Unless you don't plan to do a PvE content with your paladin at all, or have a substantial gold backup to fill your equipment holes at 85: don't.
Questing and raiding provide you PvE gear, BG's only give you honor.
It's a nice stress relief (or adrenaline pump, depends on your style), but I wouldn't recommend battlegrounds to close your leveling experience.
But if you just want to visit them once in a while - do so. May be get a level of two
But I strongly recomment you to reach into Twilight Highlands as they open, if you plan to get into raiding instances as you hit 85.

I can't really recommend on talent choices. My general opinion on this matter: Do as you see it fits.
If you're interested in my own experience (highly subjective and biased, I warn you): I have six characters that I'm (intend to and/or) leveled to 85.
Between them: Shadow Priest (85), Protection Paladin (85), Blood/Frost DK (82 bound to friend's availability, as we're leveling together through dungeons), Resto/Ench Shaman (83+), Bear/Kitty Druid (63), and just for the sake of Archeology: Dwarf Rogue (83).
As you can see, most of them are tanks, I have no issues with them.
I can succesfully DPS on kitty (at least, for what it matters in early Outland), but I have hard time pulling the plank on Rogue. I just don't understand them, don't have "feeling". Barely pulling enough DPS to cope with the rest of the group in dungeon, but that's about it.
Shadow Priest is my main, and much loved class. I basically know without a thought, which spell to cast in each moment. If I have choice between Priest and Paladin, it'd be Paladin only if I don't feel myself right (sleepy/having headache or whatever). Paladin is more forgiving, but Priest i about as resilient in PvE, given enough attention. I've tried rolling my Priest Holy right before Shattering... I made it through a number of heroics, including event minibosses, but by my own standards it was a failure. Same as Rogue - I don't "feel" the spec.
On a contrary, my Resto Shammy is excelent healer, many times getting "damn, good work there" awards. But DPS on her is... remains to be worked about. Especially on trash, where lack of AoE effects comes into play.

Hey Micun!
I PvP as Prot, and flippin' love it - I'm learning more every day from here and elsewhere, and a friend has recently sent me this guide:

It's very handy indeed!
Good luck!

Hi again,
I PvP as 0/31/10, this spec:

You get Pursuit of Justice, which is a real positive, getting close to people is a struggle!
For before 85, get the 31 in the prot tree, and build up to the rest - you have dual spec, right? Get a prot pve one for levelling and a prot pvp one going. Or ret for levelling if you can handle being a bit more squishy!
