Ok idk wat the fuck this is but even if ur not balance use spells...i was moonfireing the guy for 3k crits, dispell the posions (Mana Drain) And remove the curse ( + 100%) damage...as feral i just rooted + nuked him in about 20 seconds.

Strategy:

This is the third of three mini boss fights in this quest, each involving a different aspect of your druid abilities. (This particular fight involves your ability to root and cast spells)

Click the statue and the NPC will spawn directly in front, like with the other you will have a few seconds to back up and prepare your roots and initial abolish poison. Remember that your abolish poison ticks and dispells future poisons, so keep that in mind you can completely avoid the viper sting he throws at you. He occasionally curses you so be aware of that too.

DO NOT attempt to use melee combat, and take advantage of barksin. Preempt your roots to make sure that he doesnt come within melee range, and use your wrath/moonfire to burn him down as quickly as possible. They do almost 400% damage (all your druid spells).

This is the first of 3 mini bosses you need to fight, one for each aspect of druid combat. This is the "tanking" part of it.

I only fought this guys twice because of the server restart, and my quest item was bugged and they rolled the server back. I beat it with no problem both times. Here is how you do it (I was feral specced, but if you are resto/moonkin you should have no problem you just need to put on your feral gear).

Armor is big factor in this because this part in the chain tests your bear form skills. You need to hop into bear form and enrage as soon as you click the statue. You will have about 5-6 seconds so your armor can come back up to normal, and you will have som rage to start mauling the guy. Mangle does a ton of damage on him, but if you are not feral specced, spam maul and swipe.

The MOST IMPORTANT factor is demoralizing roar which you need spam whenver you have the rage. Wave of birds will pile up on you however in bear form with decent armor and with demo shout, the do hardly any damage. AT 20% or near there you need to bash him (preemptive) so you can interrupt his massive starfire. I actually got hit by it both times but I have 10.5k/14k hits when he did it so I survived both times I fought him.

Putted all my healing gear on (since I got no balance gear) and that gave me a lot more mana so I could cast longer and nuke him quite easily =) Remember to Abolish Poison/ Remove Curse. Did this easy by casting wrath and kept him rooted as a feral specced Druid.

At 15-10%, he hits you with "Death's Hammer," a short stun. He then goes into a berserk mode and starts doing much more damage in melee range. Make sure to catch him in roots before this happens.

I recommend using Starfire over Wrath for this encounter since the less-frequent hits give you a lesser chance to break your roots. Nature's Grasp also comes in handy.

An easier way would be bringing along a mage (party). As feral I rooted, healed and de-poison while the mage was nuking him. My mage said he got an 8k arcane blast or something hit on the mob. He died in less than a minute (or around there).

I'll add balance druid comments, did 2 starfires crit with 15k dmg each then more crit with moon fire, I'd say just stick with moonfire and starfires, mob seems to have negative resistance to those, lol. Easy fight. I teamed up with a feral druid for all 3 parts, she just demo tank and maim first and second with me blasting from far, then this fight was my turn to shine. :D If don't have balance druid friends, bring a pocket mage.

I know when I did it a few weeks ago instead of my Starfires hiting for around 1.9k they were hiting for about 9k. I did trinket and get a 20k Starfire crit, really makes you happy. But the general strategy is to always keep him rooted no matter what, and just hammer him with a Starfire, less spells cast, less amount of times you will have to reapply roots.

Wow! This guy is tricky. It's true you need to keep him rooted and just pelt him with balance spells as they do way more damage than normal. I had a hard time my first attempt - he drained all my mana and my roots were not sticky long enough. His melee hits are exceptionally heavy.

I ended up getting a resto druid pal (who is nearing his 5k gold) to help just in case I needed a mid-cast roots or an abolish poison. Went down quickly!

The rank 1 root works just as well as the rank 7. Also your innervate gets reset if you die and if you die your automatically ported alive at the graveyard. As a feral druid only no skills in balance I was able to do this with a 7500 mana pool. Also dont wait to cast your abolish poison just cast it when it wears off. Also be sure to just kill the adds all around the alter before you try this. You will need all the room to run around.

He does seem to take about 5x damage from Arcane spells. I was getting Starfire hits in the 8-9000 range, and one crit for 18,011.

If you are Balance spec, don't use Moonkin form though. You'll need to decurse and de-poison yourself a few times.

And don't use Wrath. Starfire and Moonfire are the way to go.

Did this with help from an arcane mage. Small problem; if you take this route, keep in mind that mage arcane spells cast very fast and damage breaks the roots. I basically wound up spamming roots and still had to throw a brez to the mage.

This is the fight where moonkin shine. Root the guy, drop your treants, pop a trinket, and watch the 10k normal starfires fly. His curse makes you take DOUBLE melee damage so keep him rooted at all costs.

I just solo'd this in my resto gear as a Feral, 0/47/14. Died once, Very challenging. Kept root up at all times, abolish poison when it's down, decurse when you get cursed and starfire spam. Low to mid 3k range with no crits, and thorns did about 130ish damage when he got to close. Lots of fun.

as a feral i had a hard time with this one. Took me 4 tries. Luckily you dont have to spirit rez when you die so it doesnt matter. First time i simply didnt know what i was doing and i died pretty fast. 2nd time he kept resisting my roots. Resisted about 4-5 times. Not good. 3rd try i was about to beat him and one of those dang birds respawned on my and finished me off. 4th time i used wrath instead of starfire..WAY easier.

A tip for those low on spell damage but good for anyone as its a huge dps increase (i only had a quag's eye and my end of dreams from back at 60 along 2 pieces of high warlord gear)

Is to use the netherwing ally trinket and summon him while fighting, it does very respectable damage and can take some hits while you nuke if you want it to.

Since I'm feral, I did it in bear form, with the help of a healadin. At first I tried the root and nuke method. Even with some healing gear giving 7500 mana, and with heals from the healadin, it didn't take long to get killed. My roots would only hold for a couple of seconds. No question I was rusty casting spells, and I didn't get far enough away from the mob so I could cast roots while it ran to me.

But I simply lacked the patience to get the technique down, so I switched to tanking gear (14K HP, 24K armor) and slowly, ever so slowly, beat the mob down. It wasn't a strain so much as it took time; each mangle would only reduce the mob's health by 1%. The healadin had to pot a couple of times, but my health never even went down to 50%. Just clear the area of mobs and fight the npc right at the statue.

I found it much easier to just wrath and entangle and use my Commander Trinket to at revered to summon my whelp with him and myself took under 30 secs to kill him and I am a feral druid and did this in my dps suit.

That little whelp does a boat load of damage to him. Also another thing that helps is put abolish poison on macro.

Makes it easier to get the mana drain off.

Take a hunter, druid, or shaman with you. The mob is Nature and Arcane weak, Serpent Sting ticks for 1k, Arcane shots hit for 3k+ and my combat log doesn't say what the damage from my Snake Trap was, but I can guess it was decent. Also he can't be silenced.

Killed him solo in tanking gear. Just keep in mind, that u need to decurse asap, and try to do it between attacks.

Simple fight as a Moonkin.

Clear area, stand on small jutting out hill (I did anyway) Treats almost as soon as he appears, and roots in place. Starfire 3-4 times and maybe a wrath, watch your HP. Easy peasy, dies quickly. Enjoy the trinket!

I got to this quest as an alt, newly to level 70, feral spec with -0- spell damage gear. It was HARD. Starfires hit for under 4k, he resists roots far too often, and my mana pool was under 6k. After about 10 attempts, I managed to get him down, but it was as much luck as anything else. People in my situation should either bring a friend, gear up a little first, or be prepared to lose to the random number generator a lot (i.e. 2 root resists in a row).

Moonfire, Starfire, Starfire. (Second starfire was a 20619 crit. Yes, 20k+)

@ Kapamarou : all mobs have a map pointing to their location on Wowhead, i personally feel that doing the same for quests would be much less coherent overall as it wouldn't necessarily be applicable.
In this case, you just have to follow the link for the essence to see what mob drops it and then the mob, you would get to the map showing where it is : http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=22992

Did this as resto with pretty crappy gear, got help from a MS warr (pretty good geared), based on the comments here I asked him to go tank gear.
Was seriously a piece of cake, the warr didn't even need a full stack LB to outheal the incoming damage and the Hawk went down very very quick, I'm guessing I would have had some problems soloing it though.

As a feral druid with pretty bad Boomkin gear (+500spelldmg) Managed to solo it.

Tip #1 KILL ALL THOSE ANNOYING BIRDS NEAR SHRINE (Start killing the ones closest to shrine then kill yourself a path to run away from boss along you'll have to kill 5-8 birds atleast)
Tip #2 KEEP ABOLISH POISON UP, Can't stress that enough (Otherwise say goodbye to your mana)
Tip #3 Root him, move away from him, starfire him.
Tip #4 If your cursed decurse yourself
Tip #5 Barkskin is your friend

With these 5 tips you should be able to solo him even with some really bad boomkin gear.

As a feral, I put on my crappy healing kit (+536 healing, 9% crit, +236 damage, 6K health, wearing mostly cloth). I died twice trying it solo. He was maybe at 90% health both times. I just couldn't keep him rooted for more than a second or two. Third time I brought along a Pally and a Mage. I died again within seconds. They barely finished him off (Pally was at 20% health). Rez'd from the Pally and loot. Hope I never have to see him again.

Feral. First I tried it in melee gear (0 spell, 5k mana), but even with Innervate and mana pot I run out of juice very quickly, got him down to maybe 50%. After a short trip to Shattrath to get oomkin gear (625 spell, 10k mana) killed the boss rather easily with Wrath spam.

Feral Geared/Talented Strat: As fresh 70, my stats - 6k mana, +77 spell (neglible) dmg

Preparation: Set up a new "1 to =" hotkey panel with: Moonfire, Wrath, Starfire, Root, Lifebloom, Rejuvenation, Abolish Poison, and Remove Curse. Go into interface options and check "AutoSelf Cast" on, if its not already (This is very important, no fuddling with targets when decursing/healing self.) Bring a mana pot or 2. Clear the open area (NW quadrant) by bird statue of ostriches, buff up and drink up.
Battle: Activate the statue and stand a good 20-30 yards away, target the npc before it turns Attackable, and tap the Root key to root him asap. Nuke away, I think Starfire is preferred despite pushback risk. If your root is getting stale, go with wrath instead and refresh moonfire.
Always keep it rooted, and your ~20+ yd distance. Do not ever try to nuke toe-to-toe. He is immune to Cyclone.
Keep an eye on his Throws, they mana-drain you, tap Abolish Poison immediately. Pre-emptively casting Abolish Poison is useful too. He will often pause mid-pursuit to throw/cast, take this opportunity to re-root.
While you are moving, use your instacasts as needed. (moonfire refresh, decurse, HoT if you're dying)
Mana pot as soon as you've eaten enough mana, this gives the 2 min CD a chance to be done if you are in a panic at the end. (Then Innvervate next of course.)

With 6k mana I was able to beat on 3rd try using 1 lowbie mana pot. First 2 tries were "learning", had some unlucky root breaks, and I hadn't cleared kiting room. Very doable solo as a new feral 70 with NO boomkin gear!

As feral I tried 4, 5 times in my crap healing set (~ +630 heal & ~+320 damage) and still got owned.

Once I was able to down him to around 50% hp, but still is hard as his melee hits are insane with the curse debuff he puts on you. I would probably need to watch and react better and fight more defensively with roots and moonfire at hand. (It is hard with feral mindset.)

Somehow healbot addon didn't allow to purge his curse / poison off me so it was quite annoying to fight him. I didn't though that I should alt-key for decurse, lol

Just for the sake of this quest I respeced Balance and while with doubts still downed him on my first try with the same "^&*!" healing gear.

As feral with healing set it is pretty much depending what kind of gear you have. If you have BG/PvP heal set (S1, S2, S3) available you should have no problems. If you have crap heal /spell damage it may be doable if you are patient and know how "balance" work.

If you don't have a clue and good gear (healing) better respec Balance and enjoy that part of a druid for a while.

First try I went in with Balance gear but feral spec, and got comprehensively owned. Specc'ed balance I took him down pretty easily though, with about 550 spelldamage and 7k health, without even using Treants. Key talents to have are Balance of Power for the +spellhit (which increases the lasting ability of your Roots), Insect Swarm and all the dps boosts you can pack in.

He hits pretty hard, so staying at range is important, but the key thing is a high-octane offense. The more damage spells you cast, the more damage he takes, so if you pause even with roots up the mana drain poison starts to take its toll.

This was by far the easiest encounter from the 3 spirites(as a balance druid). Just keep him rooted, put an abolish poison on you and nuke him with starfire moonfire and (if specced) insect swarm. Got him down in a few seconds with a 24k starfire crit.

Did this right now in my PvP healing gear with 1137 +healing (giving 385 spell damage) and 205 resillience with 9.3k hp .... Was really easy to be honest, just rooted him, wrath > moonfire, rinse and repeat, threw abolish poison and remove curse when affected and took me no time at all doing around 4k wrath and 3k moonfire.. easy as pie :D

i soloed it just some minutes ago as a feral drood in feral gear (s1+accessories).
Bear form and nuke it:D when u are cursed just decurse it and use a healing potion or hs(from apexis shards) or barkskin and heal yourself:)
It's realy easy if u know what to do.

Well I will tell you now the First one is the worst, for it was the only one I needed help for, as a full Balance Druid, with mixed gear! The second was very easy solo'd and the Third even easier.

All I did was have a dps friend help me on the 1st one, and kept switching between the two roars in bear form.

2nd one, had to use cyclone just to heal myself "ONCE!!!" and only as a precautionary measure!!! Moonkin Form, and Wrathed him to death!

3rd one, was this easy moonkin form, and Wrath!!!! no heals was dead very quickly, do not even think my time on my 2nd trinket buff was finished to be honest!!!

Was very easy quest to do as a Balance Druid, the only problem I had was the first part(Eagle's Essence).

Ok everything is already said but let me share my expirience. I did him on 3rd try, feral spec with some spelldmg/healing gear on me (320 spell dmg 520 healing) solo! So you dont need any help its a skill quest not a gear. There is only 1 trick here... dont let him in melee range. If he comes to you he will hit you 3-4k and you die fast. I had trouble first 2 times coz he resisted roots a lot, but 3rd time he didnt resist any. So i just root, dispell curse & abolish poison... starfire, wrath... repeat. Make sure you are always at 25-30 yards from him so you have time for new root when he breaks it and dispell. Its not a time race... he doest do anything special if you are not in melee with him. And ofc clear some area from annoying birds :)

I attacked him, but then i noticed i only had moonfire in my skillbar.
Just root him and keep Moonfire up and wait till it dies.

Easy as pie, only had to use innervate, had 404 spelldamage xD.

You don't have to be balance in any, way, shape or form to do this.

I was full feral so i used half tanking gear half pvp gear giving me 10.7k health, 6.8k mana & 31 spell damage.

Wasn't too difficult. Cleared a small area (killed about 4 birds). Summoned him, kept him constantly rooted, kept abolish poison up, decursed when needed, starfired constantly. Used 1 super mana option and an innervate. He died with me at about 9k health, and 1.5k mana.

Feral, wearing healing gear. Did it easily on my first try.

Follow this priority list:

(1) Root. Interrupt whatever else you're doing to reapply root.
(2) Get to max range. This is to ensure that you never get hit during (1).
(3) Abolish Poison, or lose your mana.
(4) Decurse. Not crucial if you do (1) and (2) well (I never got hit), but better safe than sorry.
(5) Nuke.
(6) Collect Essence of the Hawk and turn it in for nifty trinket. :)

Alternative strategy - Kiting.

I couldn't keep him rooted. My Entangle kept getting resisted or breaking on the very first moonfire. I'm also a Feral Druid and didn't feel like respec'ing for this one.

So I cleared out the adds around the cliff. I then moonfired and then kited him in cat form... I came out of cat to recast moonfire and to clear off the poison. I also used Feral Fairie Fire each time to came off of cooldown so he didn't reset.

I didn't dispel the curse (no point!). He was at 45% by the time I reached the end of my 'path'. I then entangled, hit a pot, and circled around him and kited him back to his statue.

He died almost on top of the statue.

First off, it took me a second to clue in that he's on a floating island. It's there, the coords (45,93) are correct.

Took a Fury warrior friend with me. Very simple, just let him take the damage, healed when needed, and moonfire/starfire the rest of the time. Took maybe a minute to take him down. Warrior said that the hits he was dealing would have made it hard solo, so obviously keep him rooted if you are alone. Very important. Otherwise, quite easy if you have any help at all frankly.

I also had a lot of trouble as a feral druid, and died 4 times. Keeping him rooted is key because he hits hard, but my roots got resisted quite a bit. I found that by the time he was rooted, I abolished the poison, and got back into max range I only had time for one or two spells before roots broke and had to start the cycle over. Mana was an issue.

I had to recruit a resto/balance guildie friend. He made it look easy. I kept the mob rooted and the both of us decursed/free of poisons while my friend nuked him down in about 30 seconds.

Feral druid, 7/8 T6 when I went to do this, didn't bother with any spell casting, took a while, but never had to swap out and heal or anything, killed it pretty easily.

So you can melee this, with enough gear to just bull through it... and yes, up until recently, I never bothered with the fast flight form.

For this I was feral (kitty) spec but tossed on my rather mediocre resto set (no boomkin set). Cast roots, then Wrath and Moonfire sort of randomly as I felt like it. Kept him rooted, used a few hots and Abolish Poison. Didn't bother with decurse at all. Killed him quickly enough with almost full health and plenty of mana to spare. I'd rate this as easier than the Falcon one.

Similar to apfhex's post, I tried this boss as feral spec'd, but in my tanking gear. Got destroyed 3-4 times before getting annoyed and grabbing some healing gear lying around in the bank, which gave me about 900 healing, 390 spell dmg. That left me with about 7K health & 10K mana in regular caster form.

Returned to boss and royally kicked his ass on first attempt. Kept him rooted with lvl 1 Roots and spammed Starfire from max range, critting for over 8K at least a couple times.

Remember to keep Lifebloom and Abolish Poison up as often as possible. I didn't even bother with Innervate or Barkskin (woulda prob made the fight even easier), and had over 50% health and just under 50% mana at the end.

Just turned 70, full feral spec, wearing only spelldamage questitems.

Cleared 4 mobs for some runningspace.

Used rank 4 roots, spammed max rank wrath and always had a moonfire debuff up.

As long as you root a lot, you wont need to move at all. Downrank roots and spam it and its a breeze.

I'm fully feral, apart from enough resto to get omen of clarity (think my mana pool's about 4K, with a tiny % of spell crit), but managed to solo this with a little rummaging on the auction house-
1 Bringer of death -about 25-30G on my server- you can always d/e it if you don't want it after this quest!
1 Adept's elixir from a guild-mate alchemist
1 Elixir of Draenic Wisdom- about 2-3G, Auction house
1 Crunchy Serpent- again, from guild

With these buffs, I got quite respectable mana regen, an increase of about 2K to my mana pool, a 10% spell crit, my feeble wraths were hitting at 2.5-3k- and my Moonfire was ticking at 900.Used Yaak's strategy (above).

Just thought I'd list these out for any other ferals that don't normally touch spell/mana stuff, and needed a quick reference.

Painful as resto druid with 2500 armor.

I tried this the first time doing the casting method, but I died with him at 2% because I went oom, with pot and innervate on CD.

I said screw it, and ended up killing him the second try. easily, by just tanking him down and melee'ing him in bear, while wearing full tanking gear. Popped out maybe 3 times to rejuv/regrowth myself. Kept demo roar, faerie fire, and lacerate stack up, and popped frenzied regen near the end. Did not need any help. I was using T4, S2-3, and some Kara gear.

Okay, this was the easiest fight ever. you don't need to buy pots or anything else.

I'm a dreamstate-resto druid, 28/0/33. All i did for this fight was clear some of the surrounding mobs and when i summoned him, i rooted him and used moonfire/wrath/insect swarm.

Keep him rooted because he hits for 2k melee. Also, you may want to abolish poison cause he can viper sting.

I killed this guy so easily it's not even funny. I have 912spelldmg

Did this spec'd fully feral, in feral pvp gear, with a caster mace and offhand. Starfires crit for 8.5k. Died the first couple times getting the strat down, but third try was cake. Keep him rooted, keep Abolish Poison up and decurse when needed. Burn down.

Easily solo'ed at level 80. Boomkin 16.8k armor and 1400 bonus spell power.

This guardian has 50k HP but you should be fine if you can crit reasonably high. For some reason i was critting abnormally high and didn't see any buffs that were not familiar on me. (ie: 19k critical Wrath)

I did pop treants and used barskin but the fight only lasted a few seconds.

Edit: I also received a 13g23s reward at level 80

As of WotLK, all of these quests can be soloed at lvl 80, regardless of spec and very minorly of gear.

I'm full spec resto, nailed the bear-boss easily with wraths, barkskin, and bash to intercept the Starfire.

Wrathed down the second guy; all attacks missed me cause of lvl, so they should miss you too.

Rooted and Starfired third guy. I was critting for 23k, which is about 4x the amount I normaly do. No worries, his 50k goes down easier than 1k.

So all this talk about bringing a friend and speccing properly and strategy is basically out of date at lvl 80. Have fun soloing

I didn't pick up this quest until level 77, at which time I trained for epic flying and got the swift flight form. I'm a tank, so I treated all these mini bosses as such...and this guy keeps you on your toes. I have 16k health in bear form, used regrowth once and had 4k left at the end. For others solo at this level, keep him dotted with lacerate and mangle (remember that lacerate stacks 5x), debuff with ferie fire and demoralizing roar, heal early and you should be alright.

I don't know if these mini-bosses were nerfed in WotLK, but I had no problem with them at all. Just killed all 3 like normal mobs without any tactics.
As for this particular one -- as soon as he started to run at me, I accidentally clicked on Starfall instead of Starfire and he died half-way to me.

And my druid is only level 70 (twink) with a bunch of level 61-70 green/blue gear.

This guy is extremely vulnerable to arcane damage (probably nature dmg also, but I didn't spam wrath), so even if a feral does ff--->mf--->starfire spam, you should be ok. If you don't have a deep mana pool, as ferals won't, wrath isn't mana efficient, so you shouldn't be doing that anyway. I'm balance, but at lvl 76, my starfire hit him for 11k-16k (were not critical strikes, either). Usually, my starfire hits for 2500, so it seems to scale the damage for any spec to do the quest, as long as they use the vulnerabilities of the target to their advantage.

It seems each of these guys in the quest are designed for any spec druid to do, as long as you use your forms properly. If you're balance/resto, you can still do the feral ones (and vice versa), it just requires a little planning.

lol this is cake for a boomkin....45k starfire crits ftw. You would probably be better off just spamming starfire on him regardless of spec.

If you take the time to read the quest (unlike me) you'll noticed that you need to return to Arthorn Windsong when you loot the essence. Do not attempt to use the whistle to call the bird to turn in the quest. He will not have a question mark above his head.

if you're 80 with normal gear and prefer cat form, do it. killled him in less than a minute, just popped berserk and then he was basically dead, maybe lost 5% of my total health in the fight...

Soloed this as a lvl 70 boomkin in heirlooms (shoulders, chest, mainhand mace and trinket). Got killed once but that was because i was careless and let one of the wandering birds aggro on me (should have cleared them before calling the miniboss). When i came back, i started the fight, rooted him and used hurricane and that's it. My ents were on cooldown from the previous fight.

Did this very easy as feral in bear form, got 3 pieces of leveling gear.

Just go for him as you normally would on any elite in bear form, 5x Lacerate, Mangle, Faerie Fire (Feral) (This did about 2k Damage each hit.)
Keep some potions off cd, you might need it, same with Frenzied Reg. and Barkskin.
And just keep the curse off, this worked out pretty good for me, hope it does for other people aswell :).

This used to increase speed in flight forms by 10%. Now as you can see it only reduces mana cost. Shame and a waste of slot.

Easily handled at lvl 70 as boomkin, (with almost 1k spl dmg that is.. ) Dots, trees and wrath = dead 'boss' ..

I believe its solo-able for a 70 druid today, cause im a 70 druid and im i dont have any epics, just wrath greens, and he droped like a bird... i was surprised... he had 50k hp

Just did this in raiding kitty spec with crappy quest gear as a fresh 80 sufficed to say the burst damage of mangle when used with berserk and savage roar and standard rake and rip he def doesnt live long enuf to be a threat to a feral anymore

The last, and strongest, of the spirits spoken of in the Book of the Raven is that of the hawk. It was imprisoned far from Skettis, in a shrine on a remote island southeast of Auchindoun.

I believe this description best matches the island we know as Sorrow Wing Point.

The tablet describes the hawk's guardian as nearly invulnerable to the bird's claws. Forsake physical attacks and call down the fury of the stars to defeat this foe. Do not repeat the hawk's mistake.
