Finding Apprentice Osterkilgr:

Once you enter head straight forward till you see stairs on your right side.
Go down the stairs, turn left and go to the bottom of the staircase.
Look to your left (under the stairs) and you should see Apprentice Osterkilgr.

To complete the quest just beat him down to around 40%, then he'll give you the information needed, and you can simply kill him.
He will drop Dr. Terrible's "Building a Better Flesh Giant", which starts the quest The Sum is Greater than the Parts, which you should do before leaving The Underhalls.

My quest didnt work the first time i tried, before i walked into where he walks. If you kill him on too long distance, he might not tell u the information at 40 %.

Valhallas, the area where this quest takes place, is the area of the after life in norse mythology.

Thus having this the vyrkul undead area is pretty reasonable. Good job blizz.

Rogues can just gouge him at around 40% of his hp. It turns off your auto attack until you use an offensive ability on him. This may or may not be helpful to some people having trouble getting the info due to killing him too fast.

i have killed him the first time, my thorns killed him from auto damage, i waited 2 minutes the second time he said one thing, im gonna try again but this is frustrating.

These co-ords are right but for those not using them, you're looking for a cave entrance that is in the area Valhalas. The name "The Under Halls" didn't even show up until I was practically inside the entrance. On your map you can see the cave entrance located in NE Jotunheim and it's the first cave entrance SW of The Shadow Vault. Good Luck.

Actually, Valhalla is the area for afterlife in VIKING mythology (including Norse) And it is a place of endless battles for the dead Viking warriors

It is a Quest to your Left opposite from the Staircase that you have to go down to do Deep in the Bowels of the Underhalls ,,,
Bethod Feigr ,,, is the Quest Giver ,,, he is a Big Ugly decayed VARGUL...

It's not a a cave; it is a building set into the mountains; it faces the pit in Valhalas on the side of the pit that does not have the Dragon Head Poles. I have submitted a screenshot which should be available by 4/29/12.

Be careful not to kill him too quickly. My ret pally demolished him and I didn't get the "beat the info out of him" part of the quest, so I had to kill him twice. Lucky he respawns fast.

As a 90 hunter, even having a belt on will make you one shot this guy. I took off all my gear and punched him, making sure to hit esc to stop auto attack.

When WoD hits, no idea how to do this at level 100 :s

Post-WoD patch, here's another "beat him up" quest where, if you're a 90, you'll need to suicide and take the Resurrectio Sickness before you'll be in a position to hit him without 1-shotting the guy.

As a level 90 warrior avoiding killing him by doing anything was difficult.

I ended up using a G91 landshark that drops from the Blingtron 4000 and one mass spell reflection on one of his fireballs. That left him barely alive, but that got me the beat him up part.

But I'm sure some of the lower level engineering bombs usable by everyone could be useful here.

Ran into the same problem as a lot of players below. (while trying to earn exalted status with Ebon Blade for those sweet sweet Death Knight garrison guards)

Tried res sickness. Red Rider Air Rifle. What finally worked was Misty Pi'jiu Brew Misty Pi'jiu Brew

Just let the panda run up and punch Apprentice Osterkilgr a few times, he will talk.

I figured I'd finally get around to finishing northrend loremaster, smooth until this quest.
So, as a 100 you are ridiculously over-powered for this quest(hit/don't kill) this is how I did it-

Strip all your gear, die, rez at graveyard to take rez sickness, run to him and melee attack.
4 hits would have killed him, for me anyways, stopped at 3 and mission complete.
You're still pretty overpowered, as 100 with all your gear on, to continue questing without rez sickness affecting you too much. FYI

Death knights can use control undead on one of the npcs nearby to get the info before killing him.

In order to beat the information out of him as a level 100 character you have to strip naked and suicide, then talk to the spirit healer so you can get the resurrection debuff. After that you can easily beat up Apprentice Osterkilgr to obtain the information the quest asks for.

For any 90+, you can get this quest before finishing Ebon Blade Prisoners. By doing this, you can actually use freed ebon blade deathknights to wound the Apprentice Osterkilgr and get your quest completed without dying and resurrecting with sickness.

As a ret pally, you don't need to ress with sickness, simply unequip all your gear and agro 2 mobs (one at a time) and melee hit one of them using seal of righteousness, the AoE provided by the seal twice will do enough damage to bring Osterkilgr's health down without killing him ;)

Very easy to do as a level 100 Hunter. Taking off gear and auto-attack will kill him. Instead, just take Glyph of Mirrored Blades and when his cast on the first Fireball is about to end use Deterrence. He will immediately cast Fireball again, allowing you to reflect 2 with one charge. Each Fireball will hit him for 18% of his max HP. He will continue to cast Fireball, draining his mana, while Deterrence is on CD. Just interrupt, silence, stun him to keep him from going OOM. Ez.

A tip for DKs trying to do Loremaster: you can Control Undead one of these guys Valhalas Vargul ( I actually dont know if there are other undead NPC around this is just the first i found) turn off his cleave auto cast and send it to slowly damage and kill the Apprentice Osterkilgr. It will be taking damage so be prepared to heal it with Death Coil - you can get Runic power by simple standing a bit away from the NPCs and spaming Blood Boil, Death and Decay, etc. No need to take off any gear - did it with 737ilvl . GL

For those lvl 100 Druids out there, if you do this after the prisoner quest, you can kill yourself, get rez sickness and slowly damage him down with hurricane. let it proc once or twice and escape until you get the credit, then just kill.

For people who tries this quest on a level 100-toon. Here is what you need to do when you don't want to kill it in 1 hit.

1. Undress yourself from all your items.
2. Go to the entrance of the halls.
3. Mount up and fly up.
4. Dismount and kill yourself.
5. Get the ressurection debuff.
6. Go back to the entrance and fight against Apprentice Osterkilgr, kill him until aprox. 40% health.
7. When you have the information, kill him!

Since the Legion pre-expansion patch you can just buy a Soft Foam Sword from Jepetto Joybuzz to easily complete this quest, without performing any frustrating workaround.

As a level 110 naked with res sickness my punch was still killing him immediately. As a holy paladin I put down consecration and one tick of damage took him to about 40% health which instantly triggered the quest completion. So perhaps try some sort of weak DoT or AoE if you have one...

I got naked on my Level 92 Resto Paladin, and after trying lots of things, including my fishing pole. I used a G91 Landshark, and it brought him down to the 40% needed immediately! Yeah!

As a 110 warrior I found that if I just use spell reflect, it got me credit for "beating him" after two of his own fireblasts.

If you're too high level to get the 'beat him down' part and you are also on the quest "Ebon Blade Prisoners", you can just let one of them beat the apprentice down to get credit once you aggro him.

As Druid go in Guardian Spec and use Talent Brambles. Let him hit you in your back (he will rarely hit you).

There is a way for high level Paladins to do it and its the following.

-Remove your artifact weapon
-Remove any Buffs you have
- Go Retri and Spec "Holy Wrath" Talent
-Jump off the staircase to get some damage (just a bit is enough)
-Buff yourself with Wisdom

You will slowly start gaining hp. Once you are only missing ~20k HP cancel wisdom and use Holy Wrath.
It will deal double damage of the Hp you are missing so it will deal a max of 40k.

This is very hard to complete on a high level as any damage (even naked punches) are enough to kill Apprentice Osterkilgr. As a level 110 Paladin I tried everything, but even with res sickness, knock on damage and being in holy spec - nothing prevailed!

Soft Foam Sword unfortunately no longer works either.

I luckily found another player on that quest (opposing faction and low level). I took aggro using Hand of Reckoning and let the lower level character beat him down to 40% - taking aggro when I could pop the spell. As he reached 40% the quest completed. Done!

Pop a message in general, award a little gold for that players time - my friend easily got her kill this way.

I did it on 110 after the BFA Pre-Patch (8.0.1) with the heirloom trinket "touch of the void" (Touch of the Void/touch-of-the-void&bonus=0). You need to equip the trinket, aggro the questmob and attack him with something that is doing no damage (e.g. a stun or interrupt), otherwise the Tendrils will not attack the questmob.

The Bone Witch in Njorndar Village has asked you to beat information out of Apprentice Osterkilgr concerning what Dr. Terrible is truly up to.

You are then to slay the apprentice.

Description

Deep in the bowels of The Underhalls to the northeast, a mad scientist known as Dr. Terrible is up to something befitting his name.

The doctor has been given dispensation by the Lich King to perform experiments upon the vargul -- the vrykul who fall in battle and are found unworthy, and then turned into Scourge.

We must put an end to his work, but my auguries have been unable to find him. He does, however, have an assistant.

Beat the information out of his apprentice, and then dispose of the body.
