Tamat Interviews Mia Rose
So those of you who have been reading news (and watching some of those video interviews) over at our sister site,
Allakhazam
, will know Andrew "
Tamat
" Beegle, the editor-in-chief. Since we've been working together on editorial stuff on our respective sites, I've granted Tamat blogging privileges here on the Wowhead blog, so he can let you guys know when they have a particularly awesome story running over there.
Today's particularly awesome story is an interview with miss
Mia Rose
from CES this year. I admit to being a little reluctant at first ("oh ha ha cute girl plays WoW we get it"), but the shirt sold me—and as it turns out, she's a more hardcore WoW player than I am.
Those who are offended by mildly NSFW content are probably better off not clicking. :P
The interview is up on Allakhazam

This latest patch is a doozy, and if you're anything like me your realm is swarming with problems. Feel free to post any issues you may be having with the latest patch here, so we have a consolidated list.
Blizzard's official announcements on the subject:

Good luck, and cross your fingers that they get the kinks worked out soon. I'm going to try and keep this post updated as we find out more.

The Casual MMO?
So I've taken to reading
Allakhazam
's news posts lately, and just recently they came out with one that I think was an especially interesting read.
You can find the full story here:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=16670
Their new editor, "Pwyff", writes a topic that has some striking similarities to the things we've been discussing
here on the blog
for the last week or so, so I thought I'd take a moment to point it out so as to add to the discussion. Feel free to post your comments and thoughts here, or in the comments thread on the story if you happen to have an Allakhazam account.

It's Patch Day! Official Venting Location
In keeping with patch-day tradition, here is a single centralized location to vent all of your patch day woes. Who wants to take bets on how long the servers stay down today?
Feel free to post questions, comments, annoyances, flames and trolls here—let's just try and keep it clean. The patch notes, as always, are located here:

Did You Notice? Patch Changes in 3.0.8
Blizzard has been hard at work tinkering with professions, working on classes, and fixing a million other miscellaneous things to bring the game better in line with their vision.
In an effort to keep you guys from having to read all the boring details now that 3.0.8 (
patch notes
) is live, I've decided to to point out some changes or additions which I thought deserved extra attention. To quote Samuel L. Jackson, "Hold on to your butts!"

I'm sure there are some of you out there that have no idea what this is referenced to, so here's a

Dear Wowhead... (Episode 5)
Welcome back, dear friends! Today we have a letter from one of my colleagues in Silvermoon City. Perhaps we can help our mutual friend here with a problem of a...personal nature. Read on!
Dear Wowhead,
My name is Emeline Foxfire, and I'm an initiate of the Blood Knights here in Silvermoon. Me and my husband, Colin, have been Initiates together for what seems like forever! He's my everything, and I don't know what I'd do without him. Many are the days I fondly remember training with him. We'd tap mana crystals together, and then – my favorite – we'd
the energy from some unsuspecting fool. Those were the days!
The trouble is, ever since those crazy adventurers infiltrated the Isle of Quel'danas, and the Sunwell was restored, well...my husband isn't interested in
ing anymore. Oh sure, we'll have the occasional
Torrente Arcana
, but without the
, it's just not the same! It's like he just wants to get it over with as fast as possible – he doesn't take his
time
anymore.
I don't know what to do, Malgayne! I'm at my wit's end. What do you recommend?
Sincerely,

When Is a Newb Not a Noob?
Just a short philosophical question for you today, with any luck the real action will be in the comments. :)
I was having a conversation with a friend of mine today, someone who just started playing recently. Her priest is somewhere in her thirties now, and she asked me a question that I had never really stopped to consider – one of those questions that must
have
an answer, if you could only put your finger on what it was.
She asked me, "When do you stop being a newb?"

WoW: The Schizophrenic MMO
ArgentSun
posted a comment
here
a little while ago, and it started to get me thinking.
I love WoW. It's clearly the most successful video game ever made. It's a beautifully tailored, wonderfully epic experience, that gets better each time I look at it. But ArgentSun's comment made me realize that aside from all the things we love about WoW, as a
game
, it's completely schizophrenic.
WoW, I would argue, is built around a blatant self-deception.

Village of Warcraft: Small Scale Story Telling in WotLK
Yesterday,
Nabterayl
responded to one of
SBMrClean’s posts
about moral choices in WoW, and how they don't really exist. He says:
In other words, Blizzard is telling the story that Blizzard wants to tell (albeit with many loose ends and very, very slowly - how long did it take us to get anywhere with the new plague storyline? Almost six years?), and the players are really just along for the ride. WoW kind of has the perspective of the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds. That movie spends its entire time focusing on characters who, in any other movie, would be extras streaming past the camera.
Of course you can tell stories about people like that. But you have to stop and focus on them, and narratively speaking, WoW doesn't.
The original link is
here
.
In some ways I think I have to disagree with Nab's point. He's right about the structure. There is this two pronged duality in WoW that insists the PC is important and special while paying a lot of attention to the NPCs that, more than merely being outside the player's control, are basically un

2-Month Checkup
So the Wowhead Blog has been active for two whole months, as of today. This seemed like as good a time as any to stop and check in on how we're doing.
So, I'd love to hear everyone's opinion. How
are
we doing? Are you guys reading stories that you like, or that are interesting? What are the stories you skipped over? What are the ones that you'd like to see more of? Who's your favorite blogger? How often do you check the site? And are you linking your favorite articles to your friends, hm?
I'd love to have everyone post thoughts, comments and feedback in this comments thread. I can't guarantee that we'll
do
it (you have to write what you know, of course), but we'll certainly take it into account. ;)

Diabolocles, Tormentor of Children!
Everybody likes a good story, right? Everybody loves a good story about a hero overcoming tremendous odds to achieve victory even more, right?
No, those weren't rhetorical questions.
I
certainly do.
In particular, I'm a
huge sucker
for stories in which the main character is able to save the day and do the right thing exclusively because of the strength of his/her convictions. The quality that makes him/her able to save the day is that he/she wants to do the right thing more than anything else in the world.
What can I say? I'm a romantic. And yet, that's not really something that the story of my WoW characters can be about.

Dear Wowhead... (Episode 4)
Kindly forgive my lateness this week, dear readers! An unavoidable change of plans saw me making a quick flight back to Silvermoon City, many miles away from my usual writing desk here at the Legerdemain Lounge. Perhaps I'm in need of a letter to Miss Manners myself!
In any case, I have returned, and today I have a letter that comes to us postmarked from the Eastvale Logging Camp. Here goes:
Dear Wowhead,
I am a human paladin speaking for – believe it or not – a murloc from Elwynn Forest. While walking along one day, helping a young adventurer, I realized a murloc was talking to me! Anyway, on to the story. He says that his egg-mate recently left to go to another village, and he is heart-broken. He won't take my advice, but maybe he'll take yours.
Sincerely,
Bigghammer and a Murloc

Wowhead Comic #8
It's me again!
Didn't have much motivation this week to give you a full comic, so I made something... unusual.
Introducing the first of what will become the Azeroth Justice League!
Milk-Man the Magnificent, defender of the weak, savior to the malnourished.
I felt Taurens needed some love, they are after all big cuddly cows. And what better way to show my love than to dress one up in spandex, red undies, and a cape.
Remember kids, don't take it seriously. I make these silly comics for my own enjoyment, and I ask nothing in return.

A Little Spring (Winter?) Cleaning
So in an effort to try and clean things up a little bit around here, we've made a few little changes to our forum system. :)
For one thing, we've renamed the "Beginner's" forum, it's now called "
Help & Support
". We wanted to make it clear that this is not a "noob" forum. It's a place for people to ask the questions they can't seem to find answers to otherwise.
For another thing, we've decided it's finally time for the "Wrath of the Lich King" forum to go.

Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes – A Message from Blizzard
Blizzard has kindly asked us to make sure everyone is aware of the announcement they just made on the official forums:
Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes
For the last several weeks, our players have been experiencing periodic latency in both outdoor Northrend areas and Naxxramas, and we wanted to provide you with several updates on what we're doing to resolve these issues. As many players have discovered, the outdoor Northrend latency has been tied to activity in Wintergrasp. We are actively working on a server-side fix that should address the high latency experienced in the outdoor world when Wintergrasp is active. This fix is currently in testing on internal test realms and we anticipate that we'll be able to push it to live realms in the near future. Concerning Naxxramas, optimizations are being made that will address both the latency and disconnection issues affecting players while in that zone. These optimizations will be included with the next minor content patch.
We appreciate your patience as we work to address these issues.

I'm a Miner Forty-Niner
Just a quick update today. I thought it was worth pointing out that the
official patch notes
listed on the
European WoW Site
contained a very interesting note:
Mining veins and deposits no longer require multiple hits to receive all the ore. Players will receive around the same amount of ore, stone, and gems they would have received from multiple hits.
What's that? I can't hear you over the sound of millions of miners rejoicing.

Return of the Furious Five
Well, the five of us
finally
had the time to get together and run again tonight, so I figured I'd take a moment to post again to make sure you knew I hadn't forgotten. :)
This time we ran
Hellfire Ramparts
in about an hour, and found to our delight that we had time left over for a trip through the
Blood Furnace
– and it's a good thing we had the quest rewards from
Weaken the Ramparts
and
The Blood is Life
, or there would have been no loot at all (what good is
Aniquilador
to a dedicated protection warrior?).
In the process of doing them, though, I got to thinking.

It's Flat! Using Wowhead Maps
"Ka-kaw!"
The parrot spoke in a language I could not understand. Had I a cracker, I might try to coax the rainbow-colored Polly into guiding me to the nearest encampment...but empty-handed, I was forced to go it alone – all alone in the deep, damp jungle. The night was quickly approaching as the sun sat midway on the horizon. Unlike some of my unfortunate companions, I was smart enough to have brought my own set of charts and maps...but I suddenly realized that without proper knowledge I may as well not even possess them.
Insert Wowhead. We have a wonderful tool here aptly named
Wowhead Maps
. In this blog entry I will introduce the mapping system and show how to use it to explore, pinpoint, and share destinations with others. Stick around, it's definitely going to be a mappy New Year!
