You'd think this would be a simple quest but you'd be wrong.

You run into the mine, take out the guards and just talk to the slaves and click on the "You're free" chat option. Then they will either:
1. Run out of the mine, free
2. Go berserk and attack you
3. Rant, rave and throw themselves off the ledges at the back of the cave

How quick you finish this quest depends on how lucky you get.

The entrance to the mine is at 57, 57 right in the middle Ymirheim. It looks like a cave on the world map.

keep talking to the slaves till they ask you to se them free. If they say anything else crazy or whatever jsut say goodbye and ask them again. When they ask you they'll say something like, "I have to get out of here. Can you set me free?" Simple.

I think their reaction to your dialog might be based off of how many Taskmistresses are in the immediate area. I only was able to get slaves to run free once i cleared the area of the Taskmistresses.

I found something cool with this quest.

When they go crazy and yell something, talk to them right away or while they are running. I did it a few times and i got credit for them running away free. However, they might attack you as well.

Oh yeah, and to add more superstition to this quest..

I talked to 6 dwarves while doing this quest. 2 of them attacked, and the last 4 jumped off the ledge.

Goes to show that dwarves are just too in love with mining :[

Edit - Spelling of "Their" fixed to "They're" in game, still "Their" on wowhead ;p Slow to update.

The thing that occurs to me is that the saronite mine seems to have no mineable saronite and no one seems to be carrying any, does this bother anyone else, especially given the enormous saronite rocks that you see in the cave.

I don't see this quest. I found Absolom the Pious, but no daily quest marker.
I'm 5 bars shy of exalted, having another daily would make it that much easier.

The first thing i referred to when I did this quest, was the song "Slaves to Metal", by the band Accept. In the song, they sing about how they are "locked into the taste of steel" and "chained up to the sound".

For me, this was an obvious reference.

Rogues can run along talking to the slaves and releasing them as you go. If any agro you, just ignore them and keep talking to more slaves.

Once your health gets low enough, just vanish. By this time you should be done/almost done with the quest.

This quest sucks I released about 30 slaves and not 1 was freed skip and do the others this isnt worth the effort

First time you enter you come across another Q inside Mind Tricks

I was able to solo it, as the Foreman can be both kited/stunned and disarmed, all done in only a bit of heroic gear..

I'm a Hordie but the same applies to the Alliance version of this quest I'm sure:

Since 3.0.8 I seem to have much better luck with this quest. Something like a 50% chance of a 'good' outcome when speaking to the slaves.

Much needed change imo.

Or... it could be a common expression? Being a "slave to" something is not a concept exclusive to metal. Seriously. What is it with metal fans trying to think every common expression in existence is a reference to their favorite metal song?
THEY ARE GENERIC PHRASES. YOUR MUSIC IS NOT SPECIAL. GET OVER IT.

If this were an isolated post, yes. But keep browsing. You'll find a multitude of posts on new WotLK content pages all attempting to equate the name to some metal song. Let's see a few examples here:
Hallowed be Thy Name - Claims to be an Iron Maiden song reference.
Aces High! - Yet ANOTHER Iron Maiden claim.

Make up your mind. "Hallowed be Thy Name" doesn't claim to be anything, because it can't. "Aces High!" is a heavy metal song by Iron Maiden and Arch Enemy.
As to the original post which is being purged:

Considering the fact that this is a Saronite mine, which is a type of metal on Azeroth, then there seems to be no reason at all for Shadowveileds post to be downrated.

As long as we're making tenuous connections to songs, the line you hear in your head - "Tell yourself again that these are not truly your friends" - reminds me of the song Exploding Boy by Alkaline Trio, which has a pretty similar line as one of its lyrics. Probably just a coincidence though.

If you are quick enough, you can talk to the ones that kill themselves again. 90% of the time, you will get credit for rescuing them even though they still jump off the ledge.

Did this quest change within the last couple of days? The last two days I did this daily, I went 10 for 10 with rescues. None ran away and none attacked me in two days.

Was this just luck or did they change it?

This quest actually went pretty fast for me. For the first 5, I had to talk to about 20 miners to get them freed. The next 5 I got all in a row. Pure luck. Took me about 10 mins total as a 77 shammy.

A strategy I use that works for any Night Elf (and similar to Rogue strategy discussed above) is to just ignore all guards and angry miners attacking you and just continue talking to new miners. It saves a lot of time when you don't bother killing them all. When you get low on health, just shadowmeld, then heal up however you see fit and continue. Makes it a lot quicker, and is especially good for tank specs like me (I am bear tank).

The slaves do 1 of three responses when you attempt to liberate them:

1. Attack you and enrage
2. Flee further into the cave.
3. Accept their freedom and you get a 1/10 increase for this for the quest.

As a ne surv hunter this quest is very fun.

Using a combination of Wyvern stings, pet, popping freeze traps, and, when you have 3-4 enraged slaves and a few Val'kyr taskmistresses on your hide, dropping aggro via a shadowmeld or feign death...you can literally just sprint through the cave and free the slaves in a few minutes at most avoiding almost any combat.

I am a feral druid lv 80 just ran across this quest yes i know it takes me a while to play this game but any way i found this quest to be easy doing it with the other daily killing 20 of them so some turn and run ,some attack. but easy to do in 15 min. or less easy money ,easy rep.

If I'm going into a mine and risking my life to free a slave and they go bonkers and attack me IRL I'm not gonna be very happy about it.

This quest had the most frustratingly bizarre random number generation I've seen, assuming that's what determines the slave's response.

I quickly freed 7 out of 10 in 9 attempts, two of them just walking away. None of them attacked.

Then at 7 out of 10, I failed to free another one in 15 straight attempts! Nine of them fought me, six walked away.

Then, two more freed in a row, 8 and 9.

At 9/10, seven straight slaves attacked me before finally getting the 10th.

Highly bizarre and statistically very improbable, I think.

Kill the Taskmistress!

I read in an earlier post that if you clear out all of the Taskmistresses guarding the slaves, that the slaves are less likely to attack you when you try to free them.

CONFIRMED!

I still had about 1/3rd of the slaves that I talked to flee in terror. But the other 2/3rds accepted freedom and I got the completion fairly quickly. I had only ONE SINGLE SLAVE attack me in the whole group. Just one.
