Frozen Core - 3 points - Reduces the damage taken from all spells by 2/4/6%
My thoughts: You need this if you're this far down the frost tree.
I disagree. Frozen Core sucks. Those 3 points are better placed somewhere else.
i may change this.. there seems to be a lot of people disagreeing with me, but i figured damage reduction is damage reduction
Tier 3 (requires 10 points)
Magic Attunement - 2 points - Increases the range of your Arcane spells by 3/6 yards and the effect of your amplify magic and dampen magic spells by 25/50%.
My thoughts: if you're deep arcane, take this. For two points and 6 yards, it's huge. Also, for not getting the ice barrier, putting dampen magic on yourself is another way to put a damper on other caster's lives. If you're any other spec, you don't need this.
+6 Yards on CS and Polymorph are, like, dah seckspoint well taken. hadn't thought of that TBH.
Tier 7 (requires 30 points)
Arcane Empowerment - 3 points - Increases the damage of your arcane missiles spell by an amount equal to 15/30/45% of your spell power and the damage of your arcane blast by 3/6/9% of your spell power.
My thoughts: Can be situationally good in BGs where there's a chance you can sneak up to someone already fighting and sling a couple spells for the easy HK, but not very worthwhile in arenas, because you don't have that luxury.
45% Coefficient extra for arcane missiles? If you are arcane, you
are
grabbing missile barrage anyways, so making it
even
stronger won't hurt (you)
very true, but this is still very dependant on spells with cast times. i've also noticed that any decent amount of resilience will make arcane missiles' punch nowhere near as hard as it should be. (in a BG, I was attacking someone, regs were hitting for about 8-900, crits for about 14-15 whereas in regular pve they'll hit for 11-13 and 19-22ish i think.).. point still taken though.
ty m8 for all the work. as a PVE mage trying to start PVP i did lern alot.
i'm missing Gems and stats.
so whats more importent? haste, sp or res? haste how far? i heard 400-500? what do u say?
and if hastee>sp>res as i heard then y use PVP gear? my pve gear has toons of haste and SP.
i found frost batter for arena (i try'd mainly 2V2 where u wioll be attacked, alot) and arcane for BG's (glass canon), what do u ppl say?
Frost definitely seems to be the spec of choice for arenas. Mages are seen as the squishy easy targets, and frost mages can be deceptively survivable.
In pvp, haste and SP are going to be what you want for to gem and enchant for. I would say that SP edges out haste by a slight amount, just because it doesn't matter how fast you throw your spells, with no power behind them you're just tickling your opponents.
The reason you want to use pvp gear over pve gear is because pve gear has NO resiliance. Resil can seriously make the difference in a fight because it reduces the amount of damage a crit and a DoT does to you. it lowers the coefficient somehow (i'm not very familiar with the mechanics, but I do know it works). Yes, your pve gear will have tons more haste and SP on it, but just like in PvE... a dead mage does no damage.

Ach, can you bold the headings to the various sections? They'll be much easier to read.
do you mean like.. bolding the different specs within each class? (i.e. Resto druid, Feral Druid, Protadin, Retadin, etc)
Talent names, talent specs, classes, specs, etc.
Any type of title/header.
All of the opposing classes are bolded and bulleted. As are the different talent trees mages have. I haven't done the specific specs for other classes yet, but I intend to.

5k damage non-crit in 2.5 seconds or less isn't enough damage for you? =( Can't please everyone I guess.

no, it's actually quite good.. provided you can afford to sit still for the ~2.5 seconds it'll take to fire off the spell.. THAT was my point.
At least rogues are getting pwned by someone :P
so who's gonna start pwning the ret pallies? rogues have become a lot more balanced nowadays in pvp than they were in TBC. (or maybe i've just learned to deal with them better. lol)

The other dude is a lock and we are talking about either Enchant/JC or JC/Engineer. Whats the opinion of the only other people I ever really see talking out loud about PvP? And Ach, are you going to put a profession part in? I hope you do =D.
If you want a PVP profesion, it's engineer. Well, at least until they nerf the "Tinkering" enchants. The Rocket-boot like enchant is incredible for a warlock to get away since they don't really have much kiting abilities in my opinion. As for the other profesion, well i'd get Tailoring for the Lightweave embroidery but that's just me.

Im not 80 yet but the plan is when I get there I do 3v3 with my buddies.
We talk about professions all the time, and the rogue is going with JC and BS for the extra slot on the buckle and the great gems.

Don't know if I posted some other time about this so......thanks for this topic, something I thought I was gonna have to beg out of people when I got to 80!
I do indeed plan on putting a profession part in, but from what I understand, the general consensus is that you want engineering as one of your professions. i'll have to do some more research as to the other professions and the benefits they give... this thread still needs a LOT of work :)

updated.. added links, which in turn made the sections I already have much longer, so i had to re-edit after adding the links to take into account which classes go where.. Also, finally added the warlock strat that was posted several days ago (thanks again Open). I'm not ignoring this thread, it's just been a long week. Since server maintenance is going on right now, I figured i'd get on it this morning. I do still plan on adding a section for professions, and gearing/gemming/enchanting, but I need some good resources (since i don't know every single enchant/gem/pvp gear piece... and there's A METRIC @#%@TON of them).

Achloryn thank you for making this guide and all the ppl that contributed to the guide.
I'm guy that have to work almost every day and I don't have much time to spend in wow and pvp so this is going to help me a lot
Are you all using default UI? Or do any of you have FOCUS target working with an add-on?
Goldish you can set key bind for focus target from key bind interface (this is working for xperl and pitbull)

I would like to post something from today's patch notes and add a huge
IT'S ABOUT EFFING TIME!
Patch 3.1.2 Mages -
Mirror Images: The images summoned by this spell will now target the creature that most hates the Mage, and should no longer cast Fire Blast or Frostbolt on targets that are affected by crowd control debuffs that break immediatly on damage unless they are already casting these spells when the crowd control is applied.
No more stupid mirror images breaking polys, saps, or anything like that during an arena folks! /cheer
Edit: I just noticed this for Open about his warlock strat..
Warlocks - Nether protection has been reduced to 30% damage reduction down from 60%

Anyone else here having problems with their Rogue being blown up by Ret Paladins within 2 seconds?
When 50% of our losses are from the same class, something's probably up.
Sap the paladin in the open, spellsteal him clean, and solo him. Make him waste cooldowns on you, so when he eventually makes the switch to your rogue, he's got quite a bit less to control him with.
While you're cleaning off the paladin in his sap, your rogue should be heading to sap his healer/dps, to help add pressure while you're soloing the paladin.

maybe i'm misunderstanding what you mean, but you can only have one person sapped per rogue.
