Before this place is flooded with useless "I tamed Ban'thalos at herp time on derp server" comments, I'll post some useful information.
He is found circling high above the Sanctuary of Malorne.
His spawn timer is 6-17 hours.
He is a spirit Spirit Beast. You must have the Beast Master talent in order to tame him.
His NPC ID is 54320.
Strategy:
Ban'thalos flies up very high. The fall would kill you without some sort of fall slowing mechanism. The best method seems to be to park yourself at the top of the tree just behind the statue of Malorne. Have a freezing trap down. Once he flies close enough, fly up a bit, dismount, shoot and tame.
You actually do not need "Slow Fall" for this method, as you should land atop the tree after tagging him.

PRO TIP:
If you're a goblin, hit it with a normal shot, fall towards your death, rocket jump before hitting the ground so you take no damage. Lay a trap down, tame as he flys down, he gets cought in the trap mid-tame, and boom, done. EASIEST SPIRIT BEAST I'VE EVER GOTTEN!

For those of you who are not Goblins- if you are facing the statue of Malorne, there's a slightly crooked, tall tree on the left of the shrine. While on your flying mount, hold the X button while hovering over the tree until you don't go down as if you were hitting the floor. If you dismount on that very spot, you'll have the best seat in the house to tame this beast.
The rest is simple- lay a frost trap, mount up and hit the space bar to go up from that spot, shoot Ban'thalos when he gets near, let him fall on your trap, and tame away.
Good luck and good hunting!

I'll try to not make this another "OMG I got it!" post. Though I was the first person on Kalecgos to get it.
Anyway, my strategy. I couldn't land on the tree like was suggested. So I dismounted in midair, shot him, then popped my parachute when I was close to the ground. If you're not an engineer, you can try
Evonice's Landin' Pilla
. It's pretty easy to get. So the problem is that the guy hits like a truck. Five or six hits was enough to kill me. So obviously you want to freeze him. But unfortunately, he'll start hitting you with his moonfire-esque attack before he reaches the ground. I used Deterrence, but I don't know if it actually worked or not. He killed me a few times, sometimes just as he would hit my trap. I mostly relied on getting lucky and him not attacking me enough to kill me. When he finally froze before killed me, I got him. Yay, new pet. I named him Kaepora after Kaepora Gaebora.

Saw Ban'thalos fluttering around as soon as I finished the questline on my druid with a bunch of hunters hovering around him. I hopped on my hunter and quickly did the quests, fortunately he was still around.
Died a few times figuring things out, checked the comments here at wowhead, then perched atop the tree with a trap waiting. Mounted, hit the spacebar to go up and waited till he was in range, then shot him and dropped. He hit my trap, I hit my Deterrance/Tame macro and he was mine 10 seconds later. I immediately got a bunch of "grats!" and "HOWDAFUK" whispers from other hunters and showed a few hunters my technique for taming when they asked. It seems like a LOT of hunters forget they have a handy thing called a Freezing Trap, since I saw so many people dying to his moonfire, which hits for like 30k every second.
The tree-sitting strategy is a winner, but I imagine that disengaging just before hitting the ground and setting a trap would yield the same results.
Server first tame at 8:11pm PST on US Azuremyst. Good luck to everyone!

All I can say is this...
I didn't use and fancy stuff to tame this guy, like standing on the tallest tree next to him or being a goblin or engineer. All I did to tame him was shoot then use
Skyguard's Drape
ice trap and tamed.
I forgot to use Deterrence but if you can make the fall with no damage you'll live through the moonfires and have 13-15k health.
Submitted a screenie of my Tauren and her newly tamed banny.
Edit: I don't know why this got down rated. You can tame him perfectly fine with a slow fall. Why down rate useful information?

Just tamed this guy about 15 mins ago, finally after 3deaths. I wasnt able to stand on the Tree as previous people suggested, so i just improvised a little. I flew just high enough so that i could reach him, then i just dismounted, got a shot off and before i fell to my death used disengage. I landed safely against the mountain behind me. I set a quick freeze trap, although he did get a couple of hits off with his arcane spell i was able to tame him with only bout 5k health left, but it did the job.
This guy is nice, tamed him 4:15am servertime on Norgannon

Here are some things to know about this bird.
Spawn timer: 6 - 18 hours
Location: Mount Hyjal near the Sanctuary of Malorne
Trick: He flies VERY high up
Temperment: Non-Aggressive
Pet Tree: Ferocity
Pet Type: Spirit Beast(Exotic)
Strategy 1: Tree Sitting - There is a tree by the statue on the left side where you can stand on top of. Positioning is key or else you fall to death, once on the tree lay a freezing trap down when he gets closer to you and mount up. Fly straight up until you can hit him and aggro him. He can be trapped and should be trapped as his moonfire isnt so nice. (You really need the trap or he'll kill you). This is the strategy I used and it proved very successful after 3 tries.
Strategy 2: Endurance - Lay down a freezing trap at the top of the head of the statue. Mount up, once you are within range of Ban'Thalos, dismount and shoot him. Use your parachute cloak to go down. Its a good idea to use any heals you have just incase. Because you have a longer ways to fall you wont usually take any fall damage but you will take alot of moonfire damage. So keeping yourself alive from that is your main objective. Once he is trapped, it's an easy tame. (make sure once you pull you hit esc to stop shooting him so you dont break your trap). This method is great if you cant get on the tree but it does hurt alot more.
Edit. These methods still work in warlords.

Can confirm that this drops the tear of loyalty vendor item and NO epics, because I just had a lock steal it from me as I was getting into position to tame it. :/ So if you're not a hunter, please just leave it alone... you're not going to get "sick epics" to make tons of money off of, you're going to get a cheap gray item and several people angry with you.

Tamed by a troll hunter on Malfurion-US server at 7:32 PM server time. :( Right before my eyes. Oh well, at least I got to see it spawn.
Finally got him oh my lord I died maybe three times trying to get him sob. Tamed 3:15 Malfurion-US server by the large tree. Used Distracting Shot because I couldn't Auto Shot while falling (learned that the hard way), worked like a charm. Not sure what to name him yet.
Also for other hunters, if you're having trouble getting on the tree, coords that I was able to use are 27.25, 64.26. Hope that helps.

Tamed it on US - Llane at 8:02 pm server time.
My tactic:
I waited in a tree behind the Sanctuary of Malorne statue for 4 hours. When he spawned high above I was unable to range him from the tree top. So, I got on my flying mount and positioned myself in his flight path but above the column ring in the Sanctuary, being careful not to hover to high. When he flew close enough I dismounted, shot him, and just fell to the column ring, taking about 75% damage. I quickly dropped a trap then used Deterrence to avoid the moonfire. When he was safely trapped I tamed him.
He is a very beautiful spirit beast, my favorite so far.

Just tame it on Haomarush-EU. As i couldnt get the tree thingy to work i decided to try the aggro Disengage way, and for me it worked on the first try. Might have been all luck ofc but it worked. I did what Victorp said, pull him from high up and then disengage, i landed safely on a ledge somewhere with about 40k hp left. Then i just put Freezing trap down and started taming. I did this around the tree thats behind the statue, ull see some ledges in the mountain where u should try to land.
If u cant get the tree thing to work give this one a go, worked like a charm for me.
Happy hunting

Just logged in the Shrine of Malorne on my mage Instability @ Hakkar around 10:30 PM. I was camping the beast all day. Unfortunately when I got back to my hunter, I noticed I had to do all the Hyjal quests to see the beast (since it's located in the Regrowth phase).
There were 2 Alliance hunters and a orc hunter falling and dying attempting to capture it. Watching his effort to capture the owl, I decided to help him out. After all, he had the guts to try over and over to capture the beast.
I teached him the Treetop Method as described here, and he managed to get it at the first try after landing in the tree. Get on the tree, fly with space bar, auto-shoot once, deterrence, freezing trap and tame.
Nilrveb captured Ban'thalos @ Hakkar around 10:40 PM realmtime together with me at my mage Instability. He was happy that he named his pet after my mage's name.
He is probably the second or third person to capture the owl on Hakkar US, since I've been camping the zone together with my friends since 4.2 launch.
Ban'thalos is pretty beautiful ingame, it's really worty. I just hope I can also catch it soon on my own Hunter. :P
Here's a pic of it (tamed):

Easiest way to tame, in my opinion;
Balance your mount on the tallest tree behind the Malorne statue and wait. When he spawns, dismount and drop a Freezing Trap. Remount and fly
directly
up about 5-10 yards. When he's within range, dismount and Arcane/Auto Shot him. You'll land on the top of the tree and take minimal damage, if any. From there you can start the tame, and he'll get frozen. Works perfectly if you're careful.
Tamed at approximately 3:45 PM PST on Velen.

Tamed him at around 3 AM server on Nathrezim. (Tinkerbow@Nathrezim)
I used the tree-top method, however, 3 times he killed me because as I was falling his moonfire (even with deterrance) would kill me as he was coming towards me. You've got to make sure you're really careful, hit him when he's as close as you can stand, and only fly up as high as you absolutely must. From there it was a breeze and I actually managed to get the tame off before this awful ally mage that was standing on a ledge nearby fireballed me to death. I made sure when i rezzed to pull him out in front of the mage and /rude.

I would like to give a couple of tips on this...
- Misdirect him onto your pet. That way you don't have to take the hard-hitting Moonlights.
- Disengage to avoid the falling damage.
- Once you're on the ground, set down a trap and position your unfortunate pet so Ban'thalos will fly into it.
- Once he's safely trapped, dismiss your pet (after ressing it if necessarily - the two times I attempted the tame on the PTR my pet died just as Ban was about to hit my trap) and start the tame.
Personally I never was into those tactics that required you to fall onto a certain elevated spot - mainly because that gives you a really small time frame to tag him, as most of the time he'll be out of range. By Disengaging instead, it doesn't matter where you start the tame, allowing you to tag him no matter where he is at the time.

Disengage right before hitting the ground.

Just tamed this beasty at 12:36 am on Eredar....I`m either first or 2nd,can`t tell.
For those out there that are hunting this guy heres some tips...
1.Make sure you pull him from the air as far away from his range as you can go to reduce his amount of damage.
2.Once he casts harsh moonlight, use deterrance as you fall to reduce damage,oh and make sure to slow your fall, something I forgot to do the first time.
3.Don`t start taming until he is safely trapped,to reduce the chance of you almost taming him only to get owned by his moonlight.
Good luck to everyone who wants to tame him! :D

You can use NoggenFogger elixir from Tanaris (Gadgetsan) vendor, it gives Slow Fall effect, not always but 1 in 3 tries, so... for non engineers it's an option at least. :)

Is it just me or does Deterrence do jack all against this guy? I tried taming him like 10 times, falling onto the tree. Used a core hound Hysteria, and a haste pot. And deterrence and a freezing trap. The trap would never show up and he never froze, and deterrence did not deflect ANYTHING nor did it cause his melee hits to miss. So every single time I died with a couple seconds left on the tame. Finally a Worgen came along and got him after a couple tries.
I'm not super dissapointed, honestly, but it was a little irking that he kept killing me.

Tamed a few minutes ago on The Venture Co EU - used the raised bar above daily platform as the "landing spot", had a lock fly up, engage then teleport down. I flew up 15-20 yards, hit it, trapped once down and tamed. A single moonfire hit the lock no other damage taken. Very very easy tame.
A big thank you to all the other hunters and other people of various classes in the area cheering me on instead of killing it <3

Saw this guy spawn just now (~6:30 AM), had a horde hunter try to tame him but end up falling to his death. I end up with a similar fate, but having not read up on what these new rares do, I quickly get owned by his op moonfire. Oh well, I run back and if the other hunter has him, grats. But no, there's a DK standing there wacking at him like a tard, taking 5 minutes to kill him while I sit there and watch. Grats on your 25 gold, terrible DK, I hope it's more than you ever have again.

I don't know if I'm the first person to try this, but I'll report back if I manage to tame her - I'm going to try tame her with Aspect of the Wild on, to see if that negates some of the damage from her moonfire spell in the preliminary stages of the tame. Good hunting, all.
Edit : Tamed Banny today at server time 16:59 (EU Tarren Mill, named him Iridescent). I managed to tame him the first time, whilst standing on the thin tree. I simply popped the freeze trap, mounted up, un-mounted and used Distracting Shot on him, then fell down on the tree taking a small amount of damage, he only was able to get 1 moon blast on me. I can truly confirm his spawn timer is anywhere from 6-18 hours.
Good luck and good hunting all.
Word for the wise:
He actually flies around in a circle around the Sanctuary at a pretty slow pace, so you generally have a bit of time to get ready.

Just tamed him, couldn't really make out which tree people were talking about, so just tried one, didn't work, expected to die but then random paladin tries to kill him, i shoot some bullets into him to make sure i get aggro when he dies.
Long story short, I failed, pala died, I tame without pots nor trap.

For anyone attempting to do this, "You must have AGGRO on Ban'Thalos in order to tame it".
So if you have a friend who is helping you pull it down, be sure to distracting shoot it and get a abit of threat on it, before trapping and taming it.
Or rather I should say, make sure the friend/player who is helping know that you need "aggro" in order to tame.
Had a Druid who I paid to help me ground it, since he had a form of slowfall, and he kept tuanting it.

Not sure if anyone has tried this yet, but it should work.
One of the dailies is named Call The Flock, which transforms you into a bird. You can't do anything but call other birds while in this form, but once you disengage the buff, you get wings that let you slow fall for 20 secs, in which time you have the use of your normal abilities while moving. Similar use of a daily buff that is used to get Jadefang in Deepholm. Just don't complete the daily until you tame Ban'thalos. Report back if this is a viable solution.
EDIT - cannot use tame while moving

*UPDATE* Just tamed him exactly 13 hours later (from when he was killed) on Perenolde.
I'm heartbroken. After an entire day of camping he spawns as I'm returning from a lap in The Regrowth. There are 5 other people trying to tag him. My heart is racing and I finally land on the tree top after 6 attempts. I'm completely nervous and get 3 shotted. By the time I get my corpse, the majestic bird is at ground level getting destroyed by a warrior and warlock of my own faction. They slaughter him, and when I asked why they would kill him after seeing me attempting to tame him, the lock replies "For 25G!" and flies off! :(

Ninjau29
Ok people I just got him. This is what I have to add to the info.
First he does spawn at the Sanctuary of Malorne.
During my camping there I find the 6hour timer is valid but actually it is also 6 or more.
First siting: I didn't get the info sorry
2nd siting: 7/2/11 @ 12:00am EST
3rd siting: 7/2/11 @ 6:32pm EST
4th siting: 7/3/11 @ 8:06am EST
If there were spawns in between I cannot say. After each spawn I left then came back 6hrs later.
How I did it:
There is a tall tree behind the statue there (facing toward it the tree is to the left), tall with no leaves. You can stand on its very tip. (May take you a bit to get it right but once you get on top of it and cannot fly down anymore/the tree stops you then you can dismount to test it. Just fly straight up and camp. When he spawns just wait till he gets close enough (make sure you are at a lower height then the bird but just close enough to shoot at him. This make it less likely you will get mowed down by HIS MOONFIRE. When I dismounted I hit him with Concussive Shot, landed on the tip of tree taking fall damage, dropped a freezing trap and used deterrence right after, once Det wore off started the tame.
Now some $%^ Ally Pally tried to stop me by flying up and hitting me with Hammer of Justice, I started tame again he flies up and tries Repentance next, but to no avail I still got my objective. (When I see him next time I'm gonna rip him apart. Evertime I tried I got mowed down by the bird except this time. He never hit me once, maybe a close up melee shot then froze. Being lower gave me a distance advantage plus using Concussive may have dizzied him into not using his moonfire. I'm sure you all understand what I'm saying
Good Luck and OH I'm on Gurubashi Server

Just tamed him today with no help from anybody and no special tricks like slow fall or even deterrence. I stood on top of the statue's head ,dropped my trap, mounted and flew up as he was heading towards me. When he was in range, I dismounted, hit arcane shot twice, landed on the statue and stopped my attack. Then I spammed the tame button until he got in range and hit the trap. Successfully tamed with about 25% of my health left and I don't think he ever hit me with his attack. I have my freeze trap glyphed so I think it slowed his cast after it broke just enough for the tame to complete. I received a bunch of /cheers and when I asked if anyone had done anything to help, nobody said they had.
This was the third time I have seen him since the patch. I failed the first two times I tried to get him. The second time , a few days ago, he killed me and everybody started attacking him. Another Hunter who just happened to be there hit tame as they were killing him and got the tame right before the Owl died. I never get that lucky.

Doesn't the tame automatically cancel if someone is attacking the mob?
Ban'thalos spawned for me yesterday around 7pm, but some really mean poops attacked him after I pulled him to my trap, and when I tried to tame him it failed after a second every time. :-(
It's been about 9 hours now since last spawn. Waiting, waiting...
Edit: Tamed it 10:15am this morning. :-D There was another hunter and DK flying around trying to grab it, but finally I got it after dying 2 times! First time I was so nervous I forgot Freezing Trap. Second time I got moonfired to death before it reached the trap. Third time was the charm! :-D

For hunters who are camping him and you are unsure where he is exactly. pick a hight you think is suitable, then fly another 100 yards up. he appears VERY high up and is not so easy to tame. Getting him onto the floor with you alive successfully is only half the job, whereas surviving his harsh moonlight attack and taming him is a whole second part.
Once I got him onto the floor for the first time, I was very excited, until I got destroyed by his harsh moonlight and lost him to another hunter by the time I ran back to my corpse. The next time he appeared I found it virtualy impossible without the help of another player.

Yesterday, at 5:15PM EST on Lothar-US I tamed Banthalos using the tree trick. EZ PZ. Didn't even use a slow fall of any kind. Just arcane shotted him from my mount which dropped me down to tree, and then frost trap, tame beast. At 11:40PM EST someone said in Hyjal general chat 'group up for banthalos?" and I was like, WTF? so I flew over, and he had spawned again. As I arrived, he was being tamed again by another alliance hunter, with the tree method and ice trap.
Now, I can't 100% confirm this, but I'm pretty sure no Magria or Ankha spawns anywhere in there. and about 20 mins ago (5:40AM EST) I got a banthalos alert. It was a horde hunter who had tamed him, still named Spirit Beast. Anecdotally that would continue the 6-7 hour spawn time. I didn't see the tame, of course, so who knows when that Tauren did it, but I think it's a pretty good chance it was just this morning. So my evidence says:
6-7 hour spawn times very likely.

A small story regarding my capture of this elusive spirit beast (TL:DR version in the end).
As i was finishing the daily questing the Molten Front, i noticed a large, transparent owl flying above the Malorne Sanctuary. Seeing such cool beast, without even knowing is value, made me log onto my hunter, which was at the Avianna shrine, which was quite close.
Overcoming the height was no problem to me, as i activated disengage upon almost half of the fall, allowing me to live. As i was laying down a freezing trap to freeze the owl, a voice beckoned me.
"Can you make a snack for your sister please, <IRL name>?" "Okay, i'll be there soon!". As i switched back to the screen, i felt an immense horror, for i found myself dead.
On the way back to my body, the combat log revealed that Ban'thalos had an ability that was quite lethal. But how, if i had a trap ready? Maybe she cast it on the way down.
Regaining my senses, i quickly ate a nice meat snack and flew towards the bird, shooting it and disengaging at half hight again. I was awaiting the beast,
silencing shot
ready and all, when the beast started to cast the spell. It was out of my reach! I quickly feign my death to stay alive, and the bird returned to ths skies.
Once again, i rose to the skies, but with a different tactic: by using my amazing
deflect-everything-skills
, i awaited to deflect the owl's moonfire. But the spell came through my dance, and it magic stung my heart. I tried to feign my death once more, but this time, it was real.
At this time i noticed another hunter, a tauren, nearby me. I knew time was urgent, so i looked upon
divine
insights
on any clues on how to effictively capture the beast. Although the moonfire was indeed hopeless to resist, using the treetops behind the Malorne Sanctuary was a good aproach. As fast as i could (after healing my wound before a possible fall), i quickly rose to a treetop and went off my mount. I've failed to land on the treetop and fell down to the earth. I somehow survived the fall, and i felt gratefull for such an
achievement
.
My guildmates cheered for me with the ritual of "woot!"s, but i replied it would be even a greater "woot" if anyone could assiste me in the capture. As i flew up once again, i noticed the bird chasing a troll mage, which was
slowly falling
. He was attempting to catch the pet for his friend tauren hunter. Not on my watch! As both reached the grounded, i began the tame.
But wait! Why wasn't it working?
A
quick study upon the beast
revealed that the ebast was an exotic one, which only Beast Masters could tame!
"DAMN IT!" I said to my self, as i quickly feigned death and
switched specializations
; "Why couldn't they give the insight in bigger words!"
The tauren hunter quickly began to tame the beast, but its moonfire quickly claimed another life. As it quickly persued the mage, seeking aid from a nearby blood elf paladin, i quickly chased both until the range was safe. I placed a
trap
on the floor and
launched a soft shot at the head
. The owl quickly noticed me and launched at me with such a speed that i could feel the wind of the charge even though she was trapped in ice at mere inches of me. Not one second later i begin the taming. As i focused, i noticed the looks around me. The troll mage and the paladin, along with other druids of the Hyjal offensive at the Firelands, were all watching me comunicating with the bird. I was expecting the mage or the paladin to burst the trap and setence my death, but no... they were silent. They were still, aparently clear that after all the struggles, i was entitled to become the bird's companion.
For a brief, time was still. I thought i was going to be lost in time forever...
...until Ban'thalos finnally obeyed my command to remain calm.
My heart cheered, as i felt the
soothing calm
of my new companion.
The troll mage wasn't angry with me. Instead, he tried to claim a bit of the glory, whispering me that i should thank him for his help in bringing the pet down, in which i replied that not even a thousand thanks could express my gratitude. My guild then showed signs of cooperation in assisting with the taming, but i warned that i was already sucessfull. They cheered me, but asked about the "woot". Well, i gave them a "woot" alright, one so big it occupied 3 lines of our mental chat, and they all laughed in approval.
All of Hyjal soon knew i obtained a very "valuable" companion, in which i thanked for all the atention. As the cheering began to turn into swearing though (including the tauren hunter), i quickly announced : "Well, if you excuse me, i've got a sis to feed". And i gave a last look at the laughs of few before i went to tend to my beloved sister.
TL:DR version
: Due to the Hyjal assault on the Firelands, Ban'thalos region will become full of players going around. I suggest bringing a lot of friends and having care upon taming this Spirit Beast.

Well my little story is not one of a successful tame (by me anyway) but here it is in hopes that others will follow my lead.
I came upon Ban'thalos just yesterday (first time ever spotted) and didn't have any idea how I would tame him due to the heights and no (visible) place to land in range of the flight path. I didn't come here and read about the treetop sitting till after.
Anyway... While I was fumbling about I noticed my precious Ban'thalos diving down to the ground. I rushed down to see and there I saw a horde troll/hunter and very low health taming Ban'thalos and I could have simply one shot the guy and claim my prize but then I realized he had to force dismount and distract shot this guy and then still survive the fall and do his tame...
Well.. I waited patiently for the tame and then /cheer for him upon which I received a /salute and a /bow in return.
My day will come I hope... Who knows, perhaps I'll receive similar good will.

Tamed him about an hour ago (1:15am server time) On the Akama server.
First time I tried to get him horde just grabbed and killed him while I was trying to tame. Saw him today by chance and followed the directions: land on tree, lay down ice trap, mount up and shoot, and start taming. Thankfully no one interrupted me this time and hes all mine! Good luck to all others!

Just started the camp for this rare today. And I have learned one thing that I dont believe anyone has mentioned in these comments just yet.
I am on a PVP Server. And for anyone else doing this camp this info might come as a little relief if they are in the same boat as me. If your attempting the top-of-the-tree strategy like I am, ( Cords: 27.26, 64.26 ) ,then I will be happy to tell you that right below the tree and a little to your right if your looking at the camp itself, is the flight master for the area. So far I have had three different players try and land on the mountain behind me attempt to shoot me from afar thinking I am completely AFK. (First was an Elemental Shaman, Next a Moonkin Druid, and third another Hunter), all three quickly found out that shooting me parked up in this tree leaves a -very- angry flight master shooting at them from her location on the ground. These three griefers found out very quickly just how hard they made that flight master hit.
Only the shaman was stupid enough to continue to try to poke me. (I guess he didnt think about possibly healing himself back up to full after having ran away from the flight master for the first failure.) And I am not excatly sure what actually killed him....the flight master hitting him a 2nd time for casting Frost Shock on me (I guess he didnt want me to run away from him up in the tree?), or simply the fall damage of trying to land on the tree with me and failing. I guess only he knows. Shout outs Mr. Orc Shaman, you made my camping a little more entertaining.
PS: He did the the "Hearth of Shame" when he rezzed.

I tamed this lovely looking pet the other day after several attempts, mainly as the Alliance liked to keep killing me or the pet.
Sit on top of the taller of the trees behind Sanctuary of Malorne. It may take a couple of attempts but it can be done. I use to set myself up on the tree before I logged off in-case he was there when I logged back in.
Wait for Ban'thalos to appear, he flies around in a large circle around the temple. When he is close enough sent an ice trap down, mount, fly up, shot him, disengage and start the tame. The ice trap will go off and make its an easy tame.
But be warned this is a busy area, with Alliance and horde hunters and horrible people killing it to either spite you or get loot that isn't that good. I was shot at for the whole tame and was just lucky I had enough HP to live and that Ban'thalos didn't seem to be in there line of sight.
Hope this helps xxxx

they killed it when i was hunting it down cuz some warlock friend told me he was up & he helped me, when we finally came up with a strategy that he summoned me to the point on the tree were u can stand on and after he pulled my trap didnt pop in a part of the tree where it could hit the birdy from where i was standing, just tried to tame anyways, at the very last second it failed & then i died and when i rezzed some alliance @#$%^&*s just killed it for funs...

Please ppl have some respect for your other players. I understand that everyone wants the damn tame first but come'on if u sit there and see a person sitting atop of a tree for 2 days and then the bird appears, be f-ing generous enough to let them have the tame. Karmas a *!@#$. Its not the same thing as stealing a kill or skinning someone elses kill. You just sat there for 2-3 days or more all to see some jackass roll in on there horse and take it from you. Just be respectful please.

I just tamed Ban'thalos on the Azuremyst server, at 01:39 server time.
When Ban'thalos spawned I was on top of the tree pointed out in earlier comments. I quickly realized I wasn't going to get into range from the tree top. I was lucky that no one else was interested so I had time to wait for it to fly to me. I mounted and flew straight up from the tree, when it was in range I dismounted, shot it and soon after landed on the tree top taking minimal damage.
I used deterrence which helped me avoid the spell damage as I waited for the owl to fly into my Freezing Trap.
I agree with previous comments, it is a very nice looking pet.
Good Luck my fellow Hunters.

Ban'thalos has about a 4 hour spawn time after magria or ankha. he flies about 35-40 feet of the ground makeing ur fall very unservivable the best thing to do is dismount above the mosses antlers and land on its head. The next trickie part is getting him to stay in a freezing trap, carefull when he casts harsh moonlight because this is a insta 1 shot. the best time to find him would be earllly in the morning or llllate at night, me wakeing up at 12 pm ST found him :P died and flew back to see someone had killed him. ALSO i dont care if u see another person tameing him, dont kill him let them have it! they were their faster and they want him to. so let them have it:P

Suddenly hunter come and kill. I run back fast then i saw horde mage start killing him! And yes he killed him! (I am horde)! I was really upset. So please if ou are not hunter please do not kill eny rares please! They only drop that grey thinky! Thank you!

Sadly, Ban'thalos is in a rather unfortunate spot, flying right over the daily quest hub... if you aren't able to get onto the tree and tame him within a few minutes, he will most likely be killed. He is noticed very easily and attracts the attention of non-hunters... although they can't kill him alone, they WILL gang up on him.
If you spy him in the sky, remain CALM and PATIENT. Focus on getting on that tree asap; its hard to get on there, I know, but you can do it. I was able to land on it after watching Banny circle about three times, haha. Heart pounding!
Just don't pull in a hurried panic; you'll most likely die and attract unwanted attention even
faster
.
Good luck!

Tamed..
I tried to get close to him but fell, another hunter tried the tree trick but missed; by the time I came back to my body, brought out another Spirit beast to heal me, dismissed pet. I mounted went back up on tree.
Sat there for a min so he can come back around, flew up, Distracting Shot, trap in the air, fall to top of tree; the other hunter fell or something. I popped haste pot, Berserking, deterrence(for safety), and tame. He was in trap with tame took place. I wasn't at full heal, from first fall, and the fall once I hit him.
But after heart pounding for the full 10 sec tame time, he became mine. With nasty yells and spams from the other hunter, the tame was still mine.

Got him last night after a short 2 hour and lucky camp. I camped on the highest tree, the one in the back, on the left of the statue when looking from the front. I had to add the NPC manually to NPCScan in advance.
When he popped out i mounted and flew straight up about 5-10 yds - meaning his range was about 40-50yds above the tree-top. I fired one conucssive shot, and automatically dismounted and landed in the top of the tree. Pulled deterrance, and started taming. He hit me for about 100K dmg before the tame was finished and he reached me, leaving me with about 25K. None of his abilities seem to cancel the tame. No need to trap, didnt use any pots, potions or other stuff. Named him Banthalos

Just saw him tamed last night, 7/8/2011 9:15 Agrammar server time. He spawned exactly at the quarter mark if that helps. Once he spawned, he just flew around in a circle as well.
A hunter was kind enough to annouce it in general chat and I think every hunter in Hyjal flew there immediately. Several died trying to get him (myself included, my floating item didn't work after I was in combat >.< so I went splat) and my original idea of getting him over the water didn't work since his pat goes nowhere near the lake.
It was directly over the questing/daily area too, so I was afraid there would be one less rare without an owner.
I was honestly surprised by the help that was given/offered. A druid gave heals to whoever tried to tame along with advice on how to tame it, and no one even tried to attack it (there were a lot of players there too, opposite faction as well).
The tame eventually happened without much problem, a Worgen hunter that had spent a while getting him down finally got him. He didn't follow the ice-trap/tree plan though, he shot it and fell on the statue and had the druid heal him to full health before he started the tame. That's another possible plan if you have helpful friends or players nearby.
I had several chances to get him when he chased players to the ground before killing the. I could've had a nice new pet, but chose not to since I didn't do anything to get him. (and I spent days getting Olm a few months ago, so not really interested in a new ghost owl) On the plus side, I did manage to get Terrorpene a few seconds after he spawned ^.^

Just tamed this guy at 7pm server time on Garrosh. I just logged in, and there he was flying high. To be honest I wasn't expecting a shot at him so soon. have only seen him once before and another couple hunters were fighting over him...I will never interfere if another hunter is there first.
With that, I was all ready positioned on tree. Just tossed down ice trap and flew up waiting for him to get close enough. The tree method works very well, don't need anything to slow your fall at all or any other tricks, very straight forward...dismount, shoot, fall, tame as he hits ice trap. Got it done first try. Hardest part is containing your excitement and not skipping steps. Make sure to get the trap down because he does blast you with a strong moon fire. Didn't get it off on me but watched him nearly kill the last hunter who tamed him with it.
Thank you to those who left the tree tip. Just wanted to confirm it works like a charm. :) Happy hunting all!

Tamed him on Aszune at 9,30 server time.
NPC scan went off - flew over to the tree - managed to perch myself in it -
Flew up a bit
Waited till he got in range
Arcane shot - dropped onto tree - ice trap - tame
Went really smoothly, no one else could reach him to aggro or try to tame so was great
I spent some time before today praticing how to perch in the tree - came in REALLY useful !
good luck :)

I just got him, and as with Anthriss, a very kind and generous paladin helped me out. I died a couple of times from fall and he managed to lure him down for me.
Boy do they not make it easy!
I will admit I was worried to have Allie hunters try and grab him too but I was lucky and managed quite well.
Imho, for all those new pets, and this is what I am going to do from now on is have someone with me just in case.
Good luck to you all!

After seeing some Alliance/Horde hunters with Ban'thalos I knew I wanted this creature so I started camping on 7/5/11. Pictures do not do this creature any justice
Alliance hunter got tame between
7:30pm - 8pm on 7/5/11
- we both were perched on same tree all afternoon, went to eat dinner, came back and saw him with it
Horde hunter informed me he tamed Ban'thalos a little after
3am on 7/6/11
Nothing to report on 7/7/11
Alliance hunter got tame between
7:30pm - 8pm on 7/8/11
- we both were perched on same tree for much of the afternoon and dinner made me miss this tame again. Hunter saw me later and showed me his tame. Was also kind enough to log onto his horde alt and inform me
Server reset on 7/9/11 at 5am
Anhka
spawned at 1pm on 7/9/11 - Killed by non-hunter horde player who announced it in general chat
Tamed Ban'thalos at 1:45am 7/10/11 on tree (27, 64)
- Was falling asleep
- Alliance shadow priest trying to kill me, but finally left
- Was just about ready to go to bed and then I saw it spawn (bright flash of light and there it was right in the distance in front of me with the silver dragon around it). It is a BIG bird and you can't miss it. It flies clockwise so if your on the tree it will come to you
- Alliance DK saw it also and flew up to check it out
- Adrenaline was flowing, hands were shaking
- Laid down trap, flew up a short distance, waited for it to be within range, distracting shot, got dismounted, landed back on top of tree, Ban'thalos flew down and tagged me twice with beam, it got trapped in Ice Block and I got the tame
- Alliance DK watched and congratulated me
Magria
spawned at 9am on 7/10/11
- Had only tabard, shirt, rings, necklace and trinkets equipped and it killed me with 3 blows
- took off rings, necklace, trinkets and got tame with minimal damage

Getting a worrying influx of non-BM Hunters hanging around the quest hub for longer than necessary if they are just doing dailies, some are even up the tree. I worry because they obviously have no idea you have to be BM to tame it, and expect someone to get frustrated and just kill it when they realise this.
Even if they have BM off-spec, you'd have thought they'd be specced into it ready for instant taming...

Oh wow, nearly screwed up taming this.
Had just finished dailies at 11:40am server time, came back and there it was, a Warrior was failing at killing it, so knew it was the opportune moment to get it up the tree out of reach.
Due to my extreme adrenaline rush, I failed getting into the tree, then screwed up by Serpent Stinging in before trap (same bind on different bars for SS and Tame), so I ended up dead.
By the time I got back and up the tree again, several more people (no Hunters) were circling baying for her blood, but managed to get up first time, and got it trapped and tamed perfectly.
Some of them /cheer at me, maybe because they couldn't gank me if they wanted up the tree, but whatever job done, very happy

Hunters !
1) Get on tree
2) Set ice trap
3) mount up and fly higher, not to high !
4) when he is near, dismount and use arcane shot (or whatever)
5) wait a bit (not long) and use deterrence so you don't get your @ss killed
6) he should get trapped, try to tame him
7a) find out it's an exotic pet and use /facepalm (MM, SV)
7b) have fun with your new pet (BM)
i got 7a -_-

Tamed this gorgeous creature using the tree-top and freeze trap method at 6:15am Khaz'Goroth server, July 12.
Went to check to see if Ban'thalos had spawned, but it hadn't so was hovering over the top of the Sanctuary of Malorne on my flying mount while I checked the internet for the spirit beast cat spawn points, as I thought I would go check them out next, when I switched back to WoW I caught a glimpse of green wings and my heart skipped a beat.
I hurriedly tried to land on top of the tree, very hard to do with shaking fingers. Finally made it, flew up, fired at it, landed on the tree, and realised I had forgotten to lay down the freeze trap and my 'Tame Beast' was not on my action bar. Ahhhh! Died.
Ran back as fast as I could, hoping that no other hunters were around that early, rezzed. Tried again. Couldn't land on the stupid tree, by this time another hunter looked like they were circling, so I just thought I'd try the fall anywhere and use deterrance. Not quick enough and fell to my death. By this time I was getting pretty scared someone else would tame him out from under me.
Ran back for the third time, finally managed to do everything right. Landed on the tree top, laid down my freeze trap and waited for him to get closer. He flies pretty slowly so my freeze trap had worn off by the time he was halfway around. Dropped another trap. Mounted up. Flew straight up. Fired off an arcane shot, landed on the tree top, cast deterrence, he got caught in my trap and I was able to tame him. Easy when you do it right.
He is now my constant companion and I get comments about him all the time. So beautiful!
My fellow Guildie was camping out Skarr at the same time and he was able to tame him about 15 min later. Two very happy hunters ended up in Stormwind showing each other their newly tamed pets. Very good day!
We now have a competition going with our fellow Guildies to find them suitable names.

Tamed this bird at 12:30am July 12. PVE server.
After finishing everything on my main for the night, I decided to dust off my hunter before I went to bed. I was looking at the new patch 4.2 pets and thought maybe I would camp Ban'thalos. One of those' not expecting anything, but meh why the hell not' type of deals. A quick You tube video showed me what to do and off I went. Of course realizing that it was phased I luckily had completed the Hyjal quests. All I had to do was a few quests to unlock the phase.
Low and behold the second I finished
'The Sanctuary Must Not Fail'
, but the phase kicked in and NPCscan goes off.
A ton of people were all around me and as I looked up there must have been 10 people flying around and many more on the ground staring up.
Now in the video they mentioned landing on a tree. The bizarre thing was with all these people around no one was by any of the trees. I flew up to a tree and tried to land at the top, but ended up missing and falling all the way down. Luckily I didn't die and with 1% heath I got the achievement Going down? Chuckling to myself bandaged up, attempted to land and this time was successful. With Ban'thalos circling around again I put down a trap, flew up and attempted a shot, but a Horde hunter seeing this decided to take a shot at him in a wild attempt to steal him away. In a matter of seconds my heart sank and then leaped in joy realizing that this guy was much to high with no close landing. I crossed my fingers and must have prayed to every God in existence and they must have all answered my prayers because the next thing I knew he plummeted and died on impact. Seeing this as my opportunity I shot Ban'thalos again, he flew into my trap on top of the tree and I tamed him.
It just goes to show you not everyone knows how to get this bird down yet and by taking those few minutes prior to watch and learn it gave me the advantage I needed.

As soon as I logged in yesterday at 3:58 am ST on suramar, there he was flying near me as I was perched on the tree top. I quickly set a Freezing Trap, mounted up and hit the space bar 4 times, I quickly dismounted and fired off an arcane and concussive shot, I got his aggro and quickly popped my macro: /cast deterrance /use Mythical Healing Potion /cast tame beast. It lead him to my trap, then I hit the tame beast button again and he was mine.

Just tamed on Medivh at 21:07. It looked like some tried to tame him first, saw nasty moonfires going off. I was perched on the tall tree on my mount. I flew up and arcane shot him and dismounted. On the way down I dropped an Ice trap, yes, they will stay in mid air. Landed on the tree and lost about 20k health. Ban'thalos hit my ice trap and I began the tame. A few hunters started swarming, but no one tried to shoot at him, which I'm quite greatfull for. Third spawn I've camped, this one was a 7 hour camp. Just had my laptop going while I watched tv, cooked dinner, ate dinner. Almost chocked on my steak when I heard NPC Scan go off. lol GL to all rare hunters out there.

Ok, so I've been camping here for a few days waiting for the kitties (
Magria
and/or
Ankha
) to come out and nothing. I was starting to believe none of this Spirit Beasts where real since i had not seen Ban'thalos either that is with the exception of other hunters pets which was anoying since it kept giving me false pings with NPCScanner.
Today I did a couple of BGs and finish my FL daylies as soon as I was done I zipped back to Hyjal and I see Ban'thalos flying with a bunch of Alliance hunters trying to get on the tree, so i rush over and after several trys i manage to get on the tree myself, tagged him and started to tame (BTW the method is flawless) when a group of the alliance non-hunters tags him to kill him. Ban'thalos started killing them all so i set a second trap, bandaged, drink heal pot and wait till Ban'thalos was done killing the guys below then he comes back at me, I start my tame again and voila, got my new pet.
I was shaking when i finally got it.
TY all for the good advice like I said it worked like a charm.

Any tips for landing on the bleeped tree?
Comment by
Samaramon1
As for HOW to get on the bleeping tree (the hardest part tbh), I found this to be the easiest way.
Use a smaller mount!
For example, Gryphon> Drake. You have way better control to see and set your char directly above the tree spike.
Rotate map
! Make sure you're right above the tree from all angles.
Smaller movements
. It's much easier to adjust if you just go forward, then keep backing up. The movements are shorter, and can help your positioning.
Make sure you track your chars body
. The body of the player should be directly above the tree, not the mount.
Finally, learn from your mistakes! If you fell from one position, don't repeat it. Don't give up, you can't really get it at first, but once you do, things get much easier.
Best of luck! <3

Just spawned at 1am server time on Wyrmrest Accord. Tamed about 15 minutes later.
I attempted to tame him several times, but wound up dying (would have had him the second time but he proceeded to kill me). Ended up having him tamed out from under me by a troll who had just logged on. After he tamed it he came and stood in front of me for five minutes. It was touching.
Fellow hunters: We have enough trouble getting these rare spawns without making it more difficult for each other by being inconsiderate. Let's be a little respectful of each other, maybe? Apparently my karmic reward from the universe for letting a goblin hunter go ahead of me to tame Magria was having the ONE pet I really want tamed out from under me then rubbed in my face. We already have to contend with other players gleefully killing the rares for no good reason, and Blizzard's idea of "fun taming challenges" to get something we've waited hours/days/weeks/months/whatever for.

Alliance or horde, u shouldn't kill a rare in the middle of a tame. That troll can go watch his gay porn and leave the taming of the 4.2 rares to the hunters

Woah that was an intense tame!
Tamed on my hunter at 6:59pm server, US-Crushridge
I'd just got done the quests to open up the Firelands dailies not 20 minutes before. I was sitting there reading up on Magria actually, when I see a yellow dot SLOOWWWLLYYY patting around on my tracking out of the corner of my eye. I hovered over it and seen "ban'thalos" and thought to myself... "no way..." Then Silver Dragon goes off.
I panicked! I flew myself over the half circle pillar behind the quest givers, flew up in the air, hit him with arcane shot, and fell with like 20k health left... died to one of his moonfire things.
Second try, I did the same thing, but when I landed hit deterrence and an ice trap, but died again.
Third try, I fly up, wait for him to come around. Hit him with arcane shot (i'm not an engi, nor did I have any slow fall things or help). Landed with about 20k ish health, but this time my trap gets him quicker (I didn't lay the trap before I tamed, but after I landed).
Some ally came along and tried to either kill him or interrupt my tame (not sure which, I just seen them attacking) and luckily my tame went off RIGHT before I died. A nice pally res'd me and gave me a name for him.. Clover... because I was VERY lucky to have tamed him!

He hit me while I had deterrence going. I died before deterrence ended. My combat log shows that to. I didn't see this in the comments, but I wish I had known before I wasted an attempt expecting this to work.
Scattershot did interrupt it though.
My tame was 12-13 hours after last spotting.

Saw him on my warrior, decided to quickly jump on my hunter (that I rarely play) and try to tame him. After 2 tries (and deaths) I noticed another hunter I knew try and get him, he died but I managed to trap it. Being a nice guy I decided to just trap it and wait for him to grab it, he seemed like a nice guy.
Well the guy tames him and simply flies off without even saying "thank you"
Life lesson, don't bother being a nice guy :p
Then again it is just an Owl... I prefer my other spirit beasts.

Just tamed Banth on Stormrage at just before 3 AM. Was funny for me. I am an engineer so I just used my Flexweave Underlay to tag then slowfall. Died three or four times, but got him with the help of a guildie. All of the hordie hunters came over and /spit on me lol. Was fun and nerve wracking but got this beauty ^^ (very happy hunter). Good luck all!

Just tamed on US Darkspear at 10:48PM ST. Did not see where or when he spawned--sorry, no help there. (Ankha was tamed at 5:05PM on this server earlier that day. No spirit beast spawned between these two.)
The Best Way to Tame
(Tips & Tricks)
Always use
Potions of Speed
,
Lifeblood
(if Herbalist) or any other
Haste increasing effect
. (
Rapid Fire is "Ranged Haste" so I do not believe this effect helps the taming process.
) Place these into a macro to use over and over!
Ban'thalos is flying high above the sanctuary. (
If you just hover over the water of the sanctuary pool, NPC Scan will be SURE to go off if he spawns.
)
When he spawns, fly up to him. You'll need your macro, arcane shot, freezing trap and tame pet handy.
Hit him with arcane shot. (VERY IMPORTANT!)
Do NOT use Serpent Sting
. (
Did this the first time, big mistake.
)
As you are falling,
point your camera downwards
.
Disengage when you're almost towards the ground
.
Lay down
Freezing Trap
and
deterrence
RIGHT away! This guy uses Moonfire to attack you, and 2 hits and you're dead. (Seriously, he's like a rampaging, moon-fire spamming boomkin noob.)
Relax
and take a breath! And spam tame pet! Congratulations, you have a beautiful new Spirit Beast!
This took me 3 times to do. I died twice, then succeeded on the third time! May be best to try to
find him at night
, so there won't be many threats of people trying to gank you as you do this. I had two other Horde pals come watch me as I tamed this, haha.
Best of luck, and happy taming!

Nelf Hunter. Tamed on Caelestrasz at 5:47am ST. Positioned myself at top of tree behind statue, waited for Ban'thalos to come in range, dismounted and tagged her with arcane shot. Landed on top of the tree with minimal damage, set freezing trap and cast deterrence and tame beast macro. Easy tame. She also previously spawned at 10:45am ST and at 12:05pm a few days ago. Hope this helps other hunters on my server.

Can you just tag him then disengage on the way down (a short time before landing) to prevent the fall damage instead of wasting so much time trying to stand on the tree?

I tamed this on Cairne. I was gonna use the tree thing coordinates are 27.26 64.26, but I decided to use a slow fall since the tree can be crowded and I wanted to tame it away from the tree.
I went to Thorium Point and spent a litte time doing the quests to get Evonice's Landin' Pilla. (This quest will spawn in the slag pits after you kill the chaimbermaid)
A day later I went to do some dailies then to my surprise it had spawned. A dk was flying around it i think tring to aggro it. I had put my needed keys in a good order and hit dismount, arcane, then the pillow.. aaaaa a soft landing. I layed out the freezing trap, popped a speed potion and tame once it hit the trap. I had my pvp gear on for the stamina and a health trink if needed. I tamed with about 1/4 health. I named it DiscoInferno since it looks like a light show!

Just tamed on Antonidas.
After about 30 mins of trying to get in that tree last night, I sat and waited for him to spawn. A few other hunters pop by every now and then, and I finally decide to do a random with my boyfriend. Halfway through the dungeon I get a whisper from my hunter friend (Rothshaan, same one that helped me tame Deth'tilac last night and is uber awesome) starts whispering me that the birds up.
I drop group, fly straight up from the tree, wait till he gets within range, pop off a shot, land and hit my trap. He didn't so much as cast his Moonfire attack. Seconds later he was mine!
Rare hunt is finally, finally over. :D

So Ban'thalos was up today 1pm Server time. I was having issue's finding the right tree to land on... A couple other hunters allinace and horde flying around trying to get the tame too, along with other players watching to see who got the tame.
Word of advice for anyone trying to stop the other faction from getting the tame off... DO NOT KILL THE PET KILL THE TAMER! That way if a hunter from your faction or yourself (if you're a hunter) may still have a chance at the pet.
The enemy hunter gets the pull and myself, another friendly hunter and pally all drop onto the original hunter. The second hunter and pally try killing the bird while I am trying to interrupt and kill the enemy hunter. Well enemy hunter gets the tame off only to die one shot later... I swear to god I wish I could have changed factions right there to kill the two dummies not attacking the hunter...
I'll have to try for this pet another day. Good luck to anyone else who is after him.

I tamed this pet today, and then the ZA/ZG random popped up. So I was pretty lucky on that. Went into ZA, group started to have trouble on last boss (It was Lynx/Dragonhawk) switched to BM, and BOOM, goes down after Banny came out. (Not literal, but the healing helped out healer a lot)
about 5 minutes earlier, I had tamed Mag. Do we see a connection spawn?

Last night was my second attempt at taming Ban'thalos. The first had ended in several deaths and me swearing at my computer as a group of Horde thought it would be fun to kill him.
I'd just finished a guild run in ZG and was heading back to the Sanctuary for dailies the next morning. I spotted him flying above and thought I'd give it a go. I've never been able to manage the "stand in the tree" tactic (and although I did ask my other half to try for me, we fell twice) so I went for the "disengage in midair" tactic. I chose a spot as low and as close to the mountains as possible (back to the mountains so you disengage the right way) and then the taming then went something like this.....
1st Attempt
- Succesfully dismounted, tagged and disengaged in mid air. Then forgot where my deterrence button was and died!
2nd Attempt
- As above although at least this time I pressed deterrence. Sadly it was too early and there was nothing to deter, landed got hit with Moonfire and died.
3rd & 4th Attempts
- Managed to dismount whilst out of range, nothing to disengage from, died both times.
5th Attempt
- Dismounted, tagged, disengaged, landed, deterrence, freezing trap, tame beast, died.
6th Attempt
- Reversed deterrence and freezing trap. Seemed to be working fine until for some unknown reason I decided to use a health pot, broke the tame, and then (even with the pot) didn't have enough health for another tame.
7th Attempt
-
SUCCESS!
Dismounted in midair, tagged, disengage, land, freezing trap (although I don't think I actually managed to trap him once!), deterrence, tame pet, then wait what seemed like an age for the bar to go down!
There might have been other attempts in there but I forget.
I've now got a 65G repair bill, no food and another
new name to think of. However I do have a very cool new pet to go play with!
Prior to this I'd decided I was only causually taming the new rares (if I saw one i wanted I'd have a go). Now I need only one more Spirit Beast to have them all so it looks like I'm back to camping......................
(Argent Dawn, approx 00:45 server time)
Forgot to mention....on my previous attempt (the one that ended with Horde killing him) I discovered that if you have a friend with a two player flying mount and they kick you out of it you get a parachute. Bear in mind though that you
can't
dismount, they
have
to kick you out or it doesn't work, no parachute and another death! Just remember to cast deterrence on the way down or that pesky Moonfire will get you! (like it did me)
Again it requires help from friends but it is another option to try............

I never thought I'd be so very thankful to a horde toon for making /rude gestures at me, but yesterday I loved that blood elf hunter (I have a dwarf hunter). I tried once before to get Ban'thalos, but I hadn't researched him, so I (and many other toons around) died many times before some idiot shaman killed him. After researching and many attempts at the "tree top" method, I decided to try the parachute/deterrence way next time.
Yesterday while doing my dailies, there Ban'thalos was circling above the daily hub. He must have just spawned, because no one else had notice him yet. The first three times, my timing was off on my button mashing and I died. By that time, a DK had noticed him and was circling him too. After my fourth death, and waiting for my deterrence cooldown, a mage and other hunters had started showing up. I was fuming watching the timer count down and seeing other people die repeatedly trying to bring him down. On my fifth try, I got my shot, parachute and deterrence off. I landed after what seemed like an eternity, dropped my trap and mashed the tame button. Truthfully, I expected to see a "Release Spirit" button appear - that's what I'd been seeing all my previous attempts - but instead a giant block of ice appeared in front of me, with little hearts floating above me. I noticed another player landing behind the ice, but I didn't dare touch my mouse or keyboard to look at them for fear of breaking the tame. And truthfully, I couldn't take my eyes off the tame cast bar. I kept chanting, "Don't f--- up my tame! Don't f--- up my tame!" I've seen too many jerks out there kill rare pets just to be jerks, or because you got there first.
The tame finished and now Ban'thalos is mine! The other player was the blood elf hunter I mentioned earlier. He /ruded me, but I love him nonetheless and I /kissed him. He could have easily killed Ban'thalos. Thank you, blood elf hunter for not ruining my tame! I love you! <3

I tried the tree trick - problem is I can't find a spot to stand on at the top of the tree.
It seems like a very tiny landing point - I can't find a way to "Stand" there without falling to my doom.
Any tips? Should I get a smaller mount or something? I keep trying to land on the tree-top with my mount, so I know it's safe to dismount for the taming, but I can't find a spot.

If you're using a buddy to help you bring him down to the ground without utilizing the treetop method, make sure you pop off a shot, too, before you freeze him. In my excitement tonight, after a guildie brought him within range, I neglected to do that and instead dropped a freezing trap right away and tried to tame.
There sat Banthy all frozen, but because I hadn't tagged him myself, my tame beast wouldn't work. After several attempts, I gave up and let a fellow faction hunter tame him, since he'd been very classy and was waiting patiently instead of jumping in to tame him while I was still trying. I figured I'd had my chance to tame him, so it was only fair to step back and let someone else have their turn. After Banthy was tamed, I asked him what he'd done to make it work - so, lesson learned the hard way, but at least a nice hunter got him. :)
Realm: Thunderhorn
Time: approximately 7:40pm
Edit, July 24 (Thunderhorn):
- 11:30am (approximately): Banthy tamed by a friend
- 10:40pm (that's when I saw him, not sure how long he was up before then): Banthy tamed by me
I was doing dailies in the area and saw a suspicious cluster of players around the Sanctuary of Malorne. Sure enough, there was Ban'thalos, circling around overhead as if he didn't have a care in the world. At first, I thought I'd try the treetop method, but another hunter was there, not landed on the tree, but hovering next to it. It didn't seem like he was going to go for the tame, but I didn't want to crowd, so I left the tree, and called in the same guildie for backup. No one attacked Banthy while I was waiting, so when he got there, we went for it. Banthy was pulled down to the ground, I remembered to tag him this time, pulled him into my trap, and successfully tamed him. The other players around me were classy and didn't interrupt the tame, so I am very grateful to them. :)
After that, I stripped down to wait for a spirit cat to appear at the 28, 52 area (where the yellow trees are), and less than an hour later, Magria spawned and was successfully tamed.

I really wish that Blizz would make these rares so that non-Hunters can't target them.
Twice now, while flying just above the tree, I've had a DK grip him, then kill it. Sadly enough, it was a same faction DK. Then gloat that they prevented a Hunter from taming it.
I can't think of any other item that can be gotten in the game that can be taken from you by another player.
In truth I feel sorry for those who can only boost their egos by screwing up other players.

Tamed this pet today. I was on another character, and had enough time to log out, log back in, fly over, die on the first attempt, and then successfully tame. Flew up to where he was circling, quickly hit dismount, and distracting shot, then hit my parachute. I was almost dead when I hit the ground, but had a pally with me to bubble, then another distracting shot, and got him. Other hunters were standing around in trees.

Stand on the statue's head
Fly straight up off the statue until u are in range of Ban (high enough til u wont die when u take the fall)
Shoot an arcane shot at him as u fall
Take the damage when u hit the top of the statue after the fall
Lay out freezing trap
Tame
Yes he can be cc'd so no harm done to u when he is in ice :)
oh don't walk off the statue after the tame, it don't tickle XD

I enjoy this story, I had just gotten the flame hypogriff mount of my main and was showing it off to a friend outside the portal to the molten front. while we were chatting he suddenly turns and points out Ban'thalos flying around. I instantly start freaking out and order him to watch it. I instantly jumped to my hunter who i found to be in Storm wind (slaps self) I flew to its spawn. and unlike practice runs I got onto of the tree right away fly up, shoot drop, die. bloody thing its freaking hard. fly back, get on tree, rez, eat, fly up, shoot, drop, ice trap, tame. dont forget a dam ice trap! I named it after my friend who tagged it three of four times before a shaman that was trying to kill it and got himself killed in the process.
sorry for the YAY story but... i cannot resist i like reading these when im waiting at all hours for a spawn

Tamed last night at exactly 10:30 p.m. Server time. Literally when it turned to 10:30 pm on my game clock, NPC scan went off.
He spawned right in front of me while I was standing on the top of the tallest tree behind the Malorne Ruins.
Dropped the Freeze Trap, Mounted up, flew straight up about 5 feet, waited for him to fly a little closer to me, shot him, fell to the tree top, Deterrence, caught him in the trap, Tamed...he never did a single point of damage to me. He never even used his special attack. The easiest tame I ever made.
Right after I tamed him, I immediately went to Magria/Anhkas patrol area and - DING - Ahnka was in the process of being tamed by another Hunter as I flew over.
They must be chain-linked spawns - I'm betting that as soon as I tamed Ban'thalos, Anhka immediately spawned. But he (or she?) was being camped by the other guy, so I missed him.
Easy way to get into the tree safely:
Use a griffon or bat.
Position your mount just above the tip of the tree and make sure tree top point is right in between your character's feet. (Not the mount's feet - YOUR feet while you're on the mount) Then dismount.
That's how I got on the tree top without any problems. Nice view of the valley from up there BTW. lol

my friend who plays on a pvp realm was purposely targeted by an alliance toon so his parntner could just go ahead and kill it and in the process the taming was interrupted ... i on a pve realm, this time horde toons interrupted my process also killing this magnificent beast purely because a hunter wanted it

If you have not done this, do not bother looking for him as you cannot see him.

If you notice the only item they drop is called
Crystalline Tear of Loyalty
, and the description of that item says "The desire to serve as a loyal companion coalesced into a single priceless crystals" and that is the way of Blizzard to say you shouldn't be killing these spawns but instead hunters should tame them (notice the part of : The desire to serve as a loyal companion = A hunter pet)
So yh if a wasnt the first one to notice this sry then i didnt read trough 249 comments ( or something like that) to know if i am stealing someones post or not, but i reached to this conclusion myself so just wanted to put that out there.
PS: There are
10 rare spawns

Just tamed him on Argent Dawn-EU, roughly 4:45am. Followed instructions of using the tree closest to the Shrine (directly behind it), flying up a short bit, firing off a shot, hitting a potion of speed and then casting a deterrence and tame beast macro.
I noticed initial difficulty with the placement of the freezing trap. The first few times, simply laying the trap would put it on the ground at the base of the tree, a long distance below. I tried using the trap launcher to manually place it but suffered similiar issues.
Long story short, practice with placing the freezing trap beforehand. It makes the tame so much easier/possible. I was fortunate enough that the shaman who wanted to kill it couldn't work out how to bring it down.

I had just zoned out after camping for Skarr for a bit... and there he was, flying around! Died about 4 times and fell from the stupid tree another 5 trying to get it right in my nervousness.
I found putting the trap down on the tree THEN flying up removed the chance for a trap to screw you up. You know it is on top of the tree before you ever take off and once I finally got my ducks in a row, he trapped right away for an easy tame.
Then I flew out to Twilight Highlands just for lolz and got Sambas 5 min later. It was a good night

Why Blizzard didn't just make this rare spawn strong and able to one shot people like the spiders in Molten Front is beyond me.

Helped my friend tame this on Ysondre yesterday. NPCscan picked him up so I started spamming all the hunters I knew to come tame him. I pulled him, popped my Skyguard cape and took the starfall to the face. Made it a simple tame for my friend.

Just Tamed on Juebi'Thos
I looked up new pets for 4.2 when Fl first came out. Needless to say i completely forgot about most of them. Lucky a guildie pointed it out and i got summoned there asap.
My guildie was standing on tree "marking" my spot per say. Saw few hunters trying to get on tree but I got on aswell to lay my trap. (This is after I was previously there before I remembered I wasn't spec'd into BM seeming i changed it for some solo Fl trash ) . Guildie attacked it so it would come closer. Luckily nobody decided to be a little @#$%^ and interrupt it whilst i was taming it. And success.
I named him

I'm just a scrub hunter really but I saw this bird and I saw an ally hunter on his flying mount hovering in front of the bird trying to find a way to tame it and I thought to myself "Damn I wanna ninja this bird from that ally" so here is what I did (after 2 fail attempts where I learned about the birds deadly spell that I dont remember the name of...)
I went to the mountain south or southwest of the Sanctuary and found a spot where I could land that was as close to the bird's flypath as possible. The bird was still out of range for all shots etc. and this spot I was standing on was like 10-20 yards lower than the bird's altitude.
The bird keeps flying in a big circle over the sanctuary so when he was closest to my spot I flew straight up on my mount untill I was just a little bit higher than the birds altitude and then flew straight towards the bird untill he was in range to pull, then I just shot him once with serpent sting or whatever to aggro him and immediately disengaged so I went flying backwards through the air and landed on the exact same spot on the mountain where I was before. Then when the bird came closer and started casting that deadly spell I shot him once with scatter shot (I think that's the name... the shot that can be used in melee range and disorients the target for a few seconds... I told you I'm a scrub hunter... anyways...) to interrupt the spellcast and after that I started taming him. He didn't use the spell again and just meleed me for laughable damage while I finished taming.
Anyways... if anyone can make sense of this post and just take a look at the mountain area closest to the flightpath you will figure it out right away where that spot is. The process was really easy and in fact much easier than trying to describe it here. :)
Hope this helps someone... if not... /care

Just managed to grab Ban'Thalos now using the tree method. Pro tip for those of you struggling to get up on the tree:
Use a small mount, Golden Gryphon or a regular Wind Rider is recommended, stupidly huge mounts like Proto Drakes or Firehawks have too big a wingspan for you to aim yourself properly.
Position your mounted character in frond of the tree's trunk, facing the statue of Malorne. Ride the back of the mount up the trunk, repeatedly tapping your backwards key until your character goes over the surface area of the top of the trunk, then to be sure you're on it, press your sit key (Default X) to make your flying mount go down in a straight line, if you're there it will stop on the tree. At that point you're free to dismount, place a trap and get ready to shoot.
Tips for the actual Ban Thalos tame:
Wait for him to fly as over-you as possible, fly up, Arcane Shot and the instant you land on the tree start the tame. It doesn't matter if he's casting Harsh Moonlight, the channel and the damage from the spell doesn't break the tame. Now it's down to RNG for the damage ticks. By the time your tame is about 1/2 or 3/4 done, Ban will be frozen and your tame is secured.
I hope what I've posted helps someone, this tame is easy to lose if you have a lack of HP due to being undergeared - which was the case for my Hunter alt. Ended the tame with about 12000 HP left, I felt like a baller.

Woo!
Finally tamed his at 6:45pm on Jubei'Thos, after 2 weeks of camping!
2 weeks you might say, that's a long time to wait. Well, I had so much trouble getting this, here's a list;
1: Found him, went to tame him, and a guildy came along and tamed him :|
2: Found him, went to tame, and a mage slow falled and killed it
3: Found him, went to tame it, and a DK death gripped him and killed it.
Today I had been camping since 3, and at 6:30 I decided to log over to my shaman to do my dailies. Jumped on, flew to Hyjal and in chat they were saying something about 'in the sky', then I saw Ban'thalos, and a shaman in the tree getting ready to kill it. I quickly logged to my hunter (who was perched in the tree) popped Ancient Hysteria, mount, shot and froze him. The shaman decided to break my CC, and try to kill him. He died, lol, and when he did, it took my a few short seconds to tame him, after which he reincarnated and yelled at me for taming because he wanted 'loot'.
I had many many hunters congratulate me and I gave them the rough spawn point and tips on how to tame, I also had an Alliance hunter /spit on me :)
Must say, this made my day, and all the hunters agreed for 2 weeks I deserved it >.<

I was doing the dailies & saw this pet - no luck as I'm SV/MM. I decided the hearth back & change spec on the chance it might still be there. Lucky me, it was! I just hit it with an arcane shot, hit deterrence on the way down (took some damage), laid a trap, got hit by about 65k moonfire (think I still had some rez sickness though) which left me with perhaps 1/3 health, & finally tamed it.

Camped her for about a full day and a little extra. Logged in after late dinner and she spawns on me like five minutes later! Heart pounding i fly straight up from my tree perch and drop a freezing trap. Remount and fly up to her level, arcane shot her, but the falling damage took too much off at that height. Even Naaru and deterence couldn't save me because she didn't hit the trap. After dying i fly back right away and healed and gave it a 2nd shot. This time i didn't fly up so high and this time she hit the trap, got her easily.

So, the "tactics" about standing in the tallest tree behind Malourne (spelling?), and Lay down a frost trap, mount up, pull Ban'thalos, deterrence on the way down, start taming.
I CAN TOTALLY CONFIRM IT'S WORKING!
You don't need a parachute or something like that. The only thing you need is a hell lotta patience. I got lucky when I logged in one morning, so besides the tactic, Patience!

Confirmed that the Tree method works. Land on the tallest tree, plant a freezing trap, mount up, fire a shot at him, land back on the tree. Wait for him to be frozen in your trap and start taming. His Moonfires hurt very badly, so ensure he's frozen or you'll wind up dead in a heartbeat.
Good luck to all eager Hunters. :D

My hunter has a parachute-cloak (ENG). Died 3 Times. Hovered, dismounted, concussion shot. Popped the parachute, disengaged, landed on statue, frost trap, tame... then a rogue ambushed me (which triggered an insta-tame LOL!
If that rogue only sapped me I'd have been screwed.

A slight hint for rares spawns like this one:
Never camp them for a long time. Simply fly over the spawn spots every day or every other day quite early in the morning (6-9am should do and that's not too early). Your luck will come eventually.
I've been able to catch every Northrend rare that I wanted (Skoll, Gondria, Aotona and now Loque) bar Arcturis (who keeps on eluding me but I will eventually get him) that way. Same goes for most of the Cataclysm rares I caught (Ghostcrawler, Karoma, Sambas, Ban'Thalos, Kirix, Solix, Karkin, Ankha). I only need Magria and Skarr there. I did tame Skitterflame just because I went by the Skarr spawn spot and thought , ah well: taming challenge. Scare beast --> tame, woop. Abandoned the pet right after because it's not a unique skin.
Anyways, just keep on casually looking for them and don't burst your head over the pets.
This morning I'm off to look for Skarr. I find
Ban'Thalos - Tamed on Dragonblight EU, around 8 am today
(the only pet I actually camped for one day after 4.2 came out for seven hours) and start to /who hunter. There's only 3 online including me. Noone even responds, too bad for them. Meh, I go into the portal to look for Skarr: he isn't there. /who hunter again. I get one more hunter popping up. Whisper him, he respecs BM but doesn't know how to tame it exactly. I hop over to Sanctuary of Malorne again and show him exactly what to do. He tames it and he's happy. No fee asked, no fee needed.
Loque'Nahak - Tamed on Dragonblight EU, around 8.30 am today - Northernmost spawning point.
I actually /who'd for other hunters in the area when I started doing my lap. There was one level 83 one to whom I directly whispered (for fun, ofc): "You no take Loque". Of course I didn't ever think I'd find him but I beat the other hunter to it. He took it rather well and I had to check for Arcturis anyway so I decided to check on
Skoll - Tamed on Dragonblight EU, around 8.45 am today
and he was up as well. Whispered the hunter and stayed with Skoll until he was there.
He was still grouped when I decided to check for Sambas when
Karoma - Tamed on Dragonblight EU, around 9.10 am today -
popped. I told him that, he logged another hunter and got it. I decided to do a heroic on my tank for a satchel and then came back for
Sambas - Tamed on Dragonblight EU, around 10 am today
. After a bit of waiting above Victor's Point he just spawned right in front of me.
Moral of the story: always be friendly to other hunters and hint away their spawns. Do not rage over not finding a spawn you're looking for and by that killing another spawn you already have others might be interested in. It all pays off in the end. Don't give up and keep on casually looking.

I've wanted to tame Ban'thalos since I first saw it. NPCscan went off earlier today and luckily I'd already read the taming strategy here so I was able to tame it before any of the other hunters did. I did die several times before I finally got it right ( flew up too high from the treetop ). Thank you for the taming tips! Yay! :) Good luck to everyone else who attempts it!

After doing research on wowhead and other hunters had mentioned the Tree method i thought i would give it a go.
Camped the tree for about 3 hours everyday for 3 days and no sign, so today i was on a mission and refused to leave the tree.... i spent 6 hours there, and off goes my npc scan. Now i thought the tree being used seemed just a little too simple but thought give it a go as soo many hunters had used this..... EASIEST tame i have ever had.........
key bound my ebon bird and arcane shot and used a macro once i had relanded on the tree. my Freeze trap was in place before going up.... i lost about 17k health when i dropped back to the tree .
#showtooltip Tame Beast
/use Potion of Speed
/cast Deterrence
/cast Tame Beast
FROSTMANE -EU

next on my list is Skoll, i already have Arcturis, Gondria and Loque'nahak ... then Ankha/Magria will be next

For those who struggle with the tree method and do not have a handy slow fall on hand I found the mountain slope right behind the statue a great place to set yourself up. I just lined myself up to it ( I set myself a little higher than Ban'thalos so I wouldn't miss it), so when it came by I arcane shot + disengage right onto it, dropped a frost trap and tame. Happy hunting!

ENGINEERS...the following tip is for you:
Flew up in range just below him, dismounted my flying mount, tagged him with arcane shot, activated parachute cloak tinker (flexweave underlay) right before hitting the ground , popped deterrence and used my belt tinker shield (grounded plasma shield - aka bubble) and dropped a freezing trap as he descended upon me with fury. He nearly killed me before he froze in my trap. Tamed him as nerd adrenaline surged through my veins.
Good luck hunters. He hits hard.

For those of you wondering, you do have to do as many quests as you can until the White Stag is unleashed, its a few quest's after the land changes.
Only then will Ban'thalos be visable, you will know when you have done it because alot human players will appear.

Just got him after spending 17 hours in a row in that stupid tree. I'm tired now.
A few other hunters stopped by every now and then, but they all went impatient after half an hour sitting there. I would be really, really mad if someone else snatched or killed him infront of me, luckily I was the only one around when he spawned. Dropped a trap on the treetop, flew up and aggroed him with an arcane shot. Got hit by two 33k moonfires before he hit the trap.
Finally my stable is complete!

I forget what time this was, but it was friday, aug 19, on Muradin, US. Sadly, I didn't get the tame (was wearing no armour, as I got Ban and the other spirit beasts mixed up) so I died about 3 times, while a nelf hunter tamed it out from under my nose.
So glad that no-one didn't try to kill or ruin our attempts at taming.
We basically took turns, I tried taming first, died, she tried, died, I tried, fell off the tree, got hit with moonfire, died, she tamed it.
Found her 5 mins after I rezzed and sent her a /cheer and some other good emotes.
Time to go camping for this one, only one that I really want, because it looks so cool.

For those folks wanting to get the trinket :
Evonice's Landin' Pilla
Let's say you are fairly new to the game (didn't play vanilla wow) and didn't grind Thorium Brotherhood Rep (much less know who the heck they are) and you are having the worst time ever (like I did) trying to perch in that darn tree. It will take a couple hours.
Go to the Badlands. Start at Kargath and take the quest from the guy who will give you the breadcrumb to Searing Gorge and the Thorium Brotherhood. (Yeah, you have to start there, dunno why.) Then just start doing quests and follow along until you can open up the one for
Mountain-Lord Rendan
. Follow his and those will eventually lead you on a plane into the mountain and stealing pillows. Hang out after you turn in that quest and
Chambermaid Pillaclencher
will show up... She drops
Chambermaid Pillaclencher's Pillow
which will become your trinket when you turn it in.
Another helpful link for the quest chain to get there:
Twisted Twilight Ties
Oh yeah, I did NOT get the owl - saw him, dropped to my death over 20 times trying to tame - saw a hunter perch in the tree (which took me over a half hour at one point, 10 seconds on another) and tame real quick. So this time I want to be prepared. Hence the pillow. Yes, I finally got in the tree, but darn it - that owl really got my goat. So to speak.

Quickie Info:
Location: 27,64
Time: ~12:45 am spawn, 1:10 am tame (I failed a few times)
Server: Suramar-US
Got this feisty birdie at 1:10 am server time on Suramar although he spawned closer to 12:45 am. Several failed fly, attack, fall to a perilous doom deaths later and I read the tip here that got me the tame. Get up on that really tall crooked three behind the Shrine of Malorne (if you're facing the shrine its behind it on your left, coordinates are 27, 64). It's a bit of a challenge to get atop that tiny spire but it can be done. Lay your frost trap down as he approaches then mount up and fly directly straight up, do not move a millimeter. If you move at all, you will die at the next part. Fly straight up until you're at his level. When he's in range, dismount and fire off your tagging shot. If you've done this correctly and not moved you will land back on the tree and take 1/3 health dmg max. Banthalos should land in your frost trap and freeze therefore giving you the ability to tame him. I survived the tame with about 1/3 health left. I'm a draenei hunter so while he was frozen before beginning my tame I quickly popped Gift of Naaru to help with the dmg he deals. I did massive happy dances because at 12:19 I'd just FINALLY found and tamed Ankha! Two challenge/spirit tames in an hour!
Here's also what I learned didn't work in the numerous attempts of taming beforehand. I was lucky there were no other hunters around attempting to tame the bird otherwise I would have likely lost the tame. A guildie pal of mine had the engineering parachute so he would try to tag him then slow fall down so I could get in range of him to tag. Problem with that is guildie would die by being attacked by the bird just as I was in range. I'd get two shots off but Banthalos immediately evaded/reset when guildie died. Now if you have the parachute by all means use it, it will help you take even less damage in the fall back down to the tree. I also couldn't find a way to fall over water, I was never in range but if I could have I think that may have worked. I didn't try disengaging into the water but I see where some people found that to work. Getting up on the tree alone doesn't work; you never come in range. I tried to fall onto the shrine or some other high place and I would survive the fall sometimes but it didn't leave me enough health to survive the tame. Trying to survive the tame without the trap seems also impossible.
Hope this helps and good luck to any fellow hunters out there!

Got him this morning at about 2.45am server time on Lightbringer EU. He spawned just by the Firelands portal near Sanctuary of Malorne. I had been camping for about 8hours sitting in the tree. Almost had a heart attack when he spawned, was praying no one else would notice him.
Be wary, he flies stationary for about 5 - 10secs, then takes what seems like an eternity to reach the tree area.
Flew up, arcane shot, deterrence, tame, new pet. Jumping up and down with excitement.
Be patient, he does spawn. On the lookout for the other rare ones now as they apparently spawn nearby the same time as him.

Just tamed this guy on my tard today, what a beauty.
He is a tough one to tame, iLvL 353 and he almost had me dead before I tamed him. Had the help of a "genuinely" nice priest that was passing by and asked me if I was trying to tame. The priest levitated and pulled Ban'thalos to the ground by me where I began to tame, priest bubbled me then when bubble broke pulled aggro long enough for me to tame. Priest died in process but was of invaluable assistance. Dont think I would have been able to pull without priest.

Just tamed him, using this method:
1. look for the brown tree behind the statue of marlone
2. fly up to the top and wait for him to cross your path
3. shoot him and drop
4. as you are falling disengage
5. when you hit the floor (if timed right you will survive with at least 50% hp) just lay an ice trap
6. tame away :)
enjoy your new pet

Method used:
Used the tree behind mal's shrine. Was yanked by a friendly priest to the hill within 30 yards of said tree and watched a lock, boomkin, and hunter die trying to take it from me. Tossed a trap on the dead bodies and tamed away.
Now to think of a good name.

I came across someone trying to Ban'thalos a couple of days ago but the hunter died in the attempt because he took way too much fall damage. He tried to use the building behind the statue of Malorne rather than 1 of the trees. I shot Ban'thalos from 1 of the trees before he went back up in the air so he aggro'd on me and then started taming... No freeze trap or anything.
Just found him again and was trying to help another hunter till some mage showed up trying to kill it and failed... Unfortunately some other hunters then showed up and managed to get the tame ahead of the guy I was helping :(

Had it spawn around 1AM Server Time after nine hours of camping. But, that's not the reason I'm posting this. There are a lot of negative posts about what non-hunters have done to hunters trying to tame this pet on here, but I have a positive post (though slightly negative).
When Ban'Thalos had finally spawned for me, after all of the 'false alarm' npcs scans going off from other hunters in the area having the pet already, felt my heart drop for a few moments after having practically no activity for that long and only watching Netflix/Hulu on my other monitor. I quickly flew up in the air and pulled him down with an Arcane shot. In the heat of the moment, I forgot my frost trap and died.
DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
Don't make the same mistake that I did and do something that dumb after waiting so long just to get the beast. But, this is where the actual story begins.
When I finally returned to the tree and revived myself, it wouldn't allow me to revive in the same position in the tree so I had to revive near the trunk. At this point, two fellow horde players had noticed the rare spawn. In my head I'm assuming the worst and that they were going to kill it. After sending a simple message to them about not killing it and even offering to pay them gold they said don't worry and that they wouldn't take any money from me. Sure enough, they invited me into a group and they were insisting on helping me get the spirit beast. It was becoming harder and harder to get back up in the tree... after trying summons, mass resurrection, and other techniques that a warlock, druid, and hunter are capable of we came to the conclusion that the only way to get in the tree is to do it yourself. With how nervous I was.. it wasn't easy to land in the tree properly.
With how much time I was wasting getting into the tree, we attracted the alliance attention and a death knight had attempted to kill the spirit beast. After getting killed twice, she noticed that we were going to try taming it and then went to attacking me. The Death Knight had brought another hunter with her, or at least that was in the area, and they both had started to attack me. The druid and warlock quickly jumped in and held them off while I finally managed to get myself in the tree again. I dropped a trap immediately, jumped in the air and arcane shot un one last desperate attempt to stop me from taming it the death knight dismounted mid air and tried to attack me but... fitting enough fell to her death as I finally captured Ban'thalos or as I'll call him now, Odin.
To the Warlock and Druid who helped me: Thank you SO much. I know that you probably will not ever read this message but I am truly in your debt. And, please remember WoW players... even if there are players like the ones that gave me trouble and who were attempting to stop the tame... there are also players like the Druid and Warlock who were literally doing everything in their power to ensure it was not killed and it was tamed. They wouldn't accept any type of monetary reward (which I had offered numerous times, and I don't blame you guys if you wouldn't do the same for nothing)... true good people and friendly players. If you're not a hunter.... please do not kill this Spirit Beast. The only thing it drops is the 25g gray, which isn't worth the effort you have to put into killing it.
I wish best of luck to the rest of you on your hunt for Ban'thalos and please remember...
DON'T FORGET TO TRAP.

Sit in the tree to left left of the statue, and wait for the spawn. Lay a freezing trap down. Fly up in the air (STRAIGHT!), and shoot ole Banny. You'll fall right down to the tree, where he should follow and become trapped. If he casts moonfire, use deterrence before taming.

Came across Ban'thalos last night (or should I say 2am BST) and luckily I was on my hunter. Quick change to my BM spec then spent more than 30 minutes trying to tag it but was never in range. Tried sitting in a tree but didn't work for me (may have been in wrong tree). Finally found a kindly Paladin who helped tap it and bring it down for me to train. My first Rare pet and really pleased with it, was worth the time and hard work :-)
I also paid the Paladin a fee for helping of course.

Literally just tamed this for a hunter in my guild and what a battle it was! Tamed on Azuremyst EU at 13.40pm Realm Time
The hunter tamed it from the shooting desent, missed the pillar where our healer was and died. It turned on our healer as she put a heal on the huner as they fell. It eventually killed her but it was picked up by me (Pally Tank) who taunted it and dropped a Judgement to keep it just as the healer was dying.
It almost killed me but I did Lay on Hands to stay alive until the Hunter got back to their body. They laid a Freeze trap down just behind me and shot it as soon as I died and tamed it.
If you know a Healer and a Pally Tank maybe try having them help you out on taming this one.
EDIT: Forgot to mention realm and server time for taming purposes.

Tamed Ban`thalos today, 21.00 realm time, at Sanctuary of Malorne(Darkmoon Faire EU).
Was a pain trying to figure out how to aggro it down without dying, but an alliance warlock, who actually tried to kill him, did it for me...and he died trying to ruin the tame. He tried it twice, but second time I was faster and manage to tame it before "reset":) So thanks to a failing warlock, Ive got an awesome pet ^^
Actually had a mage coming to help me with Slow fall, but didnt need the help after all;)
Tamed Ankha and Ban`thalos today. Been very lucky with spawns since last friday. Got 6 spirit beasts and a Terror-turtle :D
Happy hunting!

Since I'm an engineer I just waited till he was close to the cliff side nearby the tree that was suggested to stand on. Shot the bird mid air and disengaged and parachuted so that I would land on the cliff. I popped deterrence idk just incase laid a trap at my feet then tamed the bird.

I just got this lovely pet about an hour ago... I zoned back in from the Firelands, and my silverdragon went off. I looked and saw that it was Ban'thalos, and my heart jumped for joy. I hadn't planned on camping this guy till after I had managed to kill Aeonaxx, but with this shiny little opportunity staring me in the face, how could I ignore it? I flew around for a few minutes, watching him, and then settled down on the tree. I placed my trap, and well, I didn't have to fly very high above the spot my trap was at. I dismounted manually, and shot him. I dropped down, barely taking any damage at all, and started my tame. I didn't get hit except by a very small melee, which was 4241dmg. I know people say he attacks with a moonfire like attack, but I guess I got lucky, lol. For all you hunters out there, this tame is A LOT EASIER than you think. GOOD LUCK!

Just tamed on EU Azuremyst at 11:41pm (realm time). Used the tree tactic, but as soon as I shot him and landed on the tree he charged me and knocked me off the top. Fortunately I had flexweave underlay on my cape and was able to keep from dying. The moonfire dmg he does is very strong, but can confirm that scatter shot does silence it for long enough to trap him.
Just another quick note, he did spawn at exactly 11:40pm after many hours camping the spot. Anyone else seem to be seeing the rares show up at 20 and 40 past the hour? All my tames seem to always spawn at those intervals. Also, a thank you to a hunter on my realm who gave me valuable information and tips, you know who you are :)

Ban'thalos spawned about 6:28am server time on Antonidas.
My friend and fellow hunter didn't have this one, so I immediately starting calling trying to wake her up. I literally sat for an hour watching him fly in circles till she saw I was trying to reach her. (Does this guy even despawn?) Thankfully, she was able to get up into that god forsaken tree and tame him. :3

Here's what I just did (which won't really help you at all unless you're an Engineer)
I have the Parachute enhancement to my cloak, so I flew up near him and did:
dismount
concussive shot
parachute
... in quick succession
then dropped a Freeze Trap when I landed.
I took a chance and kept the Auto Shoot going so I could disrupt that nasty spell of his and, when he froze, I tamed him.
Too bad neither he nor my core hound can be used in MM, but ... /kanye shrug ... who cares; I was planning on giving BM a try while doing Heroics anyway
good luck!

Tamed at 12:20 p.m. EST on Ghostlands server. It took me eight different attempts to tame this guy - first tried to just blast him out of the air, but the ground and I had a disagreement, and the ground won. Next, had a couple of helpful priests try to give me levitate and the priest bubble, but that didn't work as well as hoped (priest heals would steal aggro). Tried slow fall with a mage, still no luck, Ban'thalos' attacks are brutal. Finally watched a video on YouTube about the taming process and was able to do it. Have to stand on the top of a really tall tree that's just behind the stone arches (that took several attempts/falls), set a freeze trap, fly up so you're in range of Ban'thalos, then dismount/shoot him, land on the tree top, use Deterrence and then tame. My heart was racing through this process, but it was nice to finally get him.

Tamed Ban'thalos at
5:00pm Ream Time - Dawnbringer
This one took a bit of hard work and thinking to figure out how to tame 'em. Just flew to Hyjal to do my daily's well low and behold, Ban was flying around with a Mage, Hunter and Shammy circling him, trying to figure out how to bring him down.
I noticed they were trying to pull him into the water - but the mage was dying before the Hunter was in range to tame.
I was with my boyfriend at the time, and we figured out a pretty abstract strategy to tame. I was standing on the Colosseum - right behind the large Elk statue, we timed it so my boyfriend would aggro Ban'thalos and would fall near me (since he is a Rogue he took reduced fall damage, which helped a lot considering that Ban'thalos' ranged attack does quiet a bit.)
Freaked out a bit at the end, because the Mage and Shammy were hovering around - and I did not know if they would try to pull aggro - however they did not - so as soon as I was within ranged I pulled aggro with an arcane shot and started to tame.
he hits like a truck and a half
at 119k I was left with 43k - the only reason I was able to survive the tame was because at the last second he got caught in my frost trap. I also had a haste potion on (Increases haste by 45 for 1 hour)
Again, its a very abstract method that I doubt can be duplicated unless your friend is either a Rogue or has anything that can slow their fall while taking the moonfire-esk attack that Ban will put them thru.
At the end of it all, named them Hope and very happy with his tame :)

It is my alt and I am not very skilled in hunters, so here is what I did and failed:
-I tried the sitting on tree tactics but I was panicking so much because I was afraid of other hunters on the area or gankers that I failed hard.
-I tried the parachute tactic with the trap down and he would kill me before he hit the trap or I he would get trapped after I died. (if you die while he is trapped he will evade, even if you attack or trap again)
Here is what worked:
A guildie tankadin was on the area, so I aggroed the bird and parachuted when near the ground, the paladin taunted it as he was in range, so I didn't get much dmg. I popped the trap, the paladin dragged it to the trap and I tamed.
I know it is fail, but worked for a bad skilled hunter. :B

Got him about 3am ST on Dragonblight,
Went crazy and had a heart attack ect lol...
Couldn't land on the branch as he was circling back round ><, finally managed it, summoned my arena team, which wasn't the best idea as they got aggro and had to die before i could tame, so trapped him in a freezing trap, cried for a certain amount of time before my friend jumped off and died lol.
But beautiful pet, definatly worth the wait :)
Just try not to panic xD

No one responds and a who of Mount Hyal revealed Pallys!
So anyways i proceed to tame, i stripped naked and get on my mount and fly up, 2 Alliance Druids & 2 Horde druids are circling it, I said "TODAYS MY DAY!"
1st Attempt: Failed
2nd Attempt: Failed
3rd Attempt: Failed
At this point the druids are LOLing at me and one says "give it up?" i respond with "NEVER"
On my fourth attempt i shot and disengaged near the mountain, i surived with 50% health, I put a frost trap down and i proceed to tame, Hes frozen! *SUCESS* or so i thought
A smart ass hunter from allaince decides HE wants it and breaks the ice block, The owl is still in my threat, The timer goes down it ends, and i have my brand new Spirit beast!

I watched a Druid pull this owl and plummet to his death 3 times. Epic fail for 25gold and no achievement.
I wasn't even going to bother taming it as I have kept the same pet for about 5 years.. but I used the good old hunter tactic, stood on the statue's head, laid a frost trap, flew up, dropped my mount and arcaned him on the way down.. Tamed. Stunning looking pet. Took it and solo'd a Fiery lord. Exotic pet collector or not, this bird just looks amazing flapping around in Orgrimmar and with mend pet it can really hold it's own.

Tamed earlier tonight. Must have died 5 times total before finally getting the sequence of dismount, hit, use parachute cloak, set trap, tame. Agonizing too, waiting for my rez timer each time before I could come back, heal up, and try again. There was another hunter in the area who had apparently been trying to tame as well, proceeded to give me grief when I pulled off the tame, like I ninja'd his pet or something. But I have a hard time feeling bad about it, given that he had 5 opportunities to tame him when I was dying left and right like a noob!

Just tamed him with the help of a mage. Misdirect on mage friend to take first aggro. Mage died, but I was able to trap & tame.
- Hits like a truck (did about 30k damage on me per hit)
- Deterrence does NOT work.
Died lots of times, both from birdy as from falling damage (pop parachute a bit too late... stuff like that).

Got the tame on my hunter 9:35 am server time. Garona server.
Used the tree method with track beasts on, and I saw it spawn waited till it was a little closer then dropped trap and flew up tagged with concussive shot to slow it and dropped to tree and waited for the trap and waw law the tame was mine. No damage except minor from the dismount to treetop. Another player was in the area but was on the ground in front of the sanctuary so could not pull aggro once i got it tagged. Good Hunting & Taming to ya all.
UPDATE: While camping Magria this evening, Ban'thalos spawned again at approximately 11:00 pm server time on Garona.

I was camping him for hours... I even had my position perfect on the tree. I have NPC scan so I turned my volume up and alt-tabbed so I could browse the web while waiting. At around 4am I hear the noise go off.. I almost had a heart attack. By the time I tabbed back Ban'thalos was NOWHERE in sight and I see this other hunter off in the distance. I have no clue if they tamed him or killed him... I can't believe how quick they did it apparently. Or they could have already had it and pulled it out to troll my NPC scan. It's so frustrating waiting all night >_>
UPDATE: I just got him at around 8:25am! My first attempt, the trap failed after I hit him and tried to lay one down. Put the trap down BEFORE you pull. Then I arcane shotted, hit deterrence (he cast a moonbolt right away), taming him while trapped. This pet is amazing and so unique! A happy ending to my awful boring night. Don't give up and good luck

So I decided to do the quest to open the fireland dailies and wow he was still up, so I flew on the tree and took a shot at him to bring him down to my freezing trap and tamed him.
Was shocked he was still up for well over a hour.

Just tamed this beautiful owl at 2:38 pm on Burning Legion! I had heard that he only spawned on the hour, and have seen this with the other new rares, but I guess it's not the case!
Funny thing is, I had just found Deth'talic for a guildie, so I helped him tame it. Almost instantly after he tamed the spider, Anthriss spawned (which sadly was killed). I told my guildie I had been wanting this amazing owl, so he showed me how to get onto the tree. My previous attempts failed because his moonfire ability killed me before he got in my trap (I had tried the disengage in the air method).
So I got on the tree, sat there about 15 min, and he spawned! Most amazing bird ever <3
So, with this luck, I headed to Storm Peaks, because I've been wanting Skoll..and he was there too! Gonna go buy a lottery ticket I think =D
If you can get into the tree, it's the easiest way I think. Place Freezing Trap, fly up, dismount, arcane shot, deterrence, tame beast and enjoy! <33 I don't think you NEED deterrence, but it helps with the extra damage. He only had 1 attack before he got in the trap. =)
Oh, and if you are trying the tree method and having trouble, try using a smaller mount. I used my gryphon and it worked perfectly. Makes it easier to see the top of the tree =) And just line yourself right above it. It took me a while, but it was well worth it.
Good luck all! <3

I didn't have a cape or anything to slow fall me so this is how I did it.
If you line your body with the very tip of the crooked tree (not the ones on the left side of the monument, the crooked one on the right side of it) by changing your angle to where you are looking up at your character it is easier to find the center of the tip of the tree and get "stuck" on it. Place your freeze trap and then target Ban'Thalos. Mount up and press the space bar to glide up and get in range of Ban'thalos. Next press the X button to move down as close to the tree as you can without losing him in your range to shoot. Wait, on the next pass shoot him and you will fall down to the tree. When he starts casting moonfire hit him with scattershot to interrupt and then start taming immediately. I got him on the first try of doing this after nearly 6 deaths trying it a different way.
Happy Hunting!

Yes, and you can only get Ban'Thalos during the phase.
You cannot get him beforehand, as the shrine is on fire. Why would -any- owl even want to be there?

ok here is simpler way to do this: fly right up to him, dismount mid-air,shoot him, at the last sec pop ur parachute (or slow fall), soon as u land pop the freeze trap and start charming! I got frustrated trying to get on the tree, this worked 1st time
........lemme know if this works for any of you. BTW i named him Habrok which is Norse for "the best hawk".

So my boyfriend spots this lovely beast at around 1:30 a.m. server Tanaris and lets me know that he's up. I switch to my BM spec and have him Have Group me, when I fly up from the crooked tree and hit tame, to which he swiftly kills me. I rez pop some haste pots and food and try again only to die. This second time another ally hunter is watching me, and she puts down a trap.....and stands there. My bf offers to pull her off the tree with Leap of Faith but I tell him no if the other hunter gets the tame than she is simply the better of us. She doesn't fly up or anything so I try again this time setting down a trap before-hand (I thought none of the new rares could be trapped) and I start the tame. Other hunter of course attacks it, breaking my trap, and is quickly killed. I pop another trap and tame again gaining my new pet :D just goes to show it's better to be on the highroad.

Just tamed him on Graymane at about 9am server, had the help of my bf and his paladin, he flew up and got aggro them bubbled as he fell to make a nice landing and I just grabbed aggro from the ground as he came down with my tame beast, his moonfire hurt took me down to half health with one hit, no need for a frost trap though because my tame beast was faster before he could do anything else.

Tamed Ban'thalos @ 9:47pm on Dawnbringer
Easy tame for me as there was no other hunters near by at the time he popped. For some reason my NPCscan never even went off and I had been camping the zone for about 2-3 hours while looking through some websites and doing some reading. When I looked back he was flying around near me and I started to panic a bit since my NPCscan never went off. Again, lucky nobody else was around!
Pretty much did what most have done. Got up in the tree, mounted, went up, arcane shot him, fell down, put out my trap and hit tame asap. Didn't take very much damage at all from him or the very short fall. By the time I had gotten up there he was pretty much close up to me.
Very beautiful pet and I'm one happy hunter to have gotten him so easy :) Good luck out there to all the hunters looking for him!

Got him on Zuljin the other day at spawn point. It was 0130 server time.
1 other hunter was around and he was trying the whole tree thing. He kept falling off and the bird never got close enough for him to tag. I watch the hunter try and try and finally asked if I could give it a try. He said go ahead. I knew the tree thing wouldn't work so I got in the spawns flight path and dismounted my flying mount. I took about 100k fall damage.
I'm a new 85 so I was left with about 5k health left. I did this a couple more times to judge where I should fall after the tag. I decided to fall on the wall like thing around the monument that is near the flight path. I flew up to Ban, tagged him, fell and took that damage, dropped frost trap and tamed. He didn't cast on me thankfully. Anyways, should be easy if you do it like that and have any type of health pool. GL

Took about 45 minutes. I tried the tree tactic, but I just sunk right thru them. He was there first thing after i completed the quests for this area. He had me down to like less than 10% health.

There is a very simple way to tame Ban'thalos. First target this little beauty then land on Malorne's head close to his antlers. Eat some skewered eel to boost your stam and when you see him on your mini-map coming close to where you are, place your ice trap between his antler's and mount your flyer. Fly straight up a little ways, without moving forward or backward, until your Arcane shot becomes usable. Dismount, arcane shot and he will fly down to you without even using his moonfire ability. I drank a healing pot quickly when I landed (just in case). When he came down to me, I used deterrence and my ice trap went off. I tamed him. When you drop from your mount, you aren't high enough to sustain much damage because you'll land on Malorne's head and a healing pot will do.
Mind you, after spending almost 100g to repair from dying and following the advice to disengage and hit the water, and try to find a tree to sit in, this seemed to be the best solution. It took one try and I had him. What a beautiful pet! All you hunters out there, enjoy him...he's awesome!

First five attempts I flew up, tagged him with arcane shot, then hit disengage to land in the lake. He killed me before he got into taming range.
Next I tried landing on the big tree south of the statue, took a few minutes. Waited for him to circle around, layed down a freezing trap, flew up, dismounted, tagged with arcane shot, and hit my deterrence / tame beast macro. Landed on the tree, he was frozen, and now I have Ban'thalos. ^_^
On top of tree with freezing trap.

Ugh, this guy was a NIGHTMARE to tame, ended up getting a priest to give me a hand, I placed a freeze trap on a hillside within disengage distance so that when I pulled him and disengaged I took around 50% fall damage, the priest then kept me healed up while I was taming (the freeze trap broke the second I started taming him)
Having a healer around to heal/shield you is a DEFINITE help with this one.

Just solo tamed Ban'thalos, I thought I'd share my way with you fellow hunters that would like to tame this spirit beast.
Have it focused so you are able to see it's cast bar for Harsh Moonlight, which hits for a truck most likely killing any player in 6-8 seconds. Fly directly below it, as low as possible while your shots are still in range, try to make sure your over higher ground to make life easier, because once you've done one shot at it, you need to be able to reach the ground in less than 5 and a half seconds at normal falling rate. Just before you hit the ground (perhaps 10 yards roughly above it,) hit disengage and don't move. Watch the focus target cast bar for Harsh Moonlight, right at the end of the first cast hit deterrence, then lay a freezing trap while deterrence is up. Just simply wait until Ban'thalos gets frozen in your trap, then start your tame beast cast.
Sorry about the wall-o-text, I think if people are really that interested, they won't mind reading 8 lines of text.
Best of luck.

I had said to myself I was never going to tame any more spirit beasts after I got the 4 Northrend ones, I was going to wait until I had an alt hunter to get the cata beasts.
I also thought that Ban'thalos was rather pretty yet never thought i'd get one due to it being awkward and a hard hitter.
However that all changed yesterday when I tamed one.
My mind changed because the first time I saw Banny was when while talking to Matoclaw it spawned above me. I've only had 2 other rares spawn while I was on their spawn point and one of those was a non tameable blazewing. So this seemed like a special occurrence to have the first time seeing him be him spawing on me. However I let him be and went my way.
I saw him 2 more times after that and then a 3rd time (day before yesterday) where I decided i'd grown rather attached to him and tried getting on the tree. However that failed and a couple of Blood Elves came along and stole the spot.
Yesterday, yet again I was lucky enough to find him flying overhead just from handing in my dailies and this time there were no other hunters around so after two failed attempts I got on the tree and waited for him to fly over so I could tag him then freeze, then tame! He didn't even begin casting his special move.
So yes I am pleased and unlike with Black Madexx I don't have that feeling of discomfort from taming something I never set out to tame although it did mean my stable was full and had to release my Humar since i'd
