The Sumali Pirate Situation

Being turned over to their home government is NOT a vacation at Club Fed. You're too America-centric, MyTie. This is the Third World we're talking about. They can barely afford to put all those luxuries in their government offices, so why would they bother putting them in their prisons?
Why is this directed at me? When did I say anything about Sumali prisons?
70% of those polled in Somalia support piracy
. I somehow doubt they would get anything but a big welcome home banner and refreshments. Also you talk as if you know about thier government. I'd like to see you explain it to me, since it barely exists.

I pains me to see the flow of thinking on this thread and it just solidifies my thoughts on the way Americans think..."ah, let's just kill them".
It's not as simple as that. For one, the piracy has been occuring for some time now in the same waters. It just so happens that this was the first American ship they captured. So now everyone has this attitude like "don't mess with us otherwise we'll kick your a@@"
Just because Somalia is poor doesn't make them stupid...other wise they wouldn't know how to do pirating. There's some factors that everyone needs to consider:
1. They capture ships in order to try to obtain some type of monetary funds, either from ransom or goods on the ship.
2. This area is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world...there is no way any country is going to be able to protect ever ship out there from pirates, let alone be able to provide navy ships to monitor the area.
3. The Somalians are using light, speed boats which are extremly quick compared to the mega-ton ships in the lanes and threating to sink the ship with RPGs if not let on board.
4. These ships hold millions of dollars worth of merchandise. If I was the owner of the shipping company I'd be thinking do I want to pay this guy 1M or take the chance of losing 10M in merchandise and a multi-million dollar ship.
If the pirating keeps up, the only feasible way I see it is that shipping companies are going to have to hire armed mercanaries to protect their ship fleets, which they will in turn pass that cost onto the customer...thus raising merchandise cost to the consumer. I don't see how any nation will be able to fully protect those lanes and will deal with each situation on a case-by-case basis.
It's not as simple to say kill them all...the old cowboy "Bushism" thinking is over...these guys are dirt poor and they have no other way of getting money easily. So if you kill a few I don't think this will stop them one bit.
Just my 2 cents. Oh, and just in case anyone gets the wrong idea...I'm American too and proud of it. I just think we need to wake up to reality and really see what's going on in the world. It's not all about us.

The US has done worse things to better the nation before. The pirates are doing the same @#$%, they're pirating so they can live a better life and bring wealth to their country. Not that pirating is right, but acting like the US is some beacon of morality is bull$%^&.
Also, ships through that area should have armed guards.
They do have guards, the "crew that is trained to deal with these situations" is a fancy way of saying that they have professional killers on board.

They are
not
pirates. Just because they're at sea and steal things doesn't automatically make them pirates.
I agree, we don't really have a better word for them, but they're still not pirates.

3 beautiful headshotsThe only way it could have been better was to get live footage of it broadcast all around the globe, shortly followed by video of the former hostage eating pie and chips laughing at the corpses of the pirates.
