Model Viewer
With Wowhead's modelviewer, you not only can preview in-game models, but you can also view your own characters with updated Warlords models and dress them up in creative armor sets to plan out transmog.
Modelviewer Basics
The modelviewer doesn't live on just one page; instead it can be accessed on many pages via the "View in 3D" button, reflecting that page's unique model or set of models:
Basic database pages
: the "View in 3D" button" brings up that page's individual model--
battle pets
,
items
,
NPCS
, and
objects
.
Item Sets and Transmog Sets
: the "View in 3D" button brings up a character wearing that full set of gear. An
item set
covers items that contribute to a set bonus, while a
transmog set
covers all items that match, like boots and belts.
Search Results
: Click the checkbox next to an item's Name in search results, and then click the "View in 3D" button. Multiple items can be selected at once.
Same Model As
: On the
Related
section of an item's page is the "Same Model As" tab. This shows all items that have the same pattern with thumbnails. Clicking on the image opens the modelviewer, clicking on the name takes you to that item's new page.
Gallery View
: When searching for armor or weapons on
wowhead.com/items
, there's a "Name" tab and a "Gallery" tab for results. Clicking on the images on the Gallery tab opens up the modelviewer. If you usually search from Wowhead's front page, going to "Filter These Results" on the items tab will take you to the special items view.
Character Races and Animations
In addition to displaying NPCs and objects, you can view items like weapons and armor on all character races.
You can view characters in a variety of animations--select one of the options from the the Animation menu at the bottom right of the modelviewer window.
To view a full-screen model, double-click on the viewer. To enlarge or shrink the image, use the mouse scroll wheel.
Dragging your mouse will rotate the image, and Control (Windows) or Cmd + drag (Mac) will pan the image.
You can choose the modelviewer's default race and gender under settings when logged in. Go to you
account page
and select your preferences on the General tab.
The modelviewer supports Original and Warlords versions of character models. So far, we have Warlords models for Gnome, Orc, Dwarf, and male Tauren.
To change the gender, race, or Original/Warlords models, simply browse the dropdown menus at the bottom left of the modelviewer window.
Viewing your character with the updated Warlords Models
With the Profiler, you can see how your in-game character will look in Warlords of Draenor.
To get started, just do the following:
Go to
wowhead.com/list
On the left-hand side of the screen that says "Battle.net", enter in your character's name and select their realm and region from the dropdown menus.
That's it! You're now looking at a 3D model version of your in-game character on Battle.net, including hair, eyes, and skin color. For Gnomes, Orcs, Dwarves, and male Tauren, the Profiler automatically shows the Warlords of Draenor model improvements.
To return to this page, visit the
My Profiles
section on your
User Page
. You can also look up Profiles while not logged in and see a temporary list at the top right of your screen, but these pages are only saved for 48 hours.
Dressing up your character in any gear
With the Profiler, you can also create and save transmog sets.
To dress up your character, load your character into the Profiler as described above, and then:
Click on the "Battle.net" text to the left of the lock and switch the mode from "Genuine Battle.net Profile" to "Your Own Custom List." Your profile page can now be modified.
To replace or add a transmog, there are two ways you can do it. Left-click on an item's icon and select "Replace Transmog" or Left-click on Modify in the bottom section and then select "Replace Transmog."
If you want to hide a particular item, such as helm or cape, de-select the "Display on Character" option right below "Replace Transmog."
A new pop-up window will appear. As you type in the name of the desired item, the window will automatically bring up matching results.
Click on an item to select it as your new transmog. Your changed items will automatically be saved and visible on the modelviewer.
The transmog column on the Item Summary section keeps track of what items you have transmogged.
To dress up your character in Warlords of Draenor gear, make sure you are visiting the Profiler from wod.wowhead.com so it includes the new items in search results.
If you just want to dress up a 3D Model and don't care if it resembles your character, you can jump straight into making a custom character. On
http://www.wowhead.com/list
, go to the right-hand side of the screen that says "Create Your Own Custom List" and click on
Get Started
and then add an
Equipment Set
tab.
To change a model's race or gender, click on the icon for the character's race on the bar at the top of the Profile.
To change the character's class, which affects what weapons and armor are returned in search results, click on the icon for the character's class on the bar at the top of the Profile.
The lock icon to the left of all of these customization options must be in the "unlocked" position in order for you to change things.
The Profiler can do
many other things
like tracking how many mounts and pets you've collected, but we'll save that for a non-modelviewer post!
Other Resources: Item Comparison
The
item comparison tool
lets you compare stats on gear, but it can also be used to quickly preview gear sets on animated models.
When browsing search results, click the checkboxes next to a bunch of item names and click "Compare."
This opens up the
Item Comparison tool
. Drag all of the items together into the same column.
To add even more items item, select the "+ Item" option at the top right. This brings up a new window. As you type the name of the item in, the window automatically displays item matches. Select the item you want, and then drag it into the main set of items to preview it in the modelviewer.
Click on Link to this Comparison to generate a link to your set of items. Otherwise, you won't be able to link it to others.
Click on the carrot at the top left of a column, and then the View in 3D option.
You can now preview an animated character wearing a unique set of items.
To remove items from a column, left click on that item's icon and drag.
To remove an item completely, right-click on the icon and select the "Remove" option.
You can also quickly add in an item set or transmog set by clicking on the "Compare" button on those pages. This is particularly useful if you want to preview a classic transmog set with a few tweaks.
