This quest is impossible to solo unless you're a tank(at around 200 ilvl). It takes about 10 minutes to kill this mob as a tank with perfect gameplay. So really, bring a group to do this quest.The mob has 3 abilities(besides melee attacks): a shockwave(frontal cone), a knockback(the range of the ability is short but the knockback itself knocks you about 30-40 yards and a spell that spawns 3 large void zones around your location. Getting hit by those void zones reduces your health pool by a large amount. The mob has about 700k hp.

After a couple frustrating runs with a LFG, phasing and constant deaths trying to reach this quest, we found out that YOU CAN NOT COMPLETE THIS IN A RAID GROUP. Once we switched to party, we got the item after killing the boss again.

This Quest is Bugged Due to Phasing.

Once you find a group:

1. Head to Oribos
2. Go to the Maw.

This will pull you to the leaders phase because for some reason you can't swap the phase for this quest automatically.

Do not run-up to the boss and then use the group finder.
You'll find lots of other people, but they'll be phased once they joined your group. This is not because of warmode on/off.
The reason for this is phasing: Blizzard wants to avoid people PUG-hopping to kill all rares. https://www.wowhead.com/news=319430/lfg-group-finder-world-questing-is-much-harder-due-to-phasing-changes-in-shadowl. Unfortunately, this makes this group quest insanely annoying.

Here's what you should do:
1. play with friends
2. Alternatively, you can create a PUG group, but make sure EVERYBODY goes to Ve'nari or to Oribos or any other rest/no-fight zone. This puts you in the same phase. Then travel with that group to the boss. If someone doesn't listen, let them run back to Ve'nari.... yes, it's annoying.

3. Preparation:
It's a good idea to kill the elite add in front of the boss. If someone gets knocked back during the boss fight, they may face-aggro this mob. It's a rather tough mob and can kill people quickly.

4. Tactics: Tank the boss so it faces away from the group, but be careful with knockbacks. Careful with the knockback: You can be knocked off the platform if the boss faces the open side. If the boss faces the side you can be knocked next to the platform. Most classes need a priest to grip them back up.And if the boss faces inward, you may be knocked far back. If you have the aggro, the boss may reset at this point.

Oh. And don't try to solo the boss unless you're a tankadin or blood dk. If you are, make sure you plan in a good amount of time to kill.
Oh2. and if the other faction tags the mob, it goes grey and won't drop the core for you.

I killed it but was knocked onto the ledge below during the fight. I couldn't get back up to loot it and had to kill myself and run back.
The corpse had despawned by the time I got there and I then discovered that the Colossal Power Core does not get mailed to you, so if this happens, you'll have to kill it again.

I as did many other people tried to pug the quest, but due to the intentional phasing by Blizzard, it's near impossible unless you have a group that are willing to go to Orbus and then meet back up. Fortunately, there are plenty of people doing the quest right now and it wasn't very long before a few people showed up from both factions and I managed to get the kill without a group. I suggest just hanging out in the area until a few people show up, being that so many are currently wanting the kill for the quest. Although the other faction tagged it, the colossus did not gray out for me. Both factions were getting the kill together so it doesn't take long at all. I would also suggest that once you tag the colossus to step back as far as possible if you are a ranged class and you won't take much damage.

Was able to solo it pretty easily as a ilvl 180 BM hunter. Just keeping mend pet up is enough healing for the entire fight and only used Exhilaration as a heal for myself when I got hit by the aoe circles on the platform. Took about 5 minutes and I did it at jailer lv1 so I wouldn't have to worry about other things appearing during the fight.

If the daily quest Feed Your Soul is up, your fully powered up Vengeful Soul can tank the Colossus for you. This way you just need to avoid the mechanics and apply dps. If the Soul dies, another will spawn and take over assuming you don't get killed in the few seconds before that.

Given the general pain of getting this one done, is there any real reason to do so? Is there other content/important quest chains locked behind it? Or is it just a weirdly hard one-off for rep and sygia?

I had this quest, and then it disappeared from my quest list. It's not on my map and no where to be found. I'm unsure what happened.

This needs a) a group finder button b) proper phasing so you can group to do it.
If this is the weekly, do it first day so you can find others at the boss more easily

The best way to do this is to simply go to the boss and wait for others. Everyone will have this quest, if you have WM Off you can even kill him with Ally.

Just watch for his knockback, if you get knocked off the ledge you can't get back on (because Blizz couldn't figure out a knockback with a guy by the edge of the map could do this...). And the core isn't mailed to you. If you have a taunt pull the boss down to you (hopefully wait till he's almost dead). Because you'll never be able to run back in time to get the drop.

What I do is I kill an Outrider near the entrance to Perdition Hold and just ride the mount all the way back to this guy. Half the time when I get there someone is already killing him so I just join in.

I always have some Oil of Ethereal Force on hand in case I aggro some mobs up to the Boss. I can dismount (be sure to do this first), then drink Oil of Ethereal Force and it will drop all aggro like a rogue's vanish.

The issue with this quest now seem to be fixed.
I just killed this boss in a mixed (ally/horde) "non-group" consisting of 4 (or 5? didn't pay too much attention once the fight started) players.

Important though is to keep the boss facing the nearest wall and for the melee fighters to stay right on the rim of the boss's platform with the rock right behind your back.

Since the release of 9.1, this quest is useless, unless you really need 758 Gold (that is your reward). You still have to travel through high-level mobs, dragging them along or killing one after the other, before you even get to the Colossus.

Inside Perdition hold ..... Straight ahead, see the road to the Altar of Domination. Work/mount run your way there. Clear some of the ads. before Pull and set yourself near a wall to not get thrown off.
Had the luxury of a Daily show up nearby Feed Your Soul . Completed this until I got the Vengeful soul, turned out to be a great tank for the Colossus. Soloing this as an Arms warrior, no raid gear so everything helps :)

Description

I have another task for you, Maw Walker. Deep within Perdition Hold, there lurks a menacing mechanization known as the Soulsteel Colossus. It must be destroyed before it wreaks havoc upon us. Travel to the Hold, and then across the bridge into the Altar of Domination. There, casting its vast shadow upon The Maw, you will find the Soulsteel Colossus. Shatter the colossus and bring me its power source as proof of your victory.
