Got this today from lady deathwhisper.
After short testing:
- Valkyr lasts 30 seconds as stated.
- Kind of low Proc rate (2%), but does not have an internal cooldown.
- Valkyr chain casts Smite (hit-capped) that hits around 1591-1785 damage and crits around 2386-2677 with a very low (5%ish) crit rate (non-boss dummy testing, zero debuffs). Rawr estimates around 27000 damage per proc.
- Cast time is very fast, somewhere between 1 and 1.5 sec.
- Spawns with 12,600 health, and heal themselves for 25% of damage dealt.
- Do not scale with stats.
The proc looks awesome!
For detailed info on the proc refer to iketh's comment further down.
Edit: updated to recent hotfixes.
-A Nibelung was a name given to a follower of Siegfried ( A legendary Dragon Slayer).
-With the strong connotations in Norse Mythology its very fitting a Val'kyr be summoned by this lore laden weapon! : D
As stated above there is a low proc rate. I want to say around 2-5%. But having no ICD is nice. Cast time is around 1.3s. My val'kyr personally hits raid trash from 950-1300 with procs maxing at 1.9k. Max val'kyrs up at once for me personally is 3. Awesome to do random heroics and have people go "Ooh and Aah". As for dps upgrades for people it's not really one. More for looks imo.
in 25raid val'kyr have 400-500 dps and hit 1154-1327
Proc chance: 1%
(as stated on the
Tested on level 83 dummy, scorch spamming.
700 scorches, I had 9 Val'kyr's spawn.
There is definitely no internal cd, as I had 3 up at the same time at 1 point.
They are up for 30 seconds, and will smite ~16-17 times during that time for a little over 1k a hit (~500dps each proc).
I did not see a single crit from any of the 9 val'kyrs...
Val'kyrs do not seem to scale with players gear/stats in anyway (spell power/haste/crit etc).
Don't rely on that proc at all, it's mostly just a vanity feature. It's a very rare proc (happens to me not frequently than once in 6-7 minutes), and that Val'kyr mob manages to do just about 13k-15k dmg on dummy before it despawns.
Assuming that, in terms of dps this staff is just a tiny bit better than Enlightenment/Illumination normal version, for an arcane mage at least.
The following information contains both hotfixes this staff has received.
2% proc rate with no internal CD. There is no limit on the number that can be out at one time.
Spawn with 12,600 health and no mana bar.
Heal themselves for 25% of the damage they deal.
Cast smite (holy damage) an average of 16.6 casts per summon or an instant cast every 1.81 seconds. The actual GCD of the val'kyr is probably 1.35 seconds and 0.45-0.5 additional seconds are added from server delay/lag. (It's the same affect that raises a water elemental's cast time from 2.5 up to 2.95-3.0 seconds.)
Deal 1591 - 1785 damage, 5% crit chance, 1.5 crit multiplier, and hit capped.
They do not scale with your stats.
Benefit from curse of elements, but not arcane empowerment, ferocious inspiration, or sanctified retribution.
Benefit from +5% spell crit debuff from imp. scorch, imp. shadowbolt, and winter's chill and all other boss debuffs.
Benefit from the spell haste buffs from wrath of air and imp. moonkin aura/swift retribution.
Val'kyr proc off living bomb dot ticks and those from locks and priests. They do not proc off pyroblast or fireball's dot or ignite or any other dot that are an after-effect of a spell.
Arcane is horrible with this staff because it does not proc off each arcane missile, only at the onset of the channel. It interacts the same way with mind flay.
Proc off each spellcast of arcane explosion, each wave of blizzard, and the detonation of living bomb. It does NOT proc off each target hit.
Do not proc off waterbolt or mirror image spells.
Proc off molten armor.
Val'kyr target the mob that caused the proc (not based on your aggro). If the target dies, they will wait and attack the next target you deal damage to, whether directly or indirectly. Thus, they will never randomly target mobs and break CC. If a Val'kyr appeared to break a CC, look to the master of the Val'kyr instead.
Visually, they're an exact mini-replica of the white Val'kyr of the Twin Val'kyr encounter in ToC. Blizzard could have added an additional rarity to each staff by making half spawn only white and half spawn only black Val'kyr. Oh well...
To get the most from the Val'kyr, stand between 10 and 30 yards. If outside that range, the Val'kyr will fly around a bit until in minimum/maximum range and eat away at the 30 seconds it's summoned. It's worth noting for pvp that once the Val'kyr is in minimum range, it won't need to readjust if the target moves closer than 10 yards until a new target is acquired.
Val'kyr obey the commands you give to your pets.
For a reason unknown (and it might very well be unintentional), talenting for fingers of frost and imp. blizzard is triggering this staff at an exceptional rate. If you're a mage, you will get a kick out of running with this staff at least once as frost for AoE jobs in raids because of the huge number of Val'kyr that will spawn, and you'll also be able to control them with your pet. Your raid will enjoy them as well.

I got this last night and its awesome, being a shadow priest, i cant tell if it works off damage dealt or actual casts.
but ive had 2 up at the same time which is quite neat :P although that was in the instance if that makes any differnce.
not had 2 up around the dummys yet :( to me it just seems very random.. i think i did a whole heroic without it proccing once.
Given the 30 second duration per summoned Val'kyr, anecdotal 500 DPS for that time and a 1% proc chance, assuming ~2 second cast times for your main nuke: average of 200 seconds of casting per proc, 30 seconds of uptime per proc: 30/200=0.15 - the proc will be up ~15% of the time, giving you 75 dps from the val'kyr on a Patchwerk fight. Increase or decrease this as per your haste, and of course uptime will be lower if you're moving without having instant casts.
I started channeling a rain of fire a couple of seconds before a wave of ghouls got to me in the Halls of Reflection, had no other spells up at all, and got a val'kyr proc after a couple of ticks of RoF. Not checked whether it can proc from dot ticks, but from this it appears it will proc from channeled AOE ticks, in which case fights with many adds will have a much better uptime.
When this dropped for my guild, nobody really wanted this simply because we didn't know how good the Val'kyr was. It ended up in my hands for testing, after being rejected by a druid who deemed the proc rate to be too low (and indeed, it is - 1%).
After reading a bit (special thanks to Iketh) and doing some testing of my own, I could observe the following:
Val'kyr created from this proc will hit for around 1100 damage every 1,4 seconds. They are considered Guardians.
This has no internal cooldown (ICD). I've managed to summon as many as 5 Val'kyr at the same time.
This will proc off DoT-like skills. In my case (a mage), this procs off Living Bomb (every tick and the final boom) and also Blizzard (every wave).
This will proc off pinpoint damage skills, of course. Spells like Fire Blast, Frostbolt, Arcane Blast, do proc it. It does not, however, proc off the DoT part of pinpoint skills, like Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, or Pyroblast (it procs off the initial hit, but not the DoT). Flamestrike falls in this last category. I haven't tested its interaction with Arcane Missiles (whether it procs off all missiles or only the first one).
This will not proc off Ignite.
The chance to proc increases with the number of targets damaged. Hitting more targets with Blizzard/Flamestrike/Living Bomb boom increases chance to proc.
With that said, this staff looks good only situationally. In most cases, it's a subpar weapon. The low proc will not compensate its usage.
However, I tried using it on 25 H Anub'arak and it played out very well; on this specific fight, there's a constant stream of adds that will receive Living Bomb (Nerubian Burrowers and Swarm Scarabs) and much of the DPS done by a frostfire mage on this fight will also come from Blizzard hitting 5 targets simultaneously (the 4 Nerubian Burrowers and Anub'arak). Depending on their position, Swarm Scarabs may be targets for Blizzard too.
All of this greatly increases the chance Nibelung will proc during the fight, and made the staff actually worthwhile, to the point where the Val'kyr were responsible for approximately 5% of my damage. It should be noted they are not damaged by Anub'arak's Leeching Swarm. (Incidentally, today was our guild's first kill of 25 H Anub'arak, at long last! =D).
Lastly, as stated before, this staff looks best for classes that use lots of DoT spells; and also looks interesting for PvP. I'd like to see an Affliction Lock with this.
I upgraded to this staff from
A fairly lack luster upgrade, if you can even call it an upgrade. Not much of a dps increase if any at all. It's been said for a long time that one-hand + off-hand is superior to staffs for a long time. That is especially true in this case given that the staff doesn't give any additional benefits such as haste or crit.
Tested it with both destro and affliction specs. It procs more often with affliction. I don't have any hard numbers however.
BUT, on a more positive note: this staff looks awesome with the +81 SP enchant!
Nice sounding proc.
But is fighting all she can do
The question is: does this valkyr sing?
They do respond to pet attack commands like follow and attack. As a warlock its nice they follow whatever my felhunter is after.
So, I had this thing proc 3 times in less than 10 sec while AOE farming. Threw up a screen shot. Pretty sweet. Seems each hit from Blizzard has a chance to proc it.
Cast Blizzard on the whelps in the Onyxia fight and it procced about 10 times all at once. I thought it was cool, but the raid got a little confused as most of them hadn't seen it before and didn't know what it was.
Here's a link for a full ICC first wing clear. (and Anub 25, weekly boss)
I had the staff equiped and was dpsing the entire time. (Except I manned a cannon on Gunship, which might screw the numbers. Seems doubtful though).
As you can see, I did 22.4 m dps, and the Valkyr Guardians did 811 k. (Almost exactly the same as Treants, coincidentally)
811,000/22,400,000 = 0.036, or approximately 3.6% of my damage for the entire night.
As another comparison, this is slightly more than pillar of flame did (3.0%).
If you looks at my uptime (69.8%) and their uptime (20.2%), and my dps (6,352) and their dps (792):
20.2/69.8 = 28.9% uptime
792*0.289 = 228 dps
Filtering only bosses, or only kills, did not give statistically significant differing results. (Just in case they proced more on aoe trash or anything)
220 / 6300 = 3.5% of my dps.
Here is the damage done to them. If you see the deaths tab, WoL does not think they died. Remember, this is on fights with some heavy AoE, Marrowgar's Whirlwind, Deathwhisper's Death and Decay
Overall, compared to Heroic Illumination, my previous staff, I gain the Valkyr's, and 120 spellpower. I lose 122 Crit (2.66%)
117 Haste (3.57%) and 1 socket.
I don't currently have the math to see if that crit and haste would give a 3.5% buff to my dps, but in my opinion, the difference is small enough that it will matter to only the most hardcore, and I plan on using this for a long time.
Also, they look totally awesome.
The val'kyr can fly, and will attack while in mid-air. We had one go after Razorscale, she flew up and did approx 9k damage to Razor before the first ground phase. Probably pulled aggro off a fire, I'd assume.
I got this staff on my mage a couple of days ago. The proc does NOT make up for the lack of stats. 1% chance to proc is way too random to be worth it; I've gone entire heroics without it proccing once. That's just absurd.
HD video of the proc -
I have been using this for about a week as a boomkin.
From what i have noticed its really nice when i use starfall and on trash with it ive had 4 proc.
I like the little dps boost since this staff has alot of spell power with the gear we can get atm it makes up for the lack of spirit which is one of the stats usually on items like this. The haste/crit i also loose doesnt affect me seeing that i already have over haste cap by about a hundered eventhough i would like the crit i would still use this over lower staff with crit just to keep the additional spell power.
From what I see in lady deathwhisper i hade 3 valk's up at the same time and usually could keep them up most of the fight when i got lucky.
So if you dont need the additional stats from a weapon since you already have good enough gear this is nice to have and i hope they might increase the proc rate a little later or make it so they dont die to fire like i have had in 25 togc.
Thats just my 2cents
-Vengfulvali of Firetree
here are the numbers for Arcane Mage:
valkyre: 140964 (1.08%)
valkyre: 114433 (0.86%)
valkyre: 185960 (1.36%)
which is 1.1% average
Played with a Boomkin who had this.
It procced so much he had up to 3 Val'Kyrs at one time.
This is a very impressive item
This procs like crazy when you do Starfall on a balance druid. So far, since I'm haste capped, the lack of stats doesn't seem to be an issue, and I'm really having my share of dps, and I have a feeling the proc rate was increased since 1 week.
Discovered today the pets that this spawns will kill the orbs in togc anub fight, making the fight practically impossible if you have this equipped.
This cannot proc off dot ticks, only the initial cast of the spell. I did a test where I cast nothing but curse of agony without letting any damage tick. Doing this, multiple val'kyr spawned. I then did multiple tests where I let the dots tick out. After nearly 1000 ticks, the only val'kyr procs came from the initial cast. In the case of 1000 ticks, the probability of getting no procs is about .004%, which is small enough to safely conclude that dot ticks have no effect.
Each Val'kyr put's out 15,000+ damage minimum (if no resists, hardly resists ime). As arcane cookie cutter without dots i normally get 1 every minute, and as many as 3 up at once. This also works just as well in PvP, 15k damage per Val'kyr and most players do not target them as they do not know they put out 15k in 30 seconds. 3+ of these up in 2v2's is very plausible as a dot-caster. I think the point he's trying to make is that this provides a nice SP boost while you're upgrading your other gear. I have a destro lock that has 245 tarasque and 245 benedictus, while my hit is capped and my haste is bove 800. I got some nice hit/haste 264 shoulders, which puts me way above hit and haste caps, and this would therefore be a great choice until i upgrade more gear and reach some sort of equilibrium with my hard/soft caps. Stop saying this is a bad weapon. A best-in-slot for warlocks is hit/haste, but if every one of your pieces has hit/haste you'll be at about double the hit cap and be throwing away hundreds of haste to to diminishing returns. Use. Your. Head.
which spawn a

]Smite seems to be 15% of YOUR mana, the Val'kyr itself doesn't have any manapool.
They ARE affected by raidbuffs and it's targets debuffs.
Targets whatever you shot at that prooced it.
NO Internal Cooldown.
Proc rate seems to be 1%~.
Seems to be the better choice when you hit all your caps.
Can I atleast know WHY I have been rated down?
I'd very much like to know if, for vanity and giggles, anything a Survival Hunter uses would cause this proc.
FOR WARLOCKS: I just spent 15 minutes on a training dummy in destro, casting ONLY immolate and conflagrate to maintain their dots, and not once did this proc off a dot tick, but procced 4 times off initial damage. In affliction spec, on the other hand, it procs very often and does as much damage as my felhunter, despite its downtime. Its DPS ranged from 450-600 in the tests i did.
If you are close to the boss when they spawn, they'll fly back a little ways before casting, so it seems that they have a minimum range like hunters, which seems to be about 10 yards. If i had my back to a corner when she spawned, she would fly around in a confused manner until she found a direction in which she could travel to her minimum range, then start casting her smites.
EDIT: The staff has been hotfixed since this original post! Valkyr can no longer miss, and deal 50% increased damage from before, making them much more powerful!
Tested on a heroic training dummy as an affliction warlock. In a 27-minute battle I had 36 procs....
Damage Done for Heroic Training Dummy 09:58:21-10:25:25
7382228 (4537.9, 85.2%)
738490 (455.4, 8.5%)
Val'kyr Guardian 540837 (614.4, 6.2%)
(Note that the Val'kyr's 614.4 dps seems to only have recorded while damage was being delt by Val'kyr, and show up in recount as a single mob, as opposed to each Val'kyr individually.)
Here are the Val'kyr's attacks:
Hit 492 times - Min 850 - Avg 1061 - Max 1189 - 82.8%
Missed 90 times - 15.2%
Crit 12 times - Min 1275 - Avg 1572 - Max 1770 - 2.0%
Assuming it could proc off Shadowbolt, Haunt and all of my dot ticks, the proc rate is 1.367%.
The most I had up at one time was 4.
At one point I went almost 2 minutes without the number of Val'kyr dropping to zero.
I hope this helps :)
On another note, I tested the proc chance as destruction spec, and in a 15-minute battle of ONLY Immolates and Conflagrates, I had 4 procs total, 0 of which were from dot ticks.
EDIT: After reading Machinassiahs post I went back and only cast dots on the dummy, and over 10 minutes I had 0 procs from dot ticks, and the only procs were from initial casts. I also replicated his test with repeatedly spamming CoA without letting it tick any damage, and it did indeed proc.
The German Nibelungen and the corresponding Old Norse form Niflung (Niflungr) is the name in Germanic and Norse mythology of the royal family or lineage of the Burgundians who settled at Worms. The vast wealth of the Burgundians is often referred to as the Niblung or Niflung hoard. In some German texts Nibelung appears instead as one of the supposed original owners of that hoard, either the name of one of the kings of a people known as the Nibelungs, or in variant form Nybling, as the name of a dwarf. In Richard Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, Nibelung denotes a dwarf, or perhaps a specific race of dwarves.
-Taken from wikipedia, if it was a reference, that's it, not saying it is though, all I could find on the subject.
Got this on recently and spent about 2 hours testing it
- in about 2,000 dot ticks, no procs. Safe to assume it does not proc off of DoTs
-AI is a bit screwy if your too close to target (runs around for about 5-7 seconds positioning)
-Smite is instant cast but Valk will not use it moving
-Valks do about 500-600dps
All in all this is a fun weapon that may even may viable except for the damage is a little low and the first 3 procs I had in raids VoA and ToGC both died within 10 seconds of spawning.
Would be decent for any boss without AoE and for classes that their normal abilities reach the GCD due to proccing of spell cast.
Forgot to add, if you have a pet bar, they do follow pet commands (Follow \ Stay \ Attack)
I just checked on the official world of warcraft forums to see if anybody had posted in the suggestion forum about this weapon's low proc rate and the fragile nature of the summoned val'kyr.
I came across this...
I'd like to urge you to post here if you have experience with this weapon (and play on US servers).
Can any affliction warlocks confirm/deny if dot
proc it? Since an above poster mentions that living bomb crits proc it, but not the ticks, I wonder if the same applies to affliction warlocks dots (corruption and unstable affliction).
I have it on my restoration shaman (who got it free for off-spec because - unsurprisingly - nobody else wanted it) and it's fun in 5 mans with all hte aoe and chain lightning and lightning overload procs, but on bosses it seems to die pretty much instantly. The best death was on beasts where it spawned next to me... inside a fire.
If it does proc on dot crits I may get it on my warlock, otherwise I probably won't bother to.
Wow what an awsome staff
Anyone know, if the staff is good for moonkins?
Does it proc from hurricane?
Does it proc from treants? (probably not but would be cool)
To add some additional results, as a Mage:
- All harmful spells, including Molten Armor reflective procs, can proc it.
- Blizzard with Frostbite and Imp Blizz procs it *extremely* often, my untested suspicion being that the application of Imp Blizz and Frostbite count as spells for the purposes of the proc. On 3 targets, it's very rare not to have at least one up, and on 10 you're frequently accompanied by an army.
(debuff application no longer counts)
- The proc rate is, as others have stated,
2% with no internal cooldown. It procs only off of the initial hits, and not off of dots of spells like Living Bomb or Ignite. It does proc off of blizzard's ticks, as mentioned.
- The Val'kyr spam Smite for a total of roughly 15-17k dmg per proc. They have 12600hp and no AOE-avoidance effects, so on fights with heavy raid damage they can be killed quite quickly.
- The Val'kyr will follow pet commands, if you have a water elemental out. You can order them to move or attack a particular target, which is extremely useful.
- The Val'kyr will attack the target on which the spell that procced them was cast until that target is dead or ordered otherwise. If their first target dies, they'll attack another target.
- They look really, really cool.
- You can have at least five, probably more, up at once. Some comments below claim the maximum is ten, although I can't personally confirm that.
- For a mage's single-target dps, this staff is not great. The proc does not compensate for the lack of passive stats. However, in an AOE situation, particularly if you have Imp Blizzard/Frostbite, it can be quite spectacularly good. Spamming Blizzard on three targets, the valks did 22% of my damage.
Now a tolerable weapon in fights without heavy raid damage.
In light of the above, it's probably best that this go to an Affliction warlock, all else equal. An aff lock has many short-cast spells to proc it, and can control them with pet commands to keep them alive. That said, I doubt the staff is BIS for anyone on a single target, so you can feel free to give it to someone who wants it purely for the RAH RAH VAL'KYR MASCOT factor.
Not seen a post referring to it in PvP yet;
But this pet will smite stealthed targets out of stealth if they are focusing them before the stealth. I.E. - rogue runs out of range and stealths but my Val'kyr will keep attacking that target.
As of today (Jan 6), the Val'kyr received the following buff: "The val’kyrs spawned by the Nibelung staff will now always hit with their smite attack and their damage has been increased." I have confirmed that this is in-effect on my realm. In my testing, the Valks are now hitting for
1500 - 2000 damage
Assuming the crit chance and attack rate from Iketh are correct, we can approximate the damage done by the Valks as:
1750 * (1 + 0.5 * 0.026) = 1773 damage, average per attack (counting crits)
16.6 * 1773 = 29.4k damage on proc
And, using the 1% proc rate, we can calculate the approximate dps of the proc.
(1 / 1.0) * 0.01 * 29.4k =
, when casting every 1.0 sec
(1 / 1.5) * 0.01 * 29.4k =
, when casting every 1.5 sec
(1 / 2.0) * 0.01 * 29.4k =
, when casting every 2.0 sec
These numbers are pretty rough, and only consider single-target situations. As anyone who's seen this staff in action in AoE situations will tell you, this is definitely not the whole picture, but I hope this is helpful to some of you.
(Also, note that while the Valks don't scale with stats, spell power, or crit, one can say that the proc itself scales with haste.)
Switch the "i" and the "U" in Nibelung and you get "Nubeling".
There we go.
This staff has been buffed.
The val’kyrs spawned by the Nibelung staff will now always hit with their smite attack and their damage has been increased for both normal and heroic versions of the staff.
The regular version has changed from 1300-ish casts to 1750ish casts.
Now I could be incorrect, but it seems that now this thing won't die to normal aoe pulse. Somebody else will have to check this out for other mechanics, but during the Festergut fight tonight on 25man my val'kyrs were active for the whole time after they proced instead of dieing immediately to the aoe blight or w/e the mechanic is.
Can somebody confirm/deny after 1/6/10 that this is either immune to or has aoe avoidance?
Edit: it seems like it's still normally vulnerable to aoe. I had it in ahn'kahet today form my random and 2 of them spawned within seconds of each other and died within seconds of each other in the aoe that Jedoga Shadowseeker does (the female orc in shaman gear). It also died pretty quickly during Sapphiron in naxx25 when our guild decided to try for immortal.
As I heard, there are some things that specifically target players and not npcs like a player's pet.
Now, the buffs this staff has recieved in it's ability to always hit when it casts and it's increased damage, but as mentioned, that does nothing if aoe destroys a fraction of your weapons damage.
Imagine this staff had 100 haste or 100 crit instead but it only worked during fights that didn't have aoe, or at least there was a chance you might not have that combat rating for the fight depending on which fight it was...
The val’kyrs spawned by the Nibelung staff will now always hit with their smite attack and their damage has been increased for both normal and heroic versions of the staff.
Is it enough to make it efficient ?
i made it procc 5 times on Onyxia..
So u can make a little army when u aoe a bit with blizzard as a mage!
the pets from the proc indeed fly, rather than hover over the ground. You can check it out by mount up a flying mount, these "angels" will take off and fly alongside you.
Hotfixed on Jan 6, 2010:
"The val’kyrs spawned by the Nibelung staff will now
with their smite attack and their
damage has been increased
for both normal and heroic versions of the staff."
I tested on the heroic dummy, and they now hit 100% of the time, and their damage has been increased 50%. My priest friend tells me they also fixed a bug where it wasn't proccing off of Mind Sear ticks, and I can confirm that she now procs significantly more (partly due to her decrease in complaining, and that she had 4-5 angels up at one point during Plagueworks trash.... jealous....)
I got this offspec on my shaman tonight (no staff users wanted it, and I'd rather have a fun cool item than see it sharded >_>).
I haven't been able to get it to proc off of Magma Totem or Fire Nova yet, but I've also only tested against target dummies (which definitely can proc the valkyrs off lightning bolts).
Assuming it can't proc off our AoE, it means unlike the casters the item was designed for, shaman have no way to get a good proc rate out of this staff, even in AoE situations.
So, to sum up, this staff sucks for Shaman, which I think everyone knew already.
But it's still damned fun :D
I just did a heroic run with this staff and the procrate seems to have been upped today. I had a val'kyr on most fights, or at least every 2 fights and more than once 2 at the same time. Before today I could do a heroic and have a single val'kyr spawn during the whole run. It doesn't show up in recount as far as I can tell, so I can't give any insight to the damage of the val'kyr. I like the change though, this may make it raid worthy for me.
proc off dots for sure.
PS2 Tested on my shadowpriest
PS Not sure why i get downranked for reporting my experience with the staff, but meh
There's also a rare chance to proc a Val'kyr when using a rocket pack on the Airship in ICC. I think this happens because when I take rocket damage it counts as "hit". :)
Vengeful Shade Vengeful Blast Val'kyr Guardian 12295 (O: 5895)
Not entirely sure about this, but doesn't seem to proc of Mind Sear? Can anyone confirm this please.
Not proc-ing of dot ticks and maybe Mind Sear makes it not such a great staff for Spriests.
-Edit- Does proc of the initial cast of Mind Sear I think, but not the AoE dmg.
-Edit- Did some more testing today, does proc off DoT ticks for a shadow priest.
Okay did a bit more testing today, did 5 runs of SM Cath with a pally tank using the attack the boss at the end to cause the whole instance to aggro. Had him drop a consecrate after running back to the entrance to generate threat, then mind seared all of the ads to death, had a total of
in the whole 5 runs on separate occasions. One on the 2nd and one on the 4th runs.
Maybe there is a mechanic in which the lvl of the mob affects proc rate?
I noticed today in my daily heroic that the armor color changed from silver/grayish to a golden yellow, same with the hair color. Odd but amusing.
As I've already written in the comments of the heroic version of this pretty staff, the second out of four operas forming the famous The Ring Of The Nibelung cycle by Richard Wagner is called The Valkyrie. Assuming that World of Warcraft's "Val'kyr" are the result of slight change of the "Valkyrie", the link between the name of the staff and the proc is pretty evident.
i saw someone say it proc off the dot from warlocks
my question is, it proc off the first hit of dot?
or full duration of dot? (corruption tick 4time mean 4 chance of proc)?
This staff, if u can compensate for the stat losses in other gear, rules. The valk's proc most fight and give a nice dps increase. I've read some of these other posts and wanted to clarify because some people seem confused about how great these icc weapons are that have procs like that and are lacking in passive stats. It is meant to work with gear that drops from ICC and not TOC the gear in TOC needs you to have a weapon with stats on it for you to be able to reach your hard/soft cap for various different stats while in ICC it is much easier to reach those caps with straight gear. I believe the people that should use this staff need to be geared. They can benefit from these valk's procs greatly. Other people with not so good gear should pass on this or put in their bank until they are able to use it. Saying a staff like this is crap is short-sighted. Please look at the bigger picture people and take into account gear that will be had. I use this on my boomkin and can pull 8-10k in single target and the valk's proc for roughly 5% of my damage. I am able to do this because I am geared up the as*. If you are just entering icc and get this staff be ready to gem accordingly to make up for the loss in stats.. but when you dont need stats anymore and are over your caps have fun using this badboy it tis the shizz
And, using the 1% proc rate, we can calculate the approximate dps of the proc.
(1 / 1.0) * 0.01 * 29.4k = 294 dps, when casting every 1.0 sec
(1 / 1.5) * 0.01 * 29.4k = 196 dps, when casting every 1.5 sec
(1 / 2.0) * 0.01 * 29.4k = 147 dps, when casting every 2.0 sec
I think you haven't thought much about the classes that leave dots on their targets, like shadow priests and warlocks (mainly affliction specced ones). for those classes the dps gain is much higher since they rely on their damage coming from many small ticks instead of a few huge booms that more mage-like classes bring. just my 2 cents... and it looks so lovely on my druid that I really really realy want it on my priest who is currently using the mace from ulduar (there are no casterweapons dropping for my guild)
I think they made a stealth buff for proc rate of this staff. I noticed that today it proc'd like double times than it was before.
Does this proc in arena, and if so, is it worth taking over a PvP staff?
Either way I want one for BGs.
Also, a Shadow Priest summoning angely chicks is AWESOME!
I suspect the name comes from the opera by Richard Wagner "Der Ring des Nibelungen" that includes the very well know "Flight of the Valkyrie" or "Die Walkure" . It is also the same opera that Bugs Bunny cartoon "What's Opera Doc" is based upon.
"I'm going to kill the wabbit!" - E. Fudd
I have this on my boomkin. It is quite a nice dps boost, as the Valkyrie seem to appear even off dots of Insect Swarm and Moonfire. I will test this to be sure, but from running heroics, I have seen up to 3 of them spawn in such a time that only the ticks could make sense. (eg. I was running away from some nastiness at the time)
the val'kyr can proc from the damage reflected by your pw:shield if you have those talents. i had 2 procs when i used the staff in a bg!
Blizzard just announced that this item will be buffed, the proc rate is being upped to 2% and the Val'kyr will heal themselves for 25% of damage done by their smite.
As of Februrary 6 2010, the Nibelung hotfix is in effect. Now the proc chance is 2% instead of 1%, and the val'kyr it summons heal themselves when they deal damage. My angels are healing themselves for approx. 4000 per smite cast, which usually goes out ever 1-1.5 seconds. This averages the heal to about 3,200 HPS considering lag. Pretty nice.
In the beginning, I only took it because I knew it was likely something I wouldn't be sharding in a few months - much to the ridicule of the rest of the raid casters. In the end, it was a fairly substantial loss of mostly haste, but, well.
It's pretty freakin' awesome.
With the 3.3.2 changes, I am beginning to enjoy this staff more and more. I know with a number as low as 2 percent per cast, it varies wildly depending on the fight, and who uses it, and a whack of other modifiers. As a Warlock, who often has about two or three DoTs on a target, plus a vaguely rapid fire nuke, on mostly stationary fights like Festergut, or General Vezax, I get around about six Val'kyrs per fight.
Since they added the healing effect, I notice they're somewhat better at keeping themselves alive, though they are still quite fragile. Don't expect them to survive any heavy raid AoE damage. I'm not sure Blizzard will change that, since in their words, they want them to seem like a summonable ally, and not just another DoT.
If you are serious about min/maxing yourself, I'm not certain if I would recommend this staff. The damage they inflict is significant. A rogue friend of mine who watches the damage metres like a hawk often responds to me in considerable amazement at how much damage they do. I don't have the data, nor the skills to sufficiently break it down, to make a case either way, though. However if you want a staff you'll keep around because it's one of "those" items, by all means, splurge, and try to get this item. It's very fun.
Wagner is spinning in his grave at all this "Valkyrie Profile" crap.
Got it on the 'lock today. I spent a lot of DKP on it even though it wasn't that much of an upgrade (or at least I thought so, I was wtf'd at how powerful the Val'kyr actually are), because of the coolness factor. Other than Wagner's beautiful opera (and it really is epically beautiful), it also brings back memories from my favorite PSX game. I need to find a macro that /yells one of these quotes when Val'kyr are summoned =S.
"Come to me, dark warriors! Battle awaits us!"
"Finishing Strike! Divine Assault - Nibelung Valesti!"
"Thy sin of blasphemy against souls is great...I will return you to the source of all!"
"TotC was merely a setback!"... ok, not that.
I actualy summoned 5 Val'Kyr :D
Today i was doing old low lvl quests for achievements and i was running around spamming corruption on mobs but my valkyr would 1-shot them before my dot ticked and i wasnt getting credit : \
I did not check the utility of this staff in single boss fight. I imagine its not such an upgrade if you have already a icc mainhand/offhand or other staff. But let me tell you this: go to onyxia and start aoe the whelps.
It's an army i tell you! i remember having 8 or 9 together (it's so hard to count them....)
Just lost it to a moonkin.. Was scared of wasting dkp on it, i didnt want to loose illumination HC.
Does it procc of DoT's? Since that is a big source of my damage. Or is it just spellcasts?
My shaman just got this the other day in a pug group.
My personal opinion on this weapon is pretty awesome ona shaman. When I blood lust i intend to get up to 2-4 valk in just that 1 blood lust time frame My dps would go from 6k to 8k+ in a matter of seconds because of the valk!
I'm not 100% sure but it seems to proc off from lightning overload's proc.
Can someone confirm that it procs off from lightning overload?
32% drop rate more like 1%.
Interested in gathering some info on this for my shaman...
What I know:
-does not proc off DoT
-procs off DoT casts
-procs off Lightning Overload
-does not proc off damage from searing/magma/fire ele totems (since their damage counts as "pet" damage)
What I'd like to know:
-does it proc off the initial spell cast, or when the spell actually lands? (due to flight time)
-does it proc off Chain Lightning
? (^ I guess if it can proc only off the initial cast, then it won't proc off the jumps)
-does it proc off Fire Nova? (FN shows up as my damage, not totem damage)
-can it proc off any totem casts? (since I can stack IotDS with Healing Stream totem, but I'm not sure if any totems count as "harmful spells")
Please post if you have any info. Thanks in advance.
Edit: fixed spelling
While this is not exactly a great weapon for any caster, I - as a shadow priest - got a lot of hate for rolling on it in a icc25 pug.
The warlocks, mages and moonkins did not seem to care that even though the proc does not occur from dot ticks I am still playing the one caster class getting the most out of a weapon BY FAR.
Especially the moonkins were crying like children. Ignorant and unknowing. They are not even getting 600DPS out of this weapon while for me it is a solid 1000DPS.
Subject to a few inconveniences (the Val'kyr might die, the Val'kyr might fly around if you're too close or too far, the Val'kyr may proc right before the boss dies, or you might get unlucky) a good starting point for the way to think about this proc is that it is a 2% chance for each spell to deliver an addition 25,000 damage. A little math and you see that this is the equivalent of +500 damage per attack. Not bad at all. Now how to translate that to spellpower for easy item comparison?
A little napkin math: For a mage chain-casting Arcane Blast (0.85 coefficient) and critting 67% of the time with Arcane Blast on a 187.5% crit modifier, this proc is the equivalent of
, with some discount necessary for the contingencies listed above. This proc becomes less good relative to spellpower as crit rate increases, but scales with haste the same as spellpower (since more haste means more chances to proc).
Also, this assumes that fights last long enough to make each proc worth it, unless right near the end of the fight. So I definitely would NOT wear this for daily heroics, where mobs die too fast. But for most boss nuking fights this is a very good raiding weapon.
How is this for an Arcane mage? Does anyone know if it procs off each tick of arcane missles? I just got it last night and only saw about 4-5 procs in about 2hrs. Also, my rawr says that 10man Abracadaver dps is much higher (probably because it's not factoring in the proc dps).
Scarlet Monastery is a great place to get all 10 to proc least for frost mage's.
Yeah so I lost a roll on this to a restoration druid. The druid has 2 specs, resto and resto. He basically went from a high crit and haste 550 spell power staff, to a flat 741 spell power staff. Not like the flying chick is gonna proc with lifebloom or something.
This is really usefull when you need to attack Kinetics bombs in Blood prince. :P
Only a joke.
This can proc of any harmful spell - even if it doesn't hit a target. I was spamming arcane blast to get my friends attention and a valkyr popped up. In the middle of dalaran. Not practical for adding to your DPS, but you can show off the val'kyr in town for some fun. :)
I got this Yesterday and it's awesome. I doubt it has a 35 second internal cooldown. Just from the raiding i have done today and yesterday and I have have 2 val'kyrs out at once multiple times. I even had 3 Val'kyrs out before. If they only last for 30 seconds but the proc has a 35 second cooldown this wouldn't be possible.
This is incorrect. Individual DoT ticks
proc this staff.
Direct Damage spells, and
Channeled AoE ticks.
If a spell has multiple effects, it may have multiple chances to proc this staff. Deep affliction Shadow Bolts, for example, apply direct damage as well as multiple debuffs. They have several chances to proc the staff.
Apropos of nothing, I just wanted to add that Holy Nova will proc Valkyrs quite frequently, even if it doesn't hit any enemies or mobs. I ran around in Ironforge one day spamming Holy Nova, and soon had a small herd of Valkyrs following me.
In 5 years of wow, this is by far the most entertaining "serious" raiding item I've ever had. Instead of a boring only "mathematically" relevant proc that occurs now and then and wears off with an internal cooldown, you get these awesome looking valkyrs that have health, a casting animation and can spawn in numerous amounts, making this possibly the only weapon in the history of wow with theoretically unlimited dps ;) Besides that, the stats are absolutely perfect for casters that are hastecapped and/or critcapped in ICC like moonkins (tons of spellpower, zero crit/haste/spirit=yay).
As an arcane mage I notice that my "valkies" (term my guildees refer to them as) have a decent proc rate for me. I have 3 other guildees ( arc mage, destro lock, and boomkin) that also have the staff. They aren't reliable on single target as some people have stated on here, but I have been able to proc all 8 multiple times on trash dps in 25 icc with a combo of flamestrike/blizz aoe damage. They are a nice little addition to the fight when my guildees also proc (nothing like 32 valkies all at once...screen is completely encompassed in white wings!) And minus the occasional aggro pull (yeah sorry about that guys >.<) they are fun just to have!
They should really increase the chance
to proc for the val'kyr to make it a worthy ICC 25m staff. Still love
this beauty though.
Ofcourse im referring to single target situations.
The official figures have been released by Blizz. This is a great staff depending on how often you cast. The low proc rate produces a very wide and left-skewed probability distribution for your DPS - you will usually do meh but sometimes you will do fantastic, and the average is pretty damn good.
Its a nice weapon of choice for elemental shaman, if getting 1h and shield due to classloot (depends on guild) is a pain (since most SP shields are healer primary after naxx, wtf!)
DPS wise - pretty much proc vs static stats
But i am loving it so far
This staff is annoying for when you're grinding low-level mobs, at least for me as a Shadowpriest. I Mind Flay all the mobs to death in order to save mana, and when a Valkyr is up they one-shot the mobs as soon as I start channeling on them, thereby killing them without me having dealt damage to them and denying me loot.
This staff is excellent for any caster (DPS). With the Valkyr proc, it helps fights a lot. The only disadvantage I see about this staff is the lack of Haste, Crit, or Hit. I'm not QQing about it, however, it'd be wise to have decent Haste, Crit and Hit stats if you're willing to get this staff.
Other than that, it's an amazing weapon every caster DPS should get.
Procs off the initial cast (NOT each wave) of most aoe channeled damage spells, even if there's no target. You could start casting hurricaine or rain of fire prior to an arena, over and over, till they proc, giving you a big edge if the enemy team rushes. Confirmed on live realms.
I have found that as a mage, when using Blizzard on many AoE targets, the Valkyrs proc more often than single target, leading to a great boost in AoE DPS. Even single target, these things are great boosts.
If you get this in ICC25 since no one else needed it, and plan to heal as resto druid with it since its ilvl264, there is better ilvl251(even including a ilvl232 offhand) options:
Mag'hari Chieftain's Staff
in a theory, would you get exp from a kill that's solely done by valkyrie?
i.e. I'm boosting a friend in a low level instance and valkyrie goes to kill something I haven't attacked. Test and report if you got the staff.
Does anyone know how to make MSBT addon to track the proc of Val`kyr and show its damage?
The magic 'reference' on this staff, i believe, is nothing to do with any japanese video game, and I do know the one they mean (I dont like it). It is actually probably to do with the ring cycle, which for those of you who dont know was the set op opera's that gave opera it's stereotype (also not fond of them either) seeing as the opera's featured both valkyrie and a dwarf named nibelung who was (for a very short time) master of the universe.
what is better for mage
Cajado do Chefe Mag'hari
I just got five to proc at once with
Uploading SS now.
Does this proc off certain hunter spells?
this is pretty good for priests (even disc!) in pvp. after testing it self i found out that it can spawn from the disc talent Reflective Shields, so if you are fighting someone with many fast hits, your chances of spawning one of those sexy angles is very high.
Do the Valkyrs benefit from the ICC buff "Strength of Wrynn"/"Hellscream's Warsong"?
Dang, page four... Guess I'll share this anyway.
After some testing on a boss target dummy, when a Valkyr procs and provide it or the boss doesn't die, it will do 18k-21k of damage on average in the 30 secs it's up, giving it dps somewhere in the 600s.
So when considering what weapon you want to use, even though the Nibelung doesn't have crit or haste it will almost always the the better choice, heres why.
*The average dps quoted here was calculated by Dr. Damage*
"( )" are for gems and enchants
Arcane Missiles used in place of Arcane Blast to avoid the buff and more reliable dps.
On my mage, I have several sets of weapons. If you have better weapons this might not apply to you but will still be helpful.
(+63 SP) and
, puts my Arcane Missiles at 2843.6 dps.
(+116 SP & +10 Spirit) gives my Arcane Missiles 2805.5 dps.
Then last the
(+116 SP & +10 Spirit) gives me 2757.5 dps w/o Valkyrs of course.
Now as stated above, Valkyrs do about 600 dps each for 30 secs.
The amount of dps each one will add to your dps depends on how long the fight last.
Lets say a boss takes 5 minutes to down, this can be Festergut, Professor or whatever. Each Vakyr that spawns and stays for its time will do about 20k damage.
20000 damage/300 secs= 66.666 dps for the 5 min fight, meaning each Valkyr that spawns will add about 66 dps to your weapon.
So going back to my weapons. 2843.6 - 2757.5 = 86.1 meaning for that 5 minute fight only 2 Valkyrs need to proc for it to be better than my other choices.
Just to top things off I went to the boss target dummy and had a 5 min fight.
I did 5.5k dps by myself and 3 Valkyrs proced during the fight. They did a total of 64550 damage.
64550 damage / 300 secs = 215.166 dps / 3 Valhyrs = 71.722 dps each
Nibelung definitely the best choice =).
Edit: Even though the spawn rate is decent on this staff, if your doing a boss with a very high damage aura or one that spawns aoe zones often, the Nibelung would suffer dps loss from that, so theres something to keep in mind when picking your weapon.
Alright, Warlock here and I'm trying to get a good estimate on this staff. I currently have two choices of set up to go with and would like to know what would be better.
Shard of the Crystal Heart
Purified Lunar Dust
Both seem to keep my dps at a good level but I'd like some input from anyone who might have toyed with both staves to see which might be the better fit.
"Harmful spells" is a bit of a misnomer. It procced off
for me. It probably means offensive spells, not just spells that do damage.
Just for !@#$s, any mages out there should try and spec frost for a few of the trash pulls in ICC with absurd numbers of mobs if you have this staff.
20 val'kyr from my own staff on the Sindragosa whelps. The best I've seen was 27, but I was lagging so hard I couldn't get a decent screenshot.
Shameless plug for the mod.
as an arcane mage, i think this weapon is horrible. last night it only procd 2 times for 10 gunship and 10 saurfang. thats pretty bad. im told this is best for lcoks, not sure which spec. it should be noted tat these things can be a little awkward sometimes and pull extra mobs. i was running up the stairs in h uk, past the mobs kind of under the stairs that everyone alwasy skipps. these things didnt follow as closely as my water elemtnal or hunter pet, made a really wide turn, and eneded up not coming up the stairs but pulling mobs instead LOLIMBAD
Valk looks nice and all and the 3-4% SP is handy but the drop in stats Vs Lower Level Frost needle
& Scourgelord's Baton
doesnt appear to be an improvement
For the amount of people who want this weapon, I say this;
A lot of people talk trash about this weapon.. but finding a quality offhand to supplement frozen bonespike isn't easy. And I LOVE this thing for non arena pvp.
Tonight in arathi in 4.0.1 I loaded up my stats.
965900 dmg caused (fire mage)
Of that, 114,438 dmg from valks. This translates to 11.8% of dmg! Keep in mind that hey guess what, they keep attacking when you are CCed.. or you are running away, or you are ice blocked.
As of 4.0.1 they hit for an average of 1277 and the and crit rate was 2.8%. This value was resil modified of course.
Really good for pvp no matter what anyone says, so long as you have a lot of dots or multi targets. I've seen 5 up when im spamming flame strike with 3+ targets (initial hit + dot + ignite dot + procs off my molten armor).
So, I was questing against low level mobs today (~55) and the Val'kyr proced, attacked a mob and failed to kill it in one. Normally it kills these mobs in one hit before I get a chance to damage them so, I think either this staff has been nerfed or, they have made the Val'kyr's damage scale with target level (which would be cool). Anyone know anything about it?
Hey rannasha I reallylove your addon but i would like to further it more to Nirual & the quotes of Alduruna
function VB_OnEvent(this, event, ...)
local timestamp, type, sourceGUID, sourceName, sourceFlags, destGUID, destName, destFlags = select(1, ...)
if (type=="SPELL_SUMMON" and sourceName==.."UnitName("player")".. and destName=="Val'kyr Guardian") then
"You face not .."UnitName("player")".. alone, but the Val'kyr I command!"
"Come to me, dark warriors! Battle awaits us!","Finishing Strike! Divine Assault - Nibelung Valesti!"
"Thy sin of blasphemy against souls is great...I will return you to the source of all!"
, "YELL", nil, nil)
local frame = CreateFrame("Frame", "VBFrame");
There you go kind of a revised version of the original
not gonna spoil anything but try getting zombiefest with this staff on and be the dps : )
anyone spamming instants like ice lance or fel flame with 50% haste (1sec GCD) could have up to 30 of them out at a time, but the chances for this to happen are probably lower than being struck by a lightning inside your house while receiving a call that you won the lotto jackpot.
Got it out of my bank today to do the FL dailies, I have every quest open, i did all of them with it and only got the valk proc one time. Anyone know if blizz nerfed it or was i just unlucky today? i've had as many as 5 or 6 out at once b4.
Will the proc still work if i tmog my current staff to this 1?
I want to confirm they drastically reduce the chance to summon Val'kyrs at higher levels.
I'm a 90 Mage, and after a good 3-4 minutes of spamming Nether Tempest, Pyroblast, and spreading Combustion (and Ignite/Pyroblast DoTs), I got ONE procc. ONE!
I was just curious if they made the Val'kyrs stronger at higher levels. She wasn't even hitting for 2k, so no, she doesn't.
Wowhead says it only drops on 25 man normal mode, but I can confirm it drops on Heroic as well. Just dropped for me tonight.
The name of this item is a reference to Norse/German Mythology
(wherein Nibelung is what the wealth of the Burgundians is called)
, and potentialy also towards
's opera work with name based on the former mentioned.
