This is a problem with one of our banner advertisements. These ads have been infecting sites all over the world, I've seen them on hotmail.com too. Our ad team reported that this ad had been blocked earlier in the week, but it looks like it's coming in again through another network. We'll get it pulled as soon as we possibly can.

Maybe about time you got another "ad network" or perhaps give advance notice of when these are going to be "slipping through".

The last time I personally counted, Wowhead needed to employ the services of more than 8 different ad networks just to make sure all of the traffic gets covered. Each one of those ad networks will often sell their inventory to OTHER ad networks. I have literally been tearing my hair out for over a week trying to find this ad. The trouble is that the redirect code is intentionally hidden in a banner ad that doesn't look suspicious when tested by the ad networks' QA teams. The ad networks don't know which one of them is serving it EITHER, and without proof none of them will admit to an error. If someone doesn't find this soon I'll have to shut off all the ads on the site just to show them I'm not screwing around.

If this is at all implying that we are okay with this sort of bull%^&*, or even that we had any knowledge or preference to this sort of malicious activity, I don't even know what to tell you. We're doing what we can to get rid of it; I would hope our users trust that this is not the sort of business we condone. We don't even let people talk about WoW private servers and you really think we're cool with a malicious spyware advertisement infiltrating people's PCs? Judging by some of your other posts, you're obviously not entirely happy with this site and you are more than welcome to send us constructive e-mail feedback, but please stop wasting time making sarcastic and snarky comments on my forums. We're not afraid to know what you guys think, that's the entire point of this forum, but I ask that it at least be constructive.
This is the internet, this kind of stuff happens and while I am not at ALL trying to excuse it or brush it off, it's NOT as easy as it sounds to stop, but we are trying our damnedest. I also wanted to point out that this is NOT an isolated threat, advertisements of this nature are appearing on more than just our site. We take this sort of thing very seriously and we are constantly on the backs of the ad networks to remove even the most mildly offending ads, so you better believe something like this isn't going to slide.

For Firefox users, I strongly advise the No Script extension. It works brilliantly with wowhead, I do not see any ads, also I never seen this malicious xpantivirus on my screen.

Dude, are you sure about that?
As far as I know, the adserver yields the ad, but only my browser does not allow the code to be processed. Thus, the wowhead will get they fee and I won't screw my desktop up with xpantivirus lol.

If you are using the popular browser addon that blocks ads from showing, it in fact stops your computer from fetching the ads all together. Thus the impression is never made, payment is not gotten and click-thru is impossible.
While I understand wowhead is working to solve the problem after it has occurred, blocking ads simply keeps it from ever happening.

Just got this on my PC at work and have had it several times on my PC at home in the last few days. The one just then seemed to come up when I tried mousing over an item, but I am not really sure, it may have been just as the advert loaded - i'll try and keep track of the adverts causing it.
Hope you can get it sorted soon.

Disabling all ads on the site isn't very nice, as wowhead is run using ad revenue as income.
Blocking ads on a website is kind of like going over to a friend's house and start munching on the food in their fridge, grabbing a pile of DVDs and bringing them home to your place etc.
stupid analogy. I understand that's how wowhead makes it's money, but I have ever right not to click the ads, and ever right to block them. who clicks on ads anyways?
