You don't purchase the cages; it is an option when you click on the pet. Only drop/vendor/item pets can be caged, wild caught pets cannot.

Go to your Pet/Mount/Toy/Heirloom collection button and then click on Pets. Then right click on the Pet you want to cage, and hit 'cage'. Voila. In you bag as a caged pet, as admamsm said.

How do I cage a pet that's not in my pet list, e.g. the sinister squashling dropped by the headless horseman, of which I've had three for years?

You'll have to cage one of your current squashlings first.

Thanks. Maybe I can cage one and put it in my bag, put the new one in it's place, cage it then trade them back, so the lvl 1 is in my bags ready for the AH and the one I've been advancing for years is back in it's spot in my pet list. Or are all caged pets lvl 1?

Jeez Blizz - telling me to just eyeball stuff in inventory to find one item, who's name and icon I don't know is NOT going to work. But it will waste hours of days before I admit failure. PLEASE can we have a search function.

Yep, you shouldn't buy it, you can just click on pet and there will be "put in cage". By the way, if you like collecting pets and other things - probably you will be interested in site rarityraider.com It’s very convenient to look for most rare pets/mounts etc. As a person who loves collecting mounts and other things, I really admire it ^^
