Here is a shopping list of base mats you need to complete this quest:

An Engineer with 235+ skill
A Blacksmith with 150+ skill
32 Solid Blasting Powder OR 64 Solid Stone
48 Mithril Ore OR Bars
16 Mageweave Cloth
2 Thorium Ore OR Bars
1 Gold Ore OR Bar
2 Coarse Grinding Stones OR 4 Coarse Stones.

For the Golden Rod, the Smith will need:
1 Gold Ore OR Bar
2 Coarse Grinding Stones OR 4 Coarse Stone

For everything else, the Engineer will need:
48 bars of Mithril.
32 Solid Blasting Powder OR 64 Solid Stones
16 Mageweave

Osacron has this slightly wrong. Hi-Explosive Bombs are created in batches of four so only two batches need to be crafted, reducing the materials required considerably.

- Thorium Ore (2)
- Gold Ore (1)
- Coarse Stone (4)
- Mithril Ore (22)
- Mageweave Cloth (10)
- Solid Stone (28)

TOTAL Skill
- Engineering
- Blacksmith

Send all 3 types of ore to some miner , make them all into bars.
Send Gold Bar, and Coarse Stone to Blacksmith to make Golden Rod
Send Mihril Bar, Mageweave Cloth and Solid Stone to Engineer to make Bombs and Unstable Trigger

I was having issues finding the unstable trigger. For the most part I purchased alot of these items on AH.
Downloaded the Quest Helper and its saying Ironforge has the Triggers.

Not sure if this quest is worth it for myself either....

I have the items. But when I spoke to the NPC the Complete Quest button is gray. Do I need to goto Plaquewood and destroy the marked buildings 1st?

Beserk1's list is very nearly accurate, just over by 2 coarse stones I belive... But here it's down so you can look at your options on the auction house.

Thorium Bars
Thorium Ore (2) OR Thorium Bar (2)

Golden Rod
Gold Ore (1) OR Gold Bar (1)
Coarse Grinding Stone (2)

Hi-Explosive Bombs (makes 4 per batch, so crafted twice) plus Unstable Triggers
Mithril Casings (4) OR Mithril Bar (12) OR Mithril Ore (12)
Solid Blasting Powder (4) OR Solid Stone (8)
Unstable Triggers (10) OR the following list:

Unstable Triggers
Mithril Bar (10) OR Mithril Ore (10)
Mageweave Cloth (10)
Solid Blasting Powder (10) OR Solid Stone (20)

A note on the Unstable Triggers... You'll need 8 to turn in, plus 2 to make the bombs.

auction house asking 29 gold for each unstable trigger. reward for quest is 1.75 gold. is spending 300 gold worth it for this quest?

These here Argent Dawn people commissioned ol' Smokey to do a little demolition work for 'em. Smokey's mammy ain't raised no dummy. When gold coin is slapped on the table, Smokey's services are available. That's my motto!

Now I'd be willing to split the commission with you if you're willing to do a little legwork. Here's the deal: I'm going to head over to Plaguewood and mark the buildings we need destroyed. You gather the components for the bombs. Meet back here when you've got everything. Deal?
