Although probably a momentary bug, the quest wont complete if you banish him while his health is at 1. Hit him a few with your Throw or Wand until the message that he is weakened appears and then banish him.

Can't seem to locate the hand-in for this quest, the tracker sends me to where the Archduke is and I've revisited Thorium Point, Iron Hill and all the questgivers on the way to this quest.

Looks like a phasing bug to me.

I didn't seem to get the message about him being sufficiently weakened, and thus I killed him by accident the first time around. Fortunately he respawns quite fast (2-3 minutes I'd say). If you throw the stone at him when he's at ~2k health it works fine, though.

this seems to be another one of those quest that if you have a quest helper you will have to disable it to finish it

Couldn't get this quest to complete. I don't have a quest helper, and I tried three times, killing him slowly and waiting patiently for the signal that he was weakened the third time.
The first and third times, he just disappeared when I used the item.
The second time, the item seemed to go through, but I still didn't get credit for the quest.
Shame :\

Talk to the questgiver again to grab Minions of Calcinder before continuing on. Easy done on the way.

I was running the mod "Recount" (the only mod I have enabled) and was unable to complete the quest after three attempts. I disabled Recount and completed the quest on the first attempt after.

If you go through the cavern where all the Flamewraith's are located, down the bottom and to the left, Calcinder is located in there. There will be one other Flamewraith patrolling him as you approach him.

Tried it the first time, it despawned so i disabled all my addons but even after that he kept despawning :/ Ticketed blizzard about it i'll update it next week when its finally answered >.>

K i retried again and i slowly attacking him (used ranged weapon as 85 rogue) when he started casting something i used the item on him and the quest completed :) Hope this helps for other ppl who have trouble with it

Ok..
I tried twice...no luck with Calcinder (who is inside the mountain follow tunnels to the left!)

I decided to continue to try with all add-ons running. Third time was a charm..got smart...attacked with staff until message to banish him appeared. Hit him with the banishing mojo and BAM gone! Very little damage done to him make him weak enough..so don't hit him with your best shot, just a couple of good whacks will do it.

Turn it is located at 38.26, 27.19 to Overseer Oilfist at Thorium Point. Nice rep of 2100 with the Thorium brotherhood!

Just bumping the date out a little.

I did this quest three times trying to get Loremaster on my 85 Paladin.

Read the notes here that addons messed with it... turned them all off and bam there were go.

Super lame... I have too many addons to list though. Recount and NPC were noted previously and are among my addons.

It gets you 1,540 rep with the guild perk only, not, as wowhead suggests, 350!
Infact, loremaster of this area and Burning Steppes got me from neutral with Thorim Brotherhood to 3/4 revered with no repeatable handins!

85 HUNTERS, even if u take all your gear off, ANY OF YOUR ATTACKS WILL KILL HIM, so...just use 'Snake Trap' with all your gear off to weaken him, then use banish to complete.

If you mess up, he respawns in 2-3 mins...un-equip your weap's and any aoe trinks.

i did't know how to get out of here when i was finished. i back tracked back to the slaves.
then decided maybe i should have been going forward after killing the boss. So i went back there, cleaned out the cave, killed the elite again, and couldn't go through the back of the cave either. It was too dark to see. i tried to jump for ages and the elite re spawned again!
so i hearth stoned home. now i got to figure out how to get to Thorium Point, which was just on the other side of the back of the cave! Hmm waste of time.

ok, seems you can just fly directly to Thorium Point :P

Hug the left wall all the way in.

It is only a short distance to Archduke Calcinder.

Don't enter the big room. There is a smaller tunnel on the left that allows you to bypass most of the Flamewraiths.

I was doing this at level 90 for Loremaster. Killed him 3 times with even the weakest move, so I stripped naked. Punched him about 5 times, banished. Hope this helps (:

Trying to tie of the loose ends of Thorium Brotherhood rep? If you are a lvl 90 and geared, you'll have to strip down to your undies to weaken him enough to banish him. Just make sure you put on clean ones before you leave the house :)

As a level 100 going for loremaster, I could not weaken him enough without killing him, even without any gear on. I happened to be carrying Rhea's child trinket, summoned it and let it do all the work while healing the it to full a couple times. Job done!

I completed this at level 100 today and just one melee hit knocked him down to exactly 1 hp. There are a couple of other quests where this is the case for high levels, too, provided you actually have the quest. So, no more need to strip or get rez sickness for this quest.

It doesn't apply to every quest that requires weakening low level mobs, though.

I completed this quest at level 120 by using the Foxicopter Controller toy, as it will deal very low damage.

Attacked him twice with it and I got him down past 50%.

Just completed this as a 60. It's been fixed where he won't insta-die when you hit him. He'll drop to 1%, then use the item.
If you're having trouble finding your way to him, exit the mines.
There is another entrance at (47.43 46.95) that is a almost a direct route to him.

Description

Archduke Calcinder squirms in the back of this very cavern. We are close to killing him... but that is not what we are going to do.

Slaying Calcinder here means nothing. His acolytes can easily revive him. Instead, we are going to banish him.

I asked you to gather a precious stone from the Twilight's Hammer earlier. You will now use it against Calcinder. Engage him, weaken him, then use this device on him. He will be banished from this realm.
