Cordnates: 79.1, 81.4
What to do: down the stairs to the bottom floor. Make sure to avoid ghouls. They will die when they touch your Shining Light buff. It's better to avoid them then take damage. They also daze you if your not careful. You have 10 minutes to get down and back up.

when doing the quest, i found it easier to walk (\ key) so that the blinding light would ward off the undead without them attacking you first. this is handy for warlocks and hunters alike as usaly out pets are on defensive and any damage taken will send them attacking, so when they get hit they run after the burning undead, and aggro more mobs. its nothing big, just your pet may die, but its annoying none the less.

The light buff does not protect you against the Dragonflayers! I did not read it that well and just ran through. I almost died, but popped a potion. lol. hunters put your pet on passive since you can not let the ghouls take damage. It is a breeze.

Alright, if you're like me and have no idea how to find the Sacred Artifact, all you have to do, once you have the bubble-shield thing:

1) Head back to the room behind you
2) Go down the stairs
3) Go down the other stairs
4) Run through the room with ghouls & zombies and whatever (because of the bubble, gas will appear and they will explode/implode)
5) Go to the end of the room, and loot the "Sacred Artifact" (sword standing up)

And then you're done :D Look at the Images for clarification.

Mobs don't give any experience so don't bother trying to AOE grind them. Though if you could it'd be an amazing spot.

yet again another awesome quest i just found from the x-pac lol.. i never did this on my 80 because the first time i lvled on the other side of north rend there are so many cool and unique quests im so glad they brought to the table this x-pac

Maybe it's just me, but doing this quest this time around as a DK seemed wrong somehow. With my Pally, at least the whole light thing made sense, but as a DK I'd think it would be a rather painful experience XD

What a nice easy quest...

when you take this quest all you have to do is to go downstairs walk freely cuz the ghouls WONT attack you...

take stairs down then left the staff or whatever it is is straight ahead :)

Luckly the quest item remains in your inventory even failing the quest. So, don't drop the quest nor the item, go back to Ares and accept the quest one more time. You'll be able to complete it then.

DO NOT abandon if you grabbed the item but time runs out, abandoning will cause you to lose the quest item. Simply pick up the quest again after the timer runs out.

Did this as an L70 Paladin using the Hand of Protection and charging through.

The way back is easy after you have the item, whether or not you're a Paladin: hop up the bones near the platform, and it'll let you up on the ledge. Follow the ledge all the way back to the first room, and you'll get to avoid much of the aggro in that second area entirely. From there, just drop down and run to the steps; if there's more than one of you, you do it one at a time you can heal the second person as they run.

Worst case scenario, do a single deathrun to make it there, then you can run back safely along the wall.

Took us just a few moments, made it back before the timer even ran out!

I noticed how slow the ghouls were moving so I made a run for it. I was at 60-70% HP when I got to the sword and used Shadowmeld. When the Shadowmeld cooldown ended, I ran all the way up to Ares and used Shadowmeld again. :D

Worked just fine for me. I talked to Ares, he gave me his buff, and I went and got the artifact. L70 pally. I was watching my Argent Crusade rep on turnin. So low for such an important item.

I can't help but think everytime I die on this quest, since he put's the buff on himself rather than me why doesn't he get his lazy ass down those stairs and get it himself?

It's easy enough to get around the bug if you have some way of distracting the ghouls, like a pet, or totem or even just an aoe stun to let you get ahead of most of the pack. As a shaman i just ran halway there, dropped an earth elemental totem, got the item and ran back, I had to stop and heal once though.

HI all!
I did this as a lvl 72 shadow priest :D just put your power word: shield and renew and just spam them until you get the sword.....then simply on the way back use dispersion and the shield and your home and dry :D i did it without loosing any health.

ok if it is such a trouble u had better
avoid that quest. there are thousands of other
quests. the only reason to do this quest is
this : the sacred artifact is actually a blade,not
a commom blade. that blade is the sword of scarlet
commander mograine and after his death it somehow
passed to his son darion mograine(leader of knights
of the ebon blade,death knights)Yes this blade
is the legendary Ashbringer. if u want further search
study the light of the dawn quest of death knight class
as well as the story of the ashbringer.

The quest is no longer bugged - not sure if 4.06 fixed it, or a later hotfix.

Not sure if someone else mentioned it, but make sure to kill at least one devouring maggot amongst all those undead while you are getting the Sacred Artifact, as a step towards completing the Pest Control achievement.

I didn't have any problems with bugs on this quest HOWEVER:

"The light" will not protect you against the normal mobs in the hallways-the big "Viking" looking guys. I had to fight them all the way down and back. It only protects against the undead downstairs.

When you get downstairs, just walk through the undead. You will take some damage. Don't get hung up on the bones and other stuff on the floor. At the bottom of the stairs go left and all the way to the back. Click on the artifact (in the beam of light) and get out of there as quick as you can.

Is this quest still available? I am trying to get Argent Crusade rep on my level 76 draenai pally so I sought this quest out. I found Ares, but he wasn't offering a quest.

It's a very easy Quest~! You get the protective globe around you and run down the 2 flights of stairs n go through the water to the sword, grab it and retrace your steps to the giver. It is a little unnerving to see all the ghosts when yer standing on the stairs lookin at em but, believe it, the globe is invulnerable to em and they just poof out when they touch the darn thing (Too funny). The only problems are the guards. The globe aggroes em but, if ya have any DPS or poisons at all, they go down pretty easy. BTW don't forget you're on a timer! I did this in 2 min 16 seconds but, I was having extra fun running thru the ghosts a bunch of times. Shuda probably abandoned this just before I got the complete, so I could do it again. It's that much fun! To do a Quest that isn't bugged when it has multi-targets, is kind of a relief too! Peace!

If Ares will not offer you this quest even though you seem to meet the level requirements, take note: you must complete a few of the quests in Valgarde before this quest is available. It becomes available when you are given the quest to retrieve the harpoon manual from the vaults (The Path to Payback).

A little help for those not paying too much attention (like me)...

Don't be fooled when you activate the sword and the quest text turns from grey to green (signaling a complete quest). After you get the sword, the timer disappears but it is still active. You need to run back to the quest giver (corpse of Ares) and turn it in before the now invisible timer hits 10 minutes. Otherwise, the quest fails and you need to repeat it.

Ares the Oathbound in the Utgarde Catacombs wants you to recover the Sacred Artifact.

This is a timed quest.

Description

<Ares gasps for air as he tries to speak.>

I am an envoy of the Argent Crusade, charged with a sacred duty.

Our forces were decimated in the Plaguelands. By the light of dawn, the artifact was cleansed and made pure once more. So many perished in the wake of its redemption.

There is still a chance... still time.

The artifact was hurled into the den of the fallen, far below us. Guarded by the unmerciful dead.
