There are 3 snakes sold by Xan'tish (black kingsnake, brown snake and crimson snake). He wanders around the northern end of the valley of spirits in orgrimmar.

This pet is available via the battle pet trainer (currently any battle pet trainer can be used, but previously each pet was only available to the specific battle pet trainer for your race) depending on your race. Once learned, it will be available to all characters on your account, the races/pets acquired are as follows:

Pandaren have access to a Jade Crane Chick regardless of faction chosen, this pet is currently not available through any other means. Most of the other pets listed are available via vendors, i've marked the ones that are not.

Horde:

Undead - Undercity Cockroach
Tauren - Brown Prairie Dog
Blood Elf - Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling
Goblin - Shore Crawler (only on pet trainer)
Orc - Black Kingsnake
Troll - Black Kingsnake (same as orc)

Xan'tish the troll didn't sell them to me, but Matty the Goblin would teach it to me. You find him a little to the south at the Goblin-SPA.... errr, Slums.

This pet is no longer available from Xan'tish since the Kor'Kron took all his snakes away. Ansel Fincap in Brill, does have it.
