Given that this item costs 40,000 gold and given that the regular rune, on average, costs ~125 gold...

You would need to use this item roughly 320 times on a single character before it was worth purchasing over the individual runes.

Permanent runes have a use-break-even point (UBEP), a deviation of the economical break-even point: the amount of times you have to use the permanent rune for it to be as expensive as buying Defiled Augment Rune for every single time you've used the permanent rune. The UBEP is 'Lightforged Augment Rune price / Defiled Augment Rune price', where the Lightforged Augment Rune price can be defined as '40000g - sold Defiled Augment Rune'.

If Lightforged Augment Rune is used less than the UBEP it's a theoretical deficit.
If Lightforged Augment Rune is used more than the UBEP it's a theoretical profit.
If the UBEP becomes negative due to selling 40000g worth of Defiled Augment Rune, there is a net profit.

Interestingly the UBEP varies per server (Defiled Augment Rune price) and player (sold Defiled Augment Rune), but increases over time due to skewed supply-demand for the Defiled Augment Rune: more players get the permanent rune so no longer need the Defiled Augment Rune, the supply remains stationary whereas the demand decreases, so the prices drop. As prices drop, the UBEP increases. On release, the UBEP is about 200-300 on most servers which is a realistic number but as Defiled Augment Rune cost drops, it will become unrealistically high.

Mind that there are unquantifiable benefits from the permanent rune compared to Defiled Augment Rune that the UBEP doesn't take into account, and because of these I would consider buying this regardless of the theoretical deficit:

No varying supply.
Constant availability.
Single bagspace use.
Usage where you'd normally wouldn't use a rune.

Especially the last point is important: we can theorize endlessly about the cost formula, yet you can use it anywhere, everywhere, everytime.

I wish this were a) cheaper and b) available at revered. The only thing you get at revered is Boon of the Lightbearer, which to me is pretty situational.

Lightforged Augment Rune is one of 10 unlimited-use global-use buff items available in game.
Lightforged Augment Rune is sold by Vindicator Jaelaana on The Vindicaar. Requires Exalted with Army of the Light to buy the item.

Note #1: Lightforged Augment Rune (released with the Legion expansion) is an upgraded version of Empowered Augment Rune (A)/Empowered Augment Rune (H) (released with the WoD expansion).
Note #2: Lightforged Augment Rune is a permanent version of Defiled Augment Rune.

Ever-Blooming Frond - rewarded from the quest Cenarion Concerns obtained from a Lunarfall Inn / Frostwall Tavern Level 1 in your Garrison.
Soulgrinder - rewarded from the Garrison campaign quest Soulgrinder Survivor (A) / Soulgrinder Survivor (H).
Unleashed Mania - has a chance to be contained in Treasure of the Highmaul which is the reward for the last player alive in The Coliseum which is accessed from the Gladiator's Sanctum Level 3.
These cannot be obtained anymore:

Was wondering why this is weaker than the Repurposed Fel Focuser when the cost is higher and this is harder to get. The (obvious I guess) answer is you can use them both at the same time.

In case you harbored thoughts of regaining your investment by selling this back to the vendor at the end of the expansion, this item sells to the vendor for a grand total of 100g.

Used it and was disappointed not to get hit by a sudden burst of light boosting me up.

Instead it uses the same spell effect as for the Defiled Augment Rune, which feels a bit naff to be honest. And fel coloured.

Still a good purchase, but shame Blizzard didn't put a little extra flavour into the use effect.

It stacks with Repurposed Fel Focuser (so you can have both up at the same time) and is not consumed on use. It only has a 60 second cooldown as well.

The underrated effect of this item is that frees a lot of bag space for you, because you dont have to carry all those Defield Augment Runes anymore.

the cost of this is beyond my comprehension. Blizzard, you realize the only way these ppl can afford your argus items is to screw over anyone leveling thru the auction house. Now that you have removed loot, how are we suppose to level things like enchanting? becuase of the army of the light mount cost and the cost of this, leveling professions is now a nightmare. A level 150 (profession items) are going for 200k in the ah....really? I blame it on this stuff

This item costs 40,000 gold! It is exactly the same as the Defiled Augment Rune, except is not consumed on use.

On Silvermoon, the Defiled Augment Rune sells for around 10 gold. I could buy 4,000 Defiled Augment runes for the price of one Lightforged Augment rune ! Maybe in the past the Defiled runes were more expensive? Currently it makes absolutely no sense to by one, it confers no benefits at all.

Came here to report the stealth nerf of this item as within the last hour it can no longer be used above lvl 119....
I really don't understand the logic behind Blizzard's thinking of this seeing how much gold it cost me to acquire and ofc the rep farming to get to exalted with Army of the Light. No doubt there will be a lvl 120 version available at some point but why stop us from using a +15 stat boost item when you can already get lvl 120 consumable runes with higher +stats on? Surely that should be my decision if I want to sacrifice the stats and save the better ones for raiding....

It's like telling a child they're too old to play with dolls.... Says who?

Just double checked and at this time Defiled Augment Rune does not share the maximum lvl requirement....

Honorbound rep for completed wanted quests bugged for Horde, AH has been bugged for weeks and other atrocious problems with this expansion and they "fix" this. Something no one asked for and never needed to be changed (the bonus was barely anything and you couldn't even make it vendor for a decent price),

Repurposed Fel Focuser (bought from Warmage Kath'leen in Broken Shore for 7,5k) still works, not sure if this is intended or not, but I'm using it instead of flasks atm, since there's no m+/raids yet.

Thx again a Blizz for screwing the player base by making this item unless for 120s. For what little boost it gives at higher levels and the high cost (40k gold at exalted) you could have left it alone. Most of us players thought you would as it worked into new xpac but just yesterday in middle of gaming it stopped working. If your going to nerf the item why don’t you ever nerf the cost to be fair to players leveling by making it cost very little? Because that would be fair and your not about fair are you.

If it's worth knowing to anybody, because the Lightforged Augment Rune will no longer work over 120 there is currently no equivalent item to replace it. For now it's just the Battle-Scarred Augment Rune that comes from doing missions, and eventually may be a drop from raid bosses. At this moment average a price of 250g but will definitely drop if we see them flow in from Uldir raiding.

As samalea points out the Broken Isles item, Repurposed Fel Focuser has a higher stat bonus than the Argus item, though unfortunately with a 15 minute cooldown. An item from Warlords of Draenor with a similar effect, Oralius' Whispering Crystal also works as of 8/25/2018.

At the moment of getting it at the date it was important, I thought "wow 40k for this is like TOO much, because when BFA hits, it will became obsolete and even won't work at 120, but hey, I can use it for the raids and challenges..."
Then BFA hit, and I was impressed I was wrong that it kept working. I used it for questing in the leveling process and even for world quests and dungeons at 120. I thought "Oh well, at least those 40k still work"
Then today (25/08/2018) suddenly, without any explanation or note, BAM "it requires level 119 or lower to work"
That hurts. But the thing that hurts the most for me, because I was suspecting it all the time, is that for getting it, I had to waste 40k... now if I sell it, it costs mere 100 gold... For this to be a bit fair, I think it needs 2 more 0s... it should sell at 10k minimum... that, or become a toy without rep walls...

Was this always not useable at 120? Or was this a stealth nerf? Such a waste of 50k gold, I never would have bought the thing a couple months before BFA if that was the case, I had figured it would last me until the next reusable one came out.

If there is a BfA version of this in 8.2 or whenever, I am not buying it, because it'll be 100,000 gold and only work till level 129 in patch 9.0.

Small consolation, but like other level restricted items it is useable in time walker dungeons/raids. I am one of the people that makes full use of such set ups.
