This cypher seems simple but can confound the distracted mind.
As with other cyphers, the goal is to turn off all lights in the grid.
Activating any cell in the grid will toggle it from off to on, or on to off. The cells immediately above, below, and to the left and right of the activated cell will also toggle in the same way.

To complete this quest you have to solve the puzzle

The goal is to turn off all lights in the grid
Activating any cell in the grid will toggle it and all the cells near this sell (up, down, left, right)
The layout is always random
Only 5 clicks required to solve the puzzle
So if you pressed more then 5 times, easier to reset the puzzle and start again

There's actually a 'helper addon', that works on all 3 kinds of puzzles (Cantaric, Mezzonic and Fugueal): Zereth Mortis Puzzle Helper available on curse.

Cantaric one is the easiest, IMO, since you have to finish it with 7 clicks on either left or bottom runes. My strat is to count on both sides which of the 'empty/filled' runes I'll have to click and go for it.
Mezzonic can be one of the slowest to complete, but definitely the Fugueal one seems to be currently the 'hardest'. The addon at least might serve as a learning tool, then you might see fit to use it or not, in the future.

Edit: There are at least 2 more kind of puzzles, reminiscent of those of nazjatar, the line untying and the Bejeweled, that I found easy to complete manually anyway.

Do not stress, do not sit through any long videos where results vary, use this link. Make your puzzle a 5x5, and hit edit. On the website, LIGHT the ones that are not lit on your screen (backwards). Then hit solve.

The puzzle has 1's in all the places it wants you to click, I started from the top row and worked my way to the right on each row. Full credit goes to my guild member Tweety who watched me sit through this for an hour while I kept getting stuck.

This is basically Lights Out (a handheld electronic game that was, apparently, released by Tiger Electronics in 1995) the WoW mini-game. Hehe

How about you create some quests and puzzles that dont require out of game apps to solve? this is a fail of blizz imo. quests that frustrate you to the point of logging and hitting up apps to do the quests for you is absolute fail game design.

This is really very simple to do with purely mechanical, predictable steps, in less than 30 seconds. No addons required.

This is a two-phase fight: phase 1 is the "downward sweep", and phase 2 is "build a new top row".

It goes p1 → p2 → p1 → win.

For phase 1 ("downward sweep") the strategy is simple. We want to clear every row from top to (almost) bottom. Working from the second row to the bottom row, click on any tile if and only if the tile directly above it is lit up.

For example, by clicking on the ＋ locations, we clean up the first two rows:

At this point you will likely have "residue" left over in the bottom row.

So now we enter phase 2 ("build a new top row"). Click on ONLY elements of the top row to give you something in the top row that exactly matches the bottom row. This will scramble the 2nd row, but ignore that. Repeat: Do not click anything below the top row yet. You must click only on top-row cells until the top row matches the bottom row.

For the example in progress, clicking in the top-left and top-right corners gives us a top row that exactly matches the bottom row.

Kirin Tor style puzzles shouldn't be part of the main story line. Especially since the protolock puzzles seem to require reading Wowhead or getting another add-on. How does this have broad player appeal?

I keep hearing a Death Knight voice saying:

We press on - our Masters' work be done.
Suffer Well!

CLUE: Firim says your "companion" can solve future puzzles. This actually means Pocopoc can let you skip the puzzle and loot the cache.

When you finish one of the first puzzles, Firim gives a hint:

Remember, that if you do struggle with these protolocks, your companion can help you overcome them if they have enough energy.

Now take your expanded knowledge out into the field.

When you open any type of protolock puzzle, you get a dialogue box with 2 choices:

Encourage Pocopoc to expend 9 energy to overload the Cache and gain the treasures - You skip the puzzle and loot the chest
Encourage Pocopoc to grant you access to the Cache. Your successful completion will cost 2 energy - You get the puzzle

Notes: Pocopoc doesn't need to be up for this to work. But Pocopoc needs to have at least 9 energy.

To check energy, call up Pocopoc, your rolling mechanical companion, using the icon with the white starburst: Summon Pocopoc*

The yellow progress bar above Pocopoc's head says Pocopoc Energy. It's full when you reach 10/10. You can use this energy to skip puzzles and take the loot. Pocopoc Energy can also be spent on buffs. The energy regenerates as you quest.

*To dismiss Pocopoc, click on it. A chat box opens. Select "Dismiss". If you deleted the summoning icon, Summon Pocopoc, talk to Firim. If that doesn't work, you should probably open a ticket or use the Recover Lost Items function. Pocopoc is not the battlepet Pocopoc. The battlepet is sold by vendor Olea Manu in Exile's Hollow at 37.0, 44.6.

people even have trouble doing this with the add-on or web-calculator

the reason is that the true Goal is to make all of them Empty, NOT occupied

so u may need to use those tools in a inverse way if u were wrong

I find the easiest method for solving these is using the "Light chasing" strategy for the Lights Out game (Wikipedia). No addons needed, no external solvers required.

Basically, you go through each row, starting from the second, and click on those cells where the cell above them is ON.

After the last row either you've solved it or some cells remain ON the bottom row. Based on which cells are ON, marked with white on the left side below, you need to click on the top row cells marked with white on the right side.

Now you go through each row again, starting from the second, and click on the cells which have a lit cell above them. When you're done with the bottom row, you're done.

Gets the puzzle done nice and easy without too much effort, especially if you can think of some rules with which to remember which pattern on top goes with which bottom pattern.

What I find most amusing about this is the instructions "the goal is to turn off all lights in the grid". Maybe I'm stupid but I had a hard time figuring out which one is lit. Evidentially "light" in this case just means a square that is not blank.

Better yet, head to Curse and get Zereth Mortis Puzzle Helper. It's easier to use and you don't have to resort to your browser for help.

Ignore the first post with the light puzzle solver, it doesn't work correctly.

The Mezzonic Cache is based on a game called Lights Out. You can find these caches in Zereth Mortis as part of a world quest or on their own (or talking to Firim if you're bored).

In order to access these caches you will need to unlock Cachial Understanding from the Cypher Console. Doing so will activate the Fugueal Cache, Glissandian Cache, Cantaric Cache, Mezzonic Cache, and Toccatian Cache Caches. In order to start one of these puzzles you will need to ask Pocopoc to activate it using 2 Pocopoc Energy (or use 9 Pocopoc Energy to immediately solve).

In lights out (or, in our case, Mezzonic Cache), any square you click on will turn that square and the squares directly above, below, and to the sides to the opposite (on to off, and vice verse).

One very easy way to solve any layout is a technique is called "Chase the Lights".

Starting with the top row, click the square directly below any square that is "on".

Example if the first two rows looked like this:
o= lit, x = dark

0 0 0 0 0

0 = lit, x = dark, # = click - = don't click alone
you would click
0 0 x x 0
# # - - #

Do the same with the next row, and so on to the bottom.

If you are lucky, you will be able to solve the board in one pass.

If you need a second pass you will need to click the following squares on the top row based on the bottom row (go left to right).

Skip unlit squares!

First square lit: Square 4 then 5
Second square lit: Square 2 then square 5
Third square lit: Square 4
Fourth square lit: Ignore
Fifth square lit: Ignore

You know you did it right when the first and last row match.

Repeat technique of clicking on the square below the one that is lit.

This Quest is mini game to start it speak with Firim and pick last option.

Solve mini game by removing all white squares to be honest i done it on the first try. Herd to say if all players have same start with white squares.

When you encounter Mezzonic Caches out in Zeredith Mortis, you'll get random puzzles. You may find you can't solve some puzzles working from the top down ("downward sweep"). Try using an "upward sweep", working from the bottom up, using yatima's approach. I found the following worked:

Start in the second to bottom row, clicking only on a square that is above a patterned square.
If you end up with leftover squares in the top row, rebuild the bottom row. At this point the bottom row is empty. Click on tiles in the bottom row that will put patterned tiles in the same arrangement as the leftover tiles in the top row. Now do an "upward sweep". Place your cursor in the second to last row and only click on a tile that is above a patterned tile. Continue clearing tiles upward.

yatima's condensed “downward sweep” for Dummies (not)

This method clears the puzzle from the top down.

Start in the second row from the top, clicking only on a square that is below a patterned square.
If you end up with leftover squares in the bottom row, rebuild the top row. At this point the top row is empty. Click on tiles in the top row that will put patterned tiles in the same arrangement as the leftover tiles in the bottom row.
Now do another "downward sweep". Place your cursor in the second row from the top and only click on a tile that is below a patterned tile. Continue clearing tiles downward.

Its quests like this that make me hate this game. I have NEVER heard of the lights out game that everyone states is the basis for this quest. I have watched all the vidoes, tried the tricks others have provided, and STILL i am left with 1 'occupied' square that never goes away. Restart game, and still, it doesnt solve in four clicks as the youtubers demonstrate. This kind of thing is really absurd. It has no point in the storyline and causes undue frustrations for folks who come to enjoy the game.

Might just be me and I've been lucky since the June 1st patch - but it seems they've simplified these puzzles hugely. For all three that I've done since the patch I've only had to go through the 'click the tile in the row below the lit one' process for one pass. it's solved itself after that.

This is annoying. I've used addons and interactive solvers. I end up all filled blocks every single time and the solution becomes impossible.
