Scarlet Monastery is often referred to as the Forlorn Cloiser, and is found in Tirisfal Glades. The instance for this quest is SM Graveyard. You find the pumpkin on the left side where one of the rare mobs usually spawn, before entering the tomb to the last boss of Graveyard. See the submitted screenshot for more info.

Weird, this year the commoners didn't offer me the quest to visit the Matron, and the Matron didn't offer me this quest (even after I did the quests to put out the fires and kill the horseman in town)...

Perhaps because I did those quests last year. But I thought all the holiday quests are reset each year...

Seems that if someone shares this with you, then you can join the quest although you did not complete the "Put out the Fires" quest in Brill. I walked into SM for this event for the first time and summoned 3 times after someone shared The Headless Horseman quest.

Afterwards, I went to Brill and put out the fires, but did not get The Headless Horseman quest because I had already completed it. T'was kinda confusing to me at first.

Seems the prereq for this is the quest to stop the fires (either one). Just got it after putting out fires.

This has happened to me. I did the quest last year, and after putting out the fires at Goldshire I wasn't offered this one. It might be because I did the quest last year? Worked fine on my alt though.

The Headless Horseman is to be found inside the Graveyard of Scarlet Monastery during the Hallow's End period, which lasts two weeks. He's a three-phased boss, which is able to be killed with four average players.

Summoning
Inside the Graveyard, an altar will appear, with an pumpkin upon it. Behind it, is a pile of dirt. By speaking to the pumpkin, you can get a candle, which delivered to the dirtpile behind, will summon the boss. He'll soar out, fly about a bit, and then land, charging the summoner. This will consume a Daily Quest, and can only be done once every two hours, I believe. Summoning him requires level 65.

Stage one
Tank time. Nothing exciting happens. The tank tanks, DPS does DPS, and the healer heals.
As soon as he hits 1%, his head will pop off, and land at a random location. If this head doesn't get damaged down to about 65% before his body hits 100% again, you have to fight through phase one again.

Stage two
Ok, head reaches 65%, flies back to his body, and you're fighting again. This time, he has a new ability. Conflagrate. It'll do 10% damage for 5 ticks on a random target. It also does 10% damage to anyone close to that target, so try to move away quickly.
Once he hits 1%, his head pops off again, so try to hit it down to 30%.

Stage three
When the head hits 30%, he becomes whole again, and you're fighting agin. This time, he gets the ability to summon four helpful pumpkin guys. If you're quick, they should only have time to spawn before the Headless Horseman is dead. If not, try to kill the horseman anyway.
The pumpkins don't do very much damage, but can disrupt the healer. The Headless Horseman will summon four adds every now-and-then, while conflagrating and hitting the tank as usual. At 1% his head flies off, and you've got a floating skull. Kill it quickly, and party. Now go and loot the various drops he has.

The Looting
The Headless Horseman usually drops anything between two to four items, maybe even five.
Two items that are guaranteed to appear, are both a Broom and any of the three kinds of rings.
- Rings:
Witches Band
Ring of Ghoulish Delight
The Horseman's Signet Ring
- Brooms:
Magic Broom, 60% land speed
Swift Magic Broom, 100% land speed
Flying Broom, 60%, Air speed
Swift Flying Broom, 280%, Air speed
The Horseman's Reins, now a flying and land mount!
- Other:
Hallowed Helm
The Horseman's Helm
Sinister Squashling
The Horseman's Blade

He also drops Weighted Jack-'O-Lantern, Pumpkins you can throw on top of allied heads.

Minimum level to summon horseman is 75 now. Found out the hard way as I'm only 73.

2009 Horseman is now level 80, but is not as tough as direbrew. A 3-man tank/healer/dps shouldn't have too much trouble.

I Dunno why this was down rated i was able to three man with a 70 healer myself as a tank and a blue geared DPS 80. I'm fairly sure I could solo if I used Seal of Light. It is a extremely easy fight.

Note that although you can get and complete this quest at level 65, you will NOT be able to do the one-time followup quest ("Call the Headless Horseman") despite being given the candle to do so. I believe leaving this quest at 65 instead of changing to 75 was an oversight that will probably be patched.

Shame about the level requirements... it would be great if this was a tiered fight like BG's ie 20-29, 30-39 etc... then everyone could have fun... now that land mounts are at level 30... it would be great to be able to get a broom around that level.... are the brooms restricted as to where you can fly them?

well... i have done it last year dailies were NO problem then.. but this year (2009) the daily just doesen't appear ive done all pre q and daily at Goldshire and still no blue ! over the pumpkin ... EXTREMELY annoying.
calling a GM now and i will brief you guys more when i get a decent answer to this question!

you can go this quest as lvl.65+ its just the quest after http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11392 which is repeatable that requires lvl.75. To all of you who did it last year and cant do it now I have a theory, maybe this quest isnt repeatable only a one time only and you stay with the Call of the Headless Horseman quest.

You can also tag along for the HH if you are under lvl.75.

This quest is only available right after the headless horseman is slain in the town.
That, or killing the Matron resets her so she'll have to witness the horseman's flames die and him being whacked.

Whichever is right though, this might be the problem if you can't get the quest and HAVEN'T done it before.

I did that but still it bugged for me and some few others i got answer from GM but it got purged here so.. As said it worked fine last year so i knew how to friggin do it. Guess not enough ppl had the prob yet the ! sign still wouldnt appear to me until i talked to the GM wich took around 72 hrs atleast i checked every day but, not even the GM could explain what happened he said though it could have something to do with that i did it last year.. Anyways at the 3rd day it finally reseted!

someone gave me minus again xD lol ye ill need a confirmation for this it looks like.. good that's it not a common thing but anyways ill have to wait until next year and make sure i remember the name of whoever gets this weird bug or whatever it is. I didn't say everyone gets it.. I said it because if u get that prob call a GM fixed it for me atleast :/

Please level this up...top post is for 2008 or something. You have to be level 89 to get in now, and the loot is 470 stuff!

Note: As of Mists of Pandaria, you must use the dungeon finder and enter "The Headless Horseman" to kill this guy.

It is still a three-stage fight (see Queggy's description below for general idea). Note that when he gets to about 1%, he becomes immune and starts walking around, looking for his head. In phase 3, he will toss four Pulsing Pumpkins, which sprout Pumpkin Fiends after a bit. I ignored them and focused on HH, which worked ok.

Find the Headless Horseman's pumpkin Shrine.

Description

The Headless Horseman is driven away, but he will return as long as Hallow's End looms. <name>, end our misery, and the insane lament of the Horseman. Face him when he is joined with his head, and destroy it!

He rests in the Forlorn Cloister of the Scarlet Monastery, in Tirisfal Glades. Find his pumpkin shrine and say this:

Horseman, rise
Your time is nigh
You felt death once
Now, know demise!

Go, <name>. And may the Light go with you.
