I want to be a protection paladin at level 80. Tankin' shtuff is mah thang. However, I'm afraid if I level as prot, it will move at too slow a pace because I won't be able to AOE grind since there will be so many playing. If I level as ret, by the time I get to 80, I'll have a nice ret set, but I'll be building from the ground up to compete with other tanks who I group with for gear, which in the end just doesn't work.
Thoughts? (my question is really do you think it will be difficult to build a prot set from the ground up as a level 80 ret paladin?)

It depends on how you want to level. If you want to level up through instances, there will be a great need for tanks. You'll have all the DPS you could want, just need to find a healer, the difficulty of which depends on your server.
I agree there will probably be too many people to AoE grind, but did you mean level up exclusively that way? Maybe it is just because I'm a quest-fiend, but I level up through quests faster than I could grind. On my Prot Paladin, I think my playtime was 5 days when I hit 70. I was Protection all the way (at the time I didn't want to think about Ret). Not to mention I could not stand to level up that way solely (grinding I mean), I'd put pencils through my eyes lol.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I'll level through instances, it should be fun, but I'll be at a lack for money...
If I do the low level Northrend quests at 80, will I make more money from them than I would doing them at the appropriate level?

Fear not. I leveled Prot and I loved it. Being able to solo elites meant for Group quests for 3 people saves a lot of time. As Prot you will get in instances easily, and there is a lot of XP there (4-6k per kill rested). Your DPS will also be nice enough - of course, you won't be 2-shotting mobs like Ret pallies will, but as soon as you pull more than 3 mobs (I used to pull 10 and more every time I could) you will really shine.
Trust me, being Prot in LK will be lovely. I myself switched to Ret now, so I can farm rep and whatnot, but as soon as the 12th comes, I am going back to Prot, redoing my UI and getting ready to tank the world.

You have inspired me. Screw ret, prot will be fun.
Just hopefully most rep can be farmed through instances...
