This is only better than Dense on *very* slow weapons (3.5+), offhands, or extremely high-level weapons.

On a 2.8 speed weapon, Dense Sharpening Stone is worth almost 40 AP, with 1.9 speed it's 58 AP, but with a 3.5 speed weapon you only gain the equivalent of 32 AP.

(extra_damage/weapon_speed)*14 = attack_power

I recommend you use the mod "TheoryCraft" to find out how much attack power 1% crit is worth with your current gear before choosing which stone to use. As a general rule for dual wielding however, Dense on main-hand and Elemental on off-hand will give the best results.

Still the best sharpening stone to use on large, slow weapons, especially 2-handed ones. The jury is out on whether they are better than
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23529 or http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28421
for faster weapons, particularly daggers on a rogue, I'd expect the latter stones to edge this out, at least in a PVE environment.

Note that this works on maces too, so no need to keep 2 types of sharpening stone around if you switch around a lot.

Nice that there's something still useful from Molten Core, particularly as it's about the only thing I ever got from there as I started my raiding career quite late in the game.

This is still the best temporary enchant for any druid using a 2h mace (namely, those that use Earthwarden to DPS, and those that use the Gladiator's Mauls).

Does anyone know if these can be applied to WotLK weapons? It sounds like some sharpening stones work and others do not. Anyone tried these yet?

At the release of Lich King, temporary weapon enhancements (oils & stones) worked on items all the way to those requiring level 80 (I applied it to Totemic Purification Rod with no problems), this was changed by Blizzard within weeks of release. After much experimenting I found that (at version 3.0.9) the current cut off for using these is any weapon with item value of 162 (as rated in the Armory). Any weapon at or above 166 will alert the user that the attempt failed but will not consume the object. I was able to apply oil to a Levitating Dagger (BOE green) which requires level 75 to use.

In my opinion, you should always use items like these. Weapon oil, sharpening stones etc. They are extremely easy to make, and reasonably cheap on the auction house, and they give such an extreme boost.
