You people who are defending the tanks without a def cap, please stfu and go on doing your DPS.
TANKS are the responsible ones in the group. Tanking is about preparation as much as it is about execution. Tanks need to spend EFFORT to be tanks. A tank who is gearing up, and is not def capped, does not belong to a heroic dungeon. He should not queue for it. It is perfectly possible to get the defense cap easilly without running ANY heroics at all.
Tanks with low HP are okay. Everyone had low hp once. You dont really need tons of hp for heroics. Tanks without the defense cap are ignorant fools who dont care about the group. It is perfectly okay if someone refuses to run with an ignorant tank.
I have had numerous people from my realm coming to me and asking for advice. I always told them what the def cap was, and warned them to not tank anything without it.
@skribs: totally justified post...
@people who say l2heal: l2tank, noobs...
@Zokudu: You are an idiot. Describing this statement would take more effort than you are worth though. Stop posting in this topic please.

Thankyou EMTPyros for finally bringing up the rest of the story, couldn't believe it took this long to get to it. If a new tank hasn't bothered to get themselves 535 def and are wearing DPS gear for half (or more) of their gear, that is a huge chunk of avoidance they don't have either. Screw the fact they "might" get crit now and then, they'll be taking so many more hits than they should, that even without crits, they'll be eating dirt in no time.
I do not try DPSing heroics if I know I can't even hit 1k. I don't heal unless I feel that my mana pool and SP will be up to the task. And I certainly don't try tanking a heroic with my 25k or less hp, without hitting 535 def first. It's common sense, and common courtesy to the others in the group. As has been said many, many times already; I can remember when heroics were actually challenging too, and those basic standards don't drop just because we can walk into 232 gear now. Put the minimal effort in, and I will be more than happy to help you gear out in heroics.

It takes a lot of balls to be a tank because you are the blame for mostly everything that happens. It's never anyone else's fault.

We also expected healers and dps to come into Heroics with crafted gear but now they come in and expect to be "carried" by a good tank or a good healer or whatever.
Why is the only role whos standards haven't lessened tanks? Your talking about 3.0 when no one was overgeared but now that we all outgear the instances its impossible to carry a tank but you can carry a poor healer and 3 poor dps if you need too? That is elitism.
And if you say you expect healers or dps to come in with level 80 crafted blues thats a lie you could care less the only people you blame is a poorly geared tank because it directly effects your job as a healer and make you work harder.
QQ MOAR!
I can't tell if you're a troll or simply have… issues. But I'll bite. Yes, I complain about tanks who don't bother working for crit-immunity because it makes my life harder. How would they like it if I threw on random 68-74 greens and tried to heal heroics in a mix of spellpower, attack power and strength gear? And I never said tanks needed to have level 80 crafted gear. Read my posts again. Tempered Saronite. I fail to see why I have to carry a tank, who can't even be bothered to get himself uncrittable, through an instance.
On another note, you have no detailed knowledge of any of the posters here. Claiming that "it's a lie" if we are about the healers' gear just shows how little thought you put into your arguments. Perhaps you're letting your emotions about GearScore or gear checking get in the way, I don't know.
Do you waltz into an instance and look at the healer and dps and if they're in blues or greens complain? Most people wouldn't but if a tank does everyone throws up their arms and calls foul. Most of the community is willing to "carry" dps or healers but not tanks. Tanks are expected to have crafted gear. Its just not fair.
I think Rufwon said it wellIt takes a lot of balls to be a tank because you are the blame for mostly everything that happens. It's never anyone else's fault.
Its never the healers fault its he tanks for not having enough health or enough avoidance even if the healer can and refuses to heal them so they look incapable.

To all tanks: Stop being lazy and buy blues to get the def cap. Not hard.
To all healers: Stop being lazy and actually do something. Not hard.
Seriously. First thing I do when I hit 80 on any toon is buy a full set of crafted gear, which is the minimum recommended pre-heroic gear. If you can't do that, you deserve to get flamed. Don't be a stupid Rambo tank (like what my lvl 25 resto shammy is running into... good god that's annoying) and try to chain pull when you can't take the hits. And healers, dear god you actually have to click buttons? The world is surely at an end. My FoL crits for 1/3 of low geared tank's health, so it's way too easy to keep people up. Not to mention you healers with HoTs out there... lol. Stop running heroics then if you're just going to complain.

I remember when I started doing hc's in the start of wotlk.
I got a group of guildies that also were recently dinged 80's, I wasnt def capped and I was using the frost resistance gear since it was still dirt cheap to make at that time, the entire group was in blues and greens. Still we managed to clear most of the heroics, and there wasn't any magical uber geared tank to carry us so I could just need on the tank gear as dps. So why wouldent you be able to pull it off if you are overgeared for the content?
Saying that you wont even bother trying to heal is just being lazy from your part and expecting to get icc geared tanks to carry you trough the instances. So if you dont want to heal someone thats atleast trying to do something why dont you queue as a dps and let someone else that actually knows he/she can heal someone that recently dinged?

It seems whenever I queue for an instance on my resto druid, I end up getting tanks that just hit 80 that day, who are at 22-23k HP and have <440 defense skill. Now, I know tanks back in the day had 22k HP, but we also made sure to have 535 defense before heroics. I've been refusing to heal these people, but the result is a 30 min debuff. And then when I get back in queue, I get another nooblet tank!
They always have a friend that says "Just heal him lets go" so I can't get group support against the tank, but at the same time I am NOT healing someone who isn't defense capped. Anyone else running into this issue a lot?
honestly from reading this all i feel is that you sir... Are one HELL of a ^&*!@#bag, some a new at 80 some dont have gold or experience to know how to get the good gear asap. Stop being such a baby and go through with it. Give them
helpfull
advise if they dont have the appropriate skill. Thats what the dungeons are for, learning and gearing up (besides having fun ofc.)
but my honest oppinion is, the problem is
you
not "nooblet tanks" NOT the group not supporting you, but you!
just needed to vent.

Speaking as a tank I disagree on one point only, and that is that any tank worth their salt NEEDS to be defcapped. 530 for level 80 regular dungeons, 535 for heroic dungeons, 540 for raids. There is
no excuse
for not being defcapped as a tank and running heroics or regular 80 dungeons;
NONE
. Everything else is excusable: Mostly blues/quest greens, still learning your rotation, not having 30K unbuffed health. All of these are part of the "gearing up" process. But not being defcapped shows two things:
1) The person in question has not researched how to tank properly, and has little clue on what they're supposed to do besides "soak hits"
2) They're lazy. It is not hard to be defcapped when you hit 80. For plate wearers (Druids are obviously a special case and have a talent to make them uncrittable, they don't need defense at all) just buying the Tempered Saronite armor set at level 78, and tossing in a few low-level gems and enchants is more than enough to take you through some basic heroics and the regular level 80 dungeons. Yes, that costs gold but on most servers it's not that expensive; each piece only runs you about 40-60 gold each, so for the whole set you're looking at maybe 300g or so.
The reality is that tanks
do
have more responsibility than other group members, and anyone who wants to tank needs to understand that. With great power comes great responsibility.

I'm yet to find a group willing to help me on my tank. I have 542 defense and 25.6k HPs unbuffed but the instant I zone in as the tank into a heroic people start quitting because my tank isn't good enough.
The OP is correct, hey shouldn't have to heal under-geared tanks but in general no one else wants to even support new tanks on my BG.
Say something as soon as you zone in then, saying I'm new but bare with me.
I was zoned into a random Oculus on my healer the other day and the tank had a 2500 GS. I made a comment like "Well this will be fun." Run went smoothly, no wipes, finished the instance in about 14 minutes.
