In this thread I will try to explain to a newbie RPer how to RP successfully. This thread will mainly pertain to RPing on forums, however, some of it will also pertain to RPing in WoW and other games.
GodmodingFor those of you that aren't familiar with the term, godmoding is when you decide the outcome of an event without giving other people the chance to participate. Wikipedia has an
article describing it, for those who are interested. There are two types of godmoding, Passive and Active.
- Passive Godmoding - This is when you give yourself a "Get Out of Jail Free card" when things don't go the way the way you had in mind, rather than working with previously unfolded events. It is also used to describe the act of creating or playing with an "invincible" character who just shrugs off anything negative that might happen to him, or powers through it due to some spectacular coincidence. ("Oh look! The incredibly rare herb which is the only thing that can cure my disease, and normally only grows on the foothills of Blackrock Mountain, just happens to be growing right here at my feet! What are the odds of that? I'm cured!")
- Active Godmoding - This is when a player definitively describes the outcome of their own actions against another character or interactive object. For example: Player A states, "A strikes B and B takes damage" rather than turning the narrative over to Player B to resolve. Example:
"Player A: Character A throws a punch at Character B."
"Player B: Character B dodges the attack, grabs Character A and throws him out of a stained glass window. Character A flies at Character B, who warps behind him and slashes Character A in the back."
Know and Limit your CharacterIs your character a Human, Orc, Tauren, or Elf? If so, then you can not regenerate from grievous wound like a Troll can! This is where the second part of that rule comes in, if your character
is a Troll, then you must limit your abilities! You are unable to regenerate an arm back in ten minutes. Is your character a Mage? If so, I highly doubt they will be proficient with a dagger, don't try to fight with one! Use your magic! Is your character a Rogue? If so, you can not vanish from a fight every time you want to! If you are wearing plate armour, can you run all day long? No! You. Must. Limit. Yourself. No one wants to play with somebody who can do EVERYTHING.
Just Because You Use Magic, Doesn't Mean You Can Use It To Do ANYTHINGMagic always has a price, which is usually in the form of mana. Without enough mana you can not cast your spells. Using magic too much will quickly tire you out. Likewise, you have to know your character this way too: If you are a Holy Priest of the Light, will you be casting Shadow spells? Most likely not. Remember who you are!
Don't Double-Post or Post in Dead ThreadsThis should be pretty self-explanatory. If you do have something to add to your previous post, just edit it in.
Don't Pre-WriteDon't go into the thread with a story in mind already. Let it unfold on its own! RPing is something that is communal, you all have to work together. The best stories are the ones that go somewhere completely unexpected.
In or Out of CharacterAll posts should be written in character (IC), or as a narrator. If you need to post something that isn't in character, then you should post ((OOC - blah, blah, etc.)). Always mark out of character writing with the "OOC" (Out Of Character).
One last repeat:
- Do not godmode.
- Know the who's, what's, where's, why's, and how's of your character.
- Limit yourself.
- Remember common courtesy.
- Work as a team, and let the story unfold itself.
- And have fun!
