Spawned at 46,05, 25.05 for me after about 30mins looking.

He was up on Zanj'ir Terrace ledge, nearby the Blacktalon Watcher NPC

Found him at 50,19 sitting underwater.

Edit: Found again at 70,24 beneath the waterfall in Deepcoil Tunnels.

there are a handful of nazjatar rares that have respawns seemingly linked to normal, non-rare mobs —
• Glimmershell Hulk → Iridescent Glimmershell (confirmed)
• Lost Algan / Wayward Algan → Rockweed Shambler (confirmed)
• Sea Spireshell → Amethyst Spireshell (likely; i was able to force a spawn of the rare by killing the normal mob)
• Muck Creeper → Mirecrawler (likely; i was able to force a spawn of the rare by killing the normal mob)
• Garnetscale → Razorshell Turtle and possibly Snapshell Tortoise (curiously, this sometimes just spawns near these turtles' spawnpoints, so i can't say definitively whether this one is linked)

i've also heard rumors that Soundless is tied to killing normal ray mobs. while i have seen the rare more often on days when quests like Feed Them All/Feed Them All are active, i'm not sure about that one. i haven't taken to slaughtering fields of fathom rays to test the theory yet, so my experience is anecdotal. also, it could be a case of "correlation does not imply causation"—am i seeing the rare up more on those days because it's spawning more, or am i seeing it more because i'm in the area more to complete the quest(s)?

needlespine most closely resembles the chitterspine crabs that spawn around Avarius, the cave that houses Caverndark Terror, and various other underwater caves peppered around the zone. the difference between this and the ones listed above is that the needlespine rare itself doesn't seem to spawn super close to most of those areas. where you can force a spawn of an iridescent glimmershell by murdering a bunch of glimmershell hulks and it could respawn in that specific mob's place (assuming no one else is doing the same elsewhere on the map), that wouldn't happen with needlespine because there are no chitterspine crabs directly on top of any of its spawnpoints. the closest one i could find was a spawn around 70.5, 24.7, right on top of a little waterfall above a cave that has an elite chitterspine and two hidden ambushers.

so, based on its model and the fact that this seems to be a semi-common spawn mechanic within nazjatar, needlespine's respawn could be based around the killing of chitterspine crabs throughout the zone... but it'd be very difficult to test without a group of folks murdering crabs and another group of folks camping/milling around its various spawn areas. i hate to think that this is just a random spawn on a 30- to 60-minute (or longer...) timer that could pop up in any of 7+ places, but who knows!

anyway, those are my numerous thoughts about this rare that i've found up not even a handful of times, that dies ludicrously quickly because it's easy to solo, and that drops a pet that i want. i'd be interested to see if anybody attempts Operation: Crab Murder in a group and if anything comes of it.

the tl;dr is: it's possible that needlespine is linked to chitterspine crab mobs, but it's also possible that i'm desperately searching for a pattern where there is none... because i want a hideous crab pet.

eta: if you have a lot of free time, or if you have a lot of time for passive playing (like, if you want to camp rares while watching TV or working or whatever) then the best spot i've found to camp out for needlespine is in the middle of these three spawnpoints:

/way 47.0 30.6

they form a little triangle slightly southwest of the tidal conflux, and you can get a notification for any of the three from the rare scanning addon of your choice if you find a spot to chill as close as you can get to the center. i still have no idea if needlespine's spawn is linked to other mobs or if it's just on a timer, but i had decent luck camping out in that area for the spawn. good luck to everyone!

If your character is low geared, or a tank, or both, you can look forward to a long fight due to his shield/absorb/heal ability.

Found him in the early morning, after already passing by the spot once earlier when he was not there yet. Couldn't see anyone killing the crab mobs, it was fairly quiet, only 10 people in the zone. Warmode off.
