The 4 skulls have their corresponding color. The chains disappear with the exact color in each of the skulls. If you click on the skulls you always change the colors in the same order and each skull changes a different number of colors. One changes 4 another 3 another 2 and the last one only changes its color. It seems complicated but it is actually very simple. Just start by detecting the number of colors that each skull changes. When you know which skull changes 4, which 3, which 2 and which 1, you start by pressing the skull that changes 4 until its chain disappears, that is until you place the appropriate color. Now you press the skull that changes 3 colors until its chain disappears, for the simple reason that the color that you have placed correctly before will be the only one that does not change. You continue with the skull of 2 and finally with that of 1. Done

This is puzzle chest inside the Torghast. Can appear randomly on every level.

Puzzle consists of 4 locks (chain over the box)
Each lock has a Rune Key in front of it with rune above the key.
Each rune can have 4 colors, but only 1 color opens the lock.
Clicking on rune triggers switch of color of 1, 2, 3 or 4 other runes.
So basically there is:

One rune that switches only itself
Another rune switches itself and 1 other rune
Third rune can switch itself and 2 other runes
And the last rune switches all rune colors.

Solution is:
Find a lock that switches 4 runes and click on it till you get the corresponding chain unlock.
Repeat this with lock that can switch 3 runes,
Then click on lock that switches itself and 1 other rune
And the final lock should be the one that can switch only itself.

What you're trying to do is make all 4 chains disappear from the chest.

This box has 4 chains that each have a lock. When you click one of the runes, it changes color and if it's the correct color for that rune, the chain connected to that rune unlocks. The trick is getting all 4 of them to be the correct color/unlock at the same time. See Varenne's comment for the solution.

I have never in this whole game seen such a brick wall as these puzzles. Clearly people have figured it out but I still don't get it and it takes up so much time in Torghast, a place that is mostly just strategic killing. I hate this, Blizzard. A lot. It is a brick wall of fun-killing. It kills my enthusiasm because there's no way of knowing in game how it works, and even coming here doesn't really help.

for those that just want answers and no strategies, this is what worked for me

skull 1 - turquoise
skull 2 - turquoise
skull 3 - turquoise
skull 4 - purple

The way it works for me is: spam clicking on the corresponding skull with the chain(s) that are left on the box... it has been the easiest for me that way...usually get it open within a minute... keeping an eye out for a/the pattern as I do it :-)

I'm sorry but sirenspew is the only one who offered any pertinent information. The advice given by others seems to be completely random. Just accept the fact that you'll spend about five minutes clicking random buttons until all of the chains disappear. It's folly to try and find a pattern. It really seems to be completely random...

To open this chest:

First, (from left to right) test-click each switch, and find out how many runes each switch is changing when you click the switch. Type these 4 numbers in chat. For instance, it could be "1 2 3 4", "4 3 2 1", or any other combinations.

Second, click the 4-rune switch until the corresponding chain disappears. For instance, if 4-rune switch is the left-most one, then click it until the left-most chain disappears. Or, if the 4-rune switch is the n-th switch, then click it until the n-th chain disppears.

Third, click the 3-rune switch until the corresponding chain disappears.

Fourth, click the 2-rune switch until the corresponding chain disappears.

Fifth, click the 1-rune switch until the corresponding chain disappears.

Hooray!

how do you do it before the stun/hits? I got hit 3 times just looking at it. Tried to back up and regroup - died.

A small tip that worked perfectly for me.

To know which rune switches 1 or 2 or 3 simply focus on the chains and the little sparkle is created when you click a rune. It will help to remember. what to click next. This helped me a lot.

so what I did:
Get all the four chains to appear on the chest
Click on rune that controls the three chains repeatedly until all disappears
finally click on the final remaining one repeatedly until its chain disappears too. and there you have it :)
