Back in the alpha, we reported on a side quest in the Waking Shores that explores the Dragonmaw Clan's troubled legacy, as we spend time with an old Orc who regrets the part he played in crimes against the Red Dragonflight. Here's how to experience the conclusion of that story.
The Story So Far
This questline is broken into three parts, with each new part becoming available after a weekly reset. We spoke about the first two in our previous article, where we
meet Duroz Scaletaker and his young companion, Kolgar Flameguard
. Duroz is from the Dragonmaw Clan, a clan that enslaved Alexstrasza and forced her to breed, creating red dragon mounts for use during the Second War.
To recap: the guilt of these crimes weighed heavily on Duroz's mind, and he seemed astonished by the way the red dragons were treating him now. As protectors of Life, they seemed more concerned with his health than his history.
Duroz Scaletaker says: They're beautiful, aren't they?
Kolgar Flameguard says: The dragons?
Duroz Scaletaker says: The dragons. The whelps. Everything else here. To think of what we did to them at Grim Batol...
Duroz Scaletaker says: I broke whelps younger than these, Kolgar. Some honor can't be regained.
The ruby whelpling lands near Duroz's lap, curls up, and begins to drift off into sleep.
Kolgar Flameguard says: Maybe it can.
In the second week, we return to find Duroz has passed away, and our attention turns to Kolgar Flameguard, who does not seem to know how to cope without his old companion. However, a red Drakonid named Bathoras infuses a gem with Duroz's spirit, telling you it's Kolgar's time to heal.
Kolgar Flameguard says: He would not have believed he deserved this kindness from the dragons.
Batharos says: One cannot deserve dignity. It is the right of all life.
Kolgar Flameguard says: I will not forget this, Bathoras.
Conclusion
The conclusion to this storyline is the
Vazio
, which can be found once again within the inn underneath the Ruby Lifeshrine, a sleeping ruby whelpling curled up next to him. Kolgar could use someone to talk to, and offers to buy the player a drink.
Vakaron says: Here are your drinks.
Vakaron says: There's much more to see here than just the inside of this inn. Make sure he knows that.
Once we've chosen our drink, (and we like the fact that non-alcoholic options are available) we help Kolgar out as he talks about his friend.
Kolgar nods to you when you set the tankard down in front of him.
Kolgar Flameguard says: You know, Duroz didn't want me to come. He was afraid he'd be holding me here. Captive.--Sorry, can you grab my pack over there?
Kolgar Flameguard says: Dying here wasn't peace for him. He knew what he was doing. Always knew how to hurt himself worse than anyone else could.
Kolgar rummages in the pack, pulls out a cloak, and puts it on while speaking.
Kolgar Flameguard says: I started to wonder if I should have felt the same. The Blackrock clan added our share of bones to the Path of Glory. What was the difference?--My axe is over there, too, if you could.
Kolgar Flameguard says: The day he died was the first day he touched this whelp. I've seen an orc stare down a hundred vindicators with less fear than that. Like he was afraid the stain inside of him would spill out.
Kolgar slowly holsters the axe on his back, looking down at the sleeping whelp.
Kolgar Flameguard says: They 'd say he died a coward but I don't know cowards who could do that. Maybe he did hold me captive in the end. I don't thinkI can go back anymore.
Kolgar Flameguard says: One last drink, shall we?
Kolgar Flameguard says: Thank you, <name>. You didn't have to help, but you did. So did the dragons. Now, I... just want to take my friend on a very long walk.
Afterwards, Kolgar finally seems ready to leave, no doubt to take the gem containing Duroz's spirit for that walk. The red whelpling chooses to go with him, and we really see Duroz's true legacy in this moment.
The red whelpling nudges Kolgar's arm and looks pleadingly up at him.
Kolgar sighs.
Kolgar Flameguard says: Come on, then. I can't stop you.
Where once, Orcs might have been associated with red dragons as a result of the cruelty of the Dragonmaw, now, they have a chance to build relationships with dragons built on kindness and friendship. Kolgar's red dragon whelpling is no slave, but a dragon that chooses to spend time with an orc. We hope we'll see them both again some day.
Completing this quest is one of the requirements for the
Todos os lados da história
achievement, with the others focussing on the red dragon
Veritistrasz
, the cross-faction friends
Captain Garrick and Warlord Breka Grimaxe
, and the Djaradin
Tarjin the Blind
.
