This is one of the new daily fishing quests found outside Shattrath city by Silmyr lake.The quest itself takes place in Nagrand, I used the lake by Sunspring Post.

Took me all of 5 casts to catch the quest mob with 375 base fishing, +20 pole and +75 lure for good measure.

Treasure bag contained 2g and some change, 4 sharpened fishing hooks (+100 fishing for 10 mins) and a sharks tooth.

Just got lucky and got both http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34836 and http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34834 on my first turnin of this quest. The fishing line adds +3 fishing to a rod.

It's worth mentioning here, that it only seems to be the lakes in nagrand that you can get the quest item from - I spent 10 minutes fishing at windyreed village and didn't get the quest item drop in 30 successful catches, moved to the lake by the Throne of Elements and caught it on my third try.

Have only been able to get World's Largest Mudfish from Sunspring Lake. Once on my second cast there and once on my 8th.

Have not had any luck catching the quest fish in any other location in Nagrand with 20+ "catches" per location.

So, over 45 minutes so far by throne of elements, no quest fish. This is becoming.. irksome. Seems to be purely luck based. One bit of advice though, use a lure. Even at 375+20 fishing you'll lose half to three quarters of your casts otherwise. I've tossed my line out a couple hundred times by now.

Unless you catch your target fast, this quest isn't worth the time involved. That's disappointing, I'd hoped for something decent for fishing.

I stand notably corrected. I got an Ancient Coin, which turned out to mean I got about 31g for completing one quest. Not bad, still took too long though.

Doing this with a +100 lure at the same skill, using the same pole, gave me no "fish got away" messages.

I've been able to do this quest with 425 fishing. 300 base, the +25 horde only fishing pole and a +100 lure. Almost half the fish get away though.

Some quite extensive testing on PTRs showed that the World's Largest Mudfish could only be caught from Lake Sunspring and Skysong Lake. Further, the bobber actually has to land where the lake is called Sunspring or Skysong: Sometimes it looks like you are fishing from the correct lake, but you are actually fishing in "Nagrand" or "Garadar". Both lakes currently require an effective fishing skill of 395 to cast, 490 to stop get-aways.(##RESPBREAK##)16##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

High base fishing skill is not really required... i got 272 base skill, +25 fishing pole, +2 gloves and +100 lure

Caught in 10+ casts in Skysong Lake, just north of Garadar of Nagrand (Horde Town). Easy quest.

I must have gotten really unlucky, because I kid you not, it took me 73 successful casts to get this quest item to drop. I was at the point where I thought the quest was bugged and was going to abandon as soon as my lure ran out (the 3rd one I used btw). My buddy got his on his 8th cast.

Used the lake near Thorne of Elements, 337 fishing, +20 pole and +100 lure. Kept getting 'Fish Got Away' for about the first 10 casts then bam caught it on 12th cast. I was afraid 337 base fishing would not be enough for Nagrand but was proven wrong.

*Recently found out you can only get the pet Croc from the daily Crocolisks in The City, which sadly I did not get but I did get Recipe: Captain Rumsey's Lager.

First time this daily quest appeared on Lightbringer, with 500 buffed Fishing skill I managed to eventually get the quest item in Skysong Lake after fishing up:

This quest seems entirely luck based. Sometimes you will get him on the first cast, sometimes you will be fishing for literally 45 minutes (yes, even if you are fishing in the correct spot).

Was able to do the quest with only 280 fishing, 20+ from pole and 100+ from bait = 400 fishing. Got plenty of "your fish got away" but I still managed to fish this one up within 5 minutes using only 1 bait.

I got some coin, a couple of new fishing hooks and a broken spyglass.

This quest is defenately does not worth your efford and time! I spent 5 +100lures with my pole with +25.
I fished at both places Sunspring and Skysong Lake but hey come on! only other fishes came to my bait. This is ridiculous! You can earn much more gold by killing orges at nagrand if you want to be there:)

Trust me other fishing quests takes 3-4minutes max but this one...must be joke

I have a base fishing 400 (375+25 pole) and get 'fish got away' messages in nagarand... fortunatly the daily fishing quests give almost unlimited supply of +100 lures.

Yes, you need to be in one of the 2 lakes, none of the rivers count.

I use the 'fishing buddy' addon, which tracks casts and catch percentages... while on the quest, I usualy catch it by the 30th cast, usualy about 5-8 minutes..

if you went through more then 1 lure and didn't catch it... you either forgot to actually accept the quest, were not in the right zone, or you were not catching anything because of a low skill. I've done every one of the fishing quests at least once so far, this one about 6 times, and it's never taken me more then 1 lure.

Also.. the regular mudfish, and the bluefish are keeping my guild stocked with +20 agil/spirit and +23 spell damage/+20 spirit buff foods.

One of the easiest Dailys in the game, requires no killing, almost no travel, and since both lakes are near a guarded area, Garadar or the Consortium post, almost no risk of PVP death.

Requires 395 skill to cast, 490 to stop get aways as per El's Extreme Anglin'.
Learn from my mistakes and make sure the zone you're in says "Lake Sunspring" or "Lake Skysong" otherwise you won't get your quest item.

I have 310 in fishingskill i use Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 and used a sharpened fish hook(+100) got it on my first try.

Fished in Skysong lake for 15min. Nothing. And yes it said "Skysong Lake" above my minimap.

Went to "Sunspring Lake", got it on the second cast. YMMV

Took me about 24 successful catches to complete the quest. I was fishing in Lake Sunspring with 430-ish skill. Almost all the fish I caught while doing it were mudfish or bluefish though, so it wasn't a total waste. I had quite a few get away though, prompting me to nickname this quest "The One That Got Away Repeatedly."

moved to the lake by the Throne of Elements and caught it on my third try.

I spent about 5 minutes at the elemental plateau and didn't get anything. Then on my first cast caught it at Throne of Elements.

BTW make sure that it says the name of the lake in the little box above your map. Even if you are fishing in that body of water, but not actually in that part of the zone, you won't catch it.

did it with skill 330 fishing pole+20 and +100 lure ,at "lake skysong" , first i was doing it for 40 min and no luck , then i noticed that i was 5 cm wrong...so i moved closer to lake and got it on 2 trow.
Got 6g 53s and 4 hook, and spun truesilver fishing line.

Managed this quest with 298 fishing skill, a +25 fishing pole, and +100 lures. It was a difficult task. People with less than 300 fishing are strongly urged to pass on this quest.

I highly recommend using a waterwalking potion and actually standing ON a lake to do this. I cast about 40 times from Ganadar into Skysong and didn't get it. I'm a shaman so I threw up waterwalking and walked into the middle of it, got the fish 4th try. I think that the location (over your minimap) has to have "lake" in it for you to get this guy!

This one certainly can get away from you.

It took me a total of 71 casts to finally catch this one.

Well worth it imo since I wasnt capped on fishing at the time and got about 6 skill levels.

I agree with waterwalking. I used a waterwalking potion on my Warrior and with 300 fishing +20 with Seth's pole and +100 lure I got him on about the 10th cast.

About the easiest way to do this one other than waterwalking, go to the throne of elements and stand out in the shallow water, if you don't get it in 5 casts, move just a bit left or right, 5 more casts. Usually, if i don't get it right away, a little relocation and I get it on the next cast.

I just did this Quest and caught the Big One on the first cast, in Nagrand, like the other postings say at 33.3, 54.9. But that is not all. When I turned in the Quest and got the Bag of Fishing Treasures, the contains were far better then everyone else has post. In fact I almost didn't do the Quest because of the posted items received. I received the follow goodies in my bag, well worth the Quest.

After patch 3.0.2, the drop rate on nearly all of the fishing dailies is 100%. You also get a regular fish in addition to the quest fish. It does not apply to Shrimpin' Ain't Easy, but is true of the 4 single-fish quests.

Well it's not still occuring now at least. Doing this daily in the *exact* same spot I did it successfully pre-patch, and now, 8 mins into my second lure, I still have no World's Largest Mudfish.

before you could catch it by fishing anywhere in Nagrand.
not anymore.
i caught over 100 fishes by just fishing anywhere.
then i moved over to a school of mudfish and caught it on first try.

I may be way off the mark here but it looks like after 3.0.8 probably to get over the old crafty exploitation (maybe code was too complex to undo so adding more might have been easier) While you are on a fishing daily you can only catch the daily fish in the area for that daily. It is no longer 1st cast either. At first you may get nothing atall and blame addons but when you get the daily fish and hand in you can fish as normal. I found this out in Terokar while doing the Blackfin Darter daily, I thought it was addons but had a conversation with another player with different addons, both of us disabling and re enabling but having the same problem. We both had however caught the daily fish after a few casts and returned to getting nothing. He then tried fishing out of Terokar with success and I handed in the daily and was able to fish as normal. It dawned on me that this may be to override this exploitation as it was linked to daily for the zone ie a city for crocs.

Edit, looks like they now gone back to how these were in the beginning now after the 2 problematic changes.

it took about 15 catches to get the daily. They might have made it harder to do, but I just got a grey item 'Ancient Coin' worth 25g and some fishing hooks. gold buff ftw!

Just to confirm what others have said:

You need to be in the subzone "Skysong Lake" not just fishing from Skysong Lake.

It appears that this quest can no longer be completed in the Sunspring Village lake.

Despite all of your confusions, as of patch 3.0.8 they have used objects in the Nagrand lakes (similar to schools of fish) called "Pure Water". I am not sure if it is a very rare drop rate for the World's Largest Mudfish without fishing in this school, but it is a 100% drop rate if you fish in the "Pure Water". These are used for farming motes of water, which are now used with this daily.

Fished up the World's Largest Mudfish on the 20th cast in the Skysong Lake subzone.

Clearly, a) the fish is no longer caught on the 1st cast, and b) it is not required that one fish in any sort of pool.

The quest description and quest objective contradict each other. This is extremely confusing. At some point I will test to see if you can fish it out of either location, but for now, I'm headed to Nagrand.

Got it today, started with 301 fishing, added a +75 lure, got him on the cast that landed me 304 skill. Land on the south side of the throne of elements, walk south into the shallow water until you reach the edge. Your minimap label will read "Skysong Lake." Cast, retrieve, repeat.

Just completed this quest. lvl 230 +100lure. stood on the bank where the map name says "sunspring post" and fished from a "pure water" pool. Got it second cast after trying every "mudfish" school in the lake.

Managed to catch it with a +20 Fishing Pole, a +100 lure and 290 fish skill (Total 410) in my 15th cast to the side of the Throne of elements.

420 base skill plus pole and bauble buffs...started fishing Skysong Lake right by Garadar caught the following:

Barbed Gill Trout x21
Figluster's Mudfish x6
Curious Crate x1

Got impatient, so I moved up by the Throne of Elements, first cast caught a Barbed Gill Trout, second cast caught a Figluster's Mudfish and the World's Largest Mudfish.

Throne of Elements is key I think.

Completely agree with wdtrap. Was fishing in both lakes for about 1 hour each and finally followed his advice and got it within 6 casts after moving near the throne of elements. I made sure that I was still in Skysong lake though and not actually at the throne of elements as per the minimap.

I just caught it today and no you do not need a very high fishing skill level i did it with 365 .. there was a post on here that said you needed 400+ just wanted to clarify.

I caught it @ the lake behind Garadar. Took about 20 - 30 casts

Just done this, took me 49 casts in sky song lake with 450 fishing
(560 with fishing cap, pole & fishing cap lure)
It can take awhile but stick with it :)

I did it at 57, 27 had to fight some of the water guys in order to do the quest. I did it at fishing level 17 and ended it at level 177.

I HIGHLY suggest that you avoid the pools until you get the quest fish because I fished 100+ times without catching it, spending over half an hour. But I caught the mudfish within a couple minutes when I left the pools.

this quest is really lame that drop rate of the quest fish can vary from 1 to maybe 100+ casts
comparing to similar quest that catches baby crocolisk that usually caught at 20 casts at most
and all northrend ones usually nothing more than 20 casts

but yea.. that's fishing...

I know it varies and its all luck but right now my fishing is maxxed (450) plus i have a pole with +30 fishing plus +3 fishing enchant plus a +75 lure that last 10 minutes.... I'm on my 3rd lure and still nothing :( So don't think you'll always get it on ur 5th or 10th time.

Update... finally got it about 1/2 way thru the 4th lure so you may have to have some patience for this one. Good luck.

I stood on the banks of Lake Sunspring long enough to go from fishing lvl 374 to lvl 382 before I finished the quest. so it took about 96 casts before I landed it. No you dont need a school just be where it says Lake Sunspring.

I have a +30 pole but no lure have patience everyone this one takes a while

With 280 fishing, +25 pole, +5 hat and +75 lure in Lake Sunspring I got:

1x Empty Rum Bottle
3x Sickly Fish
5x Barbed Gill Trout
2x Tangled Fishing Line
5x Weeds

5x Driftwood
5x Icefin Bluefish
6x Figluster's Mudfish

Then I lost my patience and went to bed, logging out on the spot. Just logged back on, stood on the exact same spot, no lure but same rod and hat. Got it on my first try. Meh.

I've been doing Outland dailies for a while now, and today I got this as the fishing quest. I've done it before, but for some reason, I've spent 40 minutes fishing and still have not gotten the damn fish to drop. My skill is maxed at 450, and using a nice pole/lure, so I haven't had any fish getting away on me.

On that note, it's also the first time I've attempted fishing it up from Skysong Lake (yes, I'm making sure it says so on my mini-map). I've always used Sunspring Post. So, I head down to Sunspring Lake and got it on my 5th catch. Bad luck today? Or... maybe Skysong Lake just doesn't like me.

Just wanted to add a note. I've seen comments here saying you can only get it at Skysong. I just got mine after five casts in Lake Sunspring. I don't suggest trying a random smaller lake. I did that for 15 minutes and finally moved here.

I had been fishing in the mudfish pools for about 50 casts then I figured that i'd try and fish in open water, sunspring lake, and I got the worlds largest mudfish on my third cast. Please dont make the same mistake I did, it will save you a big headache.

I was in the area, and wanted to check out these daily fishing quests. I started fishing in that lake, but it seems like i had to move to Nagrand to get it. I got it on the 5th throw, and my first bag ever contained this:

Just under 7 gold
Sharpened Fish Hook x6
and a Shadow Pearl.

If Wowhead's right, Shadow Pearl is more rare than baby croc, and personally, I want a baby croc more than this pearl :(

Don't get too thrown off if it takes more that a few casts to catch this fish. It only has a 2% drop rate, which is about 1 out of 50 casts. I have 450 fishing skill, a jeweled fishing pole (+30 skill), and fished up 19 barbed gill trout, 18 figluster's mudfish, 7 Icefin Bluefish and an Inscribed Scrollcase out of Skysong Lake before I caught the world's largest mudfish.

Got this with a 217 fishing skill. Leveled up to 220. Used a Sharpened Fishing Hook to add +100. Also used Water Walking to fish out of bit on the water with my Shaman.

Ended up getting Figluster's Mudfish x3, Icefin Bluefish x 3, Barbed Gill Trout x3, Weeds x1, Tangled Fishing Line x5, Tattered Cloth x1, Sickly Fish x2, Driftwood x1 and World's Largest Mudfish x1.

so at 300-308 skill with pole giving +20, with no lure, with +75 x1 and +100 x1 lures got:

12 sickly fish

12 icefin bluefish
16 tangled fishing line
27 barbed gill trout
6 weeds
11 driftwood

1 enormous barbed gill trout

finally world's largest mudfish

in the end caught at 30 skill with just the pole.

Seems not possible to catch anymore. Have been fishing for 20minutes with:

1. Kalu'ak Fishing Pole +30 and enchant on it +2
2. 400 fishing
3. +100 lure

After 82casts I gave up because probably blizzard caught them all or it is bugged.

I don't think the quest requires a specific fishing skill. I fished it with 218 skill, +20 fishing pole and +75 lure, at the first cast in Sunspring Lake.

Don't try to catch this fish in the Mudfish pools. I must've spent over 30 minutes going from pool to pool, and then followed someone's suggestion and fished directly south of the Throne of the Elementals in Skysong Lake. Lo and behold I got it on the second cast.

Maybe it's possible to get it from the pools, but I wouldn't recommend trying.

Was using water walking as DK in middle of Lake, caught nothing over 3 expired lures (that's half an hour of yawning).

Decided to get rid of water walking and fish from the shore. Caught it 2nd cast.

Just completed again at Skysong Lake. You must make sure that your minimap SAYS Skysong Lake and NOT Nagrand.

Tested on May 23 2011, you do not need to be standing where your minimap says the lake location. I was standing in Garandar just north of the inn using 329 Fishing, a +30 pole and a +100 bobber. Caught it on the 3rd cast.

Took me a long time (by my standards) to fish up the quest item. I went from 223 fishing skill to 234 before I finally got it, well over 50 casts or more. Spent about 30~min. roughly fishing for it. Make sure you're in Skysong Lake area near Throne of the Elements.. I had no success anywhere else in the Nagrand lakes.

I used fishing poll (+20skill), sharpened fishing hook (+100skill), and that's it.

Seriously infuriating unless the RNG has your name on it... 5 different spots, 50 casts each and finally fish out a couple of pure water nodes after the Huge Spotted Feltail, it drops, two casts after node disappeared... Definitely need luck on your side.

Caught today at 262 fishing on first drop. Location 53.50 Sunspring Lake. Seems like everything else in WoW, drops are RANDOM and sometimes you get lucky. NO lures used with Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole. Hope this helps dispel any myths :)

Took me forever even with 525 fishing. (They don't called it "The One that Got Away" for nothing!) Caught him at Sunspring Lake, NOT in a pool as I had initially thought, but in open water.

Took me about 45 mins. and I caught these along the way:

I signed in specifically to say just how absolutely ridiculous this quest is. It took me 45 minutes with 525 Fishing + 110 (Jeweled Rod + Hat). First started with pools then got fed up and popped some water-walking elixirs and fished on the open water North of Garadar. Thank Thrall I never have to do this meta ever, ever, ever again.

It's funny cause I thought the quest said that I could catch it on the same lake, so after 40 casts and as much raised in gold and xp (good that he was a trainer), I decided to check on here. I went and tried Skettis Lake for another 20 or so but nothing. Then I saw the post on Crystalsong, Nargrand (58,24), and on my third cast; whammmo!

Patch 4.3 did this and caught it at 136 fishing in Nagrand, so fishing level required might be 70, or might not have a requirement, used a fishing pole with +3 fishing and no bait.

After fishing Sunspring post with no luck. All i caught was 43 Barbed Gill Trout, 25 Icefin Bluefish, and 16 Figluster's Mudfish, I started researching and the best place I have found was Skysong Lake. I am a Shammy so I used Waterwalking walked to the middle of the lake, cast and caught on my first cast! Skysong Lake is located just under Throne of the Elements 59.13, 24.77 Oh and I picked up the daily and wasn't able to complete until the next day * today* so if you didn't get to complete it on the day you picked up that daily, it does work for the following day(s) as long as you have the quest.

The daily is bugged, it isn't available right now. This is the last achievement I need for the Outland fishing achievement, but after checking every single day for about 3 weeks, I started wondering why the daily is never up.

Opened a ticket, and Blizzard confirmed they are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it. But no word on when it will actually be resolved.

So in the meantime, no fishing achievement for me =(

Just wanted to post this since I came to this page several times wondering if anyone else was having the same issue and didn't see a single post. I'm on Zuluhed-US, if that helps.

I went to Skysong Lake, and used the Elixir of Water Walking like others here suggested. It didn't help me catch the fish I was looking for. I did stay by the lake, and looked for Mudfish Schools along the shore. Fished in one until it disappeared, then stayed an extra 2 or 3 casts before the quest fish came up.

Unless you need this quest for the achievement, I highly recommend skipping this when it is up. By far the most asinine quest in the entire game. Max level fishing plus a hat, pole and lure and still no catch after over 2 friggin hours and finally gave up. Of course, Blizzard always makes sure this is the daily most every day knowing how ridiculous it is. A daily quest should not be the cause of this frustration

This daily quest never popped, and it was the only one I needed for the Old Man Barlo fishing achievement. I checked every day for months, starting back in March and it never popped.

Opened a ticket about it and they said it was a known bug, so I stopped checking for it all summer.

After 5.0.4, I thought maybe they fixed it with the patch, but still nothing. Opened another ticket about it, and the next day when I checked, the quest popped and I was able to get my achievement.

So if anyone else was having this problem, it looks like its been fixed so its safe to go ahead and start looking for it again. Happy fishing! =)

* Do not be in a raid groupe. You wont catch the quest loot then.
* Look next to minimap. If its says: Skysong Lake, then you are at the right place.

As a Level 90 Pandaren Monk with 600 fishing skill, I was unable to catch the "World's Largest Mudfish" at Silmyr Lake as the quest describes. I attempted 100 casts with no luck. I decided to head back over to the old spot at Lake Skysong in Nagrand, and caught it on the first cast. I hope this prevents others from making the same mistake I made by wasting time at Silmyr.

I started this quest, flew to the nearest water in Nagrand, made 13 casts before checking here. Saw the tip about Skysong Lake. Flew to Skysong and found a nice little island south from the Throne of Elements where no Elementals would bother me. I got the World's Largest MudfishWorld's Largest Mudfish on my second cast with Leve 483 Fishing and a Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole which gives +20. No Lures, no beer, no hats, just my skill and the rod, 2 casts in Skysong Lake.

As people said, go to Skysong Lake in Nagrand. On your map, it is the lake north of the Horde town of Garadar. Find yourself a spot where you won't be attacked by water elementals. For Alliance, also stay away from Garadar. I went to the north shore.

DO NOT fish in a school, just open water.

This may sound obvious, but you have to have enough skill to actually catch fish in this lake. If you are only catching gray junk, it will take you forever. I was catching about 1/2 gray junk w/ 200 skill plus 100 add-on skill. I got the quest fish on about the 5th or 6th time I caught a real fish.

One easy way to get higher skill is to first complete the quest to get Seth's fishing pole, from Seth (little boy) in Lower City Shattrath. An easy, if slightly time-consuming, quest. Definitely use a lure as well.

RNG is RNG but good lord over 200 casts at Skysong Lake, ensuring I was fishing in the lake with the proper zone name above my minimap.. Tried all around the lake at every angle!

Finally moved to Sunspring Lake where there is 2 docks to fish off of to ensure you're really fishing deep into the lake, and got it in 3 casts!

Helpful info: get as deep into the middle of the lake (whichever lake you choose) after ensuring the proper zone above your minimap. Particularly easier to do so at Sunspring Lake.

Went to the middle of Lake Sunspring caught it in 5 casts, my fishing is maxed and I used a +100 fishing lure, had the lucky hat on and I got my sweet Dragon Fishing Pole, but until I figured I'd go in the middle I was fishing in a ton of different spots in that lake didn't get anything for at least a half hour lol

OK, this is silly, but I tried 89 casts at the Sunspring Lake pier, 12 casts on the small island in Skysong Lake and then thought, "Back in Vanilla we used to be able to do this pretty easily at about 62, 35 on the Garadar side of Skysong Lake."

3rd cast. I don't mean to imply anything causal here, but keep that spot in mind. In the old days, we never went anywhere else and it still seems capable of delivering the prize. No guarantees, of course.

For those wondering what is the lowest possible fishing skill required to complete this quest, I thought I'd go and find out.

I started with my level 100 DK (without the fishing profession learned). I went to see Old Man Barlo and asked him to grant me the powers of fishing. With my level 1 skill I headed over to Skysong Lake in Nagrand. 64 fishing skills later I caught my "World's Largest Mudfish".

This is my bit of evidence proving that you don't need a high fishing skill (just a bit of patience) to complete this quest.

Fished about 50 casts in mudfish pools all around Nagrand; accidentally cast into "open water" (not a school) in Skysong Lake and pulled up the world's largest mudfish. Not sure if this was luck or indicative of a possible strategy....

It having been so long since I did the Outland dailies, I had forgotten the nuances of this quest. As is posted by timski, the important factor is to be standing at a position on the map that is labeled Sunspring Lake or Skysong Lake in Nagrand (Outland). I forgot this and spent 10 minutes fishing mudfish pools and the open water on the shore immediately to the north of Garadar (57.09, 32.15 to 58.41, 33.74), what I caught was everything but the World's Largest Mudfish.

What I caught was:

11 x Figluster's Mudfish
9 x Barbed Gill Trout
7 x Icefin Bluefish
2 x Mote of Water

I then checked Wowhead, read timski's post, moved to the shore west and north of Garadar where the map is labeled Skysong Lake (54.49, 29.63) and there caught the World's Largest Mudfish on my second cast.

Fishing skill 700, no pole, no bait or lures.
