Took me 17 cast to catch this right out side of garrison in Frostfire

I just fished this up our of the lava outside of the garrison - I stood for ages without getting any, then I moved a bit (so that I was technically in Frostfire Ridge, and not the garrison), and then I caught one almost instantly.

I think you might have to stand far enough outside of your garrison so that you dont see the garrison map when you press M, otherwise you won't be considered to be fishing in Frostfire Ride.

Ride until you're outside your garrison's map zone (you should be in Frostwall Approach), and fish in the lava there.

Note: You can use a lure at the same time as Nat's Hookshot Bait, but you can not use bait (i.e. Fire Ammonite Bait) as it overwrites Nat's bait.

Took me 37 casts. It seems to have roughly the same catch rate as the rare quest fish from MoP.

Make sure you have Nat's Hookshot on your pole or this will never be caught.

edit: Paragella points out correctly, you need the Hookshot on your pole if you are on the A True Draenor Angler quest.

I think it would be very important to keep an eye on your quest, rather than the fish in your bags. As alliance I went to a lot of trouble to get to the place where my Horde toons fish for Fire Ammonite, north of the garrison. I had my bags open so that I could see if I caught a lunker, as the place I was watching was the only place anything would go as the bags filled. I tried moving around, fishing pools, adding baubles and sharp hooks. It was not happening. I happened to close my bags and noticed that I had a green checkmark and 1/1 Fire Ammonite Lunker, in my quest text where it showed what was needed for each fish. I looked way back in my chat box and saw where I'd caught the Fire Ammonite Lunker, about 30-40 casts earlier. In total I had about 80 casts. Yes, I checked again and there was no fire ammonite lunker in my bags.

These do not appear in your bags, but you do get quest credit.

As Alliance, getting to places to fish are a pain in Frostfire. Using Wormhole Centrifuge and choosing "Lava and Snow" will often put you near lava (if not in it). Is much faster than flying!

You can fish Lunkers outside of pools.

You can also catch this in Nagrand, the water under Hallvalor.

I sat on one of the bones near 84, 71 Bones of Agurak. You are above any mobs that way.

Caught it at 52.28, 60.18 as an Alliance, just outside the Horde garrison area. Screenshot submitted.

Just go to a Lava pool, and fish. Make sure Nat's Bait is attached.

Don't have to fish in schools, just fish inland :)

Drop rate is painfully slow. It can go anywhere from 1% to 3%. Sometimes it spikes but then it can plummet for 50 casts in a row (or more).

I had almost 1000 fishing skill, with over 300 casts when I gathered the above statistics.

So far I have 25 coins, so 75 more to get the mount, but I went back to Pandaria to get the Nat rep. You would need something like 140 lunkers to get best friends with Nat. (not worth the grind).
