About the Author
This guide was written by Llarold! I’ve been tanking since Vanilla. During Mists of Pandaria, I saw an opportunity to begin writing guides, and I took it with the hopes of making myself a better tank and making the community into better tanks with me. I hope it’s working!
I am active in all of the tank class Discords but primarily contribute to theorycrafting discussions in
Peak of Serenity
(Monk and Warrior). I’m active on
, where I mostly talk WoW (and basketball), and I’m half of the team responsible for the YouTube channel
WoW at Night
, which focuses primarily on tank guides and previews.
Macros are simple, in-game tools which allow you to sequence spells together, create custom names and icons, cast different abilities depending on whether the target is friendly or hostile, define targeting conditions, and much, much more. While the amount of options can be complex, making them is easy, so in this section we'll go over how to set them up yourself.
To open the in-game Macro interface, type "/macro" or "/m".
Choose between the General and Character-specific macro tabs. Then click the "New" button on the macro window.
Choose a Name and an Icon so you can easily recognize your macro, then click "Okay."
Select your new macro and use the text editor below to tell it what to do. If copying ours below, you can simply copy/paste the text in.
Click the "Save" button, and drag your macro icon onto your bars, which will allow it to be used just like any other spell from your spellbook.
To close the window, click "Exit", or just press Escape.

Mark Target with Skull
One of the most basic, but important things a tank can do is focus their party’s damage on a specific target. Using a skull to designate a kill target is usually worth the effort when dealing with dangerous mobs or disorganized strangers.
Mark Target with X
Useful for designating a secondary DPS target, or a CC target.
Place Blue World Marker
Useful for showing party members something important, or guiding them in the right direction.
Focus macros are very important for lots of advanced tanking situations. Making use of @focus macros can greatly reduce the difficulty of taunt swapping and interrupting enemies.
Without holding a mod key (alt, shift, or ctrl), this Taunts your target. If holding a mod key, this taunts your focus.
/cast Taunt; Taunt
Without holding alt mod (you can use shift or ctrl in its place, or designate no specific mod key to use all three), this interrupts your target. If holding alt, this interrupts your focus.
/cast Pummel; Pummel
A macro worth its own keybind, usually for casting
on a focused ally, such as a co-tank. It can be used on a focused enemy, for getting in range to interrupt, as an example.
where your cursor is pointed, without having to click the ground to finish the cast.
/cast Heroic Leap
The BFA GCD changes have greatly affected Prot Warrior’s ability to macro together a bunch of cooldowns, pop them all at once, and blow enemies to smithereens. Nonetheless, an offensive cooldown castsequence macro can be somewhat useful. This macro casts
and uses your first trinket, then casts
when pressed again. This is only useful when running
, naturally. The castsequence macro resets after 5 seconds of not being pressed.
/castsequence reset=5 Avatar, Demoralizing Shout
Activate On-use Trinket
This is for the first trinket slot. The second trinket slot is 14.
Make a Macro Swap with Talent Changes
