This is a horrible quest. I've spent at least half an hour trying to complete it on just about every character I've taken through 1k Needles, and haven't been successful once.

There's only a few of these guys in the whole region, and the drop rate is very low. Just spend the time grinding on wolves while you wait for one of them to spawn over and over.

i got mine at 62,45 also but the drop rate is kinda low and there r only two surveyors that spawn at a time so u mite have to kill sum beasts to make them respawn also i spotten one in 64,60 there r also thunderin bouldekinds there for u who need them

Got the drop off of a Digger near the Horde encampment on the border with Shimmering Flats. Also, Thundering Boulderkin can be found in this area which are needed for the quest "A Different Approach." http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9431

Very annoying quest for the rewards. I advise taking it and while questing through out Thousand Needles chances are high you'll run into enough of these guys to get the item. Which bring me to my next point the drop rate is quite low for NPCs that are pretty hard to find.

If you do need to go searching for them, go to the east of the Great Lift and follow the ridge till you get to the centaurs there about 3 or 4 that spawn frequently between there.

Oh my god.

Took a little more than an hour to complete this quest. About 3 trips around 1k needles.

Creator of this effing quest needs to be hung.

The Key to this is to follow the digger till he mines the rock on the hill (54,49) - THEN kill him. Drops EVERY time :)

just did it as a rogue, stealthed followed him, he dug the cliff rock, killed him, looted him, ta-da! The Ore. Confirmed and done.

I can confirm the comment of M310N...
His location is correct (54,49), kill the digger after he mines the rock, and you'll get the ore sample every time :-)

Killed Gobblesnick at 55,52 (Windbreak Canyon) he had the ore sample and a sweet pair of gloves.

Just went to 57,57 and saw a digger. Waited for him to finishing mining and killed him. Picked up the ore first time.

Killed one at 66,50 after he finished mining but he didn't drop the ore.

I believe you have to complete Weapons of Choice to be offered this quest. At least at level 32 Tatternack Steelforge would only offer me that quest.

Mine dropped off of a surveyor near the cliffside wall on the northeast end of thousand needles. I killed a digger first but no drop then i tried a surveyor after he dug and dropped on the first one of them i killed. That whole areafrom the northern part of that strip all the way south of there seems to have quite a few of them.

I killed about 20 of these at random with no luck. Then I read this and sure enough, I let one mine some rock at 51,48 and got it on the first drop.

Note that it only drops from Gravelsnout Diggers, Gravelsnout Surveyors and the rare spawn Gibblesnik. These are found only in the northen and southern parts of the zone.

(So do NOT try to get it from any of the Gravelsnout Foragers, Gravelsnout Kobolds or Gravelsnout Vermins that roams the central parts of the place as I did before I decided to look it up... That will make for a really bad droprate.) I don't think the mining animation has anything to do with the droprate.

The 'tips' listed above are incorrect. I followed it four times on mobs in the south and in the mid-region but it did not work. I moved upwards towards the north, and found a surveyor and killed him outright. So if you're starting this quest, try starting from the north, I guess it doesn't hurt to watch them mine.

I leveled up twice during this quest... this quest is horrid!

It is definitely not necessary to watch them mine. Saw a Gravelsnout Digger spawn, killed him before he had a chance to mine anything, and got the ore sample. Based on the few times Blizzard has denied superstitions about loot tables elsewhere, I'd bet it doesn't matter when or how you kill them. It's just a crappy drop rate, that's all.

As stated by other people, Wait until he finishes his mining animation, I killed a digger before he did it, no ore...found another and waited till his animation was over then I got the ore.

Best way to get it right now is to farm Gibblesnik (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=14427), he has a short respawn timer and drops random greens too, which can be sold and are far more useful than the quest reward. Of course kill other Kobolds if you see them, but look for Gibblesnik for sure, since the expansion no one farms rare spawns anymore making it a lot easier.

I waited for the mining animation, waited for him to finish mining, and then killed him. Still no ore drop. It seems to be coincidence when it is dropped.

New patch just came out this week, just got Ore on first kill of a Surveyor. Not sure if they upped the DR or if I just got really really lucky.

I got mine from a Surveyor near the border of Feralas. Waited for the mining animation to finish then got it first time. Coincidence?

This quest took me forever because I followed the 62.45 cords in The Barrens which is wrong!

This quest has to be done in Thousand Needles. I got the ore sample off of a Gravelsnout Digger around 9.18 (North West for those without cords) which is in the same spot that you can do A Dip in the Moonwell quest. Apparently you can also get it off of a Gravelsnout Surveyor around 11.13 close to where you would do A Different Approach quest as well.

I believe it's a low drop rate on the ore and it's bogus on attacking while or after mining. The Kobold toward the north surrounded by mobs seems to drop more often than the spawns east of the Great Lift. Good Luck Noobs.

Got my sample on my first kill at 62,48 - attacked him as soon as he stopped mining. This was on a L25 hunter.

Thought "why not?" and waited for the mining animation before killing them. First, a surveyor near feralas, then two kobolds in the middle area (I didn't expect it to drop but I killed them anyway, out of spite) then found two diggers near the salt flats and it dropped off the second one. Note that was 3 mobs that could possibly drop it in the entire length of thousand needles.

i watched the guy digging and killed him when he was done. for 5 times i had no drop but a couple of wool cloths and some coppers... then i watched the guy dig for 2 times, again killed him when he was done and guess what? it just doesn't drop. this is nonsense, i wonder if it's a bug or something... but i'm not going to give up!

The best way to do this quest (and how ive done it on all my chars) is to not go look for the mob, but to just keep an eye out while doing your other quests in 1k needles. And to even it out a bit, personally i have never had a problem with this quest and i always make sure to have it when i head to 1k needles since its, from my experience, VERY easy XP.

The reward sucks, so if you havent had it dropped by the time you're done in 1k needles, just abandon it. If you haven't had it dropped by then, you probably wont, and it isn't worth the effort.

Such an irritating quest with such a pointless reward. Honestly, I hope whoever made this quest got at least a slap in the face for his/her effort.

Sigh, so many people have problems... Makes me sad for them. I got it on my first surveyor. Just wanted to add a POST patch 3.0 note. Still the same... Standing on my surveyor @ 62.5, 48.5. Waited for the mining animation just in case... HAPPY HAPPY Druid...

The thing with letting him mine worked for me too. I let him dig and he had it right away. Though i killed lots of those other kobolds before which don't drop it anyway.

But it would make a lot of sense if there was some trick to it like letting him dig. Because otherwise it would be really annoying to have such a rare mob with such a low drop rate for a quest item.

Horrible drop rate. I did this once before on my main and again yesterday on my alt (28 BE Prot Pally). This one took me two days of regular game play to get. No luck on the first day. On the second day I spent an hour running along the walls surrounding 1k needles and killed 12-14 of these guys with no luck. I gave up and decided to work on another quest which is the one to kill Rock'alim in the northwestern part of 1k needles. I ran up to his reported location and spotted him right away. I aggroed and began my fight and halfway through noticed one of these diggers mining against the wall in the background about 30 yards away. I took down Rock'alim, looted and immediately ran to the digger and took him down. He dropped the ore sample. IMO the quest reward and even the XP for this quest is not worth the time it takes to complete it. The sword is useless and can't even be disenchanted. It might not be so bad if this was part of a quest chain or even had a follow-up quest but not the case for this one.

This quest was easily soloable by a 27 Warrior (Fury); the monsters around are soleable but can be dangerous in numbers. I found mine off the second kill of the Gravelsnout Digger's, although it was about 10 minutes apart before I found them. Wheather or not it is higher chance to kill the Kobold after he is done mining im not sure; I did get mine that way. It's only waiting 30 seconds for him to dig to find out.

This is not as u all say, I suggest u kill Giblesnik a 29 elite mob with about 900 hp. Easy and he has 100% droprate.

This quest seems to just be a deadend, it builds up a tiny tiny bit, and then nothing, what of the ore? what was it? was it strong? did Thrall like the weapon? I hate quests that do that, call me silly.

#1 Confirmed quest does suck!
#2 Drop rate is not 100%! Just killed 5 mobs did not drop. If you're wondering I did kill the right mob (Gravelsnout Surveyor).
#3 I spent over two hours and had Thousand Needles completely to myself now that everyone just levels by queing into dungeon finder.

I would like to add that I too believe this is a horrible quest. I've spent over an hour trying to find Surveyors and Diggers, and I found three, none of which had the damn ore. I strongly suggest you ignore this quest and move on with your life.

Waiting for them to dig and then killing them works perfect. Killed one before he dug and got nothing. Waited till the next one finished digging and got it on the second kill.

Travelers recently came from the south from a place called Thousand Needles. There they killed a kobold who had an unusual ore sample, but they would not sell it. I want a sample of that ore to examine.
