Great way to do this quest without killing anything:

Use the crackers on the tree itself, when the bats come down to investigate they bug and evade in the tree and leave Guano behind! They eventually reset and you can repeat with the same bat!

I found it easy to find the bats if you have Shadows enabled, since the bats hover in the tree line, not down by the spiders. Just throw the firecracker on the shadow of the bat and down they come.

It wasn't working for me initially, until I learned to target the firecrackers on the bats' shadows. Even though they don't appear to be directly under the bats as the quest text suggests, this seemed to work the most reliably.

If you're a mage, you can polymorph the bats, grab the quest item, then move on to the next tree.

Whatever method you use, it's a boring and tedious quest. I've enjoyed all the Northrend quests so far, but I can't say I particularly liked this one. It's made worse by the 'poo ninjas', who will happily run in and steal your guano whilst you are engaging a bat. - I mean, come on, being a ninja is pretty low, but to ninja bat poo takes a special kind of low life.

It also needs to be said that someone at Blizzard clearly has as a bit of an issue. Another task that involves a player running around picking up poo? And apparently there's another 'poo picking' quest in the Borean Tundra. All this on top of the other Outlands and Azeroth 'Poo-picking' quests we had to do whilst levelling up?

Are they trying to tell us something? Maybe there's some sort of subtle hint here somewhere? Else one of their devs has a seriously dodgy fetish.

If you have Fear, do this: Toss a firecracker at the base of a tree which has bats above it. After the bat comes down to your green targeting symbol, run up to it. Fear the bat, then right click on your target symbol. Runaway from the bat if you don't want to fight it. They don't chase you very far.

However, for something so simple, this is very time consuming. I spent 40 minutes trying to get the bats down. After a while, I was on a mission. :) So, you might want to consider by-passing this one until they do some updating.

All these tips about how to get the guano without killing the mobs are great, but it's annoying for others. Because they only drop the guano once. So if people before you used these techniques you first have to kill the bats (if they're not too high), then wait for them to respawn and then finally you can pick the guano.

They are not too hard, so don't just think about yourself and just kill them.

Note that as of 17th Nov, some bats are bugged and won't come down. Placement of the firecrackers isn't critical so if the bats won't come the fire time simply find another tree.

I got lucky for this. The bat was evade bugged but still dropping... poop. It was stuck in the tree and I could repeatedly got it to drop from the same bat.

I was wasting a lot of time looking for bats, when I just started chucking the firecrackers at random every time the cooldown was up. Got bat poop about one in three times, and was a lot quicker than running around actually looking for them.

For a rogue its super easy, just use the firecrackers below the bat, stealth before it gets down and since we can sap beasts now, sap it and grab the poop. (Just watch out for the spyders!) Easy and fast! :)

There is a tree at 29.8, 17.8 with many bats. Can just stand there and use the firecrackers next to yourself with relatively no trouble from the spiders. Hope this helps!

Very Annoying Quest indeed. If you happen to have a character that can stun, once the guano drops, run in, stun the bat, grab the guano, and run out. Makes life MUCH easier!

This quest will be changed in the new patch:"now only requires 10 Darkclaw Guano, down from 15. Also, only the character that scared the bat, or their party, may now loot the guano."

I agree wholeheartedly on the poo quests being overdone by Blizzard....I mean seriously guys! No one likes to play with feces! And Y R the bats protecting the poo piles!

I was able to take a quick way out as a hunter.

Put you pet away and call the bat. Once it is aggro feign death and it will fly back up. Get the poo and use readiness or wait for another feign. Rinse and repeat. I got it done in about 5-10 min off the same bat.

Very similar tactic to what Twankies recommended.

I have noticed that the bats that drop the guano are the ones that do not have Riven Widow Cocoons below them, be sure to avoid those and this quest should be a breeze.

This quest can be easy as cake, and a moist cake too!
If done right you can actually get all the Darkclaw Guano from one single bat!
Simply use the firecrackers underneath a tree, as I'm doin' on the picture.
Then put a curse, debuff or shoot the bat. ( To enter combat, i used Faerie Fire.)
Then simply run away from it, for about 5 seconds until you'll leave combat, and the bat will fly up again!
I did this for most of the quest items.

Long-time reader/user, first time poster. Been playing WoW for four years now and have seen (and mostly finished) a lot of quests. This quest was particularly lame and inspired me to create a WoWHead account simply to express my aggravation. Some quests along the way have been funny and/or entertaining, some have been mind-numbing, most have been forgettable. This quest induced me to click "Abandon" after calling down the first bat and collecting the turd. Execrable quest, whoever crapped this one out.

Yes, very frustrating. I was able to get them to come down using my thrown weapon and sometimes got an extra guano out of another bat if I threw another firecracker when he joined the fight. But there are all sorts of other things that aggravate you and kill you and when you get back sometimes the guano is gone. Too frustrating and not worth it at all. AAARRRGGHHH!

The trees near south road (around 30.21) are more safer without annoying spiders around.

Put your pet more away and set him on stay. You walk alone to the trees with bats. Put the firecrackers down, and step a bit back. You shall see one bat fly down.
Wait for poo drop, then walk to the bat. If you get aggo, do feign Death and bat fly up again.
Now you can get the poo.
Reply this again until you're done, or if no one goes down, go to another tree along the south road.

Good luck for hunters.
Another classes need freeze or knite, to get poo first (because ninja risk) then kill bat or walk away.

I discovered important points:
- you don't need to place firecrackers below the tree. You can do it at the field between trees with bats. At least one shall take a look.
- if you don't kill bats, it's "used" for poo drop. They wont come again. The new respawned bat can come for another poo drop. With feign death, you must walk more around for unused bats. That is small problem. Killing is perhaps better and it gives also extra xp for you.
- very slight chance there is no poo drop.

Easy and Lazy quest....

Location: 30,20

Strategy:
* Place Feknut's Firecrackers at bottom of any tree, wait for the bat, kill it then
* Loot Darkclaw Guano

Alternate (if you don't want to fight bat)
* Druid/Rogue - as bat flies down go into stealth (bat will fly away)
* Hunter - feign death
* NightElf - Shadowmeld (heck even if you have attracted bat of course this is a Night Elf feign death)

Bats are easy to kill and there are very few mobs around to pull.
If you're a skinner, the bats usually turn into normal borean leather (only a few scraps).

As a Night Elf, Druid skinner - this was a heavenly quest :)

For all you people complaining about the scatological nature of this quest -- who are you to deny the scat fetishists their moments of in-game pleasure? From what I've seen in trade chat it's obvious there are a lot of people in WoW who are full of crap, like to spread crap and most likely play in it too. Different strokes for different folks. I say we ought to give Blizzard a tip of the hat for fair and tolerant quest writing.

Go to 31.5 81.7.
Clear the mobs out from under a tree.
Stand back, drop the firecracker at the bottom of the tree: bat craps then sniffs at it just to see what's up with his poo.
Pull the bat away from his crap, kill the bat, loot the crap.
Drop another cracker under the tree, repeat until there are no more bats. Find a new tree, repeat. Simple as pie. Maybe not as tasty as the crap pie some people seem to enjoy but pie nonetheless.

As of patch 3.08, this quest has been slightly changed: It now only requires 10 Darkclaw Guano and also only the character that scared the bat, or their party, may now loot the guano.

As of 3.0.8--at least, that's when I first tried the quest--the bats return to the pile of poo when you lose aggro, but do not go back up the tree, meaning you have to kill them anyway.

Found a bug that made this veeery easy!

1. throw cracker kill 1 bat and loot the poo
2. stand on the dead bat and throw crackers around
3.?( okey the bug is that the bat go down where you throw the cracker but the poo come to where last poo was!)
4.profit

Very easy step by step:
-Head to Rivenwood (almost "29, 16")
-Move your camera so that you will be able to see the flying bats
-Go under them and shoot the firecracker on the ground
-They will come down and Spawn an object, they will attack you, and you will find a green item (like the one shown in the pics) on the ground!

This quest isn't as annoying as everyone makes out imo. It took me 10mins tops to complete it, you only need 10 now instead of the intial 20 though. All you do, is dynimate the bottom of the trees where the bats are flying and go click the green aura to pick them up.

Easy and quick quest imo. Though like mentioned before i think it has now changed a little.

Anyone notice a NPC pet that attacks the bats with you? I saw orange numbers appearing above the target and my combat log said "Feknut's Firecrackers Bunny Melee hit Darkclaw Bat 323 physical"

Going for loremaster on my 80 alts, if you throw down the firecracker right next to your character and spam right click the spot, you should be able to loot it as it spawns and run away quick enough to not aggro the bat, making this quest doable in a minute or two.

There is a one very easy method to finish it.

Just throw the dinamite in the front of Your charatcter and immediately shift click the guano, before the bat lands and run. I have'nt killed a single bat during this quest:)

If it was not for contributions from players this would be an "abandon" quest. I went to the area expecting to target the bats with the firecrackers not the ground around the tree. When I could not figure it out, I came here. Thank you contributors who helped me get through this quest by providing guidance on how to actually complete this quest. As someone suggested, I cleared the area around the tree and then walked away from the first one because I was slow in figuring out that the small green glowing thing on the ground was the poo. It wasn't until my gold cog showed that I could pick something up that I figured this out. Also, since the bats come down one at a time, it was relatively simple to take them on so did not need to run away or use a spell. I attacked the web casings after and got some fairly good loot and exp. from what spawned. So long story short: Clear the area around a tree with bats, target the ground around the tree from a distance.. wait until you see the green glow on the ground... kill the bat... pick up the green glowing poo. It was not my experience to have to target a new area - the bats around the tree came to where I targeted the first one. Once those were done I moved to a new tree.

Agreed, and if you stand at 34:20 you can work between two trees that have bats and get them all without having to bother with any other beasts, unless you want to do some skinning or something :) I solo'ed this at lvl 73 with my Balance Druid and took less than 10 mins. Would have been hella annoying to have to collect 20 though...

It seems like every time I come to do this quest on an alt there's always someone else doing it. And whenever I use the firecracker they take my quest item while I'm busy with the bat. It's not so bad if the bat is far away, you can usually loot it before it gets down to you, but if I get interrupted by an attack they just swoop in and grab my poop. That's MY poop, not their's. MY POOP.

Horrible quest. I don't think I've ever spent less than 20 minutes doing it.

I don't know if they change the quest recently, but it's no longer long and boring (well, it's not a good quest but it's not that bad.

Just go under a tree, fire your cracker anywere on the ground, wait 2 sec after the bat came over the target, kill it, get the poo.

That's it, only 10 times to go.

Actually, you do not even need to wait for the bat to get the guano.

Just did this quest in five minutes. I simply put the firecrackers under a bat, each bat is distinct, so you can do three by moving around the same tree. The bat comes down to the firecrackers, and poops on them leaving a green circle on the ground. Left click on the circle to collect the guano.

Fly from tree to tree.

The darkclaw bats hang out in the Rivenwood to the north, but I'm not taking a step off of this platform unless it's to go home!

But you... you could get it for me! Yes? Pretty please?!!!

Here, take these firecrackers. My thinking is that if you drop 'em underneath the bats, the guano will be scared right out of them!
