On this quest you control Illidan himself against a full raid of "players" against him, as the final boss of the Black Temple. The fight goes exactly like on the raid, every phase is there, until you get defeated by Maiev.

Pretty creative and fun quest!

This was oddly cathartic as a former BC raider. It was lovely to be able to just go after the healers. Side Note: the raid dies faster once the healers are down ;)

This is pretty much an auto-pilot scenario. Do your best but there are no real success criteria despite Blizzard making you think you need to complete the objectives.

After failing to complete it several times for no apparent reason I did what I always do when the game seems to bug. Dismiss my pet before starting. This included removing my artifact weapon (as a BM hunter it gives you yet another pet). After this change I finally finished the scenario.

Phase 1 - you only need to survive the onslaught. Attack at your whim, but there is no need to try to kill everyone.
Phase 2 - it says the two Flames of Azzinoth must survive, both of mine died. Again, just spam the only action button you have and try to do your job of defending them.
Phase 3 - Kill two warlocks and 25/25 raid members. I did kill the two warlocks and a few others but it is clear that this is also unwinnable as there are non-stop combat resses going out.
Phase 4 - You will get beaten by Maiev. There is no winning. She will trap you. At this point it seemed to bug out for me and ported me out of the instance.

At this point **check your quest log** and see if the quest is ready for turn in at your order hall.

I would love to see an alternate scenario, even a joke like the developers jumping in or voice-over script, "Hey! That's not how the story goes!" or something like that when illidan WINS the fight...

This was the greatest thing ever. The raid team from guild named Uber Town, all wearing mismatched items (one had only one warglaive), "tanks" yelling "Who pulled aggro?", the AFK raider in the back... Loved every second of it.

There seem to be three versions of this quest: this one for players who have killed Illidan in the Black Temple, this one for players who haven't killed him, and this one for demon hunters. It's pretty cool that they acknowledge all three possibilities.

Today, I got my Artifact Knowledge Level 5 and the second I went back into my Class Hall, the quest was up. The last time I got a quest from this series, I had AK Level 3. Hope this will be helpful!

Be Illidan all over again!

After you have completed the quest you can talk to Xe'ra and choose an option to repeat the quest.
Have fun experiencing how it really was for Illidan to be visited by thousands of raid groups ^^

I get that this is supposed to be for fun but it really stretches credibility when you wipe every healer out 20 seconds into the fight and kill 2/3rds of the raid before phase 2 and somehow Illidan still loses.

I think the best part is that you have an ability called "Berserk" that is already on a 15 minute cooldown. Nice to see enrage included.

This was one of the most fun and creative quests I've ever done in this game. As a BC raider it really made me laugh. Especially the gnome with a single warglaive who was trying to get his second.

Just got this quest from order hall, and it did not disappoint. When you get there you get to see a mini cinematic that you should recognize then you get to control Illidan himself. You have 3 abilities, but if your goal is to kill the enemy raid of puns and gnomes just spam your 2 button on your new action bar.

Regardless of how many you kill, you will be put into phase 2 where you put down the warglaives with the goal of the flames of azzinoth to survive. Use your 1 ability eye beam to shoot down some remaining gnomes, and then you will enter phase 3.

Maiev comes out and kicks your butt. Nothing you can do about it, you will be trapped just fight until you are trapped. At this point the quest will complete and you have to exit vehicle on Illidan and then make your way back to your class hall where you get your helmet (840 can proc upgrade)

So, do you get this even if you are a DK/worgen/panda/vanilla race that started in Cata but you went to BT and killed Illidan? Because that wouldn't make sense. I mean it doesn't make sense that those characters can go back in time and kill him to begin with, but that's just a "game thing", it never happened in the story.

If so, I would like Xe'ra to acknowledge Illidan's killers as being only the characters that story-wise would have been able to slay him. So, let's say if you are a DK who went to Black Temple to farm those glaives because it was your only toon at that time that could solo the raid and equip those legendaries she shouldn't give you flak for that.

Anyone else doesn't trust Xe'ra? I just got have a bad feeling about her, she mislead us into thinking that Light's heart needed preparations instead it was us. I don't know but she is all about Illidan being the only being that can save us from the legion, its a bit weird. Also didn't she said we needed a vessel for Illidan's soul? are we the vessel that will carry Illidan's soul? Because we haven't even gotten near into knowing where his body is.

A pretty interesting and hilariously unique quest, to say the least.

In this quest, when witnessing Illidan's memories, it goes back to the Black Temple on the Illidan fight where you play as Illidan fighting a raid of what's supposed to be players, and have actual dialogue. It plays out to the point where you will see the typical person jumping around, that one AFK player, and several statements, such as...

"If the glaive drops, can I have it?"

"I think Johnny is afk..."

"Who pulled aggro?"

"Misdirect the tank!"

"How did I die to that? I was NOWHERE near it!"

Props to Blizzard for making this an amazing quest that perfectly portrays how players in a raid actually act.

This quest, like the other quests in the questchain have practically completely different texts if you're a demon hunter, here's the ending for this one.

"Forgive me, noble soul. I mislead you. Light's Heart was not the vessel that required preparation, it was yours.

You, who sacrificed everything for your world and served your master dutifully until the end. These memories will serve to strengthen your resolve. Look to them when the dark temptation surrounds you and let them grant you the strength to resist and rise against the corrupters. (Blizzard spelled it wrong, not me!)

We will save Illidan and once more you will battle at the side of your master for the fate of all worlds."

I prefer the Demon Hunter version.

If you have a pet active before you start the scenario, it will most likely bug out, so dismiss it.
I killed the entire raid as Illidan and they would just keep rezzing without further progressing the quest. Also the raid shot me during Illidan's and Akama's initial speech which just looked ridicoulus.

The quest bugged hard for me, and I was able to wipe out the entire raid plus hit berserk timer. Once the raid is effectively wiped out, they start rezzing indefinitely, leaving you just barely out of reach of the goal. When you get berserk, you can no longer use the first three abilities, but you get an auto-attack that hits really hard and really fast.

If you're repeatedly being thrown out of the scenario for no apparent reason it's likely because you have DBM (Deadly Boss Mods) running and it's automatically skipping some cut scenes.

You can either disable the addon entirely or change the settings by doing the following:

Type /dbm into chat.
Under the Options tab click General Options then select Blizzard Disable & Hide.
At the bottom there is a drop down menu called Hide in-game cinematics.
Change it to Disable.
Close menu.
Repeat scenario, win.

I don't have DBM installed and still bugged out on this. In Phase 2, my "Survive the Assault" bar never left 0%. After getting ~20 raid members killed, they would res 1-2 more instantly. I "left the vehicle" and then joined again and did not have this problem. Hope this helps someone.

If you beat The Black Temple for the first time right before you do this quest, then it will become bugged and you won't get credit for completing it. You need to abandon the quest and re-accept it in order to do it again to get credit.

So, how do you actually do this? I want to BT, killed everything there, nothing happened. Checked here, and see that it's supposed to be a scenario, but I have no idea how to start it. Abandoned. If I find the questgiver again, I'll try it once more.

Guys, you need to go to the front gate (not the hole in the wall) and if you stand infront of the gate your extra button will appear, you click that to start the scenario.

I was super annoyed at having to go all the way to BT but this quest was actually amazing.

I killed the healers first and tried to wipe the raid but unfortunately they kept getting res'd lol. That was so awesome to play as a boss and try and kill a raid :3

Looks like a lot of people really enjoyed it

I've finished this scenario ~~two three four five six~~ seven times and still have not gotten credit.

EDIT: What a fun and interesting scenario(the first time) that is ruined by a bug that STILL persists. Wont bother anymore

I've had a problem with this quest that I haven't seen anywhere on the forums.
I begin the quest normally, and progress through it without any problems whatsoever. The ending cinematic starts and finishes, as it should. Then, right on schedule, I'm teleported to the front gate of the black temple. But instead of receiving credit for finishing the quest, I'm greeted by Xe'ra, who informs me that I can START the quest whenever I'm ready. I've done the quest, in its' entirety, eight times now, and Xe'ra still isn't giving me credit.

I've tried abandoning the quest and picking it up again, with the same result.

I've noticed a different bug mentioned on the forums concerning this quest, which can be corrected by disabling add-ons. But I never had any add-ons in the first place. And I am being allowed to finish the quest all the way through to the end of the final cinematic. I just can't get credit for it.

As a side note, everything else about this quest is awesome.

Can ANYONE come to my rescue with their great wisdom?

In order to get to the scenario start point, you can port to Shattrath City and then fly on your own mount to the front gates of the Black Temple in Shadowmoon Valley. If you take a taxi from the City, you will end up at the Dark Portal.

People go over the top and read too much into Xe'ra here. He is obviously a zany hippy. He is not saying Illidan is right and you are wrong. He's just saying "love thy enemy" because she's/he's trying to show that Illidan had a complex personality. Nothing more nothing less. When she ends the conversation by returning the quest she says, effectively that to be ready you should not have hatred.

This quest is undoubtedly the best Blizz has ever come up with, and the first one I've ever wanted to immediately redo after I finished it (and I totally did redo it). It throws us back to BC-- literally--where us nostalgics get to watch the endgame battle with Illidan, from his POV no less. We get to fight a raid team made up of guildies with old BC titles, one of whom is naturally afk (DAMN YOU Johnny Awesome, no one likes you! I bet he shows up to raids with no flasks too) and one of whom only has one warglaive (keep trying for the second, little guy) and listen to their adorable comments of "who the heck aggro'd?" and "can I get a rebirth?"

Not to mention that shipper fodder, ending Illidan's scenario with him remembering and saying the name of his childhood love Tyrande. <3 I hope the rest of this questline is so epic.

I am a Death Knight and I have a few problems.

1: I had nothing to do with killing Illidan, why do I need to redeem myself for this?

2: If anything, I should be redeeming myself for the defenseless civilians I slaughtered, and I think I redeemed myself for that by killing the Lich King. Unlike Illidan, I actually succeeded in saving the world.

3: He sacrificed everything? I am literally a soulless corpse.

Long story short: I should have thrown you back into the ocean when I had the chance.

If you are a druid, and in flight form before entering this scenario, it will probably bug out. Will have to leave and return again. Half an hour of waiting and watching this in stage two was kinda annoying...

"I would like to witness the fall of Illidan Stormrage at the Black Temple again, Xe'ra."

Not a single word how to get there :/

Take portal from Your order hall back to Dalaran,head to portals,take portal to Vale of the Eternal Blossoms,from there move up the stairs(left side stairs) and there You will find portal to Shattrath.Another way You can get there is just going to any major city and take portal to Blasted Lands.

The easiest way to get there - in Legion Dalaran go to the middle of the city there is a building,move in and stand on circle,it will teleport u in da house. Then run all the way down to last room and there u will find the portal to Shattrath City !

i keep getting "Transfer Aborted: Instance Not Found" when i try and do this quest. i get to the circle on my mini map and i click the item that pops up on my screen and when it hits loading screen it just doesn't load then i get ported back to the front of the place i just was.

I have DBM and all addons disabled while doing this i have restarted my WoW multiple times i don't know much more i can do to complete this quest.

This quest is just pure win, and nostalgia, all around. Illidan fights the raid that fought him. It's almost as awesome as the quest Welcome to the Machine (Welcome to the Machine) where we incidentally meet Johnny Awesome with all his heirlooms and a horse made of stars, for the first time? He has come far, or not. He is naturally AFK during the entire encounter - unless you kill him first but then it's not like he will accept the battle res.

There are some odd things tho such as a lot of the raiders are already wearing gear from having defeated Illidan before, such as the troll (I think it was a troll, it looked like a troll) rogue with the Warglaive of Azzinoth offhand. So this is what it's like for raid bosses, it's groundhog day every week as the world resets and the raiders come to steal your loot and dance on your corpse over and over again.

Personal nightmare is seeing the mage standing there conjuring cookies for the healers before the encounter ... Horrible flashbacks.

Personal best so far is killing all but three of the raiders. I'm not sure but I don't think you can beat them, the game is rigged!

IMO, this could be a ploy of forces loyal to the Shadow. Remember: Light and Shadow are two sides of the same coin. Also, fel fears/hates the shadow. The reverse is not true.

I initially thought that the NPCs attacking me were some famous players. Like Nihilum or something, who claimed the world's first Illidan kill. Turns out they are just random names.

This quest is currently bugged.

When you approach The Black Temple you are greeted with the normal "lets see what Illiadan does now" and you can click the normal tab. Loading screen seems OK, but you are kicked out of the game immediately after loading screen ends.

This goes for all classes and whether your using add-onns or not (at least judged by the number of players and comments at the front gate).

Edit: (Blizz support options).
The first is addon caused, deleting your addons folder and playing the scenario without them installed woll solve it.

The second issue can crash the game, the Developers are currently working on a hotfix to the live game which should be ready shortly. What can help with this, in some cases (for those using Windows 10) is disabling the Xbox DVR functionality in Windows:

1.Press Windows Key + Q to open the Windows Search.
2.Search for "Xbox" and open the Xbox App (already installed by default).
3.Login with your Microsoft account.
4. If you are greeted with a welcome screen, click Play.
5. Once open, click on settings option on the lower left (cogwheel icon).
6. Select the game DVR option.
7.Toggle the game DVR off.

What I would like you to please try is as follows:

1. Please try playing with all of your addons disabled from the character select screen. If this still does not help, you will need to log out and delete the three (3) folders/maps WTF, Interface and Cache.

2. Please try abandoning the quest and retaking it. I can see you took it at 1:07pm on Tuesday and reported the issue to us at 3:12pm but the quest has not ever been abandoned at any point. Abandon/retry remains one of the most effective diagnostics when encountering issues with any quest in this game, especially as a self service fix. I've fixed countless quests on my own at home this way.

Unfortunately, even if you target the healers, then the casters, then the melee dps, then the tanks, and eventually wipe the whole raid group, nothing different happens. You just end up fighting Maiev with the group of players all dead on the ground, and lose.

I didn't get the final cinematic but the quest completed for me. Everything else was like the instance so I imagine the final scene was also the same with Maiev Stormrage wondering what the Huntress does with out the prey.

I have to say I am quite disappointed with the turn-in verbiage of this quest. There is no hatred in my heart what-so-ever. If nothing else, I understand Illidan more than I ever have. I always thought of him as being rash and headstrong and allowing those traits to make poor choices in attempting to do what everyone around him was trying to do. Thanks to this quest series I now understand what really put him on that path and why he ended up how he did. I enjoyed it so much I wish there had been an additional episode between the last 2 to show that happened to him during that time. I have no hatred for him, I am sorry for him. I am hopeful he will find redemption and complete his quest of stopping the Legion's invasion with this expansion.

Light's Heart is not as all-knowing as we thought.

If you are doing this as Retribution Paladin and you cant get into p2 because your Illidan is too good make sure you didn't buff yourself with BoK/BoW before you started the scenario. 2 buffs will make Illidan immortal.

Easiest way to get there: goto Legion Dalaran. In the benter of the building in the center of Dalaran, is a blue circle, on the floor, on a dais. Stand on it and get transported to a large room. At the bottom of the ramp is a portal to Burning Legion Shatrath. Take a flight, or ride your horse, from Shatrath to the main entrance of the Black Temple on the eastern tip of Shadownoon Valley. Xe'ra will appear, and give you a button to press to start the quest. At the end, when Illidan is at 0 health, do nothing but wait. In fifteen seconds you get a final cut scene.

You actually get to kill your own toon while playing as illidan. I never saw it on my DH or DK but just did it on my warrior and saw it. Had my name, title, and guild name, as well as looking exactly like what I did going into this.

As someone who really likes Illidan's character and who was waiting to play as a demon hunter again since the days of WC3... I'm not very fond of this questline's undertone.

Don't get me wrong, it's a really great questline. It shows Illidan in what is, for me, the proper way. A rather machiavellian character, selfish but also, in his own way, noble. He is perhaps the most dangerous foe the Legion ever encountered, but he is also a power hungry sorcerer whose hands and soul are far from clean. His "betrayal" of the night elves might have been misunderstood, however he is definitely guilty of other crimes. That's what I always liked about Illidan (well, and the artwork); he isn't evil incarnate like the Lich King, Deathwing or the demons of the Burning Legion, but neither is he a force for good alone. He fights the Legion at every turn, and may care for Azeroth and its inhabitants (especially Tyrande; you'd think he would move on in ten thousand years) in his own way, but by no means is he innocent of atrocities himself, and neither are his demon hunters.

While that is shown quite well (how Illidan sacrificed the night elf mages, for example, shows both sides of his character remarkably well and gives someone who hasn't read the novels insight on how he thinks), Xe'ra's ultimate conclusion and accusation towards non-demon hunters as well as her near-reverence of the Illidari are disturbing. Yes, Illidan might not be an evil monster as portrayed, but neither is he without many, glaring flaws, and same thing goes for his followers. They have sacrificed of themselves, but they have also sacrificed others. In the same manner, while the rest of the adventurers might have been guilty of vilifying and taking down Illidan (even before the rest of his backstory was revealed it was known that Illidan was at war with the Legion and I personally always found how we ended up taking him on as the ultimate villain a bit unsatisfying) but there is no denying that they have saved the world many times from a lot of threats. The Illidari fought at the frontier, their focus the Legion, attempting to take the fight to the demons. Quite an admirable goal indeed, but that doesn't mean the residents of Azeroth waited there drinking, only taking a break to kill Illidan before returning to their partying. The Legion might be one of the greatest threats, but in the meantime someone has to deal with necrolords, forces of ancient buried evil, mad dragons and crazy warlords.

Ultimately, in the context of the game, what the quests' conclusion should have aimed at is acceptance of the past and understanding for the future, not elevating the Illidari to perfection while pointing fingers at everyone else. The idea is to redeem Illidan and his followers in the eyes of the world, but not to vilify the world in turn. It's a bad end in what for me was otherwise a good questline and I feel it devalues the fantasy behind the character I play. I didn't sign up to play the misunderstood saint, I signed up to play the "beat the Legion at any cost" bastard. Again, I'm not gonna say the questline sucks, rather the opposite (and facing the raid is epic), but I think the ending could have been handled a bit differently.

Please do not make the same mistake I did. I waded right in and destroyed the raid. While it's true you can't completely kill them, you can devastate them. But this means it takes forever for you to die. The Beserk timer on Stage 2 is 15 minutes. I made it to the 15 minute beserk mark with 60% health. At that rate I would have been in Stage 2 for at least 40 minutes but I abandoned the quest and went back in. By not killing anyone, Stage 2 was over in around one minute.

40 minutes or one minute. It's completely up to you.

There are three versions of this quest: Destiny Unfulfilled (QuestID 44481) if you already killed Illidan, Destiny Unfulfilled (QuestID 44496) if you haven't and QID Destiny Unfulfilled (QuestID 44497) for Demon Hunters and Hunters. There are a few things that can break the scenario. If you have trouble completing it check for this:

- The addon Deadly Boss mods will skip cut scenes and throw you out of the scenario prematurely, the end video sequence where Illidan says "Tyrande" is triggering the quest as complete (disable addons or disable skip cutscenes in /dbm options)
- Pet Classes won't get credit if you attempt it while the pet is summoned. This mechanic / bug / limitation has been around since classic, basically your pet will get the credit if it gets the last hit (Simply despawn pet before entering scenario
- If you did Black Temple for the first time that week, shortly after accepting quest 44496 this may cause a bug where you complete the scenario (after your status with Illidan changed) but are not awarded completion credit at the end because you had the wrong quest for your progress with Illidan active, abandon and restart the quest will fix it, the NPC will then give you the updated quest ID
- And obviously, can't complete it while in raid, don't try to complete this while you wait for your Argus raid to fill up ^^

This quest bugged for me on my level 110 beast mastery monk. The raid was attacking me for like 10 minutes while I just stood there, not taking any damage. I then proceeded to literally kill everyone in the raid. I started with the healers, use my Sheer ability to reduce their health by 40%, then using my second ability (Glaive Attack) a couple of times in a row to kill them.

It was slow going, but I managed to kill all but three of the raid members. After that, any time I killed one of them, another player would self rez somehow to take their place. It was like whack a mole. Eventually, I got all three remaining raid members down to less than 10% health, and then used by third ability to kill them all at the same time. Lo and behold, three raid members self resurrected and the fight continued endlessly.

I eventually gave up and used the "exit vehicle" button, then restarted the scenario. On the second try, the quest didn't bug out, and Illidan actually took damage, so I was able to complete it.

I still feel like I deserve some kind of achievement or something though for managing to kill everyone!

Was doing this quest today on a druid alt wearing Ekowraith, Creator of Worlds and running with Resto Affinity. Turned out that the boosted Ysera's Gift still worked on Illidan and kept him almost fully healed the entire fight. I killed the entire raid and went after Maiev...got her down to 1% hp, just out of curiosity what would happen, since technically I beat her! (I was still at 98%). Nope...Maiev just went immune, Illidan went stunned, and the scenario went to the final cutscene (and I have to admit, I had no idea there was a cutscene...even though I have done this quest on 13 characters, I would just leave the scenario as soon as Illidan "died" and the quest credited. Doh!)

A Bug and a Fix.

If you haven't killed Illidan in Black Temple yet, you'll get a quest and a scenario that considers that. However if after you've picked up the quest, you've gone and killed Illidan in Black Temple, it will show you the wrong scenario now. You must abandon your quest, return to Class Hall and pick up the new one that considers Illidan murdered.

If you don't see YOUR character in the raid party, the scenario is probably bugged. You could end up in a situation where the last five members of the raid endlessly respawn, even if you've killed all the healers. In this case you need to exit the scenario and try again.

As of Shadowlands prepatch, this quest is incredibly buggy, with most things being unattackable throughout, but you can still complete it. You just mostly stand around and do nothing for most of the phases.

Broken quest in prepatch 9.0.1

If the instance won't load go to Chromie in your main city to go back to the present time. Once you're in the instance, it's very broken. Just wait it out and it will eventually atuo complete.

This quest (actually, both scenarios in this questline) is SUPER buggy as of October 2020. Abilities that don't do any damage yet the quest/phases progressing... Even turning off ElvUI didn't fix the issue. Would have been a really neat quest had it worked properly. :(

New-ish bug for this one, easy way to get it to complete: don't do anything.
(Spoilers: you can't do anything)
All "enemies" are orange and not attackable targets so wasn't even able to have any fun with them, hence the "bug".
At one point in the ~~fight~~ encounter I hit Metamorphosis, otherwise, just hung out (turned off DBM, just in case) and got smacked a bunch.

There is a small thread up on the bug report forums but I can't really see them spending time to fix this kinda thing.
It's lame, but at least the quest still completes!

I'm a demon hunter and so confused by this questline.

Can't land any hits, can't really do anything this quest. Illidan dies and then I have to do heroic level dungeons/raids to continue the questline. Am I missing something?

Can't do this quest during patch 9.0.1 for whatever reason. Skills don't work and you can't attack the raiders.

If this keeps bugging for you try Disabling Azeroth Auto Pilot as well as Auto Turnin, then make sure your Artifact Weapon is equipped. Relog after equipping your Artifact Weapon and then try the scenario again.

the raid is unwinnable and if you do kill them they will non-stop b.rez. and then it'll take FOREVER for them to beat you. I was able to look up how to do this fight, then decide to comment on here, realize I forgot my password, reset the p.w. and typed out this comment all before I'm even below 40% health..

Unfortunately this is no longer correct, as a Paladin there is only 1 version of the quest and due to Blizzard incompetence it is physically impossible to complete due to scaling errors.

Don't do anything other than using Metamorphosis in third phase and let them kill you. If you try to kill raiders, you won't be able to complete the quest.
