Blizzard is implementing the first iteration of cross-faction content in the form of cross-faction instances. However, as this is the first iteration of a cross-faction system, some limitations are in effect, such as the inability to create cross-faction guilds, as they want this first step of the feature to be as much of an opt-in as possible.
Guilds will remain single-faction, and random matchmade activities like Heroic dungeons, Skirmishes, or Random Battlegrounds will all remain same-faction (both because there is less faction-driven pressure around random groups, and to avoid compromising the opt-in nature of the feature by randomly placing a queuing orc in a group with a night elf).
However, youtuber and streamer
MrGM
has found a glitch that allows for the creation of cross-faction guilds on the 9.2.5 PTR! As this glitch requires creation of a new guild to work, it cannot be applied to currently existing guilds.
How the glitch works:
Enter a cross-faction instance with one Horde character and one Alliance character (MrGM used Torghast for this). One of the characters must have a
Contrato de Guilda
with them.
Have the character of the opposite faction sign the guild charter.
Once the guild charter is signed by 5 characters and the new guild is created, the cross-faction character will join the guild normally, and can invite members of their specific faction (if given guild invite powers).
It is unfortunate that this glitch will likely be fixed before Patch 9.2.5 (
which has just entered its Release Candidate state with this week's build
), although from this glitch it does seem like the tech is already there in some capacity.
In a recent
Patch 9.2.5 interview with GamesBeat
, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas mentioned that they are treading carefully with what they make cross-factionable or not with the inclusion of guilds, as once that possibility comes to fruition, it can never be reversed.

There’s certainly a possibility. We know better than to close the door definitively on almost anything. But we want to be guided by feedback.
If we loosen restrictions and allow the formation of social bonds, there’s no way we can ever roll that back. We can’t tell a group that’s been playing together for some number of months, sorry, we decided this was a mistake, you can’t do that anymore.
