There is a valley of whelps you can farm for this quest drop. The drop rate is pretty low so it can take a while if you don't get lucky early on. Valley entrance is around 68,52 and the mobs are non elite 41-43. Only reason it's marked as elite is because there are elite dragons nearby but you don't need to encounter them for this quest.

This item should not be mistaken for Firey enchantment.

I've also heard that this one is bad for instances, since it procs a AoE attack, that will hit sheeped/trapped targets, and will break them.

It took me 3 attempts to do this. I literally killed at least 50 of the 41-43 and about 20 of the elites...I did get a dark whelpling drop though. If you are a skinner/leatherworker it is worth your time..tons of thick leather. just be patient or lucky. very easy to solo as a 47 hunter.

You dont have 2 kill elites,
just kill the small whelps and have a bit of luck thats all

Warning folks, I just spent over two hours grinding both of these, going in a cirlce of the little ones, taking out 3 elites and back round and round.

Didn't get a thing. OUCH.

Did get the Dark Whelpling though...

I got the heart on 6th go of killing the scalding whelps and I never killed any elite 1's too and this is my first time I've been in Badlands! I must be bloody lucky or something cause a friend of mine got it after 2000+ kills!

As a side-note related to lore, Feranor Steeltoe is the dwarf guy in the second mission of the human campaign in Reign of Chaos.
He asks Arthas to kill a black dragon, Searinox, and gives him a fire orb, which acts a little like the reward of this quest.

Well it takes about a few up to 10 at least for me i went near the 43 elites and killed the whelps there got mine in 5 kills so go there REALLY helps

Soloed as a 42 afflictionlock without any troubles... just clear an area close to the elites and pull one within the lvl-range of 43-44... Then its just for u to fear and swear^^

To bad i didnt check here before i used it

Hahaha.. best quest evar! Took me, a level 41 paladin, about 2minutes to solo. Accept the quest - go to the dragon place - kill the first dragon i see - return to Sigrun.

I'm sorry for you people who had to kill over 40 dragons for this. Not everyone is as great as me.

haha. i went to the area halldorr said and i just killed 2 of the non elites and the heart dropped. i guess i was lucky. i did the quest at lvl 50 also along with mirages for the rep.

Just a warning although I feel a bit daft now.

Got this enchantment from quest and as a lvl 47 Warrior still using trusty Whirlwind Axe with a small enchant on already and expecting to upgrade this weapon soon I thought I would use the Fiery Blaze on my Trinket weapon which as yet not having a One Hand weapon to go with this Main hand Hammer of Expertise, I use it with a shield but the weapon is summoned by a trinket for 1 hour use with a 3 hour cool down. This enchant worked great and even alongside +6 Weightstone. However when resommoning the weapon after cooldown- no enchant. I suppose it is a different weapon each time you summon it from the trinket. Wish I'd kept it for partner One hand when I eventually obtain one or even put it on Whirlwind Axe. Plonker eh?

Easy to solo as a lvl45 hunter with a pet I only had to kill about 5 whelps before I got my heart

After a couple hours of killing a mixture of non-elite and elites at the above coordinates, I finally gave up and just killed the Whelps on my way out.

The very last one had the item. So maybe the best way to complete this quest is to give up. :)

After i killed all the "baby's", i started killing the elites in the lethlor ravine. From those i got my drop.
The lvl 45 el. where no problem for my hunt...

I farmed this valley for 45 minutes the other day, killed 80 whelps and not one heart. Came back again for another 30 minutes and still nothing. I think I will give this one a miss.

I never did this when i was leveling up. I was helping a guildie the other night get it. Being a lvl 70 pally i could walk backwards in a big circle aggroing all of them while spamming concencration. Needless to say it took 63 kills, which takes a while since only about 10 dragons (elites will follow you, whelps shoot and take too much effort to AoE in mass numbers) spawn at a time..... one of those drops that everyone can loot from just one mob tho, so get a group!

It took me 8-10 of the dragons before i got the hearth. easy as hell because as a paladin you have the fire resistance aura. They sometimes hardly nudged my healthbar as a level 44.

This quest is entirely doable with a 40-45 hunter. I killed all the whelps, and when they didn't drop the item i went for the elites. Some programmer at blizzard must have been on crack the day he made these guys "elites" my pet (44 king bangalash) solod one, while i kited another, imo this qeust is way overrated according to difficulty.

Or if you usually have bad luck, and get the heart on the second kill.... I guess it's all just random luck. I didn't even get to see the elites before I got it. :D

Edit: did this on my ret Pally, and it took me two clears of them to finally get the stupid thing.

This is only another Jackpot quest that proves Blizzard have a substandard programming on random things.
I did this one with many toons, sometimes got at first few kills and sometimes got nothing after an hour or so.
Perhaps you should simply give up if you are getting frustrated. When you have no luck, you will never have that luck.

As a 42 sub rogue, no, as a person this quest was just downright painful. I applied my poisons 61 minutes ago when I entered the valley and still no drop....drop rate? what drop rate.

The final nail in the coffin for this quest is that level 60-70 players mine the many Mithril Deposits in the same area, making it near-impossible to at least grind in peace. Quest abandoned.

Attempted this quest last night. I remember doing it with my warrior and I slapped this chant on my phantom blade at that time. Well, my guildmistress and I with our feral druids (Me 47 and her 46) were grinding these, just for quest exp. Perhaps 60-80 whelps and about 10-15 elites (With respawns) and nothing. She got some aquamarine and the elites dropped a green seemingly ever other kill, but no heart. She even got a http://wowhead.com/?item=4090 from one of the elites. Easy enough with me tanking (3k HP, 4500 armor) to hold the elite attention while she DPS'd them down. But no heart. And after all that time, I have no heart to finishing this quest. All the leather aside, this enchant isn't too good either, unless you like pulling more mobs than you want. The fire damage is an AoE and will hit other mobs nearby that you didn't mean to attack (learned the hard way in Felwood with the yellow owls).

just completed this quest...
For me the drop rate wasn't to bad killed about 40 elite and normal whelps.
I was being boosted by a level 72 priest who was kind enough to lend me her time.
While in the middle of killing the normal mobs i came onto Wow head to see what people thought of the quest lol and after reading the comments i said to the priest that she should just go coz this gonna take a long time and i would just kill the normal whelps for however long it took lol but she decided that we should have another go at the elites. after killing 3 elites one of them dropped http://www.wowhead.com/?item=1714 and then straight after that the heart dropped! lmao i couldnt believe it.

Another one of those ridiculous quests where apparantly the drakes do not have hearts...
Anyway I killed about 4 whelps and decided to try the elites but I had no better luck there either. I cleared the whole area up and down, and got the heart on the last one.
If your doing this at the actual level just kill the whelps, I think you'll probably have the same chances as the elites.

I went through about 70 elites in 2 days trying to get the drop.
got 540xp per lvl 45 dragon as a lvl 45 druid and around 5s per drop..

not a bad place to go grind

sigh - level 80 mage going for loremaster/3000 quests... whatever... easily spent 30 min or more on this one...clearing whelps and elites several times over — heart never dropped, i gave up and moved on.

i would try this at 3am no body around, i killed only whelps and got it after 3 kills.

Found valley easily and killed some of the smaller dragonkins until I killed probably 20 of them and came on here and saw people had luck with the elites. So I tried my luck with those (lvl 48 mage) and had no troubles. After the third sweep of valley, friend came and helped. We swept valley at least 5 times more until we found an elite who dropped. Took somewhere around an hour to drop.

It's pure luck and it's up to you if you think it's worth your time.

Count me as another one that is so frustrated I could just spit. I grinded on whelps and elites for TWO HOURS and got nothing but forked tongues to show for it.

I might try again later since the elites weren't too bad exp for a 48 warrior...but if I don't get it quickly this will be abandoned faster than you can say "Horrible Drop Rate."

So im lucky :) Yeasterday i was trying to finish this q for about 1h . I had to go to work , today ive tried for 0.5 h and Elite dropped it. Nice place for lvl every elite gave me about 1k xp + few greens , and some s.

After trying twice while alone to complete this quest, and I did not know that the drop could come from the small whelps, so I only challenged the elite's. I did a lot of dying and going back for repair, as a level 47 warrior. I finally recruited a level 44 hunter to give me a hand, he was mostly interested in the huge amounts of leather he could skin, but to make a long story short, we fought the elites for about an hour or so, only stopping the attacks a couple of times to rev our health. I'll bet we killed at least 100 of them before I finally got the heart drop. All in all, with 5550, experience, and the Fiery Blaze Enhancement reward probably made this quest worth waiting for, but damn hard work for an hour or so!

Killed at least 15 elites and at least 75 whelps, then I got frustrated, took a little break, killed a few more, still didn't drop, I was about to give up but then I prayed the next one would drop it, and it did =D. Horrible droprate definitely not worth it unless you honestly don't have anything better to do, or if you need to level skinning. Good luck ppl.

if you farming qs for factions rep, dont bother. This q is a waste of time, the drop rate is totaly retarted. Its usefull only to low lvls who combine it with exp from mobs.

Well i say for the quest to have such a very bad drop rate it should atleast give a better quest reward for it instead of the or give the same item but with a much better, like damage at 50 to 100 and a radius of at least 30yard's? who agrees with me there? My wow name it (Guthrie)

Oh my god i had nightmares about the droprate on that heart there are only 2 times when i grinded 2 levels from mobs only one when i was level 37 and i was doing my armorsmith q (in wich i ^&*!ed blood to gather all the ores etc.) and the second when i farmed for 4 hours the drakes for this enchant to put it on my weapon it was absolutely awfull(the enchant is good btw almost worth the time farming:p)

I grinded for about an hour before I gave up. Never ever doing that quest again. And I can't stress this enough: If you've started doing this quest and don't want to give up cause you spent time here for nothing if you do - suck it up, swallow your pride and move on. You'll feel a lot better when you get out of that hellhole.

Going to have to agree with most of the comments here. This is one of the worst droprates I have run across in the game. Over 100 whelps and over 50 elites....no drop. Do not ever bother doing this quest. Hopefully if no one does it, blizzard will either fix the drop rate, or better yet, remove the person responsible for it from ever designing another quest

Unless the award is amazing for melee classes I suggest you don't even try this quest. I killed whelps and elites for more then half an xp bar and still didn't get the drop. This is the single most boring grind I have done in the game and I didn't even get the drop.

I remember doing this back in classic WOW and it was terribad droprate. Thought I'd give it a go today and it seems they haven't improved it at all. I've killed about 80 whelps and 10 elites and no drop. Gained half a level of unrested xp... woot. Very disappointing.

After getting that off my chest I was able to bring myself to kill 10 more and it dropped lol.

I've been running around now, for approximately 3 hours, killing everything there, on my lvl 44 spacegoat, including the elite dragons (not the named ones) and I still haven't seen this drop.

The only thing that keeps my motivation up, is the change of Dark Whelpling dropping.

I'll give this 3 more hours, and if this piece of ^&*! ain't dropping, then I'm going to roll a Death Knight on the same server and kill the questgiver over and over untill he's dead permanently.

Edit: Just wrote this comment and the Q item drops. Seems like Sigrun Ironhew can live a little longer.

Don't bother slapping this on an Alliance/Horde/Argent lance.
It doesn't show.

I ground for a good 2 hours for this enchant, slapped it onto my lance
hoping mine would have a neat glow when I used is, but it was all in vain.
To make it worse, Blizzard made it that you can't keep the item afterwards
in a quick ninja fix.

Better off slapping this onto your mining pick, skinning knife, arclight spanner, or any other
goofy profession/vanity items.

What a nightmare, ive killed 10+ elite's and up to 50 whelps and still no drop. there is a dude running around here thats been looking for it for about 4 hours no joke. I think it needs to be looked at Blitzz come on sort it!

Just did this with my 51 rogue. Note - if you're not a skinner I'd steer clear of this one. Final tally when the heart finally dropped. 39 thick leathers, 20 heavy leathers, 1 heavy hide, 1 thick hide for a total of 61 whelps to get heart. Also recieved 18 forked tongues, 20 ripped webbings and 6 small flame sacs which I will use for dragonbreath chili.

Dear sweet goodness! As a Lv 80 shaman, I cleared that whole daggum valley 3 times. It wasn't until I was halfway thru clearing it a fourth time that I got the drop. Not worth the time, imo.

Took 3 clean sweeps through the valley to get it to drop. Only doing it because I'm running low on Loremaster quests. I would highly recommend avoiding this horrifically boring quest if you can afford it.

Unfortunately, this doesn't give your weapon any sort of cool glow or other visual enhancement. Sort of a bummer considering how much work goes into grinding for the quest item.

Three things I recommend about this quest
1. Start it at level 42, you'll probably be 45 before you complete it.
2. Have skinning as one of your professions
3. Be sure your bags are empty so you can hold all the hides you'll end up with

Patience is not a virtue for this quest....Took me 1+ hour to get the heart..killed 30+ with no drop (dropped at about 40 kills). Try the north end..thats where i got the drop.
If it not had been that I was a skinner and got all that leather...It would have been a complete waste of time (If I gave up)...Good Luck!~!

ya know what, in the other grind quests i kinda got why i had to grind to get the object such as

"innocentlysassy on 09/14/2009 (Patch 3.2.0)
Blizz put in a lot of quests meant to make you grind and help you level. (God, remember Sida's Bag from the wetlands?) This quest effectively helped me gain about 1/3 of a level. =D"

cause only one ooze could have it, but i would think ALL dragons would have a heart....they r living after all......

As an apprentice to Feranor Steeltoe, I learned his special technique for imbuing weapons with fiery enchantments. Last I heard of him, he was working at a smithy with a hunting party up in Lordaeron.

I can't tell you too many of the details about the process, but I can tell you it requires blood from a rare, still-beating black drake whelp's heart. I don't have much to do waiting for word from Ironforge. If you bring me a heart from the whelps in Lethlor Ravine, I'll show you my skill!
