interviewed Game Director Ion Hazzikostas about Dragonflight! We've shared our highlights below, but make sure to check out the full video.
Ion would like to assure us that, despite the 2022 release date, the expansion is not being rushed. Dragonflight was in development before Shadowlands was released. The alpha and beta cycle is expected to be shorter with the different, more focused approach.
Forbidden Reach - the Dracthyr starting experience - is due to be tested next week.
Dragon riding is an expansion feature, but they would love to explore carrying it forward and using it to make flying better. Mount collections and certain animations not being available for every mount is a concern, but player reaction will ultimately determine if dragon riding becomes a permanent feature in the game.
Dragon riding upgrades focus on mastery over the skill and the player strengthening their bond with the dragon.
The larger zones of Dragonflight are partly designed around dragon riding - the usual system of players on the ground for months before they can fly didn't feel right for a dragon-related expansion. They're also designed to bring back a sense of exploration of a world lived in - trying to move away from certain previous zones where it felt like everything in them existed strictly for gameplay purposes.
No allied races currently planned for Dragonflight, but they are still open to using the system when it makes sense in the future. For now the focus is on the Dracthyr.
Profession updates are focussed on primary professions for now. They would like to revisit secondary professions in the future.
Archeology may be updated in later patches in Dragonflight, and they're hoping to find a new framework for the profession going forward.
Talent tree specializations are more elaborate than they've been before, but in time you should be able to eventually specialize in everything. It's not a binary choice so much as working out which specialization you want to invest in early.
They do not want professions to be RNG driven. While there are some elements of luck, ultimately there are more deterministic ways to ensure you get what you want.
They continue to want mounts to be obtainable through a variety of different activities.
They've definitely heard the feedback that the Siege of Orgrimmar could use a skip, and might be looking into adding one.
Talent trees partly inspired by seeing how Classic talent trees playing out in the modern ear.
Two reasons behind seperating the trees - first that spec is now a major part of class identity and they didn't want to lose that, and also because they don't want players to feel like they have to choose between utility and power, especially as that means most players would just feel like they have to choose power.
They are looking into smaller, more frequent patches in Dragonflight.
Occasional holiday updates likely to continue in minor patches.
