and got the arm 2nd cast! easy quest.

It's not 25% at all levels. I did this at 228 fishing and by the time I caught it I was at 238 fishing. That's like 100 casts, so for me it was closer to 1%.

Well, unless you are a high lvl fisher - or you have no constraints on your personal time - this is generally a bad daily to quest. Or unless you give it a set amount of time you'll pour into it. I have done it and gotten it in the first 10 casts; however, I have also spent over 30min casting for it and had to give up. Obviously, 30min of questing is far more productive.

From here on out, I am assigning 10min of casting to this, and giving up thereafter. It is more like a 'MonsterWaste' quest past that.

don't waste your time fishing the frozen sea. the icebergs around 89,56 host schools of monsterbelly. a school or two and you will have your loot.

Ok, so for those of you unsure of how percentage drop rates work, here's the lowdown: if something has a 25% drop rate that means that every time you down that creature or cast your fishing line, there is a 25% chance you'll get it. This does not mean that for something that has a 1% drop rate that if you will x creature that drops 87 times you'll have a drop rate of 87%. You'll still have that 1% drop rate. Your success rate on something is different. It took 100 casts to get an item that has a 25% drop rate, sucks to be you. So your success rate was 1% on the 25% drop rate item. There is a difference. After briefly glancing at this entry, I attempted fishing in the Frozen Sea's open waters around Kamagua with a fishing skill of 326; after over 20 casts and not one monsterbelly, I came back and read more carefully.

Mounted up and flew off in search of the nearest school. Did not see one until approximately 50/70, almost directly south of Wyrmrest Temple. You'll be able to just barely stand on some of the pillars or ruins there to fish the school if you don't have a water-walking potion handy (I didn't). Bloated monsterbelly caught on second cast. There's simply no reason not to find a school.

For late night fishermen: I have done this quest numerous times and always go to Unu Pe and get the quest item from a monsterbelly school in just a few casts. I went at night (10:55 PM server time) with a full moon in the air (WOW sky) and all the schools were moonglow cuttlefish and there were no monsterbelly schools. I had no luck fishing from the moonglow schools. Finally a monsterbelly school popped up ( 1 to about 20 moonglow cuttlefish schools). I got the quest item with a single cast from the monsterbelly school. The date was March 1st, 2010, one day after a real full moon. I don't remember this many moonglow cuttlefish schools from prior late night fishing trips. I wonder if the moonglow schools replace the monsterbelly schools when there is a full mooon and if this correlates with a real full moon. The quest item does not appear to be catchable in the moonglow schools.

Fishing in the frozen sea around moaki harbour took about 10 casts and nothing. Fishing in a Monsterbelly school I caught it on 2nd cast.

Since last patch this quest seems to be changed..
I got the quest 'disarmed' instead, fishing for a 'Severed Arm' like this one,
but it can now be fished up around the Dalaran Prison ( aka Violet Hold ).
The arm is eaten by a different fish though; it can be found in a 'Bloated Slippery Eel'.

The 'Monsterbelly Appetite' in the 'Chasing Marcia' achievement also changed to 'Disarmed'.
Didn't notice it at fist and wasted time fishing in the Frozen Sea without any luck until I checked my quest log.

Lot less travel to get your bag of fishing goods =).

Well the first time we completed this quest we went from the dock at Mao'ki Harbor to the icebergs South. We found the Monsterbelly pools easily my b/f has the fish find and there were approx 1/2 dozen peeps fishing.
The second time however took two days until we read ALL of the posts.

Moonglow Cuttlefish pools (4 locs listed below) when fished out of disappear. I used the generic fish find talent... Got near the icebergs and went underwater to find and identify which fish were active.

After fishing four of the Moonglow we had 3 Deep Sea Monsterbelly pools spawn around the icebergs. Of course something went wrong with the latest patch so it didn't work the second time, had to abandon quest and we received the Terrorfish quest instead.

The map did say Borean Tundra but as we got close to the icebergs Frozen Sea flashed on the screen. Hopefully the quest isn't permanently broken, here's the locs we had pools spawn at:

ROFL Basje we must have been updating at the same time... I wanted to verify that Moonglow pools do indeed respawn the Monsterbelly pools... Four Moonglows and we had three Monsterbelly's spawn near the icebergs.
Thankfully you gave good news cause I was telling everyone it was broke... wasted two days following what we did the first time and NOTHING worked.
If you have the Monsterbelly quest now I suggest you abandon it, my partner and I did and we were both given the Terrorfish quest instead.

So we'll try the new improved WAY easier hint... I'll assume it's correct because we've all noticed the standing room only to fish near Violet Hold entrance.

Since there isn't any info on wowhead yet about the 3.3.3 update version, you now fish in the Violet Hold area for a bloated slippery eel. Now instead of the guy losing his arm in the fishing mishap, a "particularly viscous inmate" of Dalaran Prison cut off a guard's arm and tossed it into the water. The rest is like before, return the severed arm to Olisarra the Kind in the First Aid station in Dalaran. Now instead of just getting a few gold in the bag of treasures, you get 13g at completion plus a few gold and other stuff in the bag along with Kirin Tor rep. Not bad for a few minutes work.

Even though this is now a moot point with the changes in 3.3.3, I never once fished from any school to get the bloated monsterbelly. I just went straight down the Path of the Titans off the Dragonblight coast and stood on a piece of rock sticking up out of the water and cast in whatever direction I happened to be facing. Once I hit 450 fishing skill I could usually fish up the bloated monsterbelly within a dozen casts or less. So far doing the new version I've had the same luck in Dalaran with the bloated slippery eel.

As of patch 3.3.3, the arm is now included in Bloated Slippery Eel fished in Dalaran. The new fish replace the Bloated Monsterbelly but has the same id.

Also, the fishing quest now gives 13 golds plus the Bag of Fishing Treasures at level 80 unlike the other daily fishing quests that only gives the bag.

This was a very informative and useful post, but is now out of date. My first time trying this quest was in 3.3.3, and I stopped reading comments after this one. What a mistake!

You can no longer get the arm in The Frozen Sea; instead it comes from fishing outside the Violet Hold in Dalaran itself.

Also note that the arm now comes from a Bloated Slippery Eel rather than a Monsterbelly.

Honestly, wtf? I used to do Monsterbelly Appetite, so when I saw this, I just flew down to a spot I know wich always drops a the fish that drops arm in second or first try, now suddenly there's "Disarmed?"
Wth is that about? For anyone reading this I'm guessin the prison is the Violet Hold where thoose big bosses are held as prisoners so if no answer has been given yet or this hasn't been confirmed. I'd go for a try there. I'm doing it myself now.

I'm a little confused why so many of these comments say you have to fish in the The Frozen Sea. The quest text clearly says to fish in the waters outside the Dalaran prison (The Violet Hold). Then again, many of these comments also seem to be referring to a different quest (called Monsterbelly Appetite?). Maybe the quest has been changed since these comments were made.

At any rate, to do the daily quest Disarmed! you only need to fish in the waters right around The Violet Hold until you catch a bloated fish (it may be an eel). You right-click this fish to open it and the arm is inside. You can't catch the arm by itself, so pay attention to what you are catching.

After TWO days of fishing this daily in the places mentioned above I had given up all hope, until I came across the lovely guide on <a href="http://www.elsanglin.com/northrend_daily_quests.htm" target="_blank">El's Extreme Anglin</a> which told me to fish in the water right in front of The Violent Hold in Dalaran. And after about 13 casts, I caught the wormy thing. I have yet to get the daily again, but if I do, hopefully I can confirm this fishing spot.

Well just in case anyone is trying to do this quest and is half asleep like me, IT CHANGED! Why? I don't know. But you NO longer go fish for the Deep Sea Monsterbelly. Now you just get the quest and go to Violet Hold in Dal and fish there. You will get a Bloated Slippery Eel and there inside is your arm. Grrrrrr!

I have just spent ages fishing outside the Dalaran prison, only to find that I had actually fished up the item. You will eventually fish up a bloated slippery eel. When you get it, open it up and the arm is inside.

After reading about the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, I started fishing when I stumbled upon this quest in Dalaran. Leveled from 1-75 skill and caught at 75. Probably took me about 45 min the first day i tried during which i lvled to 75 and about 10 casts the next day.

The item that that contains the arm (bloated slippery eel) has the exact same icon and a similair name to another common item fished from the water outside Dalaran prison (slippery eel). It's easy to not notice that you've already got the item and then carry on fishing for ages without realising.

Here's a macro you can use to cast and also use the various quest fish:
#showtooltip Fishing
/use Royal Monkfish
/use Bloated Slippery Eel
/use Phantom Ghostfish
/cast Fishing

If any of the quest fish are in your bags they'll be used. If they aren't then the macro will do the next cast.

This keeps me from having to check my bags or clutter up my buttons with quest items to use.

Been doing the Dalaran cooking and fishing quests for a few weeks now and just noticed I have yet to ever get this quest. Is anyone else having this problem. Level 85 with 355 fishing atm. Been getting the fishing quest daily with no luck, so now i'm only going to accept the quest if it is the Disarmed! quest, getting tired of the other ones at this point. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

I was having a lot of trouble with this quest and thought I may have been doing something wrong, so I left the area numerous times but didn't abandon the quest.
I spent over 30mins in the area the first two times with no luck. Second catch on my third visit I got the bloated eel, this quest is all patience.

I was working on this for about an HOUR, fishing in the CORRECT place, not in a raid group... nothing.

Then I noticed I was still transformed into a pirate from the stupid Hallow's End event. I clicked it off and my next cast, got it. Maybe coincidence, maybe was the real cause of my troubles, but just to be safe, REMOVE ALL YER SHAPESHIFTS.

One thing I will say is, depending on how the RNG behaves with you, it might take a long long time before you actually fish it up if you are low level in fishing.

On the bright side, you will get a lot of skill gains in the profession whilst doing it.

I just did this quest. Got a little frustrated which is why I came out here and saw all of your comments. It took me longer than normal to get this bloated eel, but I finally got it after about 30 or so casts using Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole (+20 Fishing) and a Shiny Bauble (+75) and I"m at level 223 on my fishing skills. I think it would have eventually popped up if I hadn't used the Shiny Bauble, but after 20 casts I got impatient. By the way, I'm pretty sure the amount of money they give you is dependant on your level. At least I noticed in dailies in other cities that the amounts for the same quests increase the higher level you get.

So with that in mind, I'm a level 73 and I was disappointed because I didn't get that 13 Gold someone mentioned. Just the 7 Gold 43 Silver. Then I noticed that one of the items in the bag was a Tower Key and it was listed as Poor, however, it had a vendor sell value of 16 Gold and 66 Silver! Woohoo! I'd be interested to read what others are getting in their bags.

Thanks for help. When I saw there were others frustrated it gave me hope to keep casting, otherwise I might have given up.

Finally got the Bloated Eel after gaining lvl255 in Fishing. Started at lvl220 with a +75 lure.

Tried again on lvl80 starting with lvl220 and +100 lure. Got @ lvl238

The best remaining Dalaran fishing quest as of 5.0.5 since:

1) quest gives 16.54g at 85 (unlike some others, yes that means you Jewel of the Sewers)
2) quest requires zero travel
3) Loot sack contains 6-9g and various other rewards which auction very well (waterlogged recipes, deviate fish, stormjewels (still useful in sub 285 gear and on 60+ alts) and other gold items (100g bell, poison quest)
4) Awards (edit) 60,000 guild XP at 85, and should stay green and give XP all the way to 90.

Downsides:

1) requires fairly high skill, fails stop around 520 buffed fishing skill
2) requires fast access to Dalaran (I'm still hearthed there since I can port to SW from there anyway)

Data for fishing at violet hold with quest:

Total casts: 2492
Shimmering minnow 1500 (60.2%)
Slippery Eel 620 (24.9%)
Bloated Slippery Eel 238 (9.6%)
Hall Full bottle of prison moonshine 127 (5.1%)

(Pedants please note this will not add up to 100% since Fishing buddy doesn't work out the % of the quest drop)

On average it requires 10-11 casts to complete, can be as few as 1 and I've had a few that took 25.

You may think I do this quest too much, but I actually lost half my data so this is a big understatement. I average 40-50g from this quest per character after auctions, and do it ten times on a day when it is up. I guess I have a high tolerance for fishing.....

PS make sure you HAVE the quest before fishing outside VH. A few times I've thought "this is taking a while" before noting that I didn't actually pick the quest up. Dumb? oh yes!

PPS If you see someone doing this quest, and there is a spot to fish that is free that is nowhere near them, please take that instead of standing right next to them. Some of us fish by sound and hearing your bobber is no help there. Cheers. (Edit - it appears to me that we no longer hear other people's fishing bobbers as of 5.0.5 - about time!)

Just adding this comment so everyone knows what a dunce I am.

It seems I had come to Dalaran with a fishing skill of about 16, so I figured it would be as good a time as any to build up my fishing skills. (Well, actually, the best time would have been to build up my fishing skills as I leveled, rather than waiting until I was level 72 to get started.

I took this quest, figuring I may as well get some reward for the fishing marathon I was about to engage in.

I fished and fished until my skill was over 320, and still no severed arm. I did, very early on, recover a Bloated Slippery Eel, which was labelled "Quest Item." Figuring this was for another quest, I decided to save it.

I pressed on, in my fishing, figuring that the quest was programmed somehow to not grant the severed arm to anyone who didn't have the skill level appropriate to be in WotLK in the first place, which, I figured, was around 350. Then it finally occurred to me to click on the bloated eel I had been carrying around for about 300 skill ups in Fishing, and sure enough, the severed arm was inside it.

Ah, well. I had intended to get my skills up anyway.

If you have low fishing skill, you could run a quick round through the sewers and pick up Underbelly Elixir. The one that tranforms you into a tuskarr will also give you +50 fishing skill.

I don't think the guard classified this as "an unfortunate workplace accident."

Remember kids, having your arm viciously removed and thrown away isn't an accident, it's a crime. And a cause to go to the hospital.

You have to go to the WotLK dalaran, to complete this quest. I had no idea why I couldn't turn this in - finaly realised it, after a while.

I started fishing at level 51 and got the bloated arm at skill level 107.

Grabbed this quest at 95/300 Vanilla fishing, under the new skill separation by expansion system. Fished up 8 gray items and 3 fish before getting the bloated eel. This fishing gave no skill ups.

You fish long enough in the water outside the prison, and I'd bet my favorite fishing pole that arm will surface. Find that arm, and bring it to Olisarra the Kind here in Dalaran. She'll know what to do.
