To get Training Gem you need use Order Search inside the cave. The button just will appear when you stay near to gems.

How do you interact with Gatamatos to get him to come with you? I can't find an option to retrieve him.

You have to activate Gatamatos then go into the cave below it and kill Agitated Etherwyrm.
You can get Training Gem by using Order Search near the glass inside of the cave.
When you return you'll have to complete 3 formations.

Currently the formation part of the quest is completely messed up, the Obedient Phalynx don't move into the correct locations to make any of the formations.

Since I am apparently not allowed to submit a support ticket ("submit" button greyed out) about this nonsense, I guess I have to leave the comment here:

Broken.
Bugged.
Busted.

Yesterday I was able to do the quest just fine - the extra action button popped up like it should.
The next day, when the quest reappeared, there is no more extra action button, leaving the quest a bugged mess.

- After talking to Pelodis and grabbing Gatamatos to start the quest, use the ramp down at 55.9, 40.8 (or if you're like me, jump off the edge at 55.1, 42.6) to get to the cave below.

- You don't have to go out of your way to kill mobs - they spawn continually and unless you're stealthed, you'll easily complete your kill objective while doing the gem search.

- To search for gems, use your extra action button when it's lit up.

- Once you're done with your searching and killing, go up the ramp at 56.3, 45.5 to go back up. Click on the lit up Gatamatos on top of one of the small platforms on the left.

- Talk to Pelodis to start your formation training. He will start naming formations - line, box, cross. To complete the formation, click on the white Gatamatos that completes the formation with the other units.

- Click on the Gatamatos on top of the small platform to complete the quest.

So I completed the first two parts of the quests, but for some reason it wasn't reading it while I was gathering up the gems. I gathered them all up but on the quest it still says I'm at 0 gems! Did this happen to anyone else?

If you are on the quest Phalynx Malfunction from Pelodis, then the ability to collect the gems will not work and you cannot complete the WQ.
Finish the Phalynx Malfunction quest and the next 2 quests before taking the WQ, because the 4th and 5th quest in the line (Combat Drills and Laser Location) is also to kill 8 Agitated Etherwyrms and collect 6 gems respectively.

This WQ Have 4 steps:

1. Press on Gatamatos 55 41 Now He will be Your companion.
2. Go to cave 55 42 is under this platform and:
- Kill 8 flying mobs
- Collect 6 Training Gem ( To find and pick them use extra bar spell if is coming bright it means you've found it and just press on it ) This gems are very small on ground line stones.
3. Go to speak with Pelodis 55 41 and now you need to complete formation ( if you press it wrong, nothing will happen )
4. Put back Gatamatos 55 41.

Buggy quest to say the least, first time the button required to search for Gems did not turn up despite having Gatamatos with me, then I returned him (as part of the quest); However, if you return him even if you go and grab him again from outside the gem collection area even if the button does show up (which it did the second time around) it just errors with the message "Requires Gatamatos", even if he's not malfunctioning and you are not in combat it gives that message every time, as it is a world quest you cannot abandon it so that's the reward lost.

You must activate Gatamatos by collecting 3 helpers, 5 armor pieces the barrel of anima and then click on the armor pieces . Once repair done THEN you can get Gatamatos to continue quest-line.

This WQ doesn't seem to work if you have the quest, Phalynx Malfunction incomplete in your log. Not sure how common that would be, but once I dropped this quest Gatamatos behaved as he should using the extra button.

Training Regimen is a World Quest about training a Phalynx breed mechanocat in Bastion. There are 2 key locations: the mechanocat platform and a cave:

You start and finish the quest at the mechanocat platform at Forgefire Outpost at 55, 42. Click on the cat Gatamatos only ONCE. He will jump down and follow you (no whistle provided). In his place there will be a transparent yellow cat form. If you double click on Gatamatos he won't follow you. He will jump off the platform and jump back up.*
Once you pick up Gatamatos, you'll travel a short distance down a slope to a cave at 56, 43. To get to the cave, face Gatamatos' platform and walk to your left. There is a dirt path - turn right on to it and run downhill. There is a rock formation - keep it to your right. Don't go into the temple to your left - it's not the quest area. Continue on the path and you'll come to the cave entrance.
When you are finished killing Agitated Etherwyrm and Gatamatos has dug up 6 gems, exit to the left of the cave and go back up the dirt path. Near Gatamatos' platform you'll see Pelodis. Now he wants you to do Formation Training.
You don't have to go anywhere. The space will fill up with 3 transparent mechanocats. Pick them in the right order. Pelodis will tell you if you picked wrong. Pick again. You can complete this quickly by trial and error, regardless of the "instructions". There are 3 formations.

When done, Pelodis tells you to walk Gatamatos back to his nearby platform.

*You must pick up Gatamatos before you go the cave, only the cat can scratch for gems when you Order Search . If you go to the cave alone, you have to figure out how to return to Gatamatos' platform at Forgefire Post at 55, 42. (Don't go to Nemea's Retreat.) The mini-map won't show you the platform location and there is wavy yellow grass everywhere. But you can watch where players with mechanocats go - since they return to the starting point.

If you die, you'll have a long corpse run. But if Gatamatos dies, he'll rez quickly on the same spot. (You don't have to return to his platform.)

In this ~~incredibly fun~~ quest, if you drop off the top of the mountain to get right tot he entrance, that's bye bye gatamatos, and then you have to run all the way back up to get him. The final step, ~~which is the MOST fun~~ involves you bringing him back to the top and selecting the correct spot in a formation...which sounds easy enough, or would be easy enough if all the other robocats weren't standing in the most bizarre and out-of-formation places they possibly could.

If you're a bit slow like me and you're finding the coordinates to be useless for finding Gatamatos, you have to go way up to the top of the hill (Forgefire Outpost), find the path that leads away from/above the cave.

Never doing that quest again.... Seriously an 8 part world quest? Doesn't Blizzard understand that we're adults now and need to pound through these things like we're taking out the trash? We have jobs now and kids and complaining spouses, no time for this.

(Some helpful info: When looking for the gems, you can only get one gem from each pile of glass, so you need to move to a new pile of glass after getting your first gem. For the formation part, I just kept clicking the yellow guy closest to me and it worked.)

When you actually know what to do, this quest isn't so bad.

It would have been helpful to have been told, when picking up the quest, that the cave was underneath. It's just very poor game design.

Standard game design would be to include some advice about where to go and what to do rather than all this vagueness.

There are so many quests where I need to come to Wowhead to find out what you're actually supposed to do.

The WoW developers really need to up their game on this front for the next expansion. This particular aspect of Shadowlands has been very, very poor.

done. I thought. The first time the wq didn't list the gems, so when it was finished I thought it was just another foul-up. Then it reappeared this time needing the gems. Had no idea what I was supposed to do, so came here. After reading all of these comments, it's not worth it.
