Gazban will spawn after you destroy the altar and attack you... battle proceeds from there. The quest is hard to solo even at higher levels simply due to the advantage murlocs have in the water, as well as their relatively quick respawn rate.

This quest confuised me abit.
Order:
Get Catelyn's Blade from "Pretty boy" Duncan.
Go to Booty Bay with Dagger.
THEN go to the Altar, at the Cords 25,24.
Kill the spawn that comes when you use the dagger, and go back to Booty Bay.

For those with out any type of map coord's (like myself ... mods won't work for some reason) the altar is WELL below water close to where you'll see the very tall slab of rock jutting from the water's surface. It is on the opposite side from the shore, between the slab and the shore, so to speak ... it has some type of glowing aura around it . I submitted a couple screenies ... the "slab" and underwater from it.

overall this is a pretty easy quest ! i did it ( lvl 35 hunter ) with my lvl 38 friend and we had absolutely no problems. but i do sugest taking a friend or 2 bc there is 35-36 elite murlocs there and the spawn that comes out of the altar is lvl 40 not elite.

I did this quest at level 42, I could just swim to the altar and kill Gazban. He is a level 40 mob without any special difficulty.
If you're lower I'd imagine you might have to kill a murloc or two.

As 40, I had to kill two murlocs to get a clear path to the altar. After they were dead, I just scooted into max range from the altar and spawned Gazban, and easily killed him

As a shaman it was pretty easy - just gotta pop a stoneclaw totem and hustle your ass to detroy the altar and kite the goblin back to shore or away from the murlocs

This quest is bugged. It is impossible to complete because you cannot summon Gazban. I'd recommend doing what I did and open up a GM ticket about it. hopefully, enough tickets will get Blizzard to fix it.

Ok, I abandoned it and got it again and it still did not work for my hunter. Was about to give up on it for good. How ever as I was about to leave I decided just for the heck of it to dismiss my pet and try one last time. It worked just fine after my pet was gone.

Hope that helps hunters and maybe warlocks as well at least.

An Underwater Breathing Potion makes this quest a whole lot easier, since you might have to do some fighting underwater.

As a 40 warrior I swam down to the alter and killed the spawn no problem, didnt have to kill any murlocs

The quest isn't "Bugged" exactly.

The problem is the range of the action for the Altar is long than the range for the Knife. What you need to do, is get in close to the altar, and Use the Knife and mouse over the altar, if your close enough, the boarder will be blue.

At this point, if you click to use the Knfie, it won't work. But if you escape, and simply activate the Altar from that distance, Gazban will spawn and you can complete the quest.

I soloed this as a 38 night elf druid. My advantages were having sea lion form so I could breathe underwater and the ability to heal while in combat with the 35 elite monsters.

Swim down to the glowing blue altar and approach from east side. There are only 2 murlocks there instead of 3 - 4 on the west side. From a distance, shift to druid/natural form and hit one with Entangling Roots, follow with the rest of your spells to get him down to about 2/3 health before he comes at you. Melee with your best weapon. Cast Regrowth to stay alive. Shift back to Sea Lion form to breathe (you can still attack in this form). Once breath bar is gone, shift to druid form and you'll probably have to cast Regrowth again. Smack him a few more times and he's dead.

Give it a few seconds to get your health/mana back and get the other murlock. Try to do this close to the east side of the altar. The other murlocks didn't aggro me from there. Right click Catelyn's Blade, destroy the altar and get ready for melee with Grezban (or whatever his name is). He spawns instantly. If you have enough health/mana left, he'll be pretty easy to take down as he's a 40 but not elite. Watch your breath and shift into sea lion form when needed so you don't drown.

While you are in the area, you can get several blue pearls from the giant clams which can be used for Pearl Diving, which comes from a character in the Badlands.

I did this quest as a lvl 40 lock demon spec and I only had trouble with the 2 oracles on the other side was a hunter and oracle so prolly would have been easier to go that way but still able to be done solo as a lvl 40 lock demon spec.

I tried taking the "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3" book that you get in Stromwind Library with me, and was able to summon Gazban. Not sure how much of that was just luck, though.

Solo'ed this easily as a level 40 hunter. Only had to kill one murloc, then summoned Gazban, pulled him up to the surface, let pet get aggro, and pew pew'd the crap out of him. Easy quest.

After the 2.3 Patch, the murlocs are note Elites so this quest is easy.
As well for the Flight Path between the camp and Booty Bay makes it a "Hit 'n Run" quest.

Didn't have any trouble at all summoning "Gazban" Worked like a charm!

The robes are blue.
Make sure you have the "legends of Gurubashi, volume 3". It was not working for me before that.
Found Gazban at the near island, click on him for good luck. I don't know if it does anything, then dove to the altalr and tried to summon him for about 5 minutes. I was ready to give up and there he was. easy kill. lvl 43. By the way I had tried without the book for about 1 and half hour, then read that it had work for some with the book. tried it and I completed the quest. Good luck. this is a pain of a quest. Nice reward though

Warlocks will have an easy time with this with their Unending Breath. If you happen to see any warlocks nearby, ask them to cast it on you. It helps.

As of post patch 2.3 this quest is still bugged, blizzard has A LOT of time to try to fix this, and they haven't done it. Just goes to show how lazy they are.

I tried this today, and it worked the first try. Here is what state I was in and what I did:

I was on the Magical Analysis task (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=602) when I logged in.
I had gotten the book Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3 (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=3899) with the Library Scrip (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=3898#comments), the book was in my bank.
I picked up some water breathing potion knowing I would be trying this.
I finished Magical Analysis.
Got the quest Ansirem's Key (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=603).
Flew to Booty Bay, tuned in Ansirem's Key quest.
Got "Pretty Boy" Duncan quest (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=610).
Did the "Pretty Boy" Duncan quest, turned it in.
Got The Curse of the Tides.
Went out there, drank a water breathing potion and cleared out all the murlocks near the altar.
I then opened my inventory, right clicked on Catelyn's Blade, then clicked on the altar.
I saw in the chat:
Short Jon Mithril yells: Ah, hits the spot!
Gazeban says: Oh now you've gone and angered me! Time to see the true force of the Stone of Tides!

Gazeban showed up, I killed him and got the Stone of the Tides.

Don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me. Maybe it was because I didn't log out between certain stages, perhaps because I right-clicked on the blade, then the alter, no clue, but I hope it helps.
Also while you're in the vicinity it's might be worth picking up 9 Blue Pearls for the Badlands quest Pearl Diving (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=705).

Hunters make sure your pet is dismissed when yu summon "Gazban"...You can call your pet back once the summon is complete. I had this problem...piece of cake once I figured out to dismiss pet...(non-elite murlocs now) ^^ "Hit and Run"..Well put

For anyone having trouble with this quest the key is to simply keep trying. After reading many of the comments here in which people had come back and got it working I was determined to make this quest finished. It was also humorous to spam the entire STV with yells that appear from every attempt.

After about 10 minutes straight of trying I was able to get this quest to work on my Druid. It didn't require anything special, I would make about 4-5 attempts, shape shift for air, and repeat as necessary.

If you are determined to see this questline to the end perserverence is the best advice I can give, it WILL eventually work.

As of 26/12/07 worked fine just after a server reboot.

The bug comes in my opinion from people stucking gazban by trying to pull him to the surface
Just be sure to be the first to do him properly after a reboot :)

- clean the 4 murlocs around
- approach the stone of the tides from any side but not from the top
- summon gazban, kill him just where he pops and voila =D

On my server, when I went there, this was fixed. I was able to summon the mob more than once - just kill it and then click on the altar again. Maybe it used to check a flag to see if you had summoned/killed it and they took the check out. In any case, it came for me twice, right away. I just clicked on the altar right away.

I have no idea why people don't ask their guild alchemist for a water breathing potion or buy one - should be just a few silver. The 30 minute potion takes a couple of those blackmouth oil fish, and stranglekelp. A potion makes a quest like this simple. I wasted one of the higher level ones, and then searched for kelp for 45 minutes.

im not sure but i think if you delete the "library script" item out of your inventory the quest becomes bugged and you are unable to summon gazban.

Wouldn't work for me.
Until I took the Library Script to the Library in Stormwind, talked to the Librarian and got the book "Legends of Gurabashi, Vol 3"

I tried to do it again, and still no luck. So I dropped the quest and then went and got it again, and it worked.

I think you have to have the Legends book in your inventory BEFORE you accept this quest

As of 2008.01.19. i was struggling with the quest (seemed bugged).. was using the Knife for several times, still nothing.. relogged, used again, still nothing.. then eventually once Gazban spawned. I think i was using the Knife for like 15-20 times when it spawned at last.

I say this isn't how it is intended to work, but if it fails for you, keep trying for several times, maybe you will have luck once.

I'd like to note that:

A: This is also an area where you can get the second troll legend, in case you know where that is, or if you're on that quest, too.

B: Warlocks can give you a buff, and Alchemists can make you a potion, that, when its effect is on you, can let you breathe underwater for a time long enough to destroy the Murlocs' 'hometown advantage.'

Soloed as a 36 Ret Paladin

Pulled the nearby mobs away, one at a time, used the knife. Pulled him to the surface (had to bubble to keep from drowning), Sanctity Aura, Judgement of the Crusader, Seal of Command, Consecration, Hammer of Justice, Judgement of Command.

your pet is bugged under water and will not attack gazban, then I died of the breath because I was only thinking about how I could get my pet attack him, then my pet and gazban evaded and it was a big fail :(

As of some time recently (2.3?) the murlocs aren't elite.

I soloed this quest easily as a level 35 prot specced paladin. The murlocs are still yellow to you, so pull them with judgement of justice, and have at them, they are simple to kill when they can't run. I killed the two murlocs on their own between the altar and the 'mountain'. Then summon Gazban, and it's as simple as take his damage and kill him. I probably didn't 'need' to heal, but I used gift of the naaru about half way through the fight just to be on the safe side and finished the fight with around half my health left still.

He hit me like a wuss (40 damage crushing on mail), but he has a stun attack too, so if you do need to heal, do it early, just incase he manages to stun and kill you later.

On the note of this quest being heavily bugged, I had the book in my inventory, just incase i needed it sometime down the track. Seems i didn't, but I summoned him successfully three times (on the same char) without any troubles. Luck? Who knows.

ACCK! I finally got this to work (after 5 tries and a week). Being a mage, I couldn't pass up on the robe. I abandoned 'the curse of tides' quest on monday night (before Tuesday reboot).I also made sure I had a copy of the gurubashi book in my personal inventory, not my bank, before reboot.
After servers came back up on Tuesday I revisited Catelyn the Blade(still with book in pack just to be sure). You don't have to rekill Pretty Boy, she gives you the knife this time and the quest again. Made my way to the altar and just right clicked on it and gazban appeared no problem.
If you are not a mage or warlock, I would not bother with this, loot not worth headache for other classes. Also, water breathing potion a plus but not really necessary. Hope this helps someone else. What a friggin pain in the a**!!!

Okay I should of come here first and read all of the responses, I only read the coordinates and went to go get my phat robes for my 38 mage; no luck so I came back and read all the replies and learned that u need the book "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3" once I had that in my inventory it was no problem. I however can't speak as to how hard the mob was as I used my lock to kill him.

I used the knife to open the altar and Gazban did not come out, nothing happened. Got the bar saying it was focusing but nothing after that. Tried a few times to no avail. May try coming back another day.

This was with a lvl 48 druid (quest had been lingering in my log a while). I tried both with and without the aquatic form just in case. Nada.

I just got the message for a server restart, so I rushed to the bank, got Catelyn's Blade and went to the altar of the tides.

I waited for the server to come back, and on the first try, I got a spawn.
I'm not sure of what causes the problem, but many ppl manages this quest in different ways.
As a lvl 41 BM Hunter, I Prowled and "stayed" my pet a little far from the altar and as soon as Gazban spawned, I ran to my pet, activating Intimidate. The remain was easy, you hunters know the drill. Your pet holds the aggro, you heal him and dps FTW.

BTW I did NOT have the Gurubashi book on me. Nor have I ever got it from the quest.

I know that if someone did this before you, there was an annoying reset timer. Esp when there were elites in the area and you couldn't breath underwater. I suspect if you are the first one there after a reset...it will work. Then the reset timer just craps out

I just did this quest today. 3/22/08 and had no problems at all. I swam out and looked down to see the glowing alter. I went in where there was only 2 murlocks. Killed them then right clicked on the alter...The guy came out, killed him and i was done. Easy as that. Didn't need a book either. So either the bug is fixed or i got lucky?

I was doing this quest with my rogue, first try, right after i the summon finished, i quickly stealthed, and I saw Gazban appear, and suddenly disappear, so i tried again, and nothing, so I abandoned the quest, and got it again, and tried the summoning again, and no luck. Guess its still bugged. :(

if the mob does not spawn, try logoff and logon again,
i tried 3 times, each time mob spawned, but in evade mode first; try swim up while keeping arrgo.
during the last time, i swam to the surface, he followed but in evade when i reached surface, i had to swim down to attack him after full breath... and quest done. good luck

This quest seems to work once you have the book, which you get with a library scrip - go hand it in at SW library (in the keep) and get Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3

This quest is strange, I used dagger on the altar and see the red shout of gazban saying something about what draws me to the altar? but I wait and he is no where. And mob Map says he's on the island with water elementals nearby so I swim there and have track humanoids, and see a green NPC dot and huh?! it's Gazban wandering around but I can't kill him or anything as he's green and not red and so go back try and use knife on altar but still nothing. oO it's wierd quest.

Quest is not bugged. I too thought that it might be, tried several times with the focusing bar up to get the mob to spawn. Then, I noticed that the blade icon (where it shows u the blue hand which will light up when u cover the quest proc) was not lit. The gear icon was lighting up, but not the hand icon. Proc the mob by moving CLOSER to the altar and the blade will proc the mob to spawn. All non-elite these days.

ok well in order to do this quest you have to get the iron boots from the ice caverns. once you have you can proceed to the coords and equip them. you will sink to the bottom and make sure you run out of air.

in other wrrds. this quest is useless. it is bugged. and ive gotten that damned book and it still did not work for me. maybe its because i am white.

The quest does work, and you DO NOT need "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3". I completed the quest after a couple log-in's and log-outs.

Make sure you are using a breathing potion. Right click on the altar. Gazban will yell that he is drawn to the altar. He *may not* appear immediately. If he appears right away, make sure you attack fast or he will Evade. Do not run away or move before you attack him, or he will Evade. If he doesn't appear immediately .. just wait there approx 10 mins... try not to move around from your spot, then right click the altar again.. and he appears. After he appears attack him, and he will turn into a big water elemental. kill him then you're done.

Quest is still bugged. The hunter that joined me on the quest tried dismissing her pet, that didn't help. We eventually got the summon to work after I acquired "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3" from the Stormwind Library as mentioned lower down in this post.

Ok, forget all this business with the Gurubashi book, you use Catelyn's blade on the Altar, if Gazban doesn't appear, surface, log out of the game & log back in & try again. Worked for me, just don't try to kite him to the surface, he almost always will go on evade mode, he will be able to kill u, but u can't hurt him -.-
Instead just kill him where he spawns.
Best bring an underwater breathing potion, or have a nearby lock buff u, like I did.
Now excuse me while I go change into this nice Robe of Crystal Waters

The deal about having the "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3" trash quality book in your inventory to successfully activate the quest (a book that is not mentioned anywhere in the quest notes for any step of the quest line) is either:
1) An urban legend. People confusing lucking out on being able to activate the Altar of the Tides with the book being responsible (but its really not).
or
2) The book no longer works in WoW 2.4.2.

Would think its much more likely 1) as there is nothing anywhere in the quest line that makes any mention of the book. As well as the fact the book is currently of "poor" quality (the name of it is gray); quest items are of common (white) or better quality.

In any case, tried activating the Altar without the book (but with the Library Scrip in pack). 30 tries or so over 10 minutes, received the "Focusing..." message, but the mob did not spawn. Then I filed a GM report. "Its a known issue. We are really sorry..." was the response.

Finally I actually turned in my Library Scrip at the SW library and got the infamous book. Went back, spent 20 minutes clicking on the Altar, nothing except the "focusing" message.

So don't get your hopes up about being able to complete this quest until a WoW patch is released stating that its fixed...or you luck out.

This quest seemed bugged until I read a different set of threads. We did not need the book Legend of Gurubashi vol 3. Did this 2 nites ago.

Best to try this with a water breathing potion. If not, then just clear the murlocs from the north side of the altar at 25,24 (the side where the 2nd troll legend was found). Then using the blade, click on the altar from the NORTH side (only blizz knows why this makes sense).

Did it twice in 30 min and twice immediately summoned Gazban and his elemental buddy. If you do not have a water breathing potion, then haul it back up to the top after summoning him and they will follow. Kill them at the surface and loot.

After several frustrating attempts to complete this quest (i.e., "focusing" on the altar did nothing), I JUST did the following on Feathermoon:

Retrieved Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3 from the Stormwind Library
Returned to Catelyn the Blade in Booty Bay, abandoned and re-accepted The Curse of the Tides
Returned to the altar (@ )
After "focusing" yet again, Gazban appears

After killing him and retrieving the Stone of the Tides, I was actually able to resummon him several times, resulting in a couple of silvers worth of loot.

As previously suggested, a Waterbreathing Potion helps.

After 20+ tries, going on all sides, all corners, different ranges, ect, there was no spawn, no yells, no anything.
This quest really isn't worth it, if you're after the robes,http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10762 are much easier to get, and only lose 2 int.
Unless you have breathing potions or are a warlock or with one, this quest is a huge waste of time.

Finished this quest w/ my lvl44 Draenei shaman easily.

Head directly towards the Altar of the Tides (loc. 25, 24 underwater). Used Water Breathing spell. The altar requires Catelyn's Blade; after clicking, Gazban will appear beside you and will transform into a water-elemental form.

I really didn't have to do anything. I swam down to the alter, killed 2 marlocs and Gazban was right there. First he dissapeared but when i got closer he was just in stealth. I killed him took the stone and the dagger the girl gave me was just useless to me. :D

i remember seeing gazban near where i killed water elementals a few hours before, on the "mystery island". when recieving this quest i just went back to that spot...sure enough he ran up to me, killed him at lvl 36 (loc), looted, and the quest was complete.

i didn't even go underwater to do this like i had last year with my druid, to the altar.

Not sure if this still classifies as a "bug," but I never had to summon Gazban. The quest description states to use Catelyn's Blade on the Altar to summon Gazban, I shot down an underwater breathing elixir and found Gazban just hangin out by the alter. I never had to summon him. I went down, killed him, looted him & got what I came for, then finished his Murloc friends & left before I even ticked 2 minutes off of my elixir. Good enough for me!

That quest can be really annoying. I saw Gazban on that island after doing things with altar, but he was 'friendly' to me. Wierd. I think they should make him agrresive with players on the begging, but they didn't.

ive just completed this quest

after using the knife on the alter around 15 times i tried it after clearing some murlocs around the area

i cleared a murloc warrior+hunter that was north of the alter, then tried the alter, and he appeared :)

Gazban seems to be permanently bugged roaming around the haunted isle. As of 9/1/08 he roams the island popping in and out of his "phase out." If you can't find him at first just look around as he paths the whole island.

The first time I tried the summon he did come but evaded all attacks. I resurfaced from the water, resummoned and he came. Easy kill at level 42, looted, and went on my way.

The coordinates 25,24 are exact as to where the Alter of the Tides is located.

I found that this quest was bugged for me too - I went down to the altar, right clicked and nothing happened. Tried this several times, then I tried right clicking on the actual dagger in my inventory and selecting the altar like that and it worked first time, maybe you should try doing this instead of right clicking on it?

Spoke to a GM. This quest is still bugged in the matter that if someone summons Gazban and subsequently dies other people cannot summon him and kill him (he will most likely appear friendly to you).

After something like 2-3 hours pass you ought to be able to give it a try again.

This quest is definatley bugged. Today 6th October 2008. Level 40 Hunter, I went there, clicked... nothing. Clicked again nothing. I had to go up to take my breath, almost died. Went back again, same thing. After the 3rd dive the guy appeared.

You DON'T need any book or so... it's just plain luck.

October 8, 2008. I didn't even need to use Catelyn's Blade, Gazban was just there. I guess that was there way of fixing it. I actually remember doing the elemental quest and him patrolling across the islands. So, maybe if you wait a while he will come there. Or you could try to find him and hope he still drops it if he is not near the altar.

Bugged as of last patch, October 16th, 2008.

No amount of clicking on the alter will get Gazben to come after you.

He just sits on the alter and he's friendly green and can't be attacked. Click on him and he tells you that 'Time is Money'.

Go over the haunted isle to find him there, and he's still friendly green and can't be attacked.

Unless you really want the robe, don't even bother with this quest.

Just skip it.

Infact, you may want to stop as soon as he tries to send you out to Dalaran ruins...

That's my opinion anyways. It's not worth the trouble for a little experience, but it might be for the robe.

Also, I'd like to add that a few days before I got to this point on the quest, Gazban was walking around the island like he always does, but hostile instead of passive. He attacked me a few times and I had to kill him once or twice. He respawned hostile. I am not sure what's going on here..

well i am in a situation where he is allready at the stone when i get there(in goblin form) but he is "green" and i cant attack him. as a result of him allready being there i cant summon him, no matter how many times i try clicking. anyone know how i can fix this? blizzard should have fixed this thing by now.

When I went out there the mob (Gazban) was friendly and I could not attack him nor would he spawn or turn hostile when i used the knife on that altar, tried for about 5 mins with no results. Also tried attacking him on the island he wanders around on with no luck also, even put myself as at war with BB to see if that would work, no luck.

Dec. 18, 2008. I tried at least 20 times to destroy the altar with the blade. When you right-click on the blade and then on the part of the altar that lights up, some kind of over-time spell affects Gazban, and sometimes there is a sound effect (like a zap) but he remains green and unattackable. I had the book in my inventory, so I don't think the book helps. I'm going to keep trying because I really want that quest reward. I wonder how often it works. Last time reported here seems to be June 2008. Has anybody successfully completed this quest since the most recent patch? Has anyone reported this bug to Blizzard (recently)?

P.S. I just noticed there is a post further down in this thread, by sakis001 on 12/26/2007 (Patch 2.3.0), that says Blizzard suggested abandoning the quest and taking it again. Three or so other posts confirm this worked for them. I'm mentioning it here because this is a long thread and its easy to miss things that might be worth a try.

Ive tried everything in the book... I've tried it naked, targetting Gazban, clicking knife in inventory, no buffs, with book, and as a snowman. NOTHING WORKS!
Come on Blizzard...take a couple mins off Northrend and fix Azeroth!

Ive looked this quests up on the WoW forums, WoWhead, Allakhazam, WoWiki, and Thottbot, and its basically the same thing. It either works, or it doesn't.

Don't waste your time on contacting a GM, from all these sources I listed, the people have stated time and time again that the GMs obviously don't care. This has been a problem since the beginning of time, and they have let 2 expansions fly by without even glancing at fixing this quest. The GMs will either refer you to the forums, tell you the quest is not bugged, or tell you that they are looking into it - Thats one hell of a long time to look into an easily fixed quest, and they aren't making any attempts to fix old quests, as a previous poster said, they are probobly too busy rolling in their money.

Sometimes if your lucky, apparently the goblin can already be there, and attackable, or, in some rare cases, the goblin can be summoned like it is supposed to be - sometimes the goblin evades, and there are a lot of cases in which people drown to death, but thats much nicer than the 30 minutes to 3 hours people can spend figuring this thing out.

Other times, which is the more frequent case, he can be (but not always) standing next to the alter and/or on the island and is friendly, and the item they give you to summon him doesn't do anything.

I spent about 2 hours researching the quest and why the heck its screwed up, and no matter what you do, your not going to fix it. Your positioning by the alter doesn't make a difference, and I have even tried relogging, the reload UI command (which was recommended by a post on thottbot, which didn't work, but for those like me who want to get every quest in the game done no matter how long it takes, the command is /console reloadui)

To sum it up, if your not looking for the rep, the credit towards achievments, don't waste your time. Else, wait for a restart, and hope it works.

EDIT: Killing off a couple myths people have that people believe fix the quest

First - the book that people claim you need is not anything but a myth, having a random gray text book in your bag will not help you in any way shape or form.

Second - dropping and retaking the quest doesn't work.

Third - relogging doesn't work.

Fourth - Killing nearby creatures doesn't do anything of use.

Blizzard may be cruel at times - but I can assure you they would not make you carry a random book to finish a quest. Don't try and go searching for some reason why its bugged (but if you stumble across a solid reason why it is bugged and how a player can avoid it - and not any random book you need in your bag - than you may want to share with the world)

Ill try and confirm if the server restart fixes this or not tomarrow when they go down, and ill toss up another edit. Most likely it does.

- Server restart didn't do crap, I got on probobly 5 minutes after the restart, someone else must have beat me to the quest and screwed it up for me. The goblin is just sitting next to the alter and is friendly, and hes also on the island, friendly as well. Tried using the blade 20+ times, no luck. It seems that as a result of using the blade, the goblin will cast a spell Phase out, which makes him stealthed, but since im a good 10 levels above him, I can usually see him withen a pretty far distance. Both the goblin by the alter, and on the island use this spell.

Don't waste your time with GM's, they can't do anything. They have strict rules about giving quest items to players, and they can;t reset the mob or do anything for you. Heres a screen shot of my conversation with a GM about the topic. Ground looks a bit weird, because I had to remove the lines of text saying what I looted.

i have noticed that gazban ( if that really is his true name! ) standing next to the alter with a buff on him called phased out. I got bored and went tanking the water elementals and BAM there he was i tried killing him there but he is friendly on the shore and in the water!

I tried this quest and i went to the altar where the swirl animation was already happening and Gazban was just sitting there by the altar. I couldn't attack him because he was friendly to me and all he was doing was swimming in place and occasionally casted Phase Out which just made him transparent. Whenever i used the knife on the altar nothing happened. I lost patience after the 50th time and just abandoned it.

unless you're willing to waste an eternity for a blue you're going to get rid of in a few levels, don't bother with this quest.

This quest is screwed. So I tried about ten time to "focus" the altar. Eventually I believe it worked, however something invisible was attacking me. Gazban was still standing there not moving - buggy to say the least.

As of 1-10-2009, this quest is still bugged. I'm a 45 mage, and I couldn't summon Gazban, because he was permanently spawned. I did nothing but try to somehow summon him again for about half an hour (about 100 tries), and it never worked. I tried from every angle, and the result was no different. I tried logging out and back in three times, and still... nothing. But my fiance (a hunter) did the quest a few months ago, and everything went swimmingly on his first try.

Bah. I'm so frustrated, and I really want that robe!

I've tried this quest over 3 years with about 8 different toons with the same result despite the fact that they've changed how this quest works many times. The only constant is that the quest never works. It doesn't matter what angle I try clicking from, whether I initiate by using the knife first or not, if I have the troll legends book in my inventory from the SW library or not, if I kill the 4 murlocs in proximity to the stone or not, nothing matters except luck which is, as far as I'm concerned, the only reason that anyone is able to finish this quest. Gazban, since he's been added a long time back, is always walking around the haunted island nearby but is not attackable there and he's always also at the stone underwater and is not attackable there either no matter what I do. This quest sucks, sucks, sucks, and to avoid potential aggrevation from trying to make it work just don't bother acquiring it is my best advice. It's pretty sad that despite significant changes to how this quest is done and the npc's involved since original WoW, they are unable to make this quest work. Amazing. This comment is inspired by trying it yesterday on my pally with the same results as always, none. Like I said, I even tried the hairbrain scheme of getting the Troll Legends book from the library with my library scrip since the scrip is for some reason involved in this quest but that is NOT the reason why.

Just tried this after patch 3.0.8 with a L36 NE hunter. Gazban was sitting down there, but could not be attacked. The quest cannot be completed as a result. Just to confirm I went back to Stormwind and picked up the book and even dropped the quest and picked it up again with no luck.

Followup: I sent two tickets regarding this issue but did not hear anything other than "Your information will be added to our own".

However, I did come back the next day (1/21/09) after rolling restarts were performed on all realms and Gazban was spawned as *hostile*. I was a bit excited so just went and killed him and looted the quest item, ignoring the murloc adds and barely escaping. Quest is now complete. I can only suggest that you go back after server restarts to try again.

What I don't understand is, there are many quests in the game where doing something causes an NPC to change from friendly to hostile or the other way around. Wasn't he supposed to turn into a water elemental and threaten you with "the true power" or something? This seems amazingly simple a problem for Blizz to fix. The goblin in this quest is still often bugged as of patch 3.0.8 It has something to do with his spawning and getting "stuck" somewhere.

BUT....You don't even have to go to the altar to complete the quest. I think Blizzard "fixed" it by making the goblin always be aggressive. I've went back to the island about 10 times over the past week (with a server reset in the middle), and he has always been aggressive - even when roaming the island. So when you have this quest you can just go to the island to kill him AND he turns into the water elemental like he is supposed too... He still drops the quest item you need (This is because the spawn of him at the altar and the spawn of him on the island are the same mobID)

As of Patch 3.0.9, this quest APPEARS to be fixed. Gazban will now aggro automatically, in all his incarnations. This means you can, and probably will be jumped on the island in preceding parts of the questline. This happened on my Horde character though, and Horde characters in general never seemed to have as many problems with this as Alliance did.

Either that or my server (Illidan) was being screwy.

Quest is most definitely bugged. I just completed it with my lvl 38 warrior, and I had just killed the 2nd of 2 murlocs on one side and was swimming just over the rock 'wall' there. Not even next to the altar yet, when Gazban appeared all on his own. Killed him without difficulty, and the quest was marked completed, and I had the Stone of Tides in my inventory. In the time it took to check the quest log, confirm that the item was in my inventory, and swim closer to the altar just to make sure that there was really nothing to do... Gazban spawned again, and I had to kill him a second time.

So it's not 'undoable' bugged - but it is bugged. I never did the summoning at all...

i cant describe how easy this was. Did it solo with a level 37 pally. Went underwater and started attacking 2 murlocs and gazban appeared while i was attacking them

Hes level 40 and is really easy to kill. I killed him and took the stone of the tides in seconds

Gazban has an interesting spawn rate. Swam out to the spot, dove and cleared Gazban and all the murlocs around the site before surfacing to catch my breath. Dove back down, killed Gazban again, then clicked on the altar and activated Gazban a third time, this time completing the quest (he dropped the orb this time). As I swam back and forth looting the murlocs, I swam over the altar and that spawned Gazban again. When I finished looting, there were three Gazban corpses floating over the altar and one off to the side, but I had to zoom to the surface as I was almost out of air so I couldn't grab a screenshot.

I just did this with my lvl 80 pally (I'm just running around doing low-level quests I skipped earlier, working on the Loremaster of the Eastern Kingdoms achievement).

Swam down to the altar, and Gazban was standing right there next to it. Zapped him with Exorcism and down he went, coughing up the Stone while he was at it.

Thinking I still needed to destroy the altar (I didn't read the quest text closely enough), I kept right-clicking the knife then clicking on the altar, which did nothing but make Gazban keep respawning. I killed him four more times, thinking the whole time he just had a quick respawn timer. The whole "use the knife to destroy the altar" was confusing the issue, because nothing happens to the altar. Like, you'd expect the blue glow on the altar to at least disappear to represent "destroying" it.

This quest really p****d me off! After reading the comments about having problems with this quest, I think the quest may be bugged. There appear to be two seperate triggers to having Gazban spawn: 1) Being within a certain distance from the altar (probably directly above it); 2) Clicking on the altar as required by the quest itself.

Gazban spawned on me 4 TIMES while I was at the altar. First time was after killing the murlocs before I even clicked on the altar. Second time was when I clicked on the altar, got the *focusing* bar, then he spawned (which I expected to happen). Then he spawned about 4 seconds later as I was going up for air, only this time he was in the exact spot I was in so I kept getting "target must be right in front of you" message everytime I tried to cast a spell so he meleed me to death without going into his elemental form. Then he spawned on me right after I resurrected since I was directly over the altar when I'd died. Luckily I killed his goblin butt before I ran out of hp.

Gazban is now a static spawn next to the altar, aswell as on the "haunted" island, where the Lesser Water Elemental are.

The altar still gives the option to use the dagger, it does sometimes summon him, but because of the change it is no longer required.

I remember the summon being bugged for a long time, and this seems like a slipshod way to fix the issue.

For me, Gazban was already there when I approached the altar. I killed him. Then swam to the altar, did the knife-thing and Gazban respawned. Killed him again. Took a quick look at the quest description, thought the slain would be enough. Then Gazban respawned again, killed him, looted and got out of there. I spent totally 5 minutes under water, including finding the altar and clearing 3 murlocs before I got to Gazban, so the respawn time must have been seconds.

OK, did this several years ago on my dwarf warrior, don't remember any issues or anything. Was clearing up quests in STV on my human priestess, lvl 65, and went to the island. Tried using Catelyn's blade on the altar of Naias (or whatever it's called) and nothing happened, I didn't remember the other underwater altar and hadn't read quest clearly this time. So, I came to WoWhead to look it up while standing at the altar of Naias, I heard myself being attacked so went back to WoW to check and guess who, yep gazban, killed him got the stone, etc. Then I went down to check the other altar (after finishing reading all these comments) and he was there also. Killed him again but could not 'use' the knife on the altar so I'm giving up on trying/checking and just gonna turn it in. Good luck to you all. I didn't have to destroy any altar to finish the quest.

I confused the Altar of Naias on the island with all of the water elementals on it with the Altar of Tides. Gazban (or at least one version of him) patrols the island, so I killed him and got the Stone of the Tides, then tried to use the knife on the altar. I then realized that I was in the wrong place, but the quest showed as having been completed.

I went back to Booty Bay and turned it in with no problems.

you do not need to use the dagger you can just kill Gazban to complete this quest. Gazban is standing to the left ( the side with only two merlocks on it) of the altar he is in a shadowmeld like phase. you kill him then you are all set and then you can get out of there faster.

What was strange is Gazban was there before I got there. I approach from the island that Carbonite said to go to, and when I approached the altar he was already there. I killed him and completed the quest without destroying the altar.

As a level 80 Draenei shaman who achieved Loremaster long ago, I could pick up this quest as of patch 4.0.3. I could not complete the quest - Gazban did not spawn after attacking the altar and he is not bugged standing there already. Anyone else confirm or explain? Feel free to downrate afterward.

im at the alter (25;23) and i used the blade on the stone, I also thought nothing had happened and that the quest might be bugged so i tried about three times, then i waited. Then Gazban (x3) appeared in the Arch doorway next to the Alter. I completed the Quest
