It's time for our monthly lore collaboration with
Nobbel87
! In this series, Nobbel will examine the lore behind popular content on Wowhead. Today's video is the Story of the Tomb of Sargeras, highlighting the new raid and dungeon introduced in the last few months. We'll learn about the corruption of the Tomb, all of the bosses, discuss the ending cinematic, and speculate as to the future.
As usual, we'll include a transcript of the video with sections detailing helpful Wowhead links should you wish to experience the story firsthand in the game.
Hello everyone! Last week we covered the events of the Legion fall campaign and this week, to finish it all up, we’re finally going venture forth into the Tomb of Sargeras. Naturally, if you haven’t done the raid yet and you still want to experience it for yourself, be warned...spoilers ahead!
The Temple of Elune
Over 10,000 years ago during the War of the Ancients, the Legion was working on a gateway to the Twisting Nether within Suramar’s most prominent structure, the Temple of Elune. Grand Magistrix Elisande saw that the Legion did not have the best interest for their people in mind and they formed a plan to sabotage their efforts. Elisande and her allies sought out the potent artifacts they had gathered over the years. In particular, they knew that the Pillars of Creation, once used by the ancient keepers to shape and order Azeroth, they knew that they possessed the raw power that they needed to neutralize the Legion’s portal. Just as the Legion’s new portal began roaring to life, the sorcerers channeled their magic through the pillars. They wove a great spell that closed the howling gateway and locked it with a set of unbreakable seals. The rebellious Highborne had no plans to actually join the night elf resistance, instead they used the eye of Aman’thul to create their Nightwell which would nourish them and protect them as a massive shield was placed over their city while the other pillars would eventually find their way to different locations on the Broken Shore.
The War of the Ancients raged on and eventually lead to the sundering which split the land apart, shattered nearly 80% of the Kalimdor’s landmass and sucked a big part of the night elf land to the bottom of the sea, including this Temple of Elune.

The Guardian Aegwynn
824 years before the Dark Portal opened up, there was a massive battle between the avatar of Sargeras and the guardian Aegwynn. She conquered the vessel that held a portion of the titan’s power and spirit, yet was unaware that in her victory, Sargeras made use of her weakened state and infiltrated her body. She needed a place to store the remains of the avatar and after considering many locations to serve as the demon lord’s final resting place, in the end she chose the ancient night elven city of Suramar, some of which had been blasted to the bottom of the sea during the Sundering. When Elisande and her allies sealed off the gateway, they created a series of enchanted seals which would also negate nearby fel energies. Knowing that the Highborne’s seals would nullify whatever evil still lingered in Sargeras’ avatar, she buried the demon lord’s broken body within the sunken portion of Suramar. Aegwyn hoped Sargeras’ remains would lie undisturbed there until the end of time. The spirit of Sargeras inside of her caused quite bit of a trouble since he worked on pushing her away from the Council of Tirisfal, eventually leading to her abandoning Karazhan and making her Sanctum of the Guardian within the Tomb of Sargeras. When she decided to have a child to take over as guardian, the spirit of Sargeras passed on to her son Medivh who now not only had the incredible powers of the guardian, he also had the titan spirit inside of him.

Aegwynn's son Medivh plays a prominent role in Warcraft lore as well. In
The Story of the Rise of the Horde
, we have a whole section dedicated to Medivh's role in lore as well as in-game references such as
Uma noite em Karazhan
.
The First Gul’dan
Under that influence, he made contact with the orc warlock Gul’dan. Sargeras wanted Gul’dan and his horde to come in to their world and weaken it so they worked on creating the Dark Portal and the first horde invasion could begin. Gul’dan was all about getting power and inside Medivh’s mind he learned about the Tomb of Sargeras and the power that was resting inside. Eventually he left the Horde to its fate, made his way to the Tombs location and used his might to lift it out of the sea. Inside he found more than he bargained for. When Aegwynn imprisoned the avatar, she had also imprisoned a number of his demon followers at his side. Most of these creatures were dead or barely clinging to life. The guardian had believed that the tomb’s enchanted seals would keep them contained. That much was true – the demons would never have been able to escape the structure on their own. Yet over the millennia, some of them had fed on the avatar’s lingering power, regaining enough strength to prowl the tomb. At Sargeras’ command, fully aware of the orc’s betrayal, the creatures leapt from the shadows to tear Gul’dan’s followers apart. Then they turned their wrath on the warlock and flayed him alive, ripping the flesh and muscle from his bones.
His skull was taken by the few followers of Gul’dan that did survive their trip into the tomb, a skull that would eventually play a big part in Illidan’s journey. He absorbed the powers from the skull of Gul’dan, gaining the warlocks memories in the process. He accepted the quest of destroying the Lich King, a mission which took him into the tomb as well, in search of the eye of Sargeras, with the warden Maiev hot on his tail. She tried to put the betrayer back into his cage, while he used his might to bring the tomb down upon the warden and her troops. She was able to blink to her freedom while her remaining forces were forced to stay behind and find their demise in the tomb.
One of the few remaining survivors was Drak'thul - a hermit orc that stayed on the Broken Shore all these years. In the
Story of Drak'thul
, we trace his origins as well as how he's related to the
Habitante das Profundezas
.
Players can acquire the famous

Cathedral of Eternal Night
Eventually, alternate universe Gul’dan made his way into the tomb, found that power that was sealed off all the way back during the War of the Ancients, unlocked its power and used it to let the Legion in for yet another invasion. Now we have to reverse the damage done and stop them. We have the Pillars of Creation needed to do so and our first mission takes us into the Cathedral of Eternal Night.
Khadgar has studied the writing of Aegwynn who said that if her wards were compromised, a failsafe could be triggered by placing the Aegis of Aggramar upon an altar in the Cathedral. That’s our mission, but Mephistroth will use all his power to stop us. Thankfully we’re not going in alone as Illidan and Maiev join us on this mission.
Velen: “Illidan, convey the Aegis of Aggramar to the cathedral. I will descend into the tomb with Khadgar and hunt the monster down. Kil’jaeden’s reign of destruction will soon be ended!”
Maievh: “You are too quick to trust Illidan, Prophet. I will ensure he fulfills his duty.”
Khadgar: “Right. We have our orders. Good luck.”
“Our forces have engaged the Legion on the ground floor. We must place the Aegis in the tower before our losses grow insurmountable.”
“Ah, our guests of honor have finally arrived. I look forward to ripping those horns from your skull, Betrayer!”
“There is nowhere you can flee that I cannot reach you, demon!”
“Illidan! Curse that impetuous demon hunter!”
The Cathedral is in the upper chambers of the tomb and we can actually see the armies of Legionfall fighting with the demons down below as we make our way up. Illidan is never one to wait around as he quickly flies away with Maiev blinking behind him, so I guess it will just be up to us to get rid of the Legion forces standing in our way. We make our way through the Hall of the Moon up into the Twilight Grove where we find out that not even the plants are save from the Legion and their felborne botanists.

Dungeon Bosses
“You disturb nature’s perfection .”
Here it is where we find our first boss, Agronox, an ancient that once served the night elves priestess of the Temple of Elune. Now with the malevolence of the Legion infecting the cathedral, the guardian has absorbed fel eneriges through its roots. It has become twisted and corrupted, spreading the malice through the sanctuary he once protected, believing that he has finally achieved his ideal state.
“My end was written in the rings.”
Some asked if he was perhaps talking about the same rings we’re supposed to drown ourselves in according the whispers of Ill’gynoth, but I think it’s just a tree joke. The trees are way too punny in Legion.
Onwards and upwards we go to the Emerald Archives where on the stairs we meet up with Maiev again who’s fighting some Wyrmtongue.
“Illidan left behind a mess! Stay close...we shall carve a path through these demons.”
“Little fools wanna outsmart the Legion? Think again!”
“Books are for losers!”
This is actually the brother of Smashspite the Hateful, the one we fought with in Black Rook Hold and this mo’arg has no respect for knowledge or learning, feeling petty satisfaction as he crashed through ancient’s artifacts and tramples priceless tomes. He has been dispatched to wipe out the mortals entering the Cathedral’s Grand Library and amongst its vast collection are some interesting books, namely a few steamy romance novels which you can force Trashbite to knock on the floor. Ready the entire steamy romance saga before defeating Trashbite and you’ll earn yourself a nice achievement.
“Didn’t...think this...through...”
The imps and wyrmtongue are ready to evacuate the place as they quickly try to run to one of their portals, we go up to the path of illumination where the Fal’Dorei and spiders have made quite the mess, but nothing will stop us from reaching the top and we finally meet up with both Illidan and Maiev.
“Did you really think you could elude me, Illidan? Run again and I’ll shackle you like the beast you are.”
“Posture if you must, Maiev, but for now, do what you do best and follow me.”
“We’ve lost. The Legion broke our lines and pushed us out of the tomb. You’re all that stands between them and the Aegis. They are coming!”
“Let them come. Maiev and I will hold them on the stairs below.”
“Forgive me if my glaive finds your heart, Illidan. WIth so many demons about, it’s hard to distinguish you from the rest of this filth.”
The Legionfall army has been pushed out of the tomb again which is why we had to put in more effort with the Legionfall campaign to get back in. Right now, though, we’re our only hope left of putting the aegis in its proper spot but as we do, the Legion shows up.
Domatrax thinks that he can just show up and take the Aegis from us, but he has no idea what we had to go through to get it. Odyn had us jumping through hoops for this bad boy and no way in hell that this fel lord is going to take it away from us, no matter how many little portals he opens up with reinforcements. The Aegis protects us against his mightiest attacks and Domatrax goes down.
Illidan flies up to take care of the demons there and the cowards Mephistroth waited for this exact moment. He didn’t even have the courage to come in with the mighty demon hunter at our side as he tries to take us out, even hides in the shadows while making copies of himself, but Illidan does not leave us to our fate.
“Bewarde the shadows!”
“To me, heroes! Shield me with the Aegis while I tear the dreadlord from the shadows!”
“You cannot withstand the power of the Legion!”
With the Aegis we’re able to keep him safe while also destroying as many of the shadows created by Mephistroth until eventually the demon hunter is able to pull the dreadlord back into the light.
“There is nowhere left to run demon!”
“Run? Fool! I have led you to the slaughter.”
“The final...victory...will be ours...”
“What is this?”
“Can it be? The Guardian!”
Image of Aegwynn: “In ages past, this shield defended the young world soul against madness and corruption. Today, it serves those who fight for Azeroth.”
“I am Aegwynn, Guardian of Tirisfal. I left behind this echo of my power as a safeguard in the event that the wards I put in place to protect the tomb failed. Indeed, I sense that the master of the Burning Legion now schemes to claim his prize.”
“Yet there is still hope. By anchoring the Pillars of Creation in the halls below, you will restore my wards and push back against the invaders. Then you must venture into the depths of the tomb and use the Eye of Aman’Thul to eradicate the Felstorm and sever the Legion’s link to Azeroth.”
“But the Pillars alone cannot bring victory. Only a united army founded on strength and courage can conquer the Legion. When you and your allies are prepared for the final battle, my echo will return to aid you. The fate of Azeroth rests in your hands.”
“Khadgar will want to hear of this.”
“It seems preparations are in order.”
It’s interesting that the image of Aegwynn mentions that the aegis was once used to protect the world soul inside of Azeroth, that titan spirit that we have inside. So the aegis has been placed at the top and the image tells us that we must place the other pillars in the halls below and use the eye of aman’thul to eredicate the felstorm and sever the legion’s link to Azeroth. The legionfall campaign plays out until we’re ready to head back into the tomb and drive the Legion from Azeroth.

Tomb of Sargeras
Goroth
Khadgar: “Quickly, bolster our ranks! We must push through!”
“Leave none standing! If we fail here, Azeroth burns.”
Atrigan: ‘Yes! Let them come! Their bodies will fuel the flames of their burning world!”
Cinematic: Goroth comes crashing out of the sky, rams through a window and creates a massive crater to the lower sections of the tomb.
“Fall back”
Goroth knows how to make an entrance by murdering many of the troops we’ve gathered as well as the Legion forces in the Chamber of the Moon.
“Killing you will regain my masters favor.”
This guy doesn’t have the best track record with the Legion as apperantly he sucks so much, that punishment was in order. His flesh has searing wounds and with every move the behemoth makes, his flesh crackles and hisses with unending torment, a scourge he is happy to inflict upon those who oppose him.
“Pain rains upon you.”
During the fight he calls down comets and summons spikes out of the floor until he has gained enough fel energy and is ready to unleash his massive attack. Boulders will try to overrun our teammates, but the spikes are actually a blessing as they lower the boulders damage and gives the perfect hiding place as he unleashes the ultimate attack and he will have to go back to his master after failing once again.
Death: “More...agony...to come...”
The dwarf Durgan Stonestorm is ready to provide a speed buff for us and we have no idea where this dwarf came from or why he’s invited on this important mission, but his name does seem to be a reference to the song that nobody can remember, Sandstorm by Darude. To the right, we find an interesting rune on the wall, by clicking on it we gain the image of our Gul’dan as these are the runes he placed on the wall while going through the tomb. Maiev read them during Warcraft 3, explaining the fate of the orc and with some of the runes you actually see the spirits pop up and re-enact what happened as in Gul’dan killing one of his cowardly followers and him realizing that he’s going to die. Even his bones are present except of course...his skull.

Demonic Inquisition
Back in the Chamber of the Moon we have Illidan, Khadgar, Maiev and Velen who move with us to a section of the tomb that’s still sealed off and the only way of opening it is by placing the pillars in their proper locations.
“The echo of the guardian Aegwynn appears, just as she did in the cathedral.”
“I sealed each level of this temple so that no invader could descend into its depths. I never anticipated that the Legion would find another way to breach its dark heart.”
“My protective wards now bar your way. Each seal can only be opened with one of the Pillars of Creation. Be warned: the demons will stop at nothing to prevent your advance.”
“I can sense one of the Legion’s masters working to reanimate the Avatar of Sargeras. Should Kil’jaeden infuse that husk with the Dark Titan’s power, I do not know whether any force on this world can stop it.”
The image of Aegwynn also hands out a quest to collect 4 fragments of the guardian’s seal from the Maiden of Vigilance in order to move quicker through the raid. We move from the chamber of the moon into the conclave of torment.
"Admit that I am right. Break the body and the spirit follows. ”
”Physical pain? Bah! Mental anguish is the true weapon. Was it not the key to turning Rakeesh? ”
”Bah! It was the suffering I inflicted which...Hold! The mortals come! That fool Goroth has failed again!”
“Sooner than expected, but no matter. Our work begins!”
So Atrigan and Belac are responsible for the torment inflicted upon Rakeesh, Velen’s son, they were the ones who turned him into a follower of the Legion. Physical and mental pain that’s what these 2 are all about.
“This will hurt, I promise.”
“Your minds will break.”
Kil’jaeden has called on his best captors to lock us down here and they use both physical and mental attacks to inflict anguish upon us. Once their energy bar is full, you want to move away and attack the other for a little bit and when the anguish becomes too much, we’re forced to confess our actions against the Legion to the Demonic Inquisition. We’re transported into Belac’s fel prison to wrestle with our tormented soul and pick up Remnants of Hope. After dropping off our torment it’s back into the fight and as these two share their health, both of them go down at the same time. Where as Goroth might not look forward to the punishment that’s coming, these guys are a bit more enthusiastic about it.
Death: “The pain of failing the master. Our suffering will be...glorious...”
“This hammer forged ancient wonders and shaped the earth itself. Today it shatters’ the bonds of fate that seek to crush us all.”
The Hammer of Khaz’garoth is put in its proper place as we go back into the Chamber of the Moon into the hole that was created by Goroth.
Illidan: “Few understood my use of the naga to obtain the Eye of Sargeras, but it was a necessary tactic to secure the future of Azeroth. Let nothing stop you from doing what needs to be done!”

Harjatan
Down we go into the underground, flooded caverns where the naga make an appearance in search of the pillar that we took away.
Mistress Sassz’ine: “These fools bring the Tidestone to us! Just as our blessed queen foresaw!”
“Slay the intruders! Take back what is ours!”
This sadly blows my speculation on the Old Gods and the naga wanting us to put these 5 keys in their place since apparently they’re not too happy with us holding on to the tidestone and they want it back for the glory of Azshara.
“Harjatan! Pummel their bones to dust!”
“Time to smash!”
“Quiet your mindless oaf! Kill them!”
This naga brute was trained from birth to demolish his enemies. Through a conquest of savage brutality, he gathered many, many cave dwelling murlocs who see him as a god. With a mere barked command, hordes of devour followers follow his lead and join him in this battle. He says the line:
“Bal, lamer zhita!”
Which I was curious about, like what does it mean, but apparently it’s never been translated yet it’s something also said by High Warlord Naj’entus in the black temple so maybe it’s just a random battlecry? Either way we deal with his murloc followers, we avoid the puddles on the floor and if you want, you could use the Mrgrglhjorn during the fight to summon Elder- Murk Eye and defeat him for an achievement. Murky, Old Murk-Eye, Elder Murk Eye, it’s becoming quite a line up.

Mistress Sassz'ine
We move from Harjatan’s lair to the abyssal throne with more murlocs, tidescale naga eels and jellyfish in our way and the jellyfish do some really annoying stuns until we find the chamber where Mistress Sassz’ine is waiting.
“The tidestone will be ours!”
She has spent a lifetime binding the denizens of the ocean to her dark will. With this power she is Aquawoman as she summons a freaking massive fish across the battlefield, a fish you do not want to be hit by and she has a whale that pops up on the side of the battlefield, trying to suck us in, but we can use the befouling ink spit out by Ossunet to make the whale go away. She was handpicked to watch over these flooded passageways and retrieve the tidestone, perhaps Azshara herself would have been a better choice since the mistress is no match for us.
Death: “Such a death...is beneath me...”
“From this stone flowed rivers and seas, the very lifeblood of Azeroth. Today it washes clean the darkness that scars our world.”
The Tidestone of Golganeth is in its place and we move back to the abyssal approach, up we go on the sunken stair. Here we encounter the quest we had this week, and I checked out what other quests might be available. From what I could find we also have Ryul the Fading which is apparently a skeleton kind of creature and far more interesting, Naisha, the night elf that was with Maiev when Illidan decided to bring the tomb down on their heads. Of course we haven’t seen these quests live yet so it’s not 100% certain that they’ll actually be there, but I’m very curious how that dialogue will go, if there will be any interaction between Maiev, Illidan and Naisha.

Sisters of the Moon
Further up into the forgotten approach and we end up at the terrace of the moon where Illidan does seem to remember what happened during Warcraft 3.
“An age has passed since I last walked these halls. I did what needed to be done, though at great cost. Be on your guard. I doubt the spirits trapped here will be friendly...or forgiving.”
Or is he talking about something else since on the one hand we know what he did to Maiev’s troops but to say that that was ages ago seems a bit much not to mention that these spirits here, they seem to be more of a reflection of the time where the Tomb of Sargeras was still used as a place of worship. It’s a part of the tomb that’s untouched by outside influences, like an echo of the past, yet at the same time we also have Gul’dan’s spirit dying here so it almost seems to be a bit conflicting with each other. I personally think Illidan means working with the enemy, fighting against the Legion, doing what had to be done which lead to the sundering and this area beneath the waves. We must be careful, not just because of the hostile spirits, we also have the traps placed by guardian Aegwynn, traps that were also mentioned in the tomb audio drama which if you haven’t listened to it yet, go do it as soon as possible since it’s brilliant. Activating the traps spawns a guardian sentry which has really annoying aoe polymorph bombs. We clear the way being very careful of our steps until we encounter the sisters of the moon.
Huntress Kasparian: “I claim first blood, sisters!”
Priestess Lunaspyre: “Goddess guide your hand!”
Captain Yathae Moonstrike: “You are ever impetuous, Kasparian.”
These wardens guarded the temple long before the avatar of Sargeras was even brought here. In death, they maintained their vigil, but over the millennia something twisting their ability to distinguish friend from foe. Their madness slowly consumed them, and now any who dare enter their sacred chamber are put to death. At one point Naisha was part of this encounter, but was replaced with Huntress Kasparian which makes sense if they want to go with defending the temple before Sargeras even got here. This encounter looks really cool as the floor is constantly changing to reflect the moon cycle and you have to move between light and dark to change the stacks on yourself. The elves themselves are bound together and share their health and only have enough power to give one of them a physical form at a time. We first fight with the huntress followed by the captain and ending with the priestess.
Death: Priestess Lunaspyre: “we failed...the goddess...”
Yathae: “No...I ... should have...won...”
Kasparian: “Elune...forgive us...”

Although the fight consists of three bosses which share a health pool, you will only ever fight one boss at a time, as whilst one boss is attack-able the others are in a ghostly form which prevents players from interacting with them.

The Desolate Host
Next our journey takes us through the wailing halls where tormented priestesses and spectral guardians, ghostly acolytes and eternal soulguards stand in our way. They sometimes pull you into the spirit realm where orbs of light can be picked up which increases our damage done. The statue looks freaking awesome with the cracked face on it and from the wailing halls we move into the befouled sanctum where we find the engine of souls and a familiar night elf.
“We will reap your souls!”
“Your souls will know despair!”
This was one a sacred burial site for the Night Elves, but with the coming of the Legion they have twisted it with the Engine of Souls. This foul machine draws upon the energy of dead, twisting them into abominations. This fight takes place in the corporeal realm and the spirit realm where the corrupted soul of High Priestess Dejahna is in charge. Those that have read the War of the Ancients, you might remember her one who got killed by the Legion, she passed on leadership of the sisterhood of Elune and made Tyrande Whisperwind the High Priestess. Somehow her spirit ended up here and with enough time passed, the host opens up and the Desolate Host comes out who’s ready to feed upon our suffering. Both realms can see and fight with the host and together we bring it down.
Death: “The engine...falters...”
“These tears of perfect beauty embody the dream of what our world could be. Today they purify your hearts for the battle to come.”
“The pillars of creation are in place. Return to the Cathedral and I will reveal the ancient secret this temple holds.”
“The elves built this temple upon the city of an ancient power, a vault I believed would safeguard the husk of my fallen foe. But with his disciple’s aid, the Dark Titan threatens to return to this world stronger than before!”
“We will put a stop to Kil’jaeden’s plan, Aegwynn. This time we will not fail.”
“Bold words, Khadgar, but victory requires more than courage alone. The armies of your Alliance and Horde had courage...before facing slaughter on the Broken Shore. The deceiver will turn your fears and doubts against you.”
“Kil’jaeden hounded my people across the starts, but we are done running. He will pay for his atrocities against our world...and my son.”
“You’re right, Illidan. Kil’jaeden and the Legion have defeated each of us in the past. But if we stand together, Azeroth can yet be saved. I know it!”

Maiden of Vigilance
We know this place as the Tomb of Sargeras, before that the Temple of Elune, but before that there was something else here. Not much is known about this city of ancient power, the only line I could find was a small description in the World of Warcraft Chronicle which said: "Which some legends say was built upon an even older structure of mysterious origins."
Very mysterious indeed, but from the architecture we’ll see in a moment, we can be pretty sure that it has some titan influences in it. Perhaps this too was once a titan facility taken over by the night elves, who knows. We make our way down and get a little taste of what’s to come. Holy and fel orbs floating aboat and we can only touch one of them as we go down the stairs, clear the guardian’s sanctum, Aegwynn’s old hang out, from eonic defenders and the fel sha until we’re ready to face my personal favorite fight, the Maiden of Vigilance.
“You will not disturb the master’s work!”
“I did not choose my fate, neither will you!”
She was charged by Aegwynn to defend the tomb and has stood watch for hundreds of years. The guardian did not foresee what effects the avatar’s seeping fel energy would have on this titan construct as it was slowly warped by this maleficence. It now seeks to destroy any in her path as she casts infusion on the entire raid which infuses with either holy or fel energy, the two forces fighting within the maiden. Very similar to Thaddius back in Naxxramas, all you need to do is move to the group your infused with, fel with fel, holy by holy and you don’t even have to worry about what direction you switch sides with since there is a period of immunity. All the same, it was a bit challenging to coordinate the fight, especially when you have priests who think it’s funny to pull back bombers as they try to do the right thing. When you stand next to someone who does not share your infusion or when the maiden simply detonates you, you’re supposed to run to the hole in the floor and jump down, preventing your explosion from blowing up the raid and you even get a nice boost back up on the platform. Every so often the maiden teleports away and you get to enjoy a little mini game of catching the rights orbs. Picking up the ones that line up with your infusion will power you up while the opposite ones will detonate ya. Do enough damage to break her shield, interupt her spell and repeat...I loved this fight to bits, especially since it has such a high level of individual responsibility.
Death: “My vigil ends! Let not...the dark one...awaken...”

Fallen Avatar
We can now take one of the prettiest elevator rides down as to the sides you can see lava worms, the bones of an ancient old dragon, fel seeping off the walls until the light touches us and we end up in the Chamber of the Avatar.
Kil’jaeden: “Damnable mortals! You scurry through this tomb like vermin, dispatching my underlings and imaging yourselves the equals of the Legion. Heroes...champions...fools! The husk before you was once a vessel for the might of Sargeras. But this temple itself is our prize. The means by which we will reduce your world to cinders! Still...I will not deprive you of this chance to fall before an ancient wonder. Let this avatar be the end of you!”
Kil’jaeden doesn’t seem to put a lot of weight into the avatar of Sargeras and instead sees the temple as the prize, by which I think he means that portal they got going on, the might of the legion that’s pouring through, that’s what will be the end of us but still...The deceiver is a good sport and lets us tango with the avatar of Sargeras.
“Mortals...die!”
This is what the guardian Aegwynn once had to face by herself and I had a lot of expectations for this encounter, but then I think I put the expectations a bit high since the spirit of Sargeras is not in there. It’s the husk that once contained the power, still incredibly powerful, but not the thing that Aegwynn faced. It’s a bit of a dummy announcing all the attacks that it does while another Maiden, this time a Corrupted Maiden of Valor is also with him in the room. We use her to prevent the avatar from gaining more energy from the containment while also making sure to kill her before his energy is full since at that time he’ll absorb what ever is left of her lifeblood and add it to his own. With the energy bar full, the avatar is ready to kick the fight into overdrive, shattering the floor beneath and taking us down below.
“Deceiver! We have to end your invasion of Azeroth. Your masters crusade dies here!”
“Is there no end to your sanctimonious bluster, Velen? You claim the mantle of prophet, yet you always lacked the vision to see the inevitable destiny of our world...of all worlds.”
“FLAAAAAAMEEEESSSS”
Illidan, Velen and Khadgar...Maiev is somewhere else I assume, they take on Kil’jaeden while we deal with the Avatar who slowly but surely destroys the very ground that we walk on, pushing us closer to a dip in the fell. That’s not too healthy for ya so we take the avatar down before we’re out of room, joining our troops in confronting Kil’jaeden.
“It...ends...”
“Still you fight us! Still you deny the inevitable! Your incessant resistance is maddening! Why will you not yield?”
“Have your countless defeats taught you nothing, Deceiver?”
“The vision Sargeras showed you was a lie, Kil’jaeden. Surrender! Let it end!”
“Never! Our crusade will never yield! Savor your shallow victory. We will return again and again, however long it takes, until at last we break you!”
“The portal is closing! We can seal the Legion’s gateway and end this invasion.”
“No! No more running. No more hiding. I must finish this!”
“Velen, stop!”
‘Sealing the portal buys us nothing, archmage. Whether it takes a few years or millennia, the Legion will return, Over and over again, until too few of us remain to fight them. It is time to seize our fate. We must use the portal and follow the Deceiver into the abyss. It is the only way!”
”I agree. It is the only way. Go, champions! We have precious little time to save Velen and return before the portal closes.”
‘Come. If we are to die in the Nether, we will take the Deceiver with us!”

Kil'jaeden
I was told that there was some massive RP after the portal so I quickly jumped in, but imagine Kil’jaeden going through the gateway, Velen quickly going after him while Illidan easily convinced Khadgar and they follow as well. I was checking the recordings to see if we used the final pillar of creation, the eye of Aman’thul anywhere, but I couldn’t see it actively used. I asked around on twitter and some of you suggested that the eye was used to power the laser beam that opened the tomb to begin with, but I couldn’t find any source to back it up. The lost codex was able to find a screenshot of the portal area in the fallen avatar’s room which looks a lot like the eye was supposed to be used here as like a bath stopper, just plunge it in there and stop the portal, but then we have khadgar who says we have little time before the portal closes on its own.
I don’t know, maybe one of you knows where the eye went. Either way we’re here on Kil’jaeden’s battle cruiser shooting through the twisting nether. On the ship we have fleetlord dominators, eredar bloodmages and even felborn and shadow council warlocks that make for the final troops that stand in our way. Meanwhile Kil’ jaeden and Velen are having a little harry potter moment as they try to work out the problems in their relationship.
“You hunter your own people, chasing us across the stars. Never again!”
“It was you who lacked vision! Who refused to see the truth of the Legion’s inevitable victory!”
“You lost faith in the Light. Together, we could have resisted Sargeras and saved our world!”
“Did the Light save your son? Was it faith that shone in Rakeesh’s eyes as they closed for the final time? Or was it hatred for the father who abandoned him?”
‘GRAAAAAHHHHH’
“Muhahaha and now your impotent fury has drawn your allies to their doom. Watch as my infinite army slaughters them all!’
“No! You will not divide us, Deceiver. I will fight by their side, and they by mine. Together, we will end your crusade!”
Kil’jaeden has always believed that standing up against Sargeras, the Legion itself, that it was simply impossible yet Velen had more faith. When Kil’jaeden and Archimonde accepted the dark bargain, he took his people away from their home world and have been running ever since. Many schemes and plots were implemented by Kil’jaeden as he followed the orders of his master Sargeras. Many worlds were conquered by the Legion, the formation of the Horde was by their design as well as the invasion of Azeroth. They’re responsible for the creation of the Lich King, influenced Illidan’s path, turned Kael’thas Dunstrider to their side as they tried to invade through the sunwell. Countless lives were lost to the deceiver, among them Velens own son turned against his father. Now the time has come to show Kil’jaeden that united we can stand against him. A nice touch is that the Maw of the Damned, the blood dk artifact whos creator was so obsessed with Kil’jaeden, will actually react to being in his presence.
“What is this? Even when your own doubts and fears are made manifest, you will not yield? Fall into darkness”
“Find me champions, and I will grant you sight!”
As darkness falls, Illidan guides the way and allows us to see our enemy and conquer it, forcing Kil’jaeden to fight us in the open once more.
“Somehow you survived! No matter. Look upon our wonders, you mortals, and despair! Behold the world that shall be your tomb!”
“Argus! My beloved homeworld...what have they done to you?”
The vessel has arrived at Argus, stronghold of the Burning Legion and you can actually see the planet in the background which looks freaking awesome.
“Limitless destruction is at my command”
That might be so, but the heroes are able to overcome the deceiver and put an end to his torment. Now at this point I don’t believe anyone has cleared mythic yet so we don’t know if there’s anything special that happens on that difficulty. Some mentioned that they were disappointed with Kil’jaeden’s size, but for the fight as we’ve seen it so far I think it’s adequate, but perhaps he’ll have something similar like Archimonde and pull us into a whole new phase...who knows, from the cinematic it seems like he has massive wounds on his head, but that’s could also just be from the 20 people hitting him over and over again.

Ahh we made the escape to azsuna
“pfoeh, is everyone alright?”
Ow no illidan, what have you done?!
“What have you done?”
“Sometimes the hand of fate... must be forced.”
And there we go, the end of the Tomb of Sargeras with Illidan opening up the rift in the sky and the threat of Argus is looming above us. Velen always knew that he would see Argus again since it appeared time and again in his visions, but he never imagined this. There can be no doubt that the fates of our worlds are intertwined. Can Argus be saved, or must it be sacrificed to stop Sargeras?
Khadgar knows that the Legion army is ready to strike, while Turalyone and hopefully Alleria are still out there somewhere as well. If he can find his old friends, perhaps the Army of the Light can help us end this war.
Illidan is ready to go to Argus, the Throne of the Burning Legion where its infernal machines provide Sargeras with an infinite army. We must take the fight to Argus and bring the Legion to its knees.
Sadly Maiev's part was kind of cut out off the tomb as she didn’t play a part in the finale, but she used to have dialogue on the PTR:
"One of the Legion's masters has fallen at last, yet this war is far from over. Was this the true plan of Sargeras all along? His ultimate endgame? Or perhaps this is another's doing. Someone who has betrayed this world before. <Maiev narrows her eyes as she looks toward the sky.> I will be watching... and ready."
I’ve talked a bit more about the end cinematic in an individual video and now of course the question is...where do we go from here? Argus, of course, but we don’t really know what’s going to go down on that planet. It’s in teleporting distance so the way of getting there is a lot easier and I’m hoping to see a lot of Eredar/Draenei architecture which, inevitably and unfortunately, will have a lot of green and fel influences.
The question of who will be the end boss is still unanswered which I really like, I like that they’re keeping it in the dark, yet at the same time... there aren’t that many big names left for the Legion to throw at us. Kil’jaeden was near the top of the hierarchy so where do you go from there?
This is all speculation of course, but I felt like Khadgar was a bit dodgy at times, yet his reaction during the cinematic as to what Illidan just did...I don’t think he’s an agent of the Legion.
Velen was able to resist giving in to the hatred, he did show fury against Kil’jaeden, but that touch in the cinematic, he didn’t become consumed by it. Some suggested that he gave Kil’jaeden a vision of the future which is possible but to me it looked more like him being the bigger man. Despite the millennia of torment, being able to touch his former co-leader, once closer than a brother and be like...it’s oke...you go explode now, go with the Light. Some also asked if Velen gave him the death touch and is Kil’jaeden truly dead now. I don’t think Velen put him out of his suffering, the explosion was already on its way and I didn’t see any light influences. Is he truly dead? It’s hard to give a clear answer to that. They’ve made the rule that they can only truly die in the twisting nether or on a fel infused planet, but the rule is vague and often not followed. I think the story they want to tell is that both Archimonde and Kil’jaeden, despite ones light dying out on Draenor and the other being in orbit of Argus, I think they want them to be dead, that that’s the story.
So no Khadgar, No Velen as end boss, now I’ve also heard Illidan’s name pop up after he opened this rift and pretty much accomplished what Sargeras always wanted to do and I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I am saying that it would be a waste. Why go through all the trouble of bringing Illidan back in a somewhat redemption story only to turn around and be like, lol, he’s the end boss...again. Remember how we said it was bad that you killed him at the top of the black temple? Yeah, now it’s a good thing to kill him, go nuts. Not impossible, just a waste in my opinion.
Which means that if we look at it right now and they’re going to keep the Legion as our enemy, only one name really holds up and that’s Sargeras. I still very much dislike the idea of taking on the guy that was responsible for wiping out the Pantheon, that can cleave planets in two, but who knows what the future is going to bring. I’m very curious to see how the Army of Light story line is going to play out, if the titan spirit inside of Azeroth might have a role to play and how about them Old Gods. Have we turned the 5 keys to light their path? Was Khadgar the lord of ravens? At the hour of her third death she usher in their coming and 3 lies will the boy king offer us...Still plenty on the horizon, but I also really hope that they’re going to spend more time on building up new characters and story lines since now that Kil’jaeden is gone...there really isn’t that much left but hey that might be a good topic for a different video.
